Betrayed, shattered, and transformed. Sick of everyone’s crap, can this snarky lone wolf find belonging, respect, and love?
Lark Emerson vaguely remembers being happy. After catching her husband and her sister in the sack, the IT professional walks away from twenty-seven years of marriage and takes a job on the border of a shifter community. But after a rogue pack storms her office and attacks, to her horror she’s captured and savaged.
Wounded and ill, the forty-something limps home and is shocked when her injuries rapidly heal, her eyesight sharpens, and noise hurts her ears. And taken to a facility to ease the transition from human to supernatural, she’s completely thrown when her comfortable middle-aged body alters to something unfamiliar and exquisite.
Struggling with a temper as hot as her new figure, can Lark learn to trust when the handsome packmaster comes calling?

In this edition of Bitten Shifer, Poppy Royana brings the story to life, while the bonus chapters are performed by Peter Wicks.
Brogan lives in Ireland with her husband and their eleven furry children: five furry minions of darkness (aka the cats), four hellhounds (the dogs), and two traditional unicorns (fat, hairy Irish cobs).
In 2019 she embraced her craziness by writing about the imaginary people that live in her head. Her first love is her husband followed by her number-one favourite furry child Bob the cob, then reading. When not reading or writing, she can be found knee-deep in horse poo and fur while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.
Bitten Shifter by Brogan Thomas is far from a bad book by any means, but it's also not a great book. I found a lot of this book to be very underwhelming. I didn't know before I read this that this would be a fated mates trope book, and I have to be honest, as a 35 year old woman, that trope comes off as childish. It's love without the most important factors, such as finding someone whose values align with yours, someone you have sexual and intellectual chemistry with, and someone you slowly get to know over time, someone you build a real bond with that's rooted in deep love, passion, understanding, and compassion. To me, it's just not interesting; I find it to be kind of unimaginative.
Lark is a 47 year old divorcee who is attacked while working for shifters and finds herself permanently transfigured. I was hoping with a character who is older than typical that she would have a breadth of character, history, and emotions. She is introduced to a wide cast of characters who are somewhat likable but never quite feel authentic or real. They are just supporting characters that can't stand on their own.
I found the basic plot interesting but it lacked any sort of depth and nuance. I was hoping for an in-depth character analysis of a 47 year old who goes from sad middle-aged woman to a hot, much younger woman with shapeshifter abilities as well as new strengths as she learns to adjust to her new body and circumstances. If you were looking for the same, you will not find that here. If you're looking for a vivid and compelling werewolf novel with a female main character I suggest Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. It also has a fated mates sort of trope but the relationship dynamics are a much more interesting. Aside from the boring romance and the lack of effusive characters or interesting world building, I also found the final battle to be completely rushed and underwhelming.
The best I can say is that it's entertaining and a real page turner, I'll admit I was compelled to read more most of the time but I ultimately found it lacking everywhere that counts. The best part of this book is the cover which is never what a writer wants to hear.
I wanted to read a book about a grown up woman that deals with the unexpected.
Instead this 47 year old promptly gets changed to 20-something who is super beautiful, strong, magical and otherwise better than anyone plus has superpowers.
I enjoyed reading this book. I got to the end, eagerly clicked on the next book, and rapidly realized that this book just came out... yesterday. Lol. The next book, Bitten Vampire; comes out in August. Good news, this is a complete book, meaning NO cliffhanger! Like most of Brogans other series, every book is from the same world following different MCs. This is: Fated Mates, found family, Midlife MC who can kick gluteus maximus... then usually ends up needing medical attention later.
Story started off fairly well. Lark catches her husband cheating on her with her sister, doesn’t confront them, just gets the evidence, lets them know she was in the house, leaving clue to that for them to find, then leaves. Lark applies for a job in the sector run by shifters, gets it and off she goes, leaving the POS’s to wonder where she’s disappeared to, at least for a time. What’s confusing is how Lark describes her husband as a person, why would they have lasted 27 years? Forward to her filing for divorce and finalizing it, POS husband wants to meet with Lark in person. He’s have to be granted special permission to come to where Lark is. Why would her sister get clearance to come in there, she had no reason, no business reason and previously established written rules Lark speaks of would have not allowed her to come there. You can’t have that they are extremely strict who they let in and then have Lark’s POS sister being there with Lark’s soon to be POS ex-husband. Huge plot fail. And why would Lark be going into the room by herself, without the solicitor being already there or going in with her. And all the late arriving solicitor said was not in keeping with confidentiality in how he greeted Lark, asking about what happened to her, which was not known to her ex. Doesn’t matter that they soon to be ex-husband didn’t recognize Lark. In the scheme of things, a minor issue, but still. Did enjoy what followed though. Both POS’s getting called out, then their lies shoved in their face, then the reveal to the POS’s, before the big reveal. I knew who Merrick was near the moment he appeared on scene in the beginning of the book, was confirmed when he later shows up again protecting Lark. And why do others know about her? When Merrick revealed himself, information provided suggests that there should not have been anyone not trusted knowing about her. But this was not explained. Merrick would have known why there was an invasion of the Ministries building where Lark worked. Why would they have not questioned those that survived, particularly the secretary, who Lark saved. It didn’t make sense that Ryker knew nothing of it. Attack at the Ministry, vampire tried to get to her and the very next morning Merrick takes off with Lark with no guards? None? And how are all these factions getting into a previously written uber strict area? Huge plot fail issues abound. How would they get in the super strict sector, as well as being able to leave it, when it has super strict security, even for leaving? And all they get away with and no shifter catches up to them? Really? At this point there’s poor writing, poor execution in events compounded by there being consecutive days of there being trouble, in particular to vampire getting places he should not be able to, doesn’t matter he’s an old one, is contradictory to previously established storyline. And it’s absolutely ridiculous that Merrick would just agree to leave her without him. He is her mate, why would he do that? And why would she agree to it? Just because she’s there for training? No. “Oh, it’ll be just two days, she’ll be safe here.” More ridiculousness. He’s there, steps out to meet with someone and things happen, cliché, but okay. Altogether leaving? Doesn’t make sense. And there’s a huge lack of relationship building between Lark and Merrick. Lark removing her protective necklace why? She’s far too old for such stupidity. And she has been under constant threat, so why would her accommodations be on the ground floor? Why would she not think about this for herself? Eyes were rolling at this point. It’s just pure ridiculousness. She should have had to be convinced that it was OK for her to be on the ground floor. The vampire having the little bit of blood that he got from her, which wasn’t even directly from her, so properties were being killed since it was on the ground, give him the ability that he expressed to her? Again, no. It’s too much. If it was written that he had actually bitten her before the magic house separated him from her, I feel that would have been more believable. Being upset that you were used as bait, I get it. Intelligence kicking in that you could not be told or else the vampire would know and not all of this drama about heart shattering foolishness? Priceless. Too bad it wasn’t used. No, we had to be bothered with her foolish, thinking about how she was used and tired of being treated like a pawn and how she could see why he did it, why all unfolded this way, but understand he doesn’t mean I forgive him. Ranting over being kept in the dark, when you bent hold, let the vampire know what’s going on and then not being able to be caught. Stupid? Or just stupid? She’s. Too. Old. For. That. Foolishness! Her history with her ex-husband is no excuse. He cheated on her, he was not trying to keep her safe. No, we have to have the cliché, I’m too stupid to use my intelligence and apply it to this unique situation, instead be all in my dramatic feelings, as if the roles were not reversed, she would’ve done the same damn thing. In fact, she kind of did, when she broke her necklace over Merrick, instead of herself. Why can’t we for once have a woman who cusses him out right there on the spot for how close things came, acknowledge see why you did it, since it absolutely makes sense, tell him, I can’t talk to you right now, take a night, then move on. A lot kept happening back to back, so I get her exploding on him, but come on! Instead we have a 47 year-old woman who is acting like a petulant teenager and “broke up” with her Fated Mate in all her glorious hypocrisy! We have to put up with this shite for two weeks times span before she acts like the far grown woman she’s supposed to be. Extremely disappointing. AND WOLVES DO NOT PURR!!!! Big cats don’t even purr!! So, NO, wolf shifters cannot purr! She’s darn right he did not fail her, she failed him. This definitely could’ve been more successful had it been executed well. The premise of the story was fantastic. Wish justice was done to it.
After one quick glance at the description, it had me. Come on, an old MFC who finds her husband cheating and decides to make a drastic change to life only to be bitten by a shifter— you know it has to be good. And it wasn't just good. Bitten Shifter was freaking awesome.
At first glance, Lark is a very kind soul who is loyal and caring. She's low-key, a girl who loves cuddling up with a good book. My kind of girl. But there are so many unexpected layers to Lark, and each new surprise just made me like her more. The story is told from Lark's perspective, but there are some fantastic other characters. This is a clean romance, and while I didn't get as much Merrick as I would have liked, I did like the passion and care he showed, minus a couple of missteps. Riker was a surprise. I enjoyed his comic relief and show of friendship. Even the ex-husband and side piece were the perfect villains to hate.
The plot was so enjoyable. I know it sounds horrible, but watching Lark's life implode was darn entertaining, but it's because I knew that better things were coming. One life-altering event after another kept happening to Lark. All of them are the consequences of the previous life-altering event. I could pinpoint every single one of those events. It was fascinating and full of drama but only made Lark's life better, even if she couldn't see it at the time. Lark didn't change because she became a shifter, she changed because she was freed from the small boxes she let others put her in.
Bitten Shifter is my first introduction to Brogan Thomas, and I'm surprised by how much I loved it. I instantly connected with the characters, and the plot was entertaining while being easy to read. It was spectacular. I most definitely will be continuing this series. While I wait for the next one, I'll be checking out Brogan's previous releases.
I can't handle another shitty book right now. I've suffered enough. This is boring. I had thought that with a 47 year old protagonist, this would at least be funny. Nope. Not funny. In fact, the 47 year old reverts back to a teenager once bitten. She even goes to school and deals with teenage bullies. No, thank you. The romance, what even was that? He just changes her name and declares her his mate during the confrontation with her cheating ex husband that he orchestrated. Anyway, I'm not finishing this nonsense.
A romance book without romance…lots of plot holes expected a book about a midlife aged FMC, but she magically becomes a 20 something, and loses and wisdom that she had gained from her 47 years along with it..the personality that was displayed at beginning of book, makes it hard to believe that she was with the cheater for 25 years…also sounds like she was the breadwinner.
Merrick is cool, but I liked Ryker more somehow😅 I liked how Lark was strong after everything and finaly got some happiness. I usualy read books with spice, this one has no spice but it was a good read. There's shifters, vampires, magic so if you like that you would like this book.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Wow!! What an amazing new world and first FMC that the author has created here. We start with Lark catching her husband cheating on her with her sister. Instead of letting loose the violence she feels raging inside, she chooses to vanish and take a job in the shifter sector. Lark is a mess, and it's glorious because at 47, her life is about to take a hard shift (pun intended) and who wouldn't be a mess. One late night work session turns her world inside out when she is bitten by a Werewolf. But this is only the start of the weirdness that Lark finds herself in. I loved Lark so much! She is human and flawed and still chooses to be fearless and act when she knows it's the right thing to do. She tries to stay positive and keep one foot in front of the other with each blow, and it is admirable! Brogan has a way of emotionally catching me with each book she writes, and this book is no exception. But she also has a way of writing amazing characters that, even in their flaws, there is growth and so much light and love there too. I can not express how much I love Lark and will be rereading often as there is so much wisdom and strength in these pages, too.
"Fate has not just come knocking—it’s kicked the door off its hinges. You can’t run from your problems. I know that."
Brogan Thomas’s Bitten Shifter delivers a thrilling and empowering take on the werewolf transformation trope, blending betrayal, resilience, and self-discovery into an action-packed urban fantasy.
Lark Emerson, a middle-aged IT professional, has had her life shattered—her husband’s affair with her sister leaves her disillusioned and ready for a fresh start. But her new job near a shifter community turns into something far more dangerous when a rogue pack attacks her, leading to a shocking transformation. Suddenly, she’s not just starting over—she’s becoming something entirely new. As she navigates the trials of her supernatural rebirth, Lark must learn to trust again, especially when a mysterious and handsome packmaster enters her life.
If you enjoy urban fantasy with a fierce yet vulnerable protagonist, a touch of romance, and plenty of high-stakes action, Bitten Shifter is a must-read. Lark’s journey from betrayal to power is one you won’t want to miss.
This is my first book by Brogan Thomas (and her first in the Bitten Chronicles) and I loved it! This is just the sort of escapist adventure I'm looking for these days. Lark is a bit older than many other MCs in UF, and I appreciated not only her age (mid-40s) but how she processed a series of life-changing events: a cheating husband, a new job in a strange place, getting bitten (as the title suggests) and transitioning to a supernatural creature. There's plenty of action too. Action that doesn't drag on too long. The pacing is excellent, as is the writing. Thomas knows how to deliver a slow-burn romance without rug burns. Highly recommend Bitten Shifter, and I'm looking forward to Bitten Vampire.
New to me author. Great world building and strong characters that actually talk to each other held my interest all the way through. I actually rather liked this one despite the lack of heat (read zero - the first in a shifter book that I've read).
I just wish the author used contractions more frequently to make for an easier read.
The book is okay but there is no progression for the plot or the main character. The book just ends without any character development or tying of loose ends which the author tries to do with “bonus” chapters at the end but still leaves a lot to be desired.
Just as my rating says, this story was an OK read. Somewhat glosses over some things, tells more than shows, but there was something about the heroine that appealed to me and made it more likeable. She seemed relatable enough and I would have liked to read even more of her development and growth as a nrw shifter. The hero of the story, though? I did not really get a feel for him because of all the telling, not showing.
Firstly, as a british reader, I absolutely love all the British words and phrases used in this book. I giggled at words such as "ninny" and "dumbarse". Now about the story itself; I adore Lark so much. She has the strength to leave her cheating husband and stands her ground against anyone who treats her like shit. Merrick is totally a "touch her and die" mate and i love it. Riker is amusing throughout this book and I'd happily read a story about him.
So, I was getting whiplash with the fmc. She wants to blend in, she is confused all while she has amazing powers, okay fine. She was just cheated on, the alpha prime manipulated her, puts her in traumatic situations, the worst is where he brought her ex in when she just went through extreme change. Then he gives her new idea saying she’s married to him! Wtf??? And she goes along with it? So, she’s a total doormat then. But even though she states how unlikable he is to Blondie (also a total complete a**hole and should have been put in his place) she lets him move her in and tells him he needs to date her😳. Seriously, had to dnf cause I can’t stand the fmc to be an easily manipulated slave. Honestly I was really excited to read this and the magic house was awesome. Just can’t continue when I keep yelling at the fmc to stand up for herself. Dump a-hole alpha (or at least make him beg and give her back her maiden name- mate bond doesn’t mean slave) pick another bodyguard that isn’t a smug dick and learn about her powers. I kept rewriting the fmc in my head as cool and with a backbone which after what she went through she should have. So great story idea, pathetic fmc.
Ok so I stayed up til 3 am finishing this book and I have zero regrets. BUT it has some issues. I have some qualms with the romance- MMC let’s FMC dangle for months without starting a romance. Then suddenly circumstances change and she’s hot and possibly powerful and NOW he’s interested in a relationship. It honestly left a bad taste.
The pattern continues with literally everyone in the book treating this poor woman as an expendable pawn. And the only reason she survives the frankly overkill amount of threats on her life is due to her own awesomeness.
Also, she’s in her forties and behaving like a virgin on prom night. Not even a fade to black romantic scene, really?
But there’s a lot to love here. The writing is great, the world building intriguing, the emotions realistic. I can’t wait to read the second book.
I'm so conflicted about this read. I enjoyed it for the simple fact there was a lot of action, And I appreciate a lot of action constantly occurring in a book. I however didn't care for this relationship. It was somewhat forced because they were fated. I just didn't feel them? And I didn't care for how our alpha didn't say anything until our Mc was bit and changed. It really left a sad undertone to their love. We really don't get much of a love story from these two. And I wish we could have seen more progression between these guys. The random vampire was also weird. I understood the humans, but not the random crazy vamp who was just casually around? We seemed to gloss over all the fractions. Which I have so many questions about. And I wish dove would have suffered.
Lark has come home early from an assignment and finds her drive full with her husband's car along with her sister's car. She parks then goes in. Something doesn't feel right. Her body is telling her leave. But she goes in and heads to the bedroom only to find her husband and sister going at it. Twenty seven years of marriage gone. She took footage with her cell phone. Then she knows she has to leave or she will turn to violence. She will ghost her husband. He will hate that. After taking half of what's in their joint account, saving the videos in their security system and blocking personal numebers she leaves and heads towards the shifters. The Sector Border! She's made it. A few days ago she had received an offer from the Shifter Ministry about implementing a new defence system. She didn't mention it to her husband cause he doesn't like shifters. Both he and her sister are members of Human First, an anti supernatural group. So she sends an acceptance email and waits. She gets the email telling her they are sending a courrier to the hotel she's at. The courrier is handsome maybe too handsome and she finds out after signing the paperwork that she discovers he's not a true courrier. As they prepare to leave two female mages start a spell fight. One mage is stealing another mage's mate. Well she can't stay here now. So Mr First Class, as she dubs him, tells her to get her stuff from her room and he;ll handle every thing else. She is a technomancer. That is her magic she inherited from her dad's side of the family. When she was 15 she was checked for derivative genome and sterilization. She's never told anyone. If the shifter community found out it could be a cause for war for the human government to do that. Then she finds a mage's house and meets two women who tell her about it. The new work comes with perks. They help her in her divorce. Unfortunately her soon to be ex wants to talk to her. Then her office is attacked. She is bitten and she wakes to see Mr First Class, Merrick fighting another wolf. In her muddled state she knows she needs to get out. She finally manages it and finds herself being hunted by a vampire. She heads into the mage's house. The house keeps the vampire away then she passes out again. When she wakes she's in the house. The house has a soul. It wants her to stay. Her wounded arm is sort of healed. Gah!She eats and then goes to sleep. When she's awake she's back in her own apartment. The mage's house zapped her home because she was too tired to leave on her own. When she goes to bathroom she looks in the mirror and HOLY MOLY!!! It's her but it isn't. The bite had to have taken a toll on her DNA but that's not how it's suppose to be. It's either that or the mage's house triggered something inside her. Two later she's taken to Merrick;s office. She is no longer working for the ministry. She's now a shifter and subject to the laws. He gives a couple of papers to explain what may happen. Great homework. Then she's told she's to go to the Facility. What, NO! To add insult to injury she has to meet with her ex. She and her solicitor and her ex with her sister with his solicitor meet. She has a laptop where she has the vid she made of the two of them going at it. Then it's revealed that since she's a shifter now their marriage has been annuled. Her last name is the name of her mate...the Alpha Prime, Merrick. KILL ME NOW!!! When she questions him she gets the idea that he would not have accepted while she was human. Great two men who didn't want her. Now she's at the facility and all she wants to do is scream every time someone calls her alpha mate. At the Facility she meets a really nice young woman who bakes the most delicious cupcakes. A few hours later she dies trying to shift. She needs space and heads out to run only to find the vampire she met outside the mage's cottage has found her. Merrick comes for her then on their way to his home they find themselves in a trap. She grabs Merrick's cell and calls Ryker and tells him what's happened and follow the cell. Then she's taken. The Human First have are and plan to make an example of her. When the magic hunter is called he finds out that she's the Alpha Prime's mate he says they better run because their family line will be totally dead if they harm her. The chatty guy hits the magic hunter and then takes the little box that keeps her from shifting. When it's gone he puts wolfsbane in her mouth and her inner wolf goes ballistic. She shifts and that;s when Merrick arrives. When he tries to get her to shift back she doesn't follow...they discover she's that rare sigma. Now Merrick is going for revenge. She tells him it was her ex husband. The fight is going to be either intense or really boring. Depends on how well she can control her inner self. Oh yeah, she's not a separate from her wolf they are one. Heaven help Human First. A fascinating and stirring story that keeps the reader enthralled and yelling GO LARK!!!.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Ok, I'll just drop the mic right right here, right now for Ms Thomas! THIS author continues to blow my mind! THIS author continues to produce a read, time and again, of such brilliance, I'm at a loss for words! THIS author has complete command of my emotions and boy does she tug HARD! Her words, hard hitting prose, lays bare emotions like no other. But it's not only my emotions she holds in her capable hands, it's her unrivalled storytelling that captures me, it's the plot that sinks me under a spell I'm helpless to evade, it's the characters that are so splendidly crafted, moulded carefully, that each one is immensely impactful, each one forges a new scar on my soul, each one I carry like a badge of honour, seared into me forever.
When Lark discovers the ultimate betrayal, her raw emotions are so real, so heart wrenching, they wrap themselves around my heart and squeeze....see? Barely into chapter one and Brogan has me in a state! Being cheated on is the least of her problems, the VERY least, because what happens next was a mind spin of note, to me as well as to Lark. She thought leaving the old and embracing the new life she's chosen will be her ticket to normal. Did she get it wrong! The changes, the challenges with her newfound, umm, abilities are threatening her sanity, but THEN...OMG what happens THEN is more than earthshattering! I swear, if someone has bopped me over the head I doubt I could have been more stunned! If Lark thought leaving her scumbag husband was starting a new uncomplicated life, heck a brick, she ain't seen nothing yet! A chance attack changes everything.
Lark is my hero, she's so warm and kind and caring, she isn't a pushover, she takes action, she's strong, she's brave, she's feisty...oh boy is she ever feisty! Even through ALL that's happened to her, she refuses to roll over, for anyone! I almost felt privileged to have her thoughts and emotions permeate through me. I KNEW her, I FELT her, I LOVED her! And her encounters with Merrick? Glorious! As for him, let me put my tongue back in my mouth first... he's yummy, he's tough, he's resolute, he's protective, he's patient. And best of all? He is a gentleman, never demanding, always supportive. Something that was dearly missing in Lark's life, until now. The romance, slow and steady, ignites pages, so sigh worthy. Ok, a few wobbles were experienced but that's what makes it real. When Merrick uttered these words to Lark "You lit up my world like the sun breaking through a storm" I nearly melted in a puddle! And the ultimate metamorphoses of Lark is a beautiful vision brought to life by this extremely talented author, these words resonate, "Like a butterfly, I emerged from the wreckage stronger, freer, and finally able to embrace the life I was meant to have" And she did, and she does...
This read was SPLENDABULOUS! Capturing, riveting, engrossing, fast paced emotional, exquisite and sublime! And that bonus scenes? Hells bells, if I WASN'T already head over heels in love with Merrick, this would have been the clincher. But I was and it just made the spark in my tummy flare! Absolutely superb! That little tidbit teaser at the end, well heck! My tummy is aflutter in anticipation!
Oh my god what a read, this was absolutely fantastic. Hooked from the first few pages I found this incredibly hard to put down, simply put I LOVED everything about this, every paragraph, every sentence, every word. Now I must confess, I've had this author on my TBR pile for quite some time and I'm literally kicking myself for not picking up her books sooner (an oversight that is definitely being corrected as we speak). Because now I know I'm going to have to read everything Ms Thomas has ever written, I couldn't and can't get enough of this fantastic author and I can't wait to see where she will take me next.
After catching her husband of twenty seven years in bed with her sister, Lark leaves everything she has ever known to take a job within a shifter community to get over her betrayal. But when she is attacked at her new office after working late by rogue shifters, she is left with more than scars. Having to navigate her change from human to shifter, can Lark learn to trust the gorgeous packmaster who wants to help ease her transition into her new life. And more importantly can she learn to trust herself.
Well hell, what's not to love about Lark. Kind, sweet, smart and caring this girl definitely goes through the wringer straight off the bat. Finding her scuzzy husband in bed with none other than her sister, Lark is doubly betrayed by the two people she loves most. You bet my heart went out to her over this, and as heartbroken as she is, I utterly admired her for her poise, dignity and strength on how she handled the situation before leaving. Of course Lark just wants to pick up the shattered remains of her life and to do that she takes a job in the last place her scumbucket husband would look to find her. But if normality is what she wanted well let's just say she's not going to get that either, thrown yet another curve ball she now has to adjust to a new life and new her. There wasn't one thing I didn't like about this character, and one of the best things I adored about her was watching her grow, from someone who second guessed herself at every turn to a feisty, brave badass who knows her own mind. Damn this girl was fantastic.
And as much as I loved Lark, I totally adored Merrick, this tall, gorgeous swoon worthy shifter, who literally melted me into a puddle of goo as soon as he walked on the page is just perfect. Protective, and fierce he has a softer side that just makes you go weak at the knees. He's there for Lark when she needs someone the most, supporting her through one of the toughest times in her life, he is the ultimate gentleman, respectful and caring and you can't help but fall in love with him.
I also had a soft spot for Riker, his sense of humor really had me giggling at times especially when he was teasing Lark. Assigned as her bodyguard he is almost as protective of her as Merrick, and the fact he's a damn nice guy underneath it all, you can't help but love him too.
Yep this book had everything for me, action, humor a nice slow burn romance with wonderful characters. Book two in this series can't come quick enough for me, so I'll have to console myself in the meantime time with reading Ms Thomas's back catalogue and I know I'll enjoy every second of it. Highly recommend 😁
Bitten Shifter was a casual, fast-paced read that kept me entertained. Brogan Thomas introduces us to Lark, a 40-something woman navigating betrayal, supernatural surprises, and a new life she never saw coming. It’s refreshing to follow a main character with life experience rather than the usual teen heroine. Lark handles her whirlwind of challenges with grace, humor, and resilience. I loved her first fight scene—it was so cool—and how she’s strong without being overpowered. The scene where Merrick reveals himself as Lark's mate and the Alpha Prime? I was cackling. It was dramatic in the best way possible! That said, I really wanted more development between Merrick and Lark. Merrick feels like he’s just there—no backstory, minimal personality beyond loving Lark. While he drops a swoon-worthy line—“My favorite color is the color of your eyes”—there’s not much bonding or slow-burn romance. It’s more like Lark goes from attraction to love without those heart-fluttering moments you get in K-dramas. I was screaming for more romance! One of my favorite things was Lark’s sarcasm and wit. Lines like, “Why not throw an ancient, psychotic vampire into the mix? If life’s going to pile on, it might as well be over-the-top,” perfectly capture her attitude. And when she reflects, “Fate has not just come knocking—it’s kicked the door off its hinges,” you can’t help but root for her. The supporting characters—Jo, Sandra, Alice, Danya, and Mary—had so much potential! I wish they’d appeared more, as they seemed like they could have been great friends for Lark. Aside from Riker, Lark doesn’t really form close friendships, which felt like a missed opportunity. I also think Lark owning the wizard house would’ve been awesome! I’m curious how that storyline will play out in the next book. Plot-wise, there’s a lot packed into 300 pages—sometimes it felt like multiple books’ worth of arcs were squeezed into one. Every ten chapters, a new twist would pop up, which kept things exciting but occasionally rushed. Still, the setting and premise are fascinating, and I wouldn’t have minded a longer book to flush everything out. Overall, Bitten Shifter was an enjoyable read with an intriguing world and a relatable, resilient heroine. While the romance fell a bit flat for me, I loved the fast-paced plot and Lark’s journey. If you enjoy shifter romances without heavy spice and with a strong, mature FMC, this is worth picking up! I read it in a day and had fun from start to finish.

Finishing her project early, Lark Emerson unexpectedly arrives home and sees clothing scattered all over the floor. She heads upstairs and finds her husband Paul and her sister Dove having a good time on her bed! They don’t even notice her, so she takes out her phone and records their activities… because she may be needing evidence soon when she files for divorce. With the loud music drowning out her presence, she turns around and goes downstairs to be violently sick. Twenty-eight years of marriage are over. Before she does something violent, she needs to leave. A client had given her flowers and champagne as a thank you gift. She ripped off the flowers from the stems and threw them at the bottom of the stairs so they would know she had stopped by and she dumps her rings on the kitchen counter along with two long-stemmed glasses and the champagne! It spares her leaving a note. Paul will figure it out.
When she reaches the Sector Border, it provides a 5-mile strip where humans can reside, but they need a work visa. Any deeper than that and they are trespassing into shifter territory. She is exhausted and stops at a hotel. She has worked for shifters in the past and has a high security clearance, so maybe she can find something. After 2 days, she has secured a job and a courier would deliver the contract. But when a rogue pack breaks into her office and attacks, she bitten and badly wounded. She passes out and wakes to find a white wolf and a larger dark-gray wolf fighting in the stairwell. The gray wolf’s eyes remind her of Merrick. There will be many changes in her life as she deals with supernaturals and what she seems to see herself becoming. To her surprise, her body heals quickly and her eyesight and hearing have gone far beyond human levels. Her entire body seems to have changed. She has become stronger and able to stand up for herself. When Paul tries to claim his wife (because he needs her salary or will lose the house), he is informed by Merrick the marriage is annulled and the video stored on Lark’s computer as evidence let the parties involved see that Paul was lying. But when Merrick says Lark has taken her mate’s name, Paul and Dove have nothing more to say. And Merrick tells them Lark will be mated to the Alpha Prime… HIM. Will she have a choice for her future? Clan she trust him? And is he the someone she hoped for who will love her forever? (Lots more excitement will follow, but I don’t want my review to run longer than the book!)
Lark is a woman in her 40's. She's been happily married for around 30 years, or so she thought. After walking in on her husband and her sister together in her bed, she leaves and doesn't turn back. Taking a job offer she almost turned down, she moves into the shifter sector for a Ministry IT job. After an attack at her job, she is wounded and ends up turning into a shifter. Now she must not only navigate the transition, but her ex-husband, an anti-shifter group and an insane vampire as well. This is another absolutely amazing book by Brogan! She really makes you feel all the emotions throughout the story. Lark has had her life upended and goes through the entire range of feelings - from numb to anger to happiness and everything in between. As a reader, you really get into her head space and feel those emotions with her as well. She is so relatable, especially since I am close to her age. She starts off as kind of a pushover, never making a fuss. As the story goes on, she learns to find her voice and her true self. She's a strong, capable woman with morals. Despite everything her ex has done to her, she still does not want harm to come to him. She won't back down for anyone, including Merrick. Which leads to a surprising discovery about herself and her powers as well! Merrick is definitely book boyfriend material! He is stoic and professional, almost cold when we meet him, but Lark has a way of thawing him out. He is fiercely loyal and protective - the perfect match for Lark. He's everything she never knew she needed. And he has more patience than he should with her ex Paul. OMG the solicitor scene had me cheering. And his patience with her is definitely noteworthy. Lark doesn't know what she wants or deserves half the time, but he just waits for her. He gives here the perfect balance of space and comfort, letting her work through her emotions but letting her know he is there. The action and suspense in this book had me holding my breath and biting my nails. Almost from the beginning, when she is being hunted at her job the tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife. You can't help but keep reading to find out what will happen. And it's told in the same "voice" as her other books. If I had not known who the author was before reading it, I would have after I started. She has a unique and wonderful style of writing that I absolutely adore! I am already in love with this new series!

I definitely enjoyed reading Bitten Shifter. There aren't enough standalone modern fantasy books, and I enjoy that this series will be a bunch of standalones.
However- because it was a standalone, it felt like there were too many plot points, and not enough interaction between our 2 main characters. It kind of shoved 2-3 books worth of plot into a shorter book, with A LOT of life altering-decisions, and quite frankly, she moved residences like 6 times in this book, and all for mostly short amounts of time. Wild.
I did love our FL, she was cool and collected, and made rational decisions befitting her 47 year old age. I appreciated her go with the flow attitude, while also being strong and independent. A lot of authors write strong women as hot-headed, hormone driven, and childish. Not the case for our Lark.
I enjoyed the pacing of the book until we got to the end of the divorce meeting. It felt rushed from there, SPOILERS packing in her being at the school facility for ONE DAY, Alice dying, getting attacked, moving in with the alpha but getting kidnapped, and on and on. That's not even half the book. The Magic Ministry visit felt unneeded. I don't think we even learned what happened to Paul, or if we did, it was so fast I didn't remember it.
Because of the crazy events in a short amount of time, we didn't actually get much interaction between Merrick and Lark. When we did, it was usually Merrick dropping the ball, putting his foot in his mouth, and generally kind of sucking. He is supposed to be this big bad alpha, but the only time he actually fights is in the attack when she gets bitten. This doesn't leave much room for them to grow emotionally close to each other, and I feel like because our character is so go with the the flow, she's just like 'whatevs, I guess I love you since we're mates.'
I think this author and series has so much potential, but would love the focus to be a bit more on the relationship, since this is a romance series, and have less action. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the action, but I don't think it's needed in this case. Simplicity is your friend with a standalone.
This book is a wild rollercoaster ride!! I was slow to warm up to the story, but once it took off it never let up. Lark walks in on her hubby and sister doing the nasty and leaves, hoping to never look back. She takes a job offer working for the shifters in their sector, hoping to build a new life. Fate has big plans for her, including getting bitten and turned into a werewolf. But the fun doesn't stop there. Add in an ancient vampire stalker, a fated mate, an ex-husband bent on revenge, and a band of fanatical human rights activists, and you have a recipe for non-stop action.
Brogan Thomas really knows how to weave a suspenseful story. I couldn't put this book down. This was an all-nighter as I just could not find a good place to stop. Lark is a strong willed FMC and isn't putting up with any BS from the big bad wolves in her pack. Merrick is big and bad "Mr. Corporate I am the head of the shifter world so do as I say" but finds out a little strong willed shifter mate just isn't impressed. The sparks that fly on their way to HEA are a lot of fun.
The worldbuilding is great with a balance of power that keeps all the factions in check. It is well thought out and logical. There is a sentient magical house that I just loved, too, that was a nice touch of whimsy. The supporting characters are a lot of fun, as they aid and abet Lark in confounding Merrick. I really enjoyed all aspects of this book, although Merrick did get on my nerves a little for the first 2/3 of the book with his domineering and standoffish manners. He did grow on me and I was Team Merrick by the end.
I recommend this book for all paranormal romance lovers, especially those who love political maneuverings. There is a second book in the works, and I am eagerly looking forward to more of this world.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I love the idea of this book, but the execution was infuriating. The premise is entertaining and intriguing, the characters could be likeable if they were developed a bit further, but the entire thing felt rushed. It's almost like the author had ideas on a bullet point list, and wrote around them without taking the time to build out the details. There are enormous plot holes, there's no relationship building between characters, and reasoning behind many of the decisions felt forced. I almost wish this had been a three book series to allow the characters time to really develop. There were so many opportunities! A few examples: Lark is 47 and her entire appearance changes after being bitten, but there's half a page of reflection about it before it's forgotten when it could have been a huge character development moment. Merrick and Riker (a name I thought Lark gave him, but suddenly everyone uses it?) talk about how she's selfless and brave with barely any time to get to know her when it could've been a longer process. She's able to instantly learn to master both her magics just by someone telling her what to do, with no struggles at all, when that also would have been a good opportunity to develop and grow. There's the weird scene with the doctor wanting to do a bunch of tests that is quickly dismissed and not explored at all. There's the tension with all the other women who are interested in Merrick, but that's never explored (e.g., how does Lark fit into shifter society when she's suddenly the mate of the most desirable male?). Her ex and sister were almost cartoonish in the confrontation scene; it could've been much more nuanced. And on and on.
That having been said, I finished it, and I definitely enjoyed the premise. I just wish it had been written with a bit more care.
This story has good bones. I liked Lark and her need to both be 'badarse' and also not stand out too much. This is like a Midlife magic story with a woman in her 40's who has left a marriage and is building a new life. Then of course she meets a romantic interest, a sentient house and is very very special .
The snippets of a world where Humans, Shifters, Vampires and Mages coexist is not that unique but the way they are depicted here is different enough from other books to have my attention. But that is just it. We only get snippets. We don't get to see Lark learning to be a shifter through training, she barely stays in the training facility for a day. She is shown to already have great control, partly because of her designation, but that is just a cop out.
I was disappointed with the romance. It wasn't really a slow burn as we do not see Merrick and Lark interact in a situation that is not stressful or life threatening. I mean we didn't see one date and the declarations of love are being flung around. And don't even get me started on the ending. Lark was somewhat rational up to that point and her going off on Merrick and not forgiving him for not telling her something that would have put her in further danger was just unreasonable. I just felt that the conflict was forced in there.
All in all it was an OK read that could have been great.
