As both a teacher and a children’s author, I absolutely loved Rap Kid! I introduced my Year 6 class to MC Grammar on World Book Day after watching one of his brilliant book-themed raps. They were instantly hooked—so much so that they were inspired to write their own raps afterwards! That kind of creative spark is gold in the classroom.
The story follows Z—short for ZERO, the number of words he speaks at school. Why? Because every time he opens his mouth, it comes out in rhyme. Every. Single. Time. But everything changes when the Royal Rap Rumble comes to town, and with the help of his legendary English teacher Mr G, his beatboxing best friend SFX, and a full hip-hop makeover, Z transforms into RAP KID.
Can he conquer his fears and claim the golden mic? This uplifting, funny, and modern tale is packed with energy, heart, and big beats. It’s not only relatable and fun for older children, but it also tackles deeper themes like mental health, kindness, and self-belief in a way that’s accessible and meaningful.
As a children’s author myself, I’ve followed MC Grammar on social media for a while and love how he brings stories to life through rhyme and rhythm. His passion for books is contagious, and Rap Kid is a perfect example of how he bridges the gap between literacy and music.
To quote my class: “It’s SICK!” And honestly, I couldn’t agree more.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the chance to read this book.
