The latest generation of Ghostbusters face off against the ghost of Captain Kidd and his fleet of ghostly pirates!

Now that they’re getting the hang of busting ghosts in the Big Apple, the Ghostbusters’ increasing notoriety is throwing them for a loop.

While Trevor tries to plan a “friendiversary” celebration for him and Lucky, Phoebe struggles to genuinely connect with her classmates. Things seem to be looking up when she meets Sammy, a fellow outsider who might be a real friend instead of just a social media follower. But friendships new and old have to take a back seat to more immediate concerns when Phoebe’s new friend uses a cursed saber and accidentally summons the ghost of Captain Kidd, who threatens to transform NYC into a ghostly pirate town!

Jump back in with the Ghostbusters in the second comics series collection, exploring their adventures in New York! Written by David M. Booher, with art by Aviv Or, colors by Cris Peter, and lettering by Comicraft’s Jimmy Betancourt.

I’m always going to be bitter that this is the current Ghostbusters comic series over the IDW one, so it would need to be pretty spectacular to get high marks from me and this just wasn’t. The art was awesome and as always I was happy for my cameos, but putting so much of the emotional weight into side characters who were just introduced was off putting. Also having a kid walk around NYC with a sword in his backpack to protect himself from bullies was… a choice. Like I grasp he needed to say the thing on the sword to summon the ghost captain but it was actually stupider for him to say it to the bullies then say find it in a box and read it aloud a la The Goonies (which also could have opened up sooo many more pirate references). This was just a let down and I really hope that Dark Horse takes note of the story telling problems rather than let something as iconic as Ghostbusters whither away.

Let's see...Someone approved the plot where the mentally ill teen brought a weapon to school to get his bullies and we treat him like one of the good guys.

Great job, Dark Horse. Way to read the room.
