Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer, and a leading representative of English literature. He was greatly admired by many authors, including Jorge Luis Borges, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling and Vladimir Nabokov.
Most modernist writers dismissed him, however, because he was popular and did not write within their narrow definition of literature. It is only recently that critics have begun to look beyond Stevenson's popularity and allow him a place in the Western canon.
First classics buddy read with @tessa — I really enjoyed it! Even though I already knew a bit about the plot twist, it still surprised me and turned out differently than I expected, so Tessa and I could really wonder and guess what was going on.
This short story collection started off really strong with Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It also ended on a strong note with the Misadventures of John Nicholson.
I think I liked them the most because of the balance between good and evil, the fact that those stories were a little longer, and that there was a certain tension in them.
