I've read this book as a source for a research project about how teaching photography deals with the cultural impact of new media. For that assignment i was disappointed when i read this book. the essays ended before the facebook boom and the recent impact in visual culture like 'selfies', phone photography, instagram, etc... The author anticipated a few technological innovations (and missed a few altogether). In most of the Essays A.D. Coleman took a distinct outsider perspective describing (then) new technologies, and (as time made out) missing the overlapping impact of some technologies on photography (smartphones, limited (mostly external) insight in the impact of the internet, ...)
It's a useful insight if you're teaching IT or the more technical parts of digital photography to older students.
(but to add a bit of additional context for younger readers of this book; digital photography was theoretically possible in the 70's but made it to consumers in the 90's, Kodak went bankrupt and is getting a reboot as a new company, the same goes for Polaroid, compact cameras have been fading out the last five years with the advent of smartphones)
