In Troubled Spirits, we meet Annie Waters, a teenage girl who never believed in spirits. She didn’t even buy her Mom’s favorite story, about how the ghost of her grandma visiting her when Annie was born, and gave the newborn her blessing. When her Dad dies in a car accident, Annie starts blaming herself for what happened. Along with her Mom, she moves in with her Grandpa, in another town, trying to make a new start.

When her best friend Harmony drags her along to the abandoned, supposedly haunted Caldwell School, in search for ghosts, Annie hears the ghost’s voice warning her to get out. But even when she rushes outside, an uncanny cold feeling clings to her, unwilling to let her go. Even the next morning, it seems like a dark presence is haunting her. The girl who never believed in ghosts may have to start believing when the dead start chasing her.

The dark presence in the Caldwell School isn’t the only ghost Annie and her friends encounter, but it’s certainly the most vicious one. And for some reason, the ghost seems to have a vendetta against Annie. Along with her friends, she tries to figure out who the ghost is, why he wants to hurt her, and how she can stop him. Meanwhile, she meets a boy who captures her heart – Drew – and tries to come to terms with the guilt she still feels over her father’s passing.

Annie is a bubbly character, and she manages to keep a positive atittude most of the time – and when she doesn’t, it’s perfectly acceptable. I understood her guilt over what happened to her Dad, and I liked how the book didn’t just blink past that, but made it an interesting point for Annie’s character arch. The connection to the past works great as well. Although I figured out what was happening halfway through, I was still very entertained, and I’m sure readers less familiar with the genre will have more trouble figuring out what’s going on.

Harmony was a great best friend and sidekick. It’s obvious the two girls are the best of friends, and that they’d do anything to help each other. Harmony would go through fire to help Annie. You don’t often find such good friends, especially not in YA books, so this was a great plot point. Mike and Callie were fun too (Annie’s other two best friends) and Drew was all kinds of cute and charming.

The writing was solid, and the pacing worked, with a slow build up at the start and then picking up steadily as the book progressed. Things wrap up nicely in the end, without any loose ends. A great book for anyone who enjoys young adult paranormal.

I received this book from the author and from Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock.
Troubled Spirits is a YA paranormal story.
Annie Walters is forced to move to a new school when her father dies in a car accident. She is whisked away with her mother to live with her grandpa in Maine. She becomes best friends with Harmony an amateur ghost hunter. Going along with her adventures she finds herself drawn into the supernatural world. She struggles to understand what's happening to her but she's running out of time an evil spirit is after her putting her and her friend's lives in danger.

This was an easy quick read. The mystery draws you in and keeps you wondering till the end. I enjoyed the characters. Annie was an independent girl always trying to protect others. Her friends each had their unique personalities making them fun to read. The plot was good but some of the story was predictable.
I would recommend this to any YA fans who enjoy a ghost adventure and mystery.
I rate this 4 fangs.

Troubled Spirits was an enjoyable read that fits well with the YA audience. Besides being a supernatural thriller, it has romance and humor with characters that I found likeable and realistic. On the more critical side, the story was predictable, but I didn’t mind because it was told in an engaging style that kept me looking forward to reading it every night. There also were a lot of editing and formatting errors, but they didn’t hinder the storytelling. Lastly, and I suppose this is just a personal thing, I didn’t find the story’s resolution very satisfying through using spells, charms, and rituals. I can’t identify with those kinds of things since they don’t hold any relevance in my life either in a literal or symbolic sense. Overall, recommended for YA as a good mystery and page-turner.

Great ghost story. The story grabs you right from the beginning, and the pages turn fast. The characters are well-defined and interesting. And it's packed full of ghosts. I would only caution that this book may have you looking over your shoulder!

Annie sees ghosts. Harmony, is an amateur ghost hunter. It's no wonder the two of them are best friends. Determined to help the ghost in the old, abandoned school building transition to the other side, Annie, Harmony and their friends put the building on lock down, just like Harmony's idol, Zak Baggins of Ghost Adventures fame, but when they do, they get more than they bargained for. Before they know it, a ghost has attached itself to Annie and Harmony's hurt and in the hospital. Who is the ghost in the old school? Why is the ghost so drawn to Annie? And what's the story with Annie's new boyfriend, Drew?

In Troubled Spirits, Teri Lee pens a good, old-fashioned ghost story that answers these questions, and forces the reader to question what happens to spirits after people die, particularly those who are...well...troubled. I love that Harmony patterns her ghost adventures after Zak's. Ghost Adventures is a guilty pleasure of mine, and at times, reading Lee's book was like finding myself in an episode of the show.

Though at times the story seems formulaic (I admit I knew the story with Drew long before Lee reveals his secret), I kept reading because I wanted to see if I was right. And even though I was, I wasn't disappointed at the revelation. I'm an adult, author and English teacher. I deconstruct literature for a living. A teen audience might not be as literary device savvy as to figure it out and I think the average teen would find the ending the bombshell Lee intended.

Troubled Spirits is good, clean fun that delves into the world of modern ghost hunting with two, more than capable, female protagonists that take care of themselves and the big bad in town, on their own, in true Buffy the Vampire Slayer fashion. The way Harmony and Annie and the gang handle the ghosts and themselves is more than enough to make Zak Baggins proud.

Note: I was gifted an eCopy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Although I don't read too many YA novels I was glad to have read this one. Teri has a way of pulling the reader into the story and keeping the action and suspense going throughout. The characters in the book are easily believed and act as the age they are. With Annie, the protagonist, having to cope with the loss of her father, and the fact that she blames herself for his death, and the pressure of moving to a new town half the country away during her highschool years, she may act aloof sometimes but what else would a normal teenager do? The story progresses and takes the small town feel to a level that someone who has lived in a small town would feel at home with.

This book was hard to put down and I kept turning the pages wanting to find out what would happen.

Well written, face paced and fantastic story. I don't usually give 5 stars however this book deserves everyone of them. This story has everything in it - paranormal, suspense, action and even romance along with a cleverly detailed plot that kept me reading into the night leaving me with a lack of sleep. From the first chapter to the last I was mesmerized by the spells I felt had been placed on me demanding that I keep reading and not book the book down. I hope this author has more planned for Annie and Harmony's paranormal investigations, however the story did have an ending that can stand on its own. I encourage everyone to read this book. It's an easy read without ever being boring.
