Looking Up At the Stars, I Know Quite Well That For All They Care, I Can Go To Hell...
THE HEARTWOOD: A Novel by Amity Gaige
4 stars. Valerie Gillis disappeared without a trace while hiking on the vast Appalachian Trail...
She was only 200 miles from the terminus at Mt. Katahdin, when she left the trail and just vanished...
She was reported missing after she failed to meet up with her husband to resupply where the trail crosses route 27 in Wyman Township...
A massive search was conducted by the Maine Warden Service for the woman whose trail name was Sparrow...
This was a fictional tale of survival in nature's vast Appalachian forests and trails, which span fourteen states.
Much like the trail itself, this story had its ups and downs and moments when, as a reader, I just needed to sit and take a break for a spell before continuing on.
Overall, it was a good story. There were a few patches when the storytelling dragged a little, but the biggest problem I had was the formatting of the Kindle version, where words were incorrectly split up without a dash.
If you like stories of survival or enjoy hiking stories, you'll probably settle right into this one. SEA WIFE by this author about a family that inherits a boat which they plan to sail from the Caribbean to home is an excellent story.
Sometimes it's really good to give in to the hype. This is one of those books, and I'm really glad I picked it up.
This story of "Sparrow", the 42 year old nurse lost while hiking the Appalachian Trail in Maine, gave me so many feelings. The environment was written so well I could almost feel the rocks beneath my feet. The characters, especially the lost hiker and the Warden who headed the search for her, were beautifully written. The elements of mother and daughter relationships was probably my favorite part of the book. I loved Beverly and her two sisters, Valerie and her mother, and Lena and her daughter Catherine. Lena, the elderly woman in the nursing home was such a complex and interesting character, I was especially drawn to her chapters.
I agree with all the hype, this is a wonderful book and I would recommend to just about anyone.
This was a wonderful read from start to finish! The female characters were very strong and easy to care about. I loved the setting, the Appalachian Trail, and the characters along the way. I especially loved Lt. Bev with her amazing attributes and all her insecurities about her personhood. She was an especially well drawn character. The pacing of the story was excellent. I recommend this book especially to people who enjoy camping, hiking, and life on the wild side.
Compelling story and so well written. I had no idea I would become deeply interested in the Appalachian Trail, hiking 2000 miles and the many details of both.
