About the author

Michele Pariza Wacek

64 books1,431 followers
A USA Today Bestselling, award-winning author, Michele taught herself to read at 3 years old because she wanted to write stories so badly. It took some time (and some detours) but now she does spend much of her time writing stories. Mystery stories, to be exact. They're clean and twisty, and range from psychological thrillers to cozies, with a dash of romance and supernatural thrown into the mix. If that wasn't enough, she posts lots of fun things on her blog, including short stories, puzzles, recipes and more, at MPWNovels.com.

Michele grew up in Wisconsin, (hence why all her books take place there), and currently lives there after spending nearly 30 years living in the mountains of Prescott, Arizona, with her husband and southern squirrel hunter Cassie.

When she's not writing, she's usually reading, hanging out with her dog, or watching the Food Network and imagining she's an awesome cook. (Spoiler alert, she's not. Luckily for the whole family, Mr. PW is in charge of the cooking.)

If you're on vacation or merely wish you were, this anthology is the perfect companion. Packed (stuffed, really) full of mysteries, a myriad of contemporary authors take you on holidays with your favourite cosy sleuths. There's something for everyone in this massive collaboration. As a bonus, each of the stories can serve as an introduction to the individual authors' popular detectives, giving the reader a chance to develop a bond with new characters and series.

I started at the beginning and sojourned with various P.I.s for well over a week. What a delightful time spent in sunny settings when the weather was rainy and miserable! All the care and attention put into this work was absolutely appreciated.

Thank you to BookSirens and all the authors who participated in this treat. I received a digital ARC for free and am leaving my opinion, honest and true.

I received an ARC of this book. I found this to be a very enjoyable collection of cozy mysteries. Each story is a quick read, so perfect for when reading time is limited. Also, what better way to sample stories by multiple authors? I will be reading some of their other books. Great book!

Get ready to plot your course on this tour of mystery that’s par for the course. There might even be spies and of course what’s a mystery without someone’s demise. It really is immersive and cosy fun. There’s lots in here for everyone a crazy journey of sleuths and truths. Panoramic vistas and hands up mister …well ok that last bit might not have been but happen it might who knows with a cosy …remains to be seen.Whether it be a snowy castle or tropical shores ,a smorgasbord across the board . I promise you this you will not be bored. The cities are alive ,vibrant as well but there’s death around the corner, best give the coroner a bell ,in due course because another death has occurred and this is absurd. This book is truly superb ,if you want to know more read the blurb or better still buy the book it’s sure to thrill ,definitely worthy of spending a bill or two alright. I was reading well into the night . The storylines are crisp as the fresh fallen snow ,the storytelling as compellingly warm as a tropical isle ,it moves you along with a song in your heart and simply immersive from the very start. Great writing. I loved every bit . Simply exquisitely warming and yes it’s cliche but they were simply charming .These fantastic authors I’ve had the pleasure before and adore and there’s some I haven’t read their works before . A nice little taste of what they can do and what their writings all about . One things for certain ,without a doubt . You will have fun trying to work them out. I like nothing but sleuthing along ,and with these authors you can’t go wrong ,sometimes I get deep and delve into the character’s psyche and others I’m thinking crikey!

Overview: What happens when you have a vacation coming up, and you need a book for the trip? Mrs. Wacek has collected novellas from other cozy mystery authors. Every novella in this collection has one uniting thread. Each case involves the sleuth being on a vacation or other kind of trip. How did the selections do? Let's find out.

Dislikes: We had a novella from Ms. Winter. This is an author that I have a personality clash with. Needless to say, I found her addition to be one of the least favorite novellas in the set.

Mrs. Marple's Holly and Nick story was a bit lacking. There seemed to be too many questions left unanswered at the end. For the most part it read like an extended outline. Perhaps it was meant to be a longer book?

Likes: Mrs. Wacek's story was one of the best ones included in the list.

We get a story landing in the Roaring 20's with some odd situations that seem quite intriguing.

There's also a different kind of rafting trip, as well as a more carnivorous antagonist.

Conclusion: This was a decent book. If you are a fan of cozy mysteries, and anthology collections, then this book is for you. Enjoy the read.

This book was a collection of stories by different authors with a common theme in the stories. Every book was about someone on vacation that is involved in solving a murder. The stories are all varied, in different settings all over the world. I found every book to be interesting, catching and holding my attention thorough each and every story. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I discovered many authors that I will follow up on for future readings. Strongly recommend reading.

tolerable

These books are rather average. The writing in some is decent, not so much in others. Editing is good in some, not so much in others. Two paragraphs duplicated one pair right after the other is a mistake that should be very difficult to miss. In the last story, a character is standing by the window, looking out at the snowy evening at the same time she’s sitting at a table across the room doing something. I’m well aware that we all make mistakes. However, professional writers should do better and editors moreso.

I love checking out stories that aren't always on my radar. I grabbed this book because it contained new stories from two of my favorite authors, though.

I have been a fan of Michelle PW, her Redemption series has been some of the creepiest and scariest series I have ever read. However, it was her Aunt Charley series which captured my heart. And I loved the idea of Aunt Charley taking a vacation and Wyle flying across the country to save her. When Aunt Charley tries to stop a man from beating his wife while in Mexico, she ends up a suspect when he ends up ded the next day. This was a fun read!

Also, I have missed Sam Jones, the former soap opera star who trampled through Heywood and introduced me to one of my favorite characters, Annabelle style was stuck in the 80's and her morals were stuck in her teens. While she was sadly absent from this series… This story was still a walk through Nostalgia Park, as I remember growing up with Soap Operas, so Sam is one of my favorite characters.

So much fun!

Eclectic mix of mysteries by several authors.
A murder in Mexico where two “friends” have to work together.
A murder on a glamping vacation with a former forensic tech and a sheriff happen to be in attendance.
A mystery in Hawaii with two sisters-in-laws have to work together.
A murder at a historical Victorian fashion show.
A murder in a locked room in a castle in Scotland.
A murder in a small Colorado winery.
A murder on a cruise ship out of Florida.
A mystery surrounding an artist and a B&B.
A murder at a resort in Belize.
A mysterious disappearance on a witch-themed weekend. Would be helpful to know more of the back story to the series.
A mystery in Norway.
I received this as an ARC reader and am leaving my unbiased review.

A large anthology of cozy travel mysteries. Most are pretty average and typical plots. It is an excellent way to discover new characters and authors.

Goodreads does not have many of these books listed individually to include on my 2025 Book Challenge. Most are books, not novellas or short stories

Margaritas and Murder Michele Pariza Wacek Mexico, Los Cabos 1993, Charlie wins a trip and goes alone when her travel friend falls ill. She finds herself a suspect (of course) when she discovers a body (of course). Apparently, in 1993, one only needed a license. As she's a suspect, it is confiscated by Mexican police. Her policeman friend flies in to help her solve the murder. It makes the Mexican police look dumb. It was all too trope for me. Apparently, in previous books, she sells tea.... **

Plot Todd-EE Patti Larsen TWO friends experienced in law enforcement decide to go on a Glamping river raft trip. It was supposed to be a calm, relaxing meandering trip down Florida's Keys. Gee, what COULD go wrong? Once again, there are too many cliques with spoiled bride to be, her simping bridpal party, the rampant drinking, and murder. Yet, it worked with an interesting twist of a locked room mystery and Agatha Christie reveal. I also liked the idea of individual fancy rafts connecting to a group dining and entertainment raft and the dangers that entailed. ****

Leis Lies and Lethal Force Carolyn Dean Amanda and Christy are in Kauai, Hawaii, at a resort. From conversations and descriptions, it's obvious this is from a series, Amanda has encountered many mysteries. They are both busy Mom's and wives, and of course, things go wrong. The snooping and questioning just felt silly. It was irritating that there was little or no description about the island.**

Aspic and Old Lace Jayne Morrow This reader feels like she's missed something regarding this series. It begins and ends with 2 friends and one of them introducing her new manuscript. Which is the actual story. Liz is one of several characters who are Victorian history experts. Despite the trope of poisoned aspic, this time it works. There are numerous suspects and many red herrings to keep the intrigue up. ****.

Death at Thistle Inn Kitty Kildare Another locked room, Agatha Christie type plot. This time, the main character and her friend are trapped in a remote Scottish castle during a blizzard. It is supposed to be a historical 1920s mystery. It isn't very obvious with the exception of a Great War mention. The protagonist is unconventional with knowledge of death and dead bodies. She was not that interesting. It just did not feel very original or creative. **

Whodunit at the Winery Carly Winter According to minor references within the storyline, its apparent this story is part if a series. Except, Sam and Jordan are vacationing by exploring the countryside and wineries. It was an enjoyable read, but it's unlikely I will be reading the series. Sam had a former life she wanted to keep as secret as possible. Unfortunately, she is recognized. The couple discovered that not everyone is friendly at the local celebrity winery. And more than one person wanted the victim deaf. It is an interesting and fun read. ***

Port of No Return Wendy Neugent Apparently, there is a series with the main sleuth is an cruise ship entertainer with a very cool parrot. In this storyline, she is not the onlyones being detectives. Sadly, there was no mystery. It was obvious who was going to die. It was obvious what crimes were being committed. *

Midnight Flowerpot Fiasco Mona Marple This storyline actually got interesting. I only wish some of the descriptions were developed deeper, and the ending was rushed and felt unfinished. Another future book? The main characters are part of a Christmasy series. But, currently, on a seaside vacation where an unpopular artist is in danger.

Betrayed at Belize Laina Turner Safly, there is little or no interesting descriptions of Belize. Our protagonist wins an exclusive resort trip that includes an actual 24/7 butler. They both start looking into a mysterious murder. Despite it being a bit silly, it was a great story. ****

Witch napped BG Wood. There is a touch of paranormal in this book. Our protagonist is accompanying her dear friend to an author reading event. It is a paranormal romance novelist genre that she barely tolerates. Lots of weird or suspicious stuff happens, and she is asked to investigate. It was a very good storyline with possible foreshadowing of a new plot line in the series. ****

Cursed Cousins Joanne Keder This felt like a prequel to a cryptic new mystery series. Although it was based in Norway, it didn't feel like the author knew Norway. There are obviously going to be more books. There was little or no intrigue with the exception of heavy foreshadowing of questions needing answers. **

Anthology ~ this compilation is one of full length books rather than the short stories I thought it was. So it's a good value! I've posted a review for each of the books.

Story 1 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Margarita and Murder.....Michelle Pariza Wacek..... Cautionary tale! You're in a foreign country.....you needed a passport to get in ...you need it to get out! If you see something and don't know all the details and backstory ~ leave it be!

Story 2 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Todd EE........ Patti Larsen ......good mystery though definitely not a cozy mystery. Interesting plot twists and main characters though I don't feel the need for their personal information as to which team they play for..not necessary to the overall story. It's a bit grisly with the alligators!

Story 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Leis, lies, and lethal force ......Carolyn Dean...... loved the mystery! Amanda and her sister in law make a great crime solving duo. This is a cozy mystery series I would like to continue reading! Lots of action and a bit of humor too!

Story 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Aspic and Old Lace.......Jayne Morrow....great mystery and an interesting premise ~ it's a mystery within a story ~ author Anne Marie gives her friend Katrina her new book to beta read while she's recovering. The mystery is set at a Victorian festival, where Liz solves one murder and at (no spoilers!)............ she sets up the murderer and during the arrest there's a huge plot twist! Great cozy mystery!

Story 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Death At The Thistle Inn......Kitty Kildare....while Bridezilla rants about her wedding plans being disrupted ~ everyone is in for a huge shock when the planner is murdered. Excellent writing with many different little threads woven throughout the story making it quite tough to decide the 'who.' Fascinating ending!

Story 6 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Whodunit At The Winery....Carly Winter...nicely written mystery with a plot twist for the whodunit! Hopefully the characters will develop more in subsequent mysteries.

Story 7 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Point of No Return.....Wendy Neugent....delightful and gripping mystery at sea! This was a superior read! The reveal of the murderer was definitely a high point. But the best part of the book were the antics of Chico and the list of emails covering Meesha and Agatha! Good strong lead character in Olivia ~ so hopefully there'll be more of her adventures in the future!

Story 8 .⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️......The Midnight Flowerpot Fiasco......Mona Marple...this was a charming murder mystery that floats along to its conclusion ~ lots of action and suspects with motives ~ however, perhaps because of the strikingly beautiful descriptions of the flowerpots and the locale it's an easy relaxing read.

Story 9.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.....Blackmail in Belize......Laina Turner ...wow ....what an excellent mystery! The main characters of Trixie and the butler, Javier, suit each other perfectly and are very personable. Quite the twist on the ending! It's such a good read I could easily see this as a weekly television series featuring Javier paired with other guests who stay at the resort‼️

Story 10⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️....Witchnapped.....B.G. Wood.....Interesting read‼️Gina and Bernstein are excellent characters with backstories that hopefully come in future books. One minute the reader is racing along to the conclusion and ...poof.....shock ending! Loved it! I've not been a particular paranormal cozy fan in the past ~ however I will be reading more by this author.

Story 11⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Cursed Cousins and Crudités ......Joann Keder......family secrets mystery intertwined with modern day smuggling ~ quiet smooth storyline with no big high points ~ engaging characters with a non committal ending that speaks to forthcoming tales.

This is a wonderful collection of travel/vacation based short stories featuring eleven very talented writers. Usually when reading similar collections I find some I like very much, some not so much. However, although I'm familiar with only two of the authors, I really enjoyed all of the stories, enough to seek out books from those not familiar to me now. Specifically, I really enjoyed Carly Winter's Whodunit at the Winery. Having read every book in the Heywood Herbalist Cozy Mysteries series and each spinoff series, this one is special to me as it takes place after the last book where Samantha Rathbone and her boyfriend, Jordan have left the small town of Heywood, Arizona to travel around and enjoy various places in the U.S. A former soap opera star, she tends to be recognized wherever she goes, which can be quite humorous at times, and when they arrive in Cottonwood, Colorado to tour some wineries not only does she encounter some star struck characters, they also find themselves right in the middle of a murder investigation! Oh how I love these two characters, and I've missed them! Another author I have enjoyed over the years is Patti Larsen, and her shorty Plot Todd-EE as part of her Canary Key Cozy series was also fantastic. But if you are not familiar with the authors participating in this lovely collection, no worries, I found all the stories equally easy to follow and quite enjoyable! As someone who has loved detective stories since childhood, the title Murder Doesn’t Take a Vacation hooked me instantly—and I’m so glad to say it delivered exactly what it promised. This anthology is the perfect mix of cozy escapes and unexpected crimes, reminding us that even on vacation, danger can tag along.

I enjoyed every story, each bringing a fresh setting and twist while maintaining that lighthearted, cozy tone that makes the genre so comforting. Beaches, cruises, glamping trips—every location felt inviting, the kind of place you’d want to sit back with a cocktail in hand and a friend by your side…until a crime interrupts. That contrast between relaxation and suspense is exactly what made the anthology such a treat.

What I loved most was how easy it was to slip into each story’s atmosphere. You could almost feel the sun on your skin, the waves in the background, or the rustle of trees at a campsite. The anthology gave me the sense of being on a little getaway myself, with the bonus thrill of solving puzzles and crimes along the way.

This collection is perfect for cozy mystery lovers or anyone wanting a light yet thrilling read to match their own holiday mood. It’s fun, charming, and clever—just what you’d hope from a vacation-themed mystery set. Highly recommended!

Some stories better than others

Of the 11stories, I will comment on 3.
Plot Todd-EE by Patti Larsen. Throughout, I felt I was reading a story originally intended for middle grade or young YA. The plot and characters' actions are juvenile. The author appears to have added adult themes after the story was complete.

Aspic and Old Lace by Jayna Morrow. This is a story within a story. An interesting format. I read this story over a period of three days. I might have a different comment if I had read it in one sitting. When I reached the end, I asked myself, "Who are these people?" As I read further, I remembered. The main story was excellent.

Witchnapped by B. G. Wood. Not my usual reading material. The first four chapters were difficult for this non-witchy reader. Thereafter, the plot line improved although I felt like I had jumped in mid stream. Be warned! This is obviously part of a series, as are other stories in this book. So, if you don't enjoy never-ending stories, you won't want I continue reading this author.

Overall, these eleven stories are well-written, and I can recommend the book to others.

This book makes a great way to try new authors without going all in. I came for the Carly Winter tale which I enjoyed as expected. However, I got a chance with this book to be transported into other stories. You can pick and choice what you want and if one story is not for your you still have plenty more to enjoy. I was pleasantly surprised to find these are not just tiny novellas, the stories have some meat and some murder and some intrigue. With that said, I especially enjoyed Margaritas and Murder and plan to check out other books in her series. I think I have a few books moldering on my kindle I will be digging into.

Of course, there were others that got my attention from page one as well. Line 1 in the story Aspic and Old Lace definitely made me curious.

I would recommend this as a great way to check out new authors and keep up with other favorites.

Murder Doesn't Take a Vacation: A Vacation Cozy Mystery AnthologyEleven cozy mysteries by eleven different authors. You are sure to find a new author to stalk, oops I mean follow.
My review is Whodunit at the winery by Carly Winter.
Welcome to Cottonwood, Colorado. A cozy little town where we find our old friends Samantha and Jordan. Taking a long vacation traveling around to visit lots of new places, they find themselves in Cottonwood.
While at a tour of a winery they once again find themselves involved in a murder.
It is a good thing that they just happen to be a great team when it comes to murder mysteries.
I am hoping that this will lead to yet another great series by this author.

This collection of novellas was entertaining from the first story to the last. Vacations may be the last place you’d expect to become involved with a murder, but that’s what happened to the protagonists in these stories. The settings are varied, from Hawaii to Scotland, but the theme was the same: vacationers were called on to solve a murder. Three novellas stood out from rest, although all of them were enjoyable. “Aspic and Old Lace” by Jayna Morrow, “Whodunit at the Winery” by Carly Winter, and “Betrayed in Belize” by Laina Turner were exceptionally well written with clever plots and well developed characters. This anthology is a wonderful collection to take along on your next vacation, and may even give you some ideas to follow should you come across a murder!

I love a good anthology of short stories from time to time. You get a whole lot of cozy in a quick and easy read! Perfect book to take on vacation or sit by the pool with!

Whodunit at the Winery by Carly Winter
(Part of the Murder Doesn’t Take A Vacation Anthology)

The Samantha Rathbone mysteries continue! I love the Heywood Herbalist series and so happy to see this series continue with a whole new set of mysteries and adventures.

This time Sam and her boyfriend Jordon are in Colorado taking a wine tour when barrels loosen and kill their tour guide. Now it’s up to them to figure out if this misfortune was really meant for Sam.

A short and sweet novella that still had all the suspense and red herrings.

An anthology of cozy mysteries with an overall travel theme. As with any compilation of works, some are great, some are so-so, and some are not so great.

I especially liked the glamping gone bad story. Well written and kept my interest. And that's the beauty of multiple stories - you can read one and then put the book aside for a few days until you are ready for the next without losing your train of thought on where you are.

The Santa in training didn't thrill me. If you like paranormal, there's a story for you in the anthology.

In some, I felt that perhaps a story had come before and that I was missing something. For the most part, however, these are all individual stand-alone stories.

Recommended for cozy escapism. Several engaging stories.

What did I like about this reading?
Margaritas and Murder by Michele Pariza Wacek

One does not expect to find a dead body while on vacation and let alone to become the main suspect, yet that is what happened to Charlie after finding the body of a man she had seen arguing with another woman on the beach, the night before and not only is she the prime suspect, her passport/driving license has been taken away from her and she has no one to turn to. Alone in Mexico, all she could do is to phone her old boyfriend who happens to be a cop and wouldn’t you know it; he drops everything he is doing to reach and offer support to Charlie in Mexico…together they solve this perplexed mystery…to do with embezzlement, greed, and blackmailing which was the reason for the murder.

This book is a terrific collection of mysteries by different authors all tied together by a vacation theme. In each mini novel, the sleuths are on vacation, minding their own business, when murder rears it's ugly head. As all of our characters know, nothing kills a vacation vibe like finding a dead body.

There's a great variety to the stories. Each one is well written and is a great introduction to a series or character you've never met before. The only down side is that I now have sooooooo many more books on my TBR list!

This is a fabulous collection of cozy mysteries, and I absolutely love it! It captivated me from the very first book, and I couldn't stop reading until I reached the last page. The stories take you on a journey through small towns, beaches, exotic resorts, and even different countries. I am so grateful for the opportunity to read *Murder Doesn't Take a Vacation* and want to thank all the authors involved in this book. I definitely recommend it to all cozy mystery fans; it's worth reading and is, without a doubt, a page-turner!.

Great cozy crime!

Review of Whodunit At The Winery, a book in the cozy mystery anthology, Murder Doesn’t Take A Vacation.

I first met the character Samantha Jones in the Heywood Herbalist Cozy Mysteries. She well-drawn and believable, as is her backstory in the original series. It turns out not only was she a good actress, but she has evolved into a good mystery solver. I was so glad to see the author is continuing her mystery adventures with Jordan by her side. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

I received a complimentary ARC copy of the anthology. All opinions stated are my own.

I have read 3 of the stories so far. Whodunit at The Winery by Carly Winter. I read this one first as I received this book as an advance review copy for it. I loved this one. Sam is one of my favourite characters and so glad she is back. I also read Margaritas and Murder by Michele Pariza Wacek because I love her Charlie series. This one was amazing. Then I have read Plot Todd-EE! I haven't read her books before but really loved this one and look forward to reading more of her books. I plan to read the rest of the stories in the anthology right away.

A great collection of cozy mysteries novellas written by different authors, including a couple of my favorites. The common theme is travel, thus you are transported to many different places as you enjoy the stories. My favorite was written by Carly Winter as I have read her previous works staring Sam and Jordan. This one, as her others, is easily read as a standalone. Delightful characters and interesting plots kept me entertained throughout all the novellas.

I received a free advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I’ve only read Midnight Flowerpot Fiasco by Mona Marple. If you’ve read her Santa Claus series you’re in for a treat. And if you haven’t read it, you’ll want to! Holly and Nick are spending their honeymoon in a charming seaside town. Nick is the newest in line in the Santa family. Holly is a doctor and a solver of mysteries. I loved 💕 this short mystery.

I can’t wait to read some new authors in the rest of this book.

Who doesn't like a good quick murder with your vacation??? Each short story offers a nice creep factor, because who doesn't expect a murder with your next vacation???

Not me, but what sleuthing fun as long as it's not you on the murderer's list!!!! I kept telling myself one more story until I finished the book. It was a great get away and I couldn't put it down. Happy reading. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.

This is fantastic. So many wonderful Anthology by 11 authors and they are all excellent murder mysteries. So this presents you with a great deal.

So many different adventures and if You don't like something (unlikely) you will find something else to gather your attention. I enjoyed all of them, and can't say at this moment which I like best.

A very good anthology with several authors, two of my favorite - Pattie Larsen and Michele Pariza Wacek. Great mysteries set in crazy awesome vacation settings. Everything and the dog is in this book. If you like books set in amazing places, this will be a good for you. I never get to travel so when I read books like this, I really enjoy them and learning about these places.
