Soldiers to Heirs
Book 1: The Unexpected Duke Book 2: The New Earl's Convenient Wife
Julia Justiss grew up breathing the scent of sea air near the colonial town of Annapolis, Maryland, a fact responsible for two of her life-long passions: sailors and history! By age twelve she was a junior tour guide for Historic Annapolis, conducting visitors on walking tours through the city that was a hotbed of revolutionary fervor. (Annapolis hosted its own tea party, dispensing with the cargo aboard the "Peggy Stewart," and was briefly capital of the United States.) She also took tourists through Annapolis's other big attraction, the United States Naval Academy. After so many years of observing future naval officers at P-rade and chapel, it seemed almost inevitable that she eventually married one.
But long before embarking on romantic adventures of her own, she read about them, transporting herself to such favorite venues as ancient Egypt, World War II submarine patrols, the Old South and, of course, Regency England. Soon she was keeping notebooks for jotting down story ideas. From plotting adventures for her first favorite heroine Nancy Drew she went on to write poetry in high school and college, then worked as a business journalist doing speeches, sales promotion material and newsletter articles. After her marriage to a naval lieutenant took her overseas, she wrote the newsletter for the American Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia and traveled extensively throughout Europe. Before leaving Tunis, she fulfilled her first goal: completing a Regency novel.
Children intervened, and not until her husband left the Navy to return to his Texas homeland did she sit down to pen a second novel. The reply to her fan mail letter to a Regency author led her to Romance Writers of America. From the very first meeting, she knew she'd found a home among fellow writers--doubtless the largest group of people outside a mental institution who talk back to the voices in their heads.
Her second goal was achieved the day before her birthday in May, 1998 when Margaret Marbury of Harlequin Historicals offered to buy that second book, the Golden-Heart-Award winning novel that became THE WEDDING GAMBLE. Since then, she has gone on to write fourteen novels, three novellas and an on-line serial, along the way winning or finalling for historical awards from The Golden Quill, the National Reader’s Choice, Romantic Times, and All About Romance’s Favorite Book of the Year.
Julia now inhabits an English Georgian-style house she and her husband built in the East Texas countryside where, if she closes her eyes and ignores the summer thermometer, she can almost imagine she inhabits the landscape of "Pride and Prejudice." In between travelling to visit her three children (a naval officer son stationed in Washington, DC, a textiles and design major daughter who cheers for University of Texas at Austin, and a mechanical engineering major son also at UT Austin) keeping up with her science teacher husband and juggling a part-time day job as a high school French teacher, she pursues her first and dearest love--crafting stories.
To relax, she enjoys watching movies, reading (historical fiction, mystery, suspense) and puttering about in the garden trying to kill off more weeds than flowers.
Julia Justiss writes a solid book. I knew I would enjoy this one going in because it has several things I love: a marriage of convenience, a Napoleonic War hero, and Bad Regency Parents. But I ended up loving the quiet, emotional writing Julia gave us in The New Earl's Convenient Wife even more than I expected.
Rafe Tynesley was never supposed to become the Earl of Thornthwaite. His older brother, Ian, was meant to inherit, and Rafe joined the army to fight Napoleon after the heartbreak of losing his first and only love. But when Ian dies, he leaves behind an estate in chaos and a fiancée he never married.
Rafe and Juliana Waverton have known each other their entire lives. She is the daughter of a baron on a neighboring estate, and her older sister was always destined to marry Ian. But when her sister makes a more advantageous marriage during her Season in London, Juliana takes her place.
This wasn't a problem for Juliana. She had never been interested in traditionally feminine pursuits. Instead, she preferred being out in nature, sketching wildlife and experiencing all the natural world had to offer. When Rafe returns home, Juliana is relieved to see him—but also in agony because she's been in love with him for most of her life. She only agreed to marry Ian because she couldn't have Rafe, and now that Rafe is home, she might finally have the man she loves. But would loving him be enough if he didn't reciprocate?
I am trash—trash, I tell you—for a book with a Napoleonic War veteran as a main character. I don't know what's wrong with me, but I am absolute garbage for a man who fought with Wellington. Rafe went off to war after his first love ended with her marrying a titled man instead of him, a second son. That experience, more than the war, shaped what he wants from a wife, and he believes friendship is the foundation of a marriage, not romance.
Friends, this man is an idiot.
He's clearly been in love with Juliana since they were kids but is so damn stupid that he thinks it's normal to want to jump the wife who is "just a friend" and rip off her clothes at every opportunity.
Juliana is exactly my brand of Regency romance heroine. She has unconventional interests and has dealt with the consequences of those interests her entire life. Her mother is absolutely terrible, constantly berating her daughter for having different pursuits and for not conforming to her ideal of femininity. I loved watching Juliana blossom with Rafe because he supported and encouraged her interests.
Friends-to-lovers is often a hard sell for me because there usually isn't something compelling keeping the main characters apart. Here, though, our characters enter into a marriage of convenience while standing in radically different emotional places. Juliana has been in love with Rafe for as long as she can remember, while Rafe is too dumb to realize what's going on. It makes for an interesting dynamic because Juliana has to hide the true depth of her feelings to protect herself, so she goes out of her way to be the friend Rafe expects. I loved watching her navigate that dynamic while Rafe continued being a dummy.
This was great. I had a great time and couldn't put the book down. 5 stars.
Lieutenant Rafael Tynesly has sold his commission and returned home after the death of his brother. He is now the new Earl of Thornthwaite. Meeting his dearest friend, Juliana Waverton, brings back wonderful memories of several years ago. Originally his brother's betrothed, Rafe is in need of a wife and asks for her hand in marriage. He had his heart broken by a lady who married another, so he joined the army. He tells Juliana he's not looking for a great love, only friendship and companionship. It's too late for Juliana, she's loved him for a long time. A lot of descriptive sex and heartache. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book gifted by the author.
I do love Regency romances. They are just the most comforting stories with almost guarantied happy ever after endings. This one is the second in the Soldiers to Heirs trilogy, where young men who were second sons or cousins to the holder of a noble title went off to be soldiers and were called back because the titleholder died without a son. In this book, Rafe was busy helping to defeat Napoleon. He was a second son and did not expect his older brother to die from a cold. But that happened, and he came home to take up the title of Earl of Thornthwaite. At his brother's gravesite, Rafe meets Juliana Waverton, a neighbor girl who grew up playing with him. Her family also has a title, so it was natural that she and Rafe's brother were engaged. They were not married when he died, so she was not a widow but again a single woman, a little older than other young women seeking husbands. Juliana was also disadvantaged in the Marriage Mart because she was not a conventual girl. She was more interested in studying and drawing the natural world than she was in dresses and manners. When he was younger, Rafe had developed what he thought was a Grand Passion for another woman. That woman married a Lord instead of Rafe, causing him great heartache. He swore that if he married, he would not marry for love but instead, for friendship. Now that the playing field is prepared, the story can begin. Yes, Rafe and Juliana marry. Juliana has loved Rafe since childhood, so she has to watch her behavior. She doesn't want Rafe to be disappointed because she goes beyond friendship, although she does feel friendly towards Rafe. Because Rafe is now a Lord, he has to run the estate. The old estate manager had retired, and his replacement was more a thief than a manager. The estate was in bad shape. Also, Rafe had to spend part of every year in London as a member of Parliament. Going to London meant Rafe probably would meet the woman he loved and lost. Juliana would have just as easily stayed in the country. I could go on, but then you would have no reason to read this book. I kind of think you would enjoy it. It is a charming story, and I think we can use some charming right now.
The New Earl's Convenient Wife is the second in the Soldiers to Heirs series but can be read as a stand alone story, however I suggest also reading The Unexpected Duke for the pure entertainment of the series. As a youth, Rafe Tynesley suffers a broken heart when the young lady he loves announces that she is to marry another and Rafe joins the military. When his brother unexpectedly dies, he is called home to assume the title and estates only to discover that the estate is in shambles and in dire finances. Juliana was always disparaged by her mother for her actions of sketching wildlife and not presenting any ladylike qualities but her neighbor Rafe helped her with her adventures. She fell in love with him then but when she discovered he was in love with another, she agreed to marry his brother. Since she never married his brother, Rafe offers a marriage of convenience only to learn the passionate nature of his bride as a friend, lover and partner in reviving the estate which she reluctantly agrees to. This is a wonderful story of secret love, finding your way in a new chapter of life and discovering the love that has always been right there. The characters are wonderfully flawed, realistically relatable and so engaging that you feel a part of the story.
I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher but all thoughts and feelings are my own.
The New Earl’s Convenient Wife by Julia Justiss is book two in the Soldiers to Heirs series. I was looking forward to this book after reading The Unexpected Duke. But I was very disappointed in this story. At times it felt more like a book on animal husbandry, silviculture and bibliology of the 1800s. I slipped into mental torpor, while the hero Rafe and the heroine Juliana rode around the estate discussing the art of pollarding and the need to expand their herd of sheep. I felt torn between scenes with steamy interludes and boring British Museum tours. There was very little tension and basically no villain except Rafe’s own thoughts and judgments. Even the introduction of an old lover didn’t raise the stakes. I wasn’t necessarily concerned for the couple. I wish that Justiss had included more descriptions of Juliana through Rafe’s eyes. Perhaps she could have shown a love growing there instead of just all out lust. I really didn’t care if they found a happy ending. Overall, this book was not my cup of tea which is disappointing because I normally enjoy Justiss’s work.

Another beautifully written romance from the author, the characters have wonderful depth & I was drawn in from the first page & left with a smile at the end. I loved both Rafe & Juliana & just loved their journey to a HEA. They were perfect for each other & brought out the best in each other. She helped him settling into the role of an Earl & he gave her confidence. A captivating romance which I loved I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
I’ll start off by saying that really had high hopes for this one because marriage of convenience is one of my favorite tropes….but sadly this one fell flat 😢
Rafe was an absolute idiot who didn’t know Juliana had actual romantic feelings for him some time into their marriage.
Julianna went all out in their smexy times. I would’ve liked less of those times and more romantic scenes.
And what really made me give it 2 stars is that after some time into his marriage his first love comes back and suggests an affair and he has the gall to say that he was tempted to having one. 😳😮😵💫 And then he even tells Juliana this and she doesn’t even bat an eye. What do you fucking mean that you were tempted?!?!? After months of being married and years of not seeing her he wanted to give up his marriage for that skank. So pissed 😠 at Julianna too for not even addressing him being tempted.
Also in editing: There were times that Rafe was referred to as Hart.

Julia Justiss has once again delivered a truly unforgettable story with The New Earl’s Convenient Wife. Her characters are so thoughtfully crafted that they linger in your mind long after the last page is turned. The romance between the two main characters grows in a natural, heartfelt way, set against a beautifully vivid backdrop that enhances every moment of their journey.
The setting is not just scenery—it perfectly frames the blossoming love at the heart of the story, enriching the emotional depth and charm of the narrative. Justiss’s writing captures the essence of a timeless romance, creating a story that is both engaging and deeply moving.
The happy ending is everything you could wish for, the perfect conclusion to a love story that feels both satisfying and memorable. A must-read for fans of historical romance.
Marriage of Convenience. Due to the death of his brother, Rafe suddenly finds himself an Earl. Having spent all his adult life as a soldier, he leans heavily on the knowledge of his childhood friend and brother’s former fiancée Juliana, to restore the Estate which has been rundown by a nefarious steward. Rafe proposes marriage to his old friend and Juliana (who has been in love with him for years) reluctantly accepts. Can she survive a loveless marriage, particularly when his old flame appears on the scene? Loved the blossoming of Juliana away from her family and the relationship between the couple. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I found this story to be truly entertaining. A story of secret love, unexpected expectations, and friendship. Juliana had agreed to marry an earl, Ian, but lost him before they could wed. She had a love for painting and sketching, not the usual pastimes for a lady, and knew well how to manage an household. When the new earl, Rafe, arrives, she faced her childhood friend and helped him get control of his estate. Due to his new rank in society, he wanted to protect himself so offered Juliana a choice. As their feelings for each other become more apparent, they had to make choices. I loved the support from secondary characters and loved that both Juliana and Rafe come to the realization at the same time. This was a wonderful story.
I received an ARC, and this is my unsolicited review.
Returning from battle is never easy, but when Rafe discovers the mess his brother has left for him to clean up, he is only too grateful to discover his brother's betrothed and his childhood friend is on site to give him the answers he so desperately needs. Rafe has previously been burned by love and vows never to give his heart again, but when he discovers that he needs Juliana in every facet of his life, he has to rethink his stance. Juliana has long held a torch for Rafe, and she is reluctant to enter into a marriage of convenience with him. When they come face to face with Rafe's past, she regrets her decision. Fortunately, Rafe has a wise friend who helps him face the truth. The novel, a copy of which I received as a gift, comes to a sweet conclusion.
When Rafe arrives back home to take over the title left due to his brother’s unexpected death he reunites with his childhood friend Mouse. She alerts him to the complications involving both the estate and the reasons she and his brother never married as was the arrangement in place six years ago. As they together resolve all the problems and misunderstandings they eventually find their hea after overcoming the obstacles.
The story is well written. The MMC has been a soldier for years but now is an Earl upon the death of his brother. With the help of his late brother’s fiancée (who was also his childhood friend), he becomes more comfortable in his role. She faces spinsterhood so he proposes a marriage of convenience. This leads to a slow burn romance. It was an enjoyable read.
Great book! Loved the characters and how the story develops between Rafe Tynesley and Juliana Waverton. They've already known each other for years. Rafe has to come home because his brother has died, and he is now the Earl. I love historical romance and this book is one of the reasons why I love the Harlequin books.
Great installment in the series! I loved Juliana and Rafe. Their characters are so well written. I am so very glad to get their story. I related a lot to Juliana very quickly and loved how she blossomed and helped Rafe grow as an earl as well.
Loved It! What an amazing read! I felt pulled into this story... Juliana touched a cord in me and I really wanted to see everything work out for her and Rafe. Loved every moment between these two! A book and characters that will not be forgotten!
Julia Justiss delivers another entry in her Soldiers to Heirs series with The New Earl’s Convenient Wife.
A classic Regency romance that hits all the right notes for fans of marriages of convenience and uniformed heroes.
Set in the 1830s, it follows soldier Rafe Tynesley, who is thrust into the role of earl after his brother’s unexpected death. Struggling to adapt to aristocratic life, Rafe turns to Juliana Waverton, his late brother’s longtime betrothed for guidance.
Facing spinsterhood after years of waiting, Juliana finds herself in a precarious position until Rafe proposes a practical marriage to secure his title and repay her kindness.
Juliana’s long hidden love for Rafe adds a bittersweet layer to their arrangement. Rafe, scarred by war and determined to avoid the vulnerabilities of love, brings that brooding military intensity that the author writes so well. Their chemistry builds slowly, with sparks flying as convenience gives way to genuine passion.
Juliana is no wilting wallflower, she’s resourceful and resilient, while Rafe’s internal conflict over duty versus desire had me rolling my eyes (you know your going to fall for her eventually 😜)
If you’ve enjoyed her previous works (like the The Earl’s Inconvenient Wife or the first book in this series, The Unexpected Duke), you’ll appreciate the familiar blend of tender emotion, light angst, and steamy tension.
This is perfect for curling up with on a winter evening, especially if you’re craving escapist historical romance with heart.
Highly recommended for anyone who loves a soldier finding his way home… to love. 🥰
