Really a "perfect" book about Oracle wait event tuning, with detailed explanations! The best reference you can find, and a must reading for every Oracle Database Administrator.

This is a slightly dated book but still valuable for performance troubleshooting. It mainly cover the Wait State interface framework. Watching for excessive wait events or wait classes is the modern method to narrow down what is the cause of slowness. Previously this analysis would have been done with various ratios. The authors have valuable descriptions of common wait states and what an Ops engineer should do next if anything.

The final section covers what has become the best tools in the database for performance — AWR/ASH/ADDM

Even though the book is dated, especially the pre 10G items, the research put into this book remains useful for performance engineering.
