Kirsten was abandoned by her African American father and German mother at six-years-old and she survived a very devastating childhood. She found strength and courage through reading and writing and she graduated from school, got married and raised four wonderful children. She also cared for several children that were abandoned by their parents and by society, (a few were literally left on her doorstep.) She fed and clothed them and sent them to school and taught them to be upstanding, decent members of society.

Kirsten wrote Blood Master several years ago and it developed into The G.O.D.s Series, a series of books that deal with Griffin Storm, a hero with feet of clay, a hero that saves the lives of several people, but most importantly, he saves hundreds of children from abandonment and neglect; takes them to a better life, (something of which Kirsten always wished for when she was a child.)

Her short story, “Dark Matters”, was published in Bewildering Stories and a character from the G.O.D.s Series made a special appearance in the story. Said character appears in the second book of the G.O.D.s Series, “Blood Storm”.

As a side note, Ladybug Press published her chapbook, “Poetry from the Covert Bourgeoisie,” in 2006 and her chapbook, “The Abandoning Kind,” was published by Pudding House Publications in 2009. She lives in Brewster, NY. , with her daughters and her five unbelievably beautiful grandchildren!

The story begins with Griffin, the only albino still alive, saving Tassta before she inadvertently gets caught by Guild Faction members. After they part ways, he runs into Tassta's twin brother, Penn, who knocks him out with a rock and takes him back to their Uncle at the Brotherhood Fortress. Griffin has special powers - and there is also a legend about an albino saving them all from the Guild. Griffin wants to go back home to the Underground, where he he lives with his best friend, his best friend's daughter, and lots of children (who need him), but he also wants to stay with Tassta (who he is falling for) and Penn (who he is becoming friends with).

This is a really cool dystopian story. There is adventure and very interesting characters and a storyline that is different and fun. The characters were well written and the physical descriptions are well done and helpful, making it easy to see the person in your mind's eye. Same with the physical descriptions of the settings. A lot of authors fall flat on this, but Kirsten does a really good job.

Sometimes I think that authors are so intent on writing a good story that they miss out on the bigger picture (which is where a good editor comes in handy). You (this is where I say "you, but not YOU" - in this case, YOU are one of the yous I'm talking to) are telling me a story about characters that you want me to relate to, become close to, bond with ... with an adventure (or mystery, or horror, or relationship...) that you want me to understand and become a part of ... and yet there are things that some of you do that make this problematic and sometimes even impossible. Let me use an example from this particular book: At the beginning of the book, there is a page of name pronunciations (very cool). Throughout the book, people are referred to by both names, while others are referred to by one. Uncle Lerin goes back and forth between that and Lerin Sanctobus, his full name being unnecessary after the first time. If you have to keep reminding me of who they are - and refuse to allow us to become (and remain on) a first name basis with your characters - how am I supposed to feel that I know them, that I am there with them throughout the story? Personally, I find it awkward and think it takes away from the flow of the story. (Another issue I had, which may have just been a personal thing with me, was the fact that things were repetitive, mentioned several times in different ways in the span of a few paragraphs i.e. we know that the bag holds a surprise Penn brought back from the raid. It doesn't have to be reiterated or defined every time. We get it and this takes away from the flow of the story as well.)

Despite that, I enjoyed reading this very much and can't wait to read more from this author.

Favorite character: Griffin. He is intense and interesting and different. I want to know more about him. I also like Penn.

Least favorite character: Tassta. Which is unfortunate. I like her in the beginning of the story, but was completely turned off of her after she and Griffin spoke in his room for the first time. She had been so interested in learning more about him, had all these questions for him, but when she had the opportunity to ask them, she didn't - and, even worse, she made him think she was uninterested when he was telling her more about himself and where he lived. She also wanted to be so mature and independent - and at times she was - but sometimes really failed at being either.

Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. No other consideration was offered, expected or received.

Bell, Book & Candle | Blood Master Review & Spotlight

Man, this book was long! I wasn't too sure if I would be able to finish it within the next decade! I'm just kidding, everyone. I'm not complaining or anything, but the last time I read a 500 page book I think it was Harry Potter. Anyways, I was surprised by how much I liked the story. I only say that because the first half was a bit slow pacing-wise, but it picked up and became increasingly fascinating in the second half. I just hope that there's some serious action or a big showdown in book two; that was all that was missing.

Assuming Griffin is indeed the protagonist of the series, he was likable. It's great to see how much he cared about others - I.e. The children. It's weird how he's an albino who's physically described as "handsome" or "gorgeous". I'm not judging but those have never been the descriptive words of albino people that I've heard; maybe that's because I have yet to meet an albino person. I'm not going to lie, when he said he was born on the day of the supposed Apocalypse, 12- 21- 2012, I was like "you know it's about to be some bullsh*t"!

Griffin has got a "thing going on" with Mrs Jones - I mean Tassta, an aspiring guardian of the brotherhood. This girl is 17 in most of the book and Griffin is 40 - apparently Tassta prefers her wine "aged" (get it? Lol). I thought at first she was going to be the main character but she wasn't; she was more secondary in more ways than one.

"...It's just that I noticed how you looked at him, Tassta. I know you like light meat." - Penn

Penn is the best character, in my humble opinion. Seriously- this guy had me busting a gut. His comedic timing is priceless. Penn is Tassta's older brother and eventually becomes Griffin's best friend. I honestly enjoyed his bromance with Griffin more than the romance between Tassta and Griffin.

"Hah, I knew it! You come to the old Pennster for advice. Well, let me tell you exactly what you need to do," Penn said and smiled gregariously. He brushed his hands through his hair and then said, "You walk in and see who's available-and then you give them the eye," Penn said, his eyebrows rising then lowering quickly. He smiled his devilishly debonair smile and winked.

Fascinating story, this is. I'm not going to lie I was bored at first, but if you stick to it the story becomes really interesting! I'm still trying to figure out just what Griffin is - Antichrist? Nephilim? The world may never know...

An interesting take on a dystopian world that drew me in from the first chapter. The main characters are fleshed out so well that we follow their exploits with great interest. The details we are given about their lives, their thoughts, and their feelings make them real for the reader, and that's exactly what I look for in a book.
The story itself is complicated but intriguing, keeping me glued to the pages to find out what happens next. I won't give anything away, but let's just say that I am rooting for the albino! If Book Two is half as good as this one, it will be a wonderful adventure indeed.

Blood Master is considered an Urban Paranormal Fantasy novel set in the year 2025. This is not the typical genre I read so it is new to me. The story line was enticing and I was memorized by the relationship between Griffin and Tassta. I could feel the love brewing between them, and was happy they shared mutual feelings for each other even after Griffin's transformation. I was a little out of my element with the scientific explanations of how Griffin came to be and how his powers worked, but I am sure this is how this genre is written.

Griffin is an albino, the only one left in the world after the Great War. He survived the Clover Virus and the Death Plague that killed all the other albinos and the experiments performed on him by the Guild Faction. He is foraging for supplies when he runs across the most beautiful girl he has ever seen. He felt the need to protect her and in doing so sealed his fate. Little did he know at the time, but he was setting the scene to fulfill the prophecy of the Brotherhood. Griffin appeared in the Master Scrolls as the chosen one who would save the Brotherhood from the evil Guild Faction. Only he didn't look like the beautifully handsome young man standing before Tassta. In the Master Scrolls he was a beastly monster with fangs. Most people truly believe this prophesy would come true, even if all others had. It was too far fetched to believe. Plus no one had ever seen a real albino before.

Eventually, Griffin finds a home with the Brotherhood, but is forced to keep his albinism a secret by wearing a hood and gloves when in public. Only a few people shared the secret, one of them being his love, Tassta. She and Griffin go about the business of falling in love while maintaining their duties at the fortress. Griffin informs Lerin, the leader of the Brotherhood about the plight of orphan children he helped in the Underground before coming to the Brotherhood. Lerin agrees to help the children with supplies and eventually moving them to the fortress so they can have a better life.

Thru their journey, Tassta becomes the first female Guardian of the Brotherhood and Griffin earns his guardianship too. The toughest part of the book comes during Griffin's transformation into a G.O.D. (Genetically-enhanced Omni Dimensionals) a creature who can manipulate objects in different dimensions. His change is scary and painful and not very pleasant for anyone involved.

The author provides vivid descriptions of the Brotherhood's fortress and the Underground haven. Being familiar with present day Atlanta, I knew the layout of the cityscape she writes about. I could visualize the Underground Atlanta being destroyed by earth quakes and hundreds of homeless orphans trying to survive down there.

A refreshing and fascinating book. I liked that Tassta and Griffin had a romance but that it didn’t overwhelm the story. It was in the background and built over time. The book starts off slowly as we learn the different for lack of a better word factions and the main characters. Penn is awesome. He’s so loyal and protective but he also brings a lightness to the story. Lerin is interesting he is the only elderly character but he’s also wise and contemplative. He has compassion and a good leader. Dean a little wary of. He is kind but you have to wonder as a scientist if he will betray Griffin unconsciously in any way. Sylmar something is wrong with him but he’s hiding it from Griffin so he doesn’t worry. He’s a compassionate leader who deserves a better life. Assay is a enigma really. She shows strength and yet is weak. Stubbornness and yet vulnerable and at times she can be frustrating. She loves Griffin and shows unwavering support to Griffin. Griffin is really this books focus. He is the key to everything. He’s kind and compassionate but also if he chooses very very dangerous. He sacrifices to help children and finds joy in doing this and being near them. Griffin is the blood master and this book deals with his acceptance of that and his transformation. It’s the transformation that is startling. He becomes something ethereal and angelic but also deadly. He must learn control of his lusts and abilities in order to stay who he is and also not cause harm.

The characters are all unique and well developed in the book. The writing is descriptive and creates a world of danger, hope, love, joy and at times frustration. A creative and fascinating world was created in which one character determines the fate of many and his transformation is truly unique and a mystery as to what he has become and if he can learn to control what he needs. This book nicely looks at his life blending in finding a home, love and his transformation. A fascinating and interesting story that will have you wondering what is next and looking forward to seeing if Griffin learns control and what else he can do.

In reading this well written book, I was transported to a post-apocalyptic world...one which I'd never allowed myself to visit before , and yet somehow familiar. The compelling character of Griffin kept me seeking to understand more and more about his mission...about the missions of all involved...to create a better world. The gifts and talents of each of the characters, along with their developing personalities, kept me interested throughout. I look forward to reading more and more of Kirsten Campbell's The G.O.D. Series. Keep writing, Ms. Campbell. I know your book flowed from beyond the veil, and look forward to knowing more and more about what it reveals!

I loved this book!
The story started slowly setting the scene and filling in some background, but soon shifted up a gear with some great action and a number of surprising twists.
The characters were well-developed and, for the most part, likable.
The romance between Tassta and Griffin was tasteful and didn't overwhelm the story.
The author has created a fascinating and realistic world of the future, with vivid descriptions of the Brotherhood's fortress and the Underground.

I can't wait to see what happens next for Griffin and all.

This book will catch you right out of the starting gate! We meet Tassta and Griffin right off the bat and we see the chemistry which just gets better throughout the book!!!
Get ready for action, adventure, romance and suspense!!! The characters are likeable but there is a darkness to the story that makes the reader wonder what is next! I recommend Blood Master to fantasy fans everywhere.

Blood Master: Book 1 of The G.O.D.s Series by Kirsten Campbell is set in 2052 when 2/3 of the world’s population has been wiped out by the Great War, the Clover Virus and the Death Plague. The only person to have survived the plague and the only living albino left is Griffin, who begins his story in hiding from the Guild Faction but ends up living at the Brotherhood Fortress after rescuing Tassata from the Guild. The Guild believes Griffin will transform into a G.O.D., a Genetically-enhanced Omni-Dimensional being and are currently tracking him. But is all as it seems?

I want to jump in immediately to rave about Campbell and her writing style. What an imagination this woman must have! She has created this whole, fascinating world which is hard to do, especially in a book of 449 pages. Yet, she manages to draw the reader in with her simple yet descriptive language. Naturally, in a genre of this kind, there is some scientific language at play, whether real or make-believe. This book has a lot of it but it didn’t go over my head. I felt like I understood the explanations without really having to try.

The book has some strong characters but most certainly it is Griffin and Tassata who lead the way. I admired Tassata more as she was a strong female character, the first female in the Brotherhood on her way to becoming a Guardian. I also liked the relationship between Griffin and Tassata, although I must say it did become cheesy at times. Lerin, grandfather to Tassata and leader of the Brotherhood, was also interesting. I’m looking forward to learning more about him as there was indication there are some hidden depths to him.

One issue I had with this book was that it was a bit drawn out. Some reviews I have read stated that it is the first half that drags, but for me, it was the second. I think this was because it read almost like a prequel. It was Griffin’s story about he came to be at the fortress and I feel I could have read that after at least book two (which is currently on my to-read list) or beyond.

Overall, this was a nice read and I won’t hesitate in picking up the next book. Let’s say I have to. I need to find out what happens to Griffin. Something tells me life at the fortress won’t be all plain sailing.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book totally rocked!!! I could not put it down!!! The visions and details that the author painted of the apocalyptic world were amazing!! Her research and thoughts were very well thought out.
Griffin is the only surviving albino that survived the horrendous treatments and experiments of the Guild Faction. Upon escaping, he was eventually captured by the Brotherhood. He's a creature of the Genetically Omni Dimensional(G.O.D.) with telepathic abilities. He has to learn to control his transformation. His character is also a man of love, compassion and strength. He worries about his children in the Underground.
Tassta is not only a strong, independent woman warrior but the first woman to become a Guardian. She shows not only unconditional love to her twin brother, Penn, and Uncle Lerin, but to the mysterious man, Griffin.
Penn brings lightness and humor to this story.
Uncle Lerin, Regulator of the Brotherhood,  seems to be more advanced in his theories. More knowledgeable of the Master of Scrolls than he lets on.
Dean, a scientist, at times seems very devoted to the Brotherhood but one never knows if he's a Judas.
I would recommend this book to everyone. It's an amazing story to get lost in. Now to Part 2 Blood Phase of this fabulous G.O.D. Series. I'm volunteering a review for an advance reader's copy.

In Blood Master by Kirsten Campbell, Atlanta has been completely leveled by an earthquake, rendering Underground Atlanta a refuge shelter. The displaced people who have survived the devastation of the earthquakes, the Death Plague, and the Clover Virus are forced to forage for supplies. Tassta and her brother Penn are on a raid to locate supplies for the Brotherhood Fortress, a unit of resistance against the cruel Guild Faction, when they encounter Griffin Storm. Griffin is the only known albino left, all the others having died in the Guild Faction’s experiments. As they take Griffin in (he was injured in the raid), they come to realize that he may be the one prophesized to defeat the Guild Faction. And Tassta realizes she is falling in love with him. Griffin is torn between staying at the Brotherhood Fortress with Tassta or returning to the Underground to the children in his care and his best friend, Waylene. Things become more complicated when Griffin begins to undergo a ‘transformation.’

Ms. Campbell’s ability to develop characters is incredible. She makes you want to pull the characters out of the book and talk with them. Griffin is without a doubt the single most sympathetic character I have ever encountered in a novel. He goes through all kids of hell, including a “dipping” experiment at the Guild Faction and the Death Plague. The poor guy just wants a regular life! Is that too much to ask for? And just when you think things might finally start to settle down for him, he starts to “transform.” Why, oh why, can’t he just have a normal life with the woman he loves? He has certainly earned it. The reader will root for Griffin and Tassta the whole way, and can’t help but hope things turn out well for them.

This book also has a completely satisfying ending that makes you want to read the next book, which I will get to very soon! I will never be able to go to Atlanta again without thinking of Griffin and Tassta.

BLOOD MASTER REVIEW

This is a book to take one’s time over.
The author has clearly taken a huge amount of time to bring the world of this book to life: detail abounds, there is history, legend and rumour all mixed in together in a way that seems very right for the sort of post-apocalyptic scenario her characters inhabit. Those characters themselves are carefully, lovingly drawn, with their own backgrounds, likes, dislikes and motivations – and as in our own mundane world, not all of these are immediately clear or obvious. The effect of all this, then, is something like a complex layer-cake of plots, purposes and personalities, and the result is a truly rich and satisfying read. There is detail to savour, motives to wonder at, and mysteries to unravel. Nor is even this the end of the story: Blood Master is the first in a series, and so there is more to anticipate and look forward to.
The story begins slowly, but in itself this is not a particularly bad thing. The time has been taken to set the scene, to establish some background, before the deeper themes of the story begin to make themselves evident. For all its fantastical elements and its dark, survivalist setting, this is a story about trust, in all its aspects, and about whether trust can survive the sorts of upheavals both presented and hinted at.
It is not a genre I would normally read, but I find that I am glad I did in this case. The book well rewards a bit of patience and careful reading in order to fully appreciate the depths of detail to which the author has gone, which only serve to enhance and enrich an already compelling story.

I was introduced to Blood Master in November of 2016. Between first picking up this book off Amazon and writing my review now, I have read the story twice and will fully admit that I am absolutely in love with this tale. Even though Blood Master is labeled in the dystopian, paranormal sci-fi genre, there are so many other aspects to this book. Looking for fantasy? You can find it here? How about Romance? Yes, Blood Master has that in it as well.

The universe which Kirsten Campbell brings us into is fully developed. Through her writing, she has created a sense of time and space that I, as a reader, felt as though I was walking alongside the characters with each scene that came to pass. In my mind’s eye, I could see the devastation of Underground Atlanta, the Brotherhood facility and every other area that the characters were living in.

The characters were brought to life quite amazingly. They were three dimensional, were perfect in their imperfections, and had the depth that only a talented writer could bring to them. The flow of this story was well paced, beautifully written and had a perfect balance of action, adventure, love and background.

Truth be told, I fell in love with this series and the author’s style of writing within the first two chapters of Blood Master. Thank you Kirsten from bringing the G.O.D.s series, as well as Griffin and Tassta, to life. I’m looking forward to reading Blood Phase (Book 2 of the G.O.D.s series) which I will review as soon as I finish.

Where to even start? Ah. This book has a world that I want to be apart of. I loved the details and how the author took us on a road untraveled. We never hear about a post apocalyptic world where the humans have made it better and aren’t almost all dying. It was a new twist that I LOVED! The author did a great job with that and to me that detail made the whole book.

The book to me started slow. It took awhile for me to get into it (which is ok because this book is pretty long be ready for a LONG read. Not that its a bad thing there is a lot going on). The book to me finally picked up halfway through. Up until that point I had to force myself to get there. I was starting to think I was never going to finish and then BAM! I was done and begging for the second one.

I enjoyed most of the characters. They were all well developed but Tassta ended up getting on my nerves more than anything else. She started out great and I thought I’d love her, but I found myself turning from that. Penn and Griffin were my favorites. They stood out more to me. Griffin because DUH main character and Penn brought a lightness to the story. All in all the characters were amazing and very easy to connect with.

I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I do wonder where this will go and where the characters will all end up.

Blood Master: Book 1 of The G.O.D.s Series
By Kirsten Cambell

** Proficies and Power **

The last time I was this hooked on a book I was reading the Harry Potter series! Now that being said Blood Master is no children's fantasy book. It is a thrilling futuristic take on a post apocalyptic world. 2052: Two-thirds of the human population have been killed by the Great War, the Clover Virus and the Death Plague.
When Tessta Vinetti goes on a raid she is saved by an unexpected hero, she isn't sure who he is at first...
Griffin is the only known survivor of the Death Plague and he happens to be albino, the chosen one..? Maybe but this is much more than just a few profetic scribbles in the book of scribes... this is a world that pulls you in, character that make you laugh and sometimes give them a good whopping.
Mystery, Telepathy, fantastic fantasy and thrilling adventures. There is love, joy, hope and action. This book really has it all.
Tessta and Griffin's story envelopes you and pulls you in deeper in this first installment to the G.O.D series.
Kirsten Cambell has an astonishing writing style and I can't get enough.
Apocalypse has never been this fantastic!
I'm hooked and cannot wait to read the next book in this thrilling series!
5 amazing stars!

I enjoyed this book. It was well written and the characters were well developed. The author transports you to an underground Atlanta. It was vividly written where you could easily imagine the world. I liked Tassta one of the main characters. She was likeable and realistic. Griffin is another main character was is likeable but significantly older. My favorite character was Penn. He had me giggling quite a bit. Overall I will be interested in how this series will continue. This is the first book I have read from this author and it definitely won't be my last. It was beautifully written.

This story starts out a little slow, but it does pick up the pace and becomes intriguing the further into the book you get. The only thing missing is the action, yet there is a buildup of anticipation for a huge showdown that hopefully will appear in book 2.

I fell in love with Griffin's character, with his innocent demeanor and mysterious background. The more I learned about Griffin, the closer I felt to him. His background and the things he is still learning about himself gives you a glimpse of the Hell and torture that he had to have endured in his past.

A beautiful story

The best story I have read in 2016. YA novels seem to be my favorite reads and happily admitted guilty pleasure, because of the innocence mixed with danger, impending adulthood, and first love in an environment detrimental to all the above. All the requirements of a beautiful story. Now, can I get part two please????

I will start by saying don't give up once you start this book. I had a bit of difficulty getting involved. I like a book that sucks you in quickly and this one didn't do that. Ms. Campbell, lays out her story slowly, but once the action takes off you will be transported. It's an action filled post dystopian adventure, with a bit of romance, jealousy, and friction between the factions.

We are introduced to Tassta, she is a young woman trying to find her place in the new world and make her mark. She wants to be a Guardian of the Brotherhood, the first female member. She has been promised a place once she accomplishes a few more missions. On a mission she is almost found by the Guild. She is kept safe by a mysterious albino. Much to her surprise he is able to talk to her telekinetically. Griffin Storm is the mysterious young man, they are both attracted to one another but he quickly disappears once he knows that Tassta is safe. This all changes upon returning to their fortress and finding that her brother has captured him. Thinking perhaps he is the savior of mankind as foreseen in a professi.

Ms. Campell's characters are well developed, her writing will pull you into her world that is fraught with danger, learning to love, happiness and angst. She has created a world that is both unique and spellbinding. You will fall in love with Griffin and hope he can find all he needs in this new world that may or may not accept him, make him their own and appreciate his gifts as well as what he may do to protect the future.

If you are in the market for an intriguing YA - Dystopian adventure - I highly recommend this one.
