Multiple death threats, and the discovery of hidden notes. Yet, Detective Smith is sent into a barrel of confusion.Murder strikes the once peaceful home of Sylvia, and with it comes revelations and deeply buried secrets, woven like an artistic tapestry laced with anger, greed, jealousy, sex and a thirst for blood. A journey is started, but perhaps, one that has already begun watching before consciousness arrived.
The killer is well within view, watching keenly for the opportunity to strike, playing his cards well even if it seems like nothing is going to fall into their laps.
Until it does.
dice has been cast, but there is no guarantee who is going to win this round.
This was book 1 in the Detective Lucas series. This is a murder mystery police series. This book was pretty short at only 117 pages so it made for a quick easy read.
One question - why is his name Lucas Lucas?? I thought it must be a typo the first time I saw it but it was there again as Detective Lucas Lucas in chapter 2. Other than the name being very strange my only other complaint about the book is the use of the word sauntered. It was used multiple times in reference to how Sylvia walked. She just lost her boyfriend of three years and yet the word sauntered was used to describe her walking style. Usually meaning a leisurely stroll or walking in a slow relaxed manner, this description seems out of place with the depiction of her mental and physical well being since the death of her boyfriend.
I did wonder about the guy in the kitchen in chapter 2 that was looking through the kitchen cabinet for the glass jug with the rose in it. That whole scene seems out of place as it is never mentioned again and I have no idea what the point of the interaction was!
I did figure out who the killer was but only once Gracey went to the soccer field so it did take me a while. I was surprised by the illness angle - definitely not something I was expecting so I did enjoy being surprised.
The Subversion: A Scintillating Thriller (Detective Lucas Smith Series Book 1), my fourth enjoyable read from author Flynn Cooley. I read a lot of books, 84 so far in 2025, somethin about this book grabbed me and I read it in ine sitting. Mavbe Cooley's best book so far. “I received a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author with The Unseen Hand: Unseen Truths, Deadly Consequences (Detective Lucas Smith Series) next on my TBR list. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018.
This quick read has many things going for it like murder and greed plus lots of twists in the plot that will keep you wondering when the next shoe will drop. Sylvia faces dangerous situations after the death of her boyfriend, but it's the ending of this story that's a real killer. If intense suspense is what your looking for give this one a try I think it's a good one.
This is the first book I have read by Flynn Cooley, and I must say it will not be my last! Wonderful characters, lots of plot twists and turns, and a very original storyline. Loved it, loved it, loved it so much I will definitely read this book again!!
Even though this book was free through Book Funnel, this is an unbiased review.
Sylvia is taken on a horrific journey when murder strikes and secrets revealed. Detective Smith has his hands full with all the deaths taking place and trying to find the killer in a race against time in this edge of the seat finish in this intriguing read.
I really liked this thriller story. Had me trying to guess what was really going on and who the bad guy could be and why. Enjoyed the characters and the surprises. A good mix of thriller, mystery and suspense at times.
