Take a trip into my garden, I've got so much to show ya / The fountains and the waters, are begging just to know ya / And it's true, baby, I've been saving this for you, baby (Bloom – Troye Sivan).

Hm, this was an interesting book. But before we get to all of that, I think it’s time for me to share some of my unpopular opinions! This won’t take long, don’t worry. Firstly, I don’t actually mind the Goodreads logo change. Sorry, but if the “g” over there wants to have a little “Pixar’s Lamp” moment, then that's cool! Sure, it would have been nice if they actually updated the site so that the people you’ve blocked don’t still show up on your feed for some dumbass reason, but you know… it’s whatever. Second, I can’t stand cheese filled pizza crusts! It’s already a miracle that I’m only a tiny bit lactose intolerant given that I'm both Native American and Asian, so it’s not like I’m trying to test things too much by going hard on the cheese. And finally, regardless if a story is “elevated erotica” or not, in my humble opinion there should be a certain level of bluntness to the writing style in order for there to be clarity of purpose. Don’t get me wrong, His Princely Devotion is a pretty book full of pretty words, but I just don’t think abstract language in a book that effectively amounts to several sequences of sex scenes works as well as you might imagine. Yeah, this book has the emphasis on beautiful language and heightened emotions on lock down, but I have to admit that it took me a while to even understand what was going on, and by the time I was finally getting used to the mechanics of this fantasy world… the book was over. And now I’m writing this review questioning where I stand. Okay, so let me try to talk through it, that way maybe by the end of this paragraph I’ll have an epiphany! His Princely Devotion is a story about the smitten Prince of Flowers named Eden desperately trying to get some kind of reaction out of his loyal yet stoic bodyguard, Gale. What starts as simple flirtation quickly turns into a sexually charged game of cat-and-mouse where no matter the loser, everybody comes out on top. “So baby, let's get freaky, get kinky. Let's make this bed get squeaky!” Overindulgent prose aside, there was one outlier on the first page, and maybe this is just me, but I don’t think the term “hot as fuck” should be used in a fantasy setting unless someone is getting set on fire by a dragon. I mean, obviously nobody here is expecting J.R.R Tolkien levels of linguistics, but I just think that there are certain rules that you shouldn’t break, and I take -2 poison damage whenever I come across overly modern language in fantasy! -2 ugh, -2 ugh! But outside of that one instance I thought this book’s writing was quite lovely, even if it did take me a minute to discern when the prose was being overly flowery (heh heh the main character is the Prince of Flowers) for the sake of it or if they were speaking literally. At first I thought the constant use of the word “flower” in regards to Eden was used as a substitute for his butthole! You know, like how some dudes name their penis? So I figured that the author was trying to find a fun new way of describing how Gale was about to eat the booty like groceries! Nonetheless, using flowers as sexual imagery? Georgia O’Keeffe would be proud! So yeah, even though I didn’t really know what Eden or Gale were saying for most of the story, I guess it's okay because the intent came across perfectly. You could say they were speaking in tongues.

Otherwise, it was nice how there weren’t too many characters to keep track of in the story because… let’s face it, fantasy novels definitely have had a track record in the past of getting a little bloated every now and then with their cast lists. You just know we'd be scrolling the IMDB page forever! But nah, not here with His Princely Devotion, this time around it’s just a tight story clocking in at about three or four whole ass people throughout the entire thing. It's a small event in lieu of an American Heart listening party. Zing! I do think that despite the fact that Eden was the only narrator throughout the story, his more colorful and bratty personality didn’t stop him from being upstaged by Gale at every turn. It’s like that time Tyrese was performing “How You Gonna Act Like That” live and his background singer sounded more like Tyrese than Tyrese did. Sheesh, can you imagine being that generic? Well, Eden wasn't that bad, but I just found Gale more interesting despite him not having any standout personality traits. As for the world-building though, I liked how this book took place in a completely different fantasy world with a completely different society that barely mirrors our own like a Game of Thrones. It was a nice change of pace, and the world depicted here was lovely, it really was, but I’m used to LGBT+ literature having a certain counter-culture element to it, and I guess it feels odd to read a story with queer characters who are totally accepting of their place in society and the expectations set upon them from the outset. Maybe it’s mostly just because I’ve never been too interested in love stories, queer or otherwise, that emphasize domestic happiness through having children over all else. It’s not even like I think it’s problematic or anything, but it’s wild to read a queer story that seems to focus on values of “legacy” and “heritage,” values which have always been steadfast visions of heteronormative bliss, and not have any commentary on it whatsoever. I mean, one of the reasons why I dislike epilogue chapters so much is because they usually have the main characters ending up with a bunch of children, even if said characters didn't seem like they would live that lifestyle. Also, typically when I read a fantasy centered around harsh societal expectations, it’s written that way specifically so that the narrative can critique the control that society tries to hold over marginalized peoples. So, it's a bit odd to read something, something queer, that has everybody just rolling with the punches. Just because a book paints a picture of a perfect utopia on the canvas doesn’t mean we should take it as such at face value, right? But who knows, it’s probably not that deep. I remember there was this Tumblr post that I really liked that said something like, “I could never have a bodyguard and not fall in love with them!” and you know what? I totally get it. That's all this book needed to be. Everybody knows that a romance full of devotion and duty just hits different, and centering a story around a character who’s only job is to provide such comforts works as an easily accessible short-hand. Besides, His Princely Devotion’s push-and-pull tension to the narrative and the strong allegorical prose nonetheless left me smitten with Eden and Gale’s love affair all the same.

“I thought of you the whole time,” Eden said. “I thought about eating your ass until you screamed my name.”

Finally, a successful buddy read ARC with Megan!

And that unique anatomy tag really doesn't do it justice.

The soft, pink petals stood out against his rich brown skin. They were visibly slick, gently pulsing with need, already dripping with nectar to ease his consort’s way. His flower struck him as delicate, pretty, and obscene all at the same time.

and

His Flower slowly withdrew until it was a closed seam once more, with only a glimmer of dew along edges.

Longer RTC! Short 50-page erotica with a wide release 17 April, available for pre-order now on Smashwords.

Thank you to BookSirens for the eARC, my opinions are my own.

This was a buddy read with Sully and I ate this shit up. It was short, hot 🥵 and also bizarre? I’ve read a lot of unique anatomy but this one left me a bit speechless.

”Heat built in Eden’s stomach as his cock became steel in his palm. He sucked in a breath when his flower abruptly opened, dewy petals unfurling. In the mirror, the glimmering slit quivered and beckoned, begging to be filled.”

I think the most important thing to know about this book is that while there is a love story there are also proxies so you need to be ok with the prince fucking others. There is a reason for this and it’s just a business transaction but I can see it being a problem for some people. I personally thought it was hot 🥵😂

I requested an arc copy from booksirens and this is my honest review.

This book had some really great aspects, so let's start with those! I liked that it was a novella - it was a nice length and I think the author made the right call there! It gave them a chance to establish a world and scenario without having to worry too much about a lengthy plot.

I loved the idea of the flower. It was a fascinating piece of imagery and I would have loved to know more about it.

I also enjoyed the main character - he was a snobby Prince who looked down his nose at everyone, but we also got to see his vulnerability with his station and his future.

The concept of the people who got to serve him having to sacrifice some things in order to do so had its pros and cons, and here's where I found it started to go downhill. The idea that in order to take a higher station and look after Prince Eden meant that some had to have bits removed. We have the general concepts of eunuchs etc. However, while this led to some surprising revelations in the novel, it also led to some greater disappointments.

Gale is his guard and… well, that's all he is. We do have some revelations about him, but they never lead to him gaining a personality or making anything about his existence exciting or relevant to anything going on. He's a pretty average character with not too much happening for him, thought-wise. It kind of works for a novella because it's not as important to focus on, but the lack of personality stuck out like a sore thumb to me.

On to the romance. Well, it didn't really have one. Oh sure, it had 'erotic scenes', but I felt like the entire book was one entire edging scene where nothing really grows between the characters. Basically, Prince Eden wants to smash, he discovers some things, so he does his 'duty' and plays pretend. But there's no real romance, tenderness, or intimacy between them. The constant 'Gale is doing his duty and won't overstep' got tired really quickly.

Plot-wise, like I said, a novella is fine for more of a moment in time rather than an extensive plot, but I wish it had something more than the constant circles. Eden likes Gale, he teases Gale, Gale doesn't make a move, so Eden chucks a tantrum and either hires one of his workers to look after him or makes Gale do something humiliating. Rinse and repeat.

It just lacked an essence. The great things about this story sadly didn't overwhelm the less-great things.

However, I do see a great future for this writer. Focusing on things like creating a less circular plot, the great world building they can do, and drawing in some more intimacy to the characters that is less sexual based (and no, washing his body after he's had sex with another person isn't what I mean) and more about the evolution of the character is super important and I can see this author going really far and becoming a major mm author in the space!

Also, a major issue is that before this goes anywhere, they need an editor quickly. They have obvious spelling issues such as Gale suddenly becoming Glen or words like viscous being used when they meant vicious. If they have an editor, then my eyebrows will touch the sky with how fast they're raised.

Prince Eden of Everna was born a Flower, beautiful, fertile, and bound by duty. Groomed for political marriage, his body belongs to the kingdom. His purity is sacred. But behind the ceremonial silks and controlled smiles, Eden is furious, touch-starved, and caged. Gale, the Champion of Flowers, his silent, disciplined bodyguard, is everything Eden isn’t allowed to want, loyal, unreachable, and always watching. Loyal beyond reason, Gale gave up everything to be near the one person he cannot touch. Yet in stolen moments, care becomes closeness, and devotion begins to look a lot like love. Their relationship starts with taunts and petty power games, but what begins as control quickly turns into longing neither of them can name. Every brush of a hand, every unspoken word carries weight. The romance blooms not through grand acts, but through patience, sacrifice, and aching restraint. A sensual, slow burn, forbidden, emotionally charged, MM fantasy romance, exploring love, desire, duty, loyalty, power, control, service, devotion, bodily autonomy, sacrifice, freedom, tenderness, and intimacy as rebellion.

Poignantly Bittersweet

Eden is a spoiled Flower/prince who delights in tormenting his guard Gale. What starts antagonistically shifts into something forbidden. For a short story, this one still really grabbed me and I was truly engaged with the characters. The ending is bittersweet but still sweet and exactly how it needed to be. An emotional read.

This book is so wonderful. I was really able to connect with the prince. The fact that what he wants is secondary compared to the kingdom. The slight forbidden relationship theme was a nice touch. The champion is an embodiment of self control.

In all the book is wonderful the smut wasn't too much or too little.

I really liked it; it's a different and original story. Although the flower theme puzzled me at first, I have to say that in the end, I found it to be a good point and something I hadn't read before.

It's a short but very intense story,

Highly recommended.

3.5 stars. I thought this novella was well written, but there was too much missing for my taste. It's not exactly a romance because we don't see the characters fall in love, or really get a chance to FEEL their love; we're just told it exists. I really didn't understand how Gale could love Eden when Eden acted so bratty to everyone. And even though most of their relationship is based in sexual attraction, it's not very hot and heavy, though there are a couple of sex scenes. I really wasn't expecting m-preg to be so heavily featured in the story, either. It wasn't mentioned at all in the synopsis I was given for the ARC. I found both the twist and the ending to be unconventional but enjoyable. I really liked how unique it was. But more conventional romance readers might not enjoy it as much as I did.

As usual Arden Lake managed surprises even though it's such a short novella. The unique anatomy actually made some sort of sense. And the bodyguard/prince aspect was hot and romantic. I'm glad I read it!

'He should stop and collect himself, but it felt…
So powerful and dark and good to finally show his flower to someone. To let it happen. To embrace the forbidden.'

I enjoyed this book. It was unique and I liked the dynamic and chemistry between prince Eden and his guard Gale. Eden was a brat- that was clear from the first page. He enjoyed giving orders, warding off all his previous champions, but nothing he did seemed to anger or frustrate the calm, handsome, and professional Gale. Eden's purity must be protected and saved for his consort, but by chance realized Gale's façade cracked one night, and Eden found himself reacting in a new way than he'd had with anyone else. And that was dangerous. The chemistry between them was sizzling heat and I couldn't wait to see how things would turn out for a prince determined to seduce his champion. 4 stars.

This was a short story with some steam and "unique anatomy", but it's not a typical romance. Gale was sweet but I had trouble liking Eden especially early on.
