i'm not magically enchanted by this book but it was nice, it was .. a really interesting depiction of india and all of the colluding and co-existing faiths and kinds of people. tolerance against intolerance, discovery, learning, etc etc. kim was a funky character, for sure a cool kind of dude..cheeky! and a really diverse cast of characters too... the plot i'm not actually sure on 😐 but still ! not bad
The only book I've read more than twice. A magical, memorable tale that sweeps across Colonial India, into Tibet, and back again, as we follow the physical and spiritual awakening of the titular Kim, an orphaned waif.
Classic! Full of humor and adventure. Not my favorite book, can never be one of my favorites because of how long it took me to finish it. None the less, the journey was a blissful one
Read Kim seven, eight times in five years. The type of book that rewards you each time. The type you bring and open anywhere. The language is barbaric, high poetry, insane, babbling...
I love how smooth and beautiful the writing is of this book. This is an adventure spy book with a lot of India history and food culture information in it. I only notice one racist remark about the skin color of the dye that Kim wanted to use on himself. If there is racist in the book, it is subtle and I personally didn't notice it as I was engrossed in the story itself. It is not as obvious as the racist toward Indian as seen in the novel Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. Remember that this is written from a British author who lived in India as a child and as an adult. This book is a classic fiction novel.
I did enjoy this book mainly because of the relationships between different people like the lama and Kim. It's definitely a classic and captures a period of time between the Mutiny and later part of India when they became Independent and free. There are plenty of descriptions of places, food, train, and other things that make this book interesting. Read it your self and find out.
Also one of my father's favorites. You just have to deal with his concept that India's occupation by England was a good thing and you can handle it..maybe not the best idea, but....
