Ever since she could hold a pencil in her hand and form letters, Nealy Gihan has loved writing. This Midwest Jersey girl is a former newspaper reporter and copyeditor who now labors in coastal Virginia as a corporate copywriter by day and lives as a fiction writer by night.
Nealy holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Hampton University and a master's in literary writing from DePaul University. She has published short stories and has written a couple of screenplays, which have been performed in Chicago.
Well everyone, hold on to a box of kleenex, cuz this one will make you cry. Taylor is our main character and she is in need of some love, or that's what I see, and some acceptance. She really just needs a friend and a hug too. And when she finally does start opening up and the truth comes out, it's gunna knock the breath out of you. And it'll make you want to hug her more.
Missing by Mary Laufer
This one is the thrill ride of the book. The characters are definitely well written and have complexity that make them feel so real. And then it's like The Killing meets Prisoners, because you just want to know what happens. You'll search and search and search some more. WOW! And I still want to know what happens!!
The Outlaw by Scott C. Davis
This one is well written, but I wanted a little more from it. I wanted more feelings and more explanations, and though the story is not bad, I'm thinking that because the first two of this book had me so into them that I just needed... more. Now, without making you think that this is a bad story or anything like that, because it's not, I definitely can feel for the main character. And he has his really good moments.
Drive by Nealy Gihan
Is it sad that all I want to do is slap these people. LOL These are the types of characters that are well written, but jeez Louise I didn't like them. I wanted Trevor to grow the hell up, like yesterday, and I wanted Simona to figure out that Trevor is not who she should be with. And the plot has a very interesting line to it.
The Talisman by Heather Hildenbrand
Don't be surprised, but this one is my favorite, of course because my favorite lady wrote it :) Plus I love demons and this is the first Heather has gone into that particular supernatural being. Well done! I don't wanna wait, Heather, you better start looking into making this into a book, a big one, with some more following that. I loved the beginnings of how this world operates, so come on now, gimme gimme!! :)
As an overall, this is a book that is gritty, and quite dark, but still a great read. And as always, there are some better than others, but it's only an opinion, so 4.5 PAWS because all of these stories together make an awesome pairing!
I have received an ARC copy of this anthology in exchange for an honest review.
My Boyfriend is a Senator by Linda Davis (4 stars)
It was an interesting story. It's told from the POV of the main character, Taylor. A young woman, whose boyfriend is a Senator. An older guy, who is making her believe that he is separated. I was sad for her, when she is all the time telling herself that her "Boyfriend is a senator". But most of the time I was annoyed with her. I wanted to shake her and tell her: WAKE UP! But I think the idea would make a really good novel.
Missing by Mary Laufer (5 stars)
This story would be amazing as a whole book! It kept me on edge all the time. I wanted to know what happened! Mary perfectly created all characters. Theresa is this annoying, beautiful but brilliant student. At the beginning I hated her (yeah, the teacher in me was really annoyed), but after I read her first entry in the diary I was heartbroken and I literally cried. Mystery, murder and suspense was that what I love! Amazing and I want to know what happened after!!
The Outlaw by Scott C. Davis (3.5 stars)
I didn't know how to feel about this story. Even though it did have the potential, I was a bit disappointed with the main character. I could understand that he was devastated after what happened to him, but I wanted more explanation. A tantrum to be throw by him. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad story, but could be so much better!
Drive by Nealy Gihan (3 stars)
Hm. The story started off with good idea, but quickly I lost the feeling. I finished it, but I had a meh feeling about it. Could have been much much better.
The Talisman by Heather Hildenbrand (4.5 stars)
I love Heather and I love her books! All of them are amazing, and this one, as a book, would be amazing! The idea is great and grabbed my attention straight away. I love paranormal! And I liked that I was not sure from the beginning what is happening. Amazing, but this ending was a bit rushed for me (I know it is a short story!). I hope Heather will turn it into a full book!
The anthology as a whole for me deserves amazing 4 stars!
When I was given a free download of this, my first e-book, and asked to write an honest review, I wasn't sure how this --or any-- e-publisher could produce a small collection of stories for 99 cents that would really rattle my stars. I wasn't far into the first story when I knew that I was in a great place, where only well-developed characters lived. They were in every story, revealing unique points of view in our everyday settings. I can easily imagine discussions at multiple levels about each story. Because every story is strong, cohesive to the book theme, and universally appealing, I have given this anthology five stars.(less)
I'm not a massive fan of short stories because I always feel there's little character development and the story feels rushed, but not so with this anthology, each story felt complete. While I enjoyed all the stories, my favourite by far was The Talisman by Heather Hildenbrand. She managed to pull me in and keep me griped for her short story. It had mystery, suspense and a great paranormal element. I loved the demi demons and the lore behind the talisman and would love to read more from this world. Her characters were well developed and the plot was very fast paced. Overall a really awesome anthology that will appeal to a wide range of readers.
Ive only read TALISMAN by Heather Hildenbrand so ill withhold rating the anthology as a whole to be fair to the other authors.
Anyways, TALISMAN is the last story in this anthology at maybe 10-20 pages tops. It's quite a simplistic Angel fantasy story and the Talisman being an important relic in the ongoing Angel-Demon war. Avery and Loch are second generation angels who've just been inducted to the army so to speak.
TALISMAN has an open ending so this could either be a prequel to a new series Heather is planning or it could just be a simple fantasy story. I enjoyed it and I plan on reading this to my nephew, inspire him to learn how to pray.
4 Stars This is a great collection of stories. I really want more after reading each one. Each story is it's own. Each left me with questions. I flowed from one story to the next some left me with my mouth hanging open really wanting the rest of the story.
Each is a great little clip that explores different sides of perception. How you see something is not how everyone else will see it. When your life shifts how will you perceive it? Will you look crazy or will everyone around you be the crazy ones.
