Stumbled across this, wasn't sure what to expect, but…wow!

Let me be clear: This isn't the best thing you'll ever read. But..the copy I read was from Kindle Unlimited (rarely a sign of exception quality) and had a horrible (probably AI generated) cover of a woman with anime style breasts, and the cover blurb didn't thrill me either.

But this is actually just a great story. I grew up in the 80s and 90s reading sword and sorcery fantasy books, and apart from some modern quirks (the isekai plotline was less common back then, and the one explicit sex scene would have raised some eyebrows) it could easily have fit in with the best of the books I stayed up late reading back then.

Anyhow: This is a story of a woman who gets kidnapped through a portal, held as a prisoner by an evil empire, learns she can cast magic in this new world, uses it to escape, inadvertently steals a MacGuffin on the way, makes a friend, dodges a bunch of goons, gets some measure of freedom, makes some more allies, and is finally ready to start her attempt at gaining revenge and overthrowing the evil overlord with the help of the MacGuffin.

The characters are good. Not *great*, but quite good. They're not just two dimensional assemblages of cliches, and they have some personality and experience at least a little character growth. Like a lot of isekai stories, the protagonist is *quite* overpowered, but it's more balanced than some (her potential is high, but she starts in a bad position without the knowledge she needs to use the potentential). Also, I have to give some extra credit for the protagonist being a high powered IT executive and not the deeply boring "college student" so many isekai stories like.

The setting is deeply generic, but it's a functional high fantasy setting. Again, some extra credit for the evil empire leaning deeply into sacharine names (everything is named Harmony, Tranquility, Bliss, etc.), although by the end of book 1 the only other polity mentioned are the Free Cities which, you know…not quite as original.

The plot is similar; it's structured like all the other sword and sorcery books you've ever read where the protagonist gets sucked into a quest to defeat evil, but it's a classic for a reason—it works. I'm not complaining.

The writing is mostly quite good. I will note that if the author has a weakness, it's definetly their ability to describe scenes and places. I finished the book with no real idea what the cities and towns the protagonist visited looked like; they're presented alternatively as generic high fantasy and as magitech, but while occasionally a building will be detailed, it's hard to picture the world as a whole. That by no means detracts from the fun of the story, but it's probably the single largest area I'd flag that separates this book from being great, rather than just good.

I'll be honest; I have a big soft spot for adventure stories with likeable characters, a well structured plot, a generally happy tone (I want the characters I like to overcome adversity but not suffer for half a book, and I dislike plots where they end up humiliated or, especially, when conflict arises between allies due to misunderstandings), and (ideally) a bit of a cheesy romance subplot. This story ticks all those boxes, so I recognise I'm 100% the target audience for this book.

Still, if you like any of the above too, I highly recommend it.

I liked the story and the characters were well rounded but, man, I really did not like the writing style. It was way too bland and way too focused on the main character's internal monologue. I usually like being in a character's head, but it seems there's a limit (for me, at least). There were also several parts that I found to be painfully cringe. From what I can tell, this is just the usual style of litrpg, so I guess it's just not for me. 😞

A Spectacular lead off with this series. Nicely done with melding some of modern day into archaic life. It has been a exciting beginning for me and I am preparing to start book#2.
This is my first time reading anything from K.Voss

What a great start!

Absolutely fabulous start. I really love the two M/C's. Interesting plot so far. A little slow on the spice, but the storyline makes up for it. Five stars! I highly recommend it to anyone!

What a letdown. I found the MC annoying and the start of the story not all that interesting. While she's not too naive in things, she's also (to me at least) a personality wise pretty weak MC to me. I got bored and annoyed after the first third and just dropped it.

slow start

Story started out very slow, but slowly gained momentum. I'm hoping that the second book will continue the momentum and not go back and stall.
