⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Solid Introduction to the Legacy of Byzantium
'The Byzantine Empire: An Enthralling Overview of the Byzantium' by Billy Wellman offers a clear and engaging account of one of history’s most enduring yet often underappreciated empires. Spanning over a millennium, the Byzantine Empire was a beacon of continuity between the ancient and medieval worlds, and this book does a commendable job introducing its rich history to readers in an accessible way.
Wellman begins with the transformation of the Eastern Roman Empire and leads us through the reigns of key figures such as Constantine the Great, Justinian I and Basil II. The book gives attention to major events like the construction of the Hagia Sophia, the codification of Roman law, the iconoclast controversy and the empire’s fluctuating relations with both Western Europe and the Islamic world.
The religious, cultural and political complexities of Byzantium are handled well, though somewhat briefly. The narrative is fast-paced and offers just enough detail to keep general readers engaged without becoming bogged down in academic jargon. Wellman also makes a solid effort to explain how Byzantine resilience helped preserve classical knowledge and shape the Orthodox Christian world.
The deduction of one star is due to the lack of deeper analysis and context in certain sections. While the book excels as a broad overview, more in-depth exploration of Byzantine society, economy or art would have enriched the reading experience, especially for those looking to go beyond surface-level facts.
In short, this is an excellent starting point for anyone curious about Byzantium’s fascinating blend of Roman heritage, Greek culture and Christian identity. A captivating read that sheds light on an empire that stood as a bridge between antiquity and modernity.
I was initially excited to read this book, and while I did still find the information fascinating, I felt this book really began to drag. To try to cover the wide berth of the Byzantine Empire in a single book is a difficult task. Because of that, it became hard to engage with the book and take in the history, and it took me a long time to finish. However, it was very extensive and informative on the world of the Byzantines.
