Cassie Klein thinks there is something wrong with her – she just doesn’t know what. Eager to become a wife; a mother; whole – she says “I do” and then her life falls apart. Convinced that she can not achieve intimacy with anyone, she is doomed to be alone forever – a poster child for all the cat ladies of the world. Afraid to trust another relationship.
When a trip to her mother’s attic triggers a partial bad memory, she realizes she was molested by her 5th grade teacher, before she left the town of Waterford. She wasn’t the only one. She tries to find the girl, Alyssa, only to discover, Alyssa went went missing and has never been found. Only Cassie knows who is responsible. When she learns that her former teacher is about to receive an award presented by the Governor, she must return to let the good people of Waterford know exactly who it is that they are honoring. Her only hope is a lone sheriff’s deputy Keith Malone who patrols the town.
But that is the problem. He has a past of his own and reopening a twenty year old cold case is the very last thing he wants to do. On administrative leave indefinitely from the Minneapolis Police department, he is more than content to hide in Waterford where crime there is almost unheard of. He decides that Cassie is just a woman with a chip on her shoulder. Not worth his time. Case closed.
As Keith is being pushed by his boss to investigate the case, this forces him to have to work with Cassie. They team up to be the most unlikely pair to unravel events surrounding the disappearance of Cassie’s classmate. Cassie must learn to trust Keith, and overcome her fears of being close to him.
Together they will need to figure our what happened to Alyssa before the town completes the construction of a bike path that will pave over the crime scene, and hide her teachers’ secret forever.
Why I wrote this book: In the 5th grade my teacher gave me some little candied almonds in netting, with a fake wedding ring att6ached. Said it was like we were married. Crazy, I thought but, hey I got the prize out of the whole class. later he said that some of our class was going on a picnic at noon recess so bring a lunch. That picnic was only him and me. I remembered going to the park, and coming back to school, but nothing in between. When I got married things immediately changed the minute that ring was on my finger. And marriage to my best friend became an isolated internal hell. Fifty years later, a memory of that picnic emerged. A therapist told me the wedding ring was a trigger. Things began to fall into place and make sense. I could not remember that last hour so I started writing for clarity. When that didn't happen, I turned my personal history and feelings into fiction. As the truth in the Jacob Wetterling story was unfolding, I let that truth guide the fiction part of my story, resulting in Moonstone.
If you know me then you know that I am not the most technical bulb in the box. I am not good at connecting my book to my own author profile, so pardon me for posting this review. I just want others to know why I wrote it. Cassie, my main characters emotion are all mine. This story also illustrates the fact that even if you can get away with murder, you can't escape that little voice inside your head that knows the truth.
This was an emotional and quietly intense read that really surprised me.
At its core, this story is about trauma and how it follows you into adulthood. Cassie is not a perfect or overly polished heroine. She feels broken, unsure of herself, and desperate to understand why intimacy and happiness seem just out of reach. When a buried memory resurfaces and she realizes she was abused by her fifth grade teacher, the story takes on a powerful urgency. Knowing another girl went missing makes it even more heartbreaking.
The small town setting adds so much tension. Waterford feels like the kind of place that protects its own, even when it should not. The fact that this teacher is about to receive an award makes the stakes feel very real and frustrating.
I liked that Keith is not instantly on Cassie’s side. He has his own issues and doubts her at first, which makes their partnership feel more believable. Their connection builds slowly and does not take away from the main mystery.
The looming bike path construction adds a strong sense of urgency, especially with the possibility of evidence being lost forever. Overall, this is a character driven suspense story about confronting the past and finding the courage to speak up.
Moonstone is far more than a crime novel, it's an emotionally gripping story about buried memories, courage, and the long road to healing. From the opening chapters, the mystery pulls you in, but it's the emotional depth of the characters that truly makes this book unforgettable.
Cassie Klein is a compelling protagonist whose journey of uncovering a forgotten past feels authentic and deeply moving. As long-hidden secrets begin to surface, the tension steadily builds, making it impossible not to keep turning the pages. The small-town setting adds another layer of suspense, where silence, loyalty, and fear have protected the truth for decades.
What makes this novel especially impactful is how thoughtfully it handles difficult subject matter. Inspired by real-life events, the story balances emotional weight with a compelling investigation, never losing sight of the human cost of buried secrets. The relationship between Cassie and the sheriff's deputy adds heart to the story without overshadowing the central mystery.
The writing is engaging, the pacing is excellent, and the revelations are both satisfying and heartbreaking. Moonstone is a memorable blend of mystery, emotional drama, and resilience that lingers long after the final page.
This was a heavy, emotionally grounded read that unfolds slowly but deliberately. The book does a strong job exploring how childhood trauma can echo into adulthood, affecting trust, intimacy, and self-worth. Cassie is a believable and sympathetic protagonist, and her need to understand what happened to her feels urgent and raw rather than dramatic.
The mystery surrounding Alyssa’s disappearance adds tension, especially with the looming threat of the town literally covering up the past. Waterford itself feels like a character, shaped by denial and quiet complicity. Keith’s reluctance to reopen the case makes sense given his own history, and his dynamic with Cassie develops naturally over time.
This is not a flashy thriller, but a thoughtful, character-driven mystery that prioritizes emotional truth over shock value. It’s uncomfortable at times, but purposeful, and ultimately about reclaiming agency and refusing to let the past stay buried.
Moonstone is a gripping and emotionally powerful story that kept me invested from beginning to end. I really enjoyed how Diane Kasulis blended mystery, suspense, trauma, and romance into a story that felt both compelling and deeply personal.
Cassie’s journey was especially moving. Watching her confront painful memories, overcome her fears, and find the courage to seek answers for Alyssa made her character easy to root for. The relationship between Cassie and Keith also added another meaningful layer to the story, especially as they slowly learned to trust each other.
The mystery surrounding Alyssa’s disappearance kept me turning the pages, and the urgency of uncovering the truth before the crime scene was destroyed added great tension. Overall, Moonstone is an engaging, emotional, and thought-provoking read with memorable characters and a mystery that stays with you. Definitely a five star read!
I just finished this novel and it stayed with me long after the last page. Cassie’s struggle with feeling broken and unable to connect deeply with others felt raw and authentic. As her buried childhood memories begin to surface, the story shifts into a gripping search for truth that had me completely invested. Learning what happened in Waterford, and realizing Alyssa was never found, made the stakes feel painfully real.
I admired Cassie’s courage in returning to confront a respected man hiding behind a polished reputation. Keith’s resistance and gradual involvement added complexity and tension. Their partnership felt genuine, built on hesitation, mistrust, and slow healing. The urgency surrounding the town’s plans heightened the suspense. This was an emotional, powerful read about confronting the past and reclaiming your voice.
Moonstone is a powerful blend of mystery, psychological drama, and emotional redemption. Diane Kasulis crafts an intricate narrative where every chapter reveals another layer of a decades-old secret that a community has chosen to ignore. The novel succeeds not only as a suspenseful investigation but also as an honest exploration of survival, memory, and the lifelong consequences of abuse and silence. Kasulis creates believable characters whose fears, motivations, and hopes feel genuine, making the unfolding mystery all the more impactful. The carefully paced plot, authentic emotional storytelling, and satisfying resolution make Moonstone a standout novel for readers who enjoy intelligent crime fiction with heart. This is a story that challenges readers to consider how truth can remain hidden in plain sight—and what it takes for someone to finally bring it into the light."
I closed this book feeling shaken and inspired at the same time. Cassie’s story felt painfully real her confusion about why her marriage crumbled and her fear of emotional closeness made so much more sense as the layers of her past were revealed. The attic scene was especially powerful; from there, the mystery surrounding Alyssa’s disappearance pulled me in completely.
I appreciated how the author handled such a heavy topic with sensitivity while still delivering real suspense. Keith’s reluctance and gradual shift added depth, and their uneasy partnership slowly turning into trust felt earned. The ticking clock with the bike path construction created incredible tension. More than a mystery, this was a story about courage, truth, and finally facing what was buried for far too long.
This was a heavy but absorbing read that stayed with me after I finished. The story blends a cold case mystery with an emotional look at how buried trauma can shape a person’s entire life. Cassie feels authentic in her fear, confusion, and longing for connection, and her journey never feels exaggerated or sensationalized.
The mystery surrounding Alyssa’s disappearance adds real tension, especially as the town of Waterford seems determined to move on and forget. Keith and Cassie’s partnership is slow and uneasy, but that realism works in the book’s favor. This is not a fast-paced thriller. It is a quiet, character-driven story about truth, accountability, and finding the courage to speak when silence feels safer.

This book feels deeply personal and that authenticity elevates every page.
Cassie’s struggle with fragmented memory is portrayed with sensitivity and realism. The emotional weight of not being believed, of doubting yourself, of wondering if you’re “crazy,” is handled with care. When the investigation intersects with town politics and reputation, it becomes clear that this story is as much about systems of silence as it is about one man’s crime.
The discovery of the remains and the reveal of the moonstone ring are powerful without being exploitative. The author chooses emotional truth over shock value, and that choice makes the resolution deeply satisfying.
Readers who appreciate character driven suspense will find this especially moving.
Moonstone explores what happens when justice is delayed for decades and what it takes to reopen wounds that never truly healed.
The portrayal of Jack Ciccero is chilling not because of what he says or does on the page, but because of how ordinary and protected he is. The fact that he’s about to be honored when the story begins adds a layer of moral urgency that drives the narrative forward.
Cassie’s internal battle is just as compelling as the investigation. The question isn’t only “What happened to Alissa?” but “What happened to Cassie?” That dual mystery gives the novel emotional depth.
By the final chapter, the sense of release feels earned. This is a story about survival and about refusing to let history stay rewritten.
This novel balances psychological insight with procedural elements beautifully.
The cold case investigation unfolds realistically, including setbacks, mistaken leads, and professional hesitation. I appreciated that the bones discovered early on were not immediately the breakthrough everyone hoped for that felt authentic. The story respects the complexity of real investigations.
But the heart of the book lies in Cassie’s healing. The final scenes are not triumphant in a dramatic sense; they are quiet, intimate, and restorative. The author understands that closure isn’t about headlines it’s about being able to breathe again.
If you enjoy mysteries with emotional depth and real human stakes, Moonstone delivers.
Moonstone is a beautifully written blend of psychological suspense and emotional drama. Diane Kasulis creates a compelling mystery while exploring the lasting effects of childhood trauma and the courage it takes to confront buried truths. Cassie is a relatable protagonist whose journey feels authentic from beginning to end. The pacing is deliberate, allowing both the mystery and the characters to develop naturally without ever feeling slow. The small-town setting adds another layer of tension, where secrets are protected by silence and long-held loyalties. This is much more than a crime novel—it is a thoughtful story about healing, justice, and finding the strength to face the past. I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy emotionally driven mysteries.
This novel surprised me with its emotional depth. While the mystery itself is engaging, the real strength of Moonstone lies in its characters and the way Diane Kasulis explores memory, trauma, and resilience. What stood out most to me was the emotional depth woven into the mystery. This is not simply a story about solving a crime. It is a story about confronting the past, reclaiming lost pieces of oneself, and finding courage in unimaginable circumstances. The small town setting adds an unsettling atmosphere where silence feels just as dangerous as the truth.
