Magic Has Never Felt This Real: A Series Starter That Delivers

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Let me tell you about a book that completely blindsided me in the best possible way. "The Harvest: The Mercer Witches Book I" by D.O. Scissom is the kind of urban fantasy that reminds you why you fell in love with the genre in the first place.

M.M. Wildes owns an occult shop called "Tarot and Beyond," but that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her secrets 🔮. Her real name belongs to a girl who died as part of some mysterious bargain. Her face is hidden behind a constantly shifting magical glamour. And she's sworn to protect innocent people even if it costs her everything, including her one shot at true happiness.

The concept of Mercer as this magical home and family hub is absolutely brilliant. It's not just a place but a living, breathing community of witches and their consorts bound together by both magic and blood. When these magical beings start getting murdered and potential new family members begin disappearing without a trace, the stakes feel genuinely terrifying.

What sets this book apart from other witch stories is how Scissom explores the changing nature of the magical world itself. The boundaries between good and evil are becoming increasingly blurred, creating moral complexity that kept me guessing throughout. Characters have to make impossible choices, and the consequences feel real and lasting.

The mystery element is expertly crafted 🕵️‍♀️. Who's behind these attacks on the magical community? The reveals come at just the right pace, building tension while developing character relationships in ways that feel organic and earned.

M.M.'s internal conflict between her duty to protect others and her desire for personal happiness adds emotional depth that elevates this beyond a simple supernatural thriller. Watching her navigate relationships while carrying the weight of her mission creates some genuinely touching moments.

The world-building deserves special recognition. Scissom has created a magical system that feels both mysterious and logical, with rules that matter and magic that comes with real costs. The occult shop setting provides the perfect gateway into this larger magical world.

Family dynamics play a central role here, and I'm not just talking about biological family. The chosen family bonds forged through magic and shared purpose create some of the most emotionally resonant scenes in the book. When these relationships are tested to their breaking point, you feel every moment of strain.

The pacing never lets up. Just when you think you've caught your breath, another revelation or twist propels you forward. This is definitely a "just one more chapter" kind of book that will keep you up way past your intended bedtime.

If I had to point out any weaknesses, it would be that some secondary characters could use a bit more development. But honestly, that feels more like anticipation for future books than a real criticism of this one.

This series opener accomplishes everything it sets out to do and then some. It establishes a rich, complex world, introduces compelling characters facing impossible odds, and sets up what promises to be an epic continuing story. The Harvest has begun indeed, and I cannot wait to see what comes next! ✨

Thank you to D.O. Scissom and BookSirens for the gifted copy of this book. I was happy to leave my honest opinion.

I really tried with The Harvest. Made it through six chapters, waiting for a central plot to take root, but honestly? I still have no idea what I’m reading. The narrative jumps between disconnected stories like it’s auditioning for a short story anthology, not a novel. The last chapter gave off True Detective S1 finale vibes—swampy, weird, and aimless—but not in a good way. At that point, my interest flatlined.

Dialogue-wise, it’s a lot of one-person TED Talks instead of actual conversations. Half a page of someone monologuing while the other character just stands there like a confused NPC. Felt more like reading transcripts than natural dialogue.

That said, I did enjoy the first chapter. The writer character had potential, and I honestly think if the book had stayed with her, I’d still be reading. But alas, she vanished into the narrative ether, and so did my patience.

This book started out fairly brutal, honestly.
And then it completely changed and took me by surprise. Not a bad surprise, but also kind of not a good one. It definitely went more towards urban fantasy and away from the horror that I was kind of expecting.

I was completely confused by the introduction of M.M. Wildes and then the story jumps to Bets and her journey into what is essentially their Coven. The story definitely needed more of a definite line of direction, and the story really required better introductions to characters. It was alarming at how jumpy the story was. I spent a lot of the book confused at what was going on. It also seemed like a little too much. Like the instance with the older couple and their child, if it had just been told from the POV of the murderer, it would have been better.

There is definitely an excellent story here, and I think it could be great if it were a bit more refined.

I Thought the premise of this book was intetesting. A secret sect of modern day witches, with a morally grey supernatural benefactor battling fighting everyday evil as well as a surging organised threat.
Unfortunately the execution was very poor.
My main issues were
1. The pacing of the book was off. I think this was due to undefined leaps in time and the story being told from many POVs but the story lines didnt seem to line up. It also didnt help that each chapter is a snippet of a story - but you dont necessarily get the full story which makes it really hard to connect to any of the myriad cast of characters
2. There were occasions where entire chapters were entirely redundant e.g The first chapter of M's added nothing to the character or story
3.There was too much procedural writing e.g. the POV character thinks about the plan then describes to another character in excrutiating detail the plan again, the we see them do it. Too much of the plot was driven by this. And yet somehow it managed to give very little worldbuilding.
4.There were many spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, missing words and sentances that didnt quite make sense or flow properly.

I seriously considered DNFing this book at about 25% but carried on in the hope the literary choices were building to something and it would pay off in the end - unfortunately that wasnt the case and i really wished I had not persevered

The Harvest has begun. The Mercer Witches are ready

An intense and epic start to a dark, magical series.
The Harvest is the first book in D.O. Scissom’s Mercer Witches series, a story of righteous witches who fight evil and deliver justice to the powerless. The Mercer Witches are a powerful coven of women who take on consorts—willing human men sworn to protect them until the very end.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the vague title, but once I saw the full series name on Goodreads (The Harvest: The Mercer Witches Series Book One), I realized I was in for something much bigger. This is a sweeping, high-stakes tale featuring women trying to do good, zealots convinced they’re righteous, and dark forces rising.

The beginning was a bit overwhelming with a heavy info load and fast-switching perspectives, but once the world and characters settled into place, I was hooked. The action scenes are thrilling, the gore is vivid, and I was fully pulled into the Mercer Witches' world.

What didn’t work as well for me were the constant cliffhangers and time jumps—they made the pacing feel rushed, especially near the end. And as an ARC, there were quite a few typos. Still, I’m eager to keep reading and see where this epic battle of good vs. evil goes. I just hope future installments spend more time with each character and smooth out the pacing.

I absolutely love a good horror fantasy novel. Books like this take me back to the heart of the books that I started reading years ago.

This was dark and exciting. It really pulled me in. The story of the Mercer Witches was just what I needed. Each person individual trauma that they were going through was spectacular to read. That was the best part that just kept me on the edge of my seat.

What was even better was the complexities and dynamics of the characters. It made you look at the picture of how things from the outside may look great but internally you never really know someone or the secret said they harbor. You also never know how strong someone can be until they're put in a situation where being strong is all they have.

This book shows you the resolve of individuals and how far are you would go to protect what you love, especially from evil. The fear and the horror that was felt in this area was was very well written. You felt what they felt and that folks is what makes this a page turner.

I am so glad that I read this because it made me realize how much I really miss books in this genre.

Thank you to BookSirens and BHC Publishing LLC for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately, The Harvest didn’t work for me. The writing felt unpolished with frequent grammatical issues, an overly casual tone, and a disjointed flow that made it difficult to stay engaged. It felt more like a stream of consciousness than a fully developed narrative. The story introduced an overwhelming number of characters in rapid succession, and both the plot and world-building were often confusing, including elements introduced late in the book – like the Triformis – that lacked clarity.

That said, the ending – particularly the conflict between the witches and religious zealots – was more engaging as the pacing picked up. Once I could keep the characters straight, a few grew on me slightly, and the plot started to come together towards the end. Overall, though, I felt the positives were overshadowed by the book’s foundational issues and I struggled to connect with the narrative throughout.

1.75 stars, rounded up to 2.

Overall I enjoyed the read, but it's a rollercoaster read that starts with a bang.
It's an interesting worldbuild and magic system, there's character development, there's action. In general, it ticks all the boxes. I was absorbed in all the different characters ordeals and wanted to go on. It's a subtle mix of urban fantasy and horror, the balance between both genres is really enjoyable. I could sense how much the writer loves his story in the way it's written, the passion is palpable.

BUT even though I love the "different timelines" style, with so many characters and events happening all over the place, I got confused some times. It's pretty dense as well, so you need to hold on tight. That being said, I'm eager to read the next installment.

I had to force myself to finish it.

This sounded like exactly my thing at first (also love the idea of cults).
The Harvest follows M.M. Wildes as she tries to protect her magical home (Mercer) while something dark begins killing witches and abducting future members of her coven/family.

But the book just didn’t work for me. There were so many characters introduced out of nowhere, and it made the story really hard to follow. I kept flipping back trying to figure out who people were and how they connected. Some scenes were confusing, and conversations often went on way too long without adding much. I wanted to like this so badly, but it lost me more than once.

So yeah, not for me unfortunately.

I absolutely loved The Harvest: The Mercer Witches, Book 1! From the very first page, I was drawn into this dark and enchanting world of witches, magic, and secrets. The characters feel real and complex—each with their own struggles and hidden depths—and I found myself genuinely caring about what would happen to them. The story is suspenseful and atmospheric, with just the right mix of chills and intrigue to keep me turning pages late into the night. I especially appreciated how the author wove together personal drama and magical elements so seamlessly—it made the Mercer family feel alive, mysterious, and compelling. If you enjoy stories that are equal parts magical and thrilling, this book is an absolute must-read. I can’t wait to see where the series goes from here!

This was an action packed story and has some seriously well done world building. I liked the magic system, and the use of morally grey characters, I did struggle with the seemingly massive cast of characters. There are so many characters that I never felt like I had enough time to really get behind anyone. The story structure felt a little disjointed in the beginning, but really did become a lot more cohesive in the second half. I do hope for a second book to continue the tale, but was pleased that there was a well defined ending and not a mid action cliffhanger.

DNF'ed unfortunately :(

I really tried to enjoy this book and there were genuinely so many good ideas that could have been further explored. I feel like a lot of the chapters could have been extended, the chapters not jump to so many timelines and everything be more spread out (perhaps into multiple books). It felt like the author was writing down every idea as it came and this is no offense to the author but it read like how I speak when I go off so many different tangents. :))

This is not to deter people from giving this book a shot! It had a lot of potential, I think it just needed some trimming and reordering :))

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!

I am not typically a dark fantasy reader.
The story was not what I imagined.
It was very captivating and difficult to put down as I wanted to know what happened next
Yes there were multiple characters and different worlds and still not sure which ones are really the "good guys" , It, like many other books, speaks of the characters and their relationships with others, I think that is part of the mystery, but it left me interested enough in the end that I can't wait for the 2nd book to come out.
Good read.

I didn’t really understand what was going on. The “story” itself was decent but I wasn’t sure if it was different stories, multiple points of views, different timelines, standalone stories? The names of the chapters definitely hysterical. I kept flipping back trying to figure out who was what, where we were and what was going on. I kept rereading the synopsis to see if I had the right book. Very confusing

Colleen (Bets) is celebrating her 40th birthday with family and friends. With a visit from Seanchara her world was to turn upside down by ten that night. Lots of characters to add to the mix of a very deep story that holds you to the pages for hours.

Fantastic first book in what I hope is a long series. The Author weaves multiple storyline into a beautiful tapestry both rich in character and imagery. The story, although modern in setting, feels like homespun storytelling. I'm looking forward to the continuation of this story in book 2!

So first of all I really think the complete title of this book needed to be on the cover. The Harvest is all well and good, but The Harvest: The Mercer Witches Book One tells you so much more about what the book actually is. I'll be honest between the time I read the blurb and applied and when I actually read the book I kept forgetting what the book was actually about when I would just see the title written in my schedule or see the cover on Netgalley.

The blurb itself really sets up a lot. I got hardcore nostalgia vibes from it. It took me back to middle/high school, curled up in my bed reading Anne Rice or whatever other witch based book I came across. For that I was an absolute sucker immediately.

I really felt the vibes and setting for most of the book stuck to that heavy, horror, magic but not in a fun way, dark vibe. Really enjoyed it. The idea of the Mercer witches mixed with a mystery of disappearances? Brought a thriller/mystery aspect to it that was unexpected but not unwelcome.

The issue I had with this book was it was just a little all over the place which left you a little confused at times, and wanting more pretty often. At almost 400 pages I wouldn't say, 'oh to fix it it would just have needed to be longer and spent more time on different parts with different pov and what was going on.' I know this is book one already meaning there are more books to come, but this honestly could have been two books on its own. So there could have been more fleshing out of everyone and everything in it without the book ending up 800 pages.

Regardless of that a solid first book in a series I am looking forward to continuing.
