12 Ways to Kill Your Family at Christmas

Rate this book

Perfect for fans of The White Lotus, Knives Out and anyone who’s ever wanted to strangle someone over Christmas lunch.

All Olivia wanted was one last miserable Christmas with her husband’s awful family before moving to Australia. She didn’t expect a murder.

Now the snow has cut them off and she’s stuck in a stately country house, with her increasingly deranged relatives and the rising suspicion that someone is picking them off one by one.

As the bodies pile up and the festive façade starts to crack, Olivia must survive the season, or, at the very least, get through lunch without anyone else choking on a sprout.

Sharp, smart and deliciously twisted, this is Christmas with all the cold cuts, warm lies and at least one suspicious pudding.

My family better watch out this holiday season because I took so many notes. 📝😂 This seasonal mystery blends dark comedy with classic whodunit vibes and makes for a perfect December read. As you can probably tell from the title, it’s a story that doesn’t take itself too seriously and fully leans into the far-fetched. And really, who hasn’t at least entertained the idea of wanting to kill their relatives during the holidays?

Most of the characters are despicable and deeply unlikable, so it’s surprisingly easy to find yourself rooting for the murderer as the family gets picked off one by one. Even with my mediocre detective skills, I figured out the culprit pretty early, especially once bodies started dropping like flies. My enjoyment wasn’t affected because I still found the whole thing fun, but if you’re someone who craves jaw-dropping twists, this may not be the book for you.

🎧 I listened to the audiobook which was expertly narrated by Lucy Price-Lewis, Kristin Atherton and Joe Jameson.

The story revolves around a festive-themed, dark-humour-filled whodunit. We begin by meeting the Weiss family: Mum Olivia, Dad Miles and their teenage children Callum and Martha, who are moving to Australia in the New Year for Miles' new job. Before they go, they are on their way to stay with Miles' posh and very wealthy mum and dad and the rest of the extended Weiss family over Christmas.

When, during the course of celebrations, Miles' mum and dad make an announcement that they have changed their Will to leave the bulk of their estate to his brother Tristan, tensions begin to rise. Later, one of the family members takes a tumble and dies. It looks like a tragic accident, or was it?

And so, one by one, 'tragic accidents' seem to befall more members of the family. As we progress through the murder mystery journey, the perfect façade that some of them try to present begins to crumble, and we find out that everyone could have a motive for killing somebody else. Nobody was particularly likeable (which I think is the point), so you ended up not really caring who died next.

I thought the first half of the book was better than the second; everything started to get a bit repetitive as it went on, and the pacing started to drag. There are some plot points that don't quite add up, and you do have to suspend your disbelief—but let's face it, this is just a fun but dark and twisted, festive romp through familial tensions that turn murderous with some humour thrown in along the way.

They will not be "dashing through the snow" or decking the "the halls with boughs of holly" this Christmas season. It will be no silent night when a scream cuts through the air and a family member is found dead! 12 Ways to Kill Your Family at Christmas is a holiday murder mystery thriller about a family who has gathered at Christmas and are dropping like flies! Someone amongst them is not feeling the holiday cheer and is in facet a killer!

Olivia can't wait to get through the obligatory Christmas visit with her husband's horrid family. She just wants to move to Australia with her family and start again. But first, she must attend the family gathering. It's Christmas time and the snow is falling, and the country house is warm and cozy. But the people inside are anything but warm and cozy. When one member of the family is found dead, fingers are pointed and before they can stop bickering, another family member is found dead!

First off, the title, 12 Ways to Kill Your Family at Christmas grabbed my attention right off the bat! Who hasn't become annoyed with a family member during the holidays? But annoyed enough to kill???? That is an entirely different story. But in this story, there is a killer who is picking off members of this family at a fast pace. I was fully engaged and kept changing my list of suspects while reading. I enjoyed the plot, the snarky and out for themselves characters, the tension, and the twists. Plus, the reveal at the end......I did not see that coming at all!

Entertaining, fun, mysterious, and an engaging holiday murder mystery!

⊹ This was an easy, entertaining read. I hated every single character & was rooting for none of them, but it does feel like that was sorta the point. You know what, I take that back— I started rooting for the killer, that’s how horrible this family was. 🤣 Even though I figured out who the killer was pretty much after the first murder, I still had a good time. You won’t be bored, that’s for sure. Just don’t expect a cozy little murder mystery or a shocking big reveal.

To Olivia‘s relief, this will be the last Christmas she and her children Martha and Callum, will have to endure of her husband Miles utterly ghastly family before they emigrate to Australia. That’s probably to get away from that lot especially Miles’s mother Jeannie and who can blame them? However, now she’s stuck in the country mansion, it’s snowing heavily and as if that’s not bad enough, someone is picking the family off one by one. Who will be next, I wonder? So, welcome to Weiss Manor to festivities to end all festivities, to a toxic gathering and a puzzle. Who will be the last man/woman standing and who may additionally lay claim to the multimillion fortune of the Weiss family?

Well, this is one of the most entertaining and fun festive novels I’ve read, albeit in sunny July. The time of year actually doesn’t matter because this fast paced, twisty read can easily be consumed at any time. Initially, there seems to be a lot of characters but as they’re all varying shades of mad, inebriated, self-centred, egotistical, greedy or just plain nasty I don’t have any trouble distinguishing them. The prize goes to Jeannie for being the most manipulative and bat **** crazy of the lot. I wish I could say they don’t deserve it as they drop like flies in the run-up to Christmas. With one or two (ok, most of them) I feel like cheering 😂

The plot is rip roaringly (like the fires to keep out the cold) chilling (like the weather), bonkers (take your pick), barking mad (all except Liv’s family), tense and suspenseful (look over your shoulder, you might be next), competitive (who can stay alive to get the dosh), dramatic (again, several candidates for that award) and clever (not you Fergus, Miles‘s uncle). It’s engrossing, amusing and well written with witty chapter headings. I have two candidates for the perpetrator and yay, I got one right!! Well played Natasha Bache – this is huge fun.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HarperCollins, One More Chapter for the much appreciated early copy in return for an honest review.

It's a very good whodunit with strong Knives Out and some Agatha Christie vibes.
I found it very addictive, well written and entertaining.

The characters are mostly despicable but each in their own ways that's what makes it work. I clearly started to root for the killer pretty early on.

This would be perfect for the Holidays season.

My only complaint is that I wished more of the secondary plots points were resolved, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

Thank you HarperCollins for this ARC!

Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins/One More Chapter for this well-constructed, humorous and entertaining mystery by Natasha Bache. It featured dark, but witty narration by Olivia. She has been dreading the annual Christmas festivities hosted by her husband, Miles's extended family, at the Weiss mansion. The Weiss family are fabulously wealthy, and they disapproved when Miles married Olivia, from a working-class family. All Weiss relatives are condescending and insulting to Olivia and her two teenage children, Callum and Martha. The sharp words were supposed to provide humour, but I often found myself cringing.

The story is narrated by Olivia. She is relieved to know that this will be the last Weiss family gathering she will attend with Miles, Callum, and Martha, as they are soon moving to Australia.
We learn in the first chapter that Olivia is being questioned by detectives at a time when ten people are already dead. killed in assorted ways. Olivia narrates the events, describing each member of the family as unpleasant, drunken or deranged. Is her description of each person accurate? Will her family survive the condescension and insults? Are their lives also in danger as family members are murdered one by one? There were many characters to keep straight, but as the number of characters decreased, this became less of a problem.

The gathering began on an unsettling note. It is announced that a will to the multimillion-dollar fortune has been altered, and each person is anxious to inherit. This adds greed to a motive. Olivia's children are subjected to insults, including homophobic remarks toward her daughter and snide comments about her son. Even with the continuing deaths, the Weiss family seem coolly detached. Miles' mother, Jeannie, insists the festivities proceed as planned. There was a game of Charades that was difficult to follow and a competition to decorate gingerbread houses, with no acknowledgement of the deaths. All characters seem rude and nasty. An uncle is a falling-down drunk. Another relative has just been released from prison but hasn't shown up as expected.

Olivia is self-centred, annoying, and not particularly likable. Her husband, Miles, is calm and supportive. There are unsigned diary entries describing each murder, but it is difficult to pinpoint the suspect. Each time you think you know who is committing the crimes, those suspects become victims. There are many twists, turns, and surprising secrets revealed. The characters are so unlikable that their deaths are almost anticipated. There was a major unexpected twist at the end. Well done!
Publication is scheduled for October 09/2025.

📚 Would I recommend? yes!
💬 tldr thoughts: this was so ridiculous but I loved every minute of it!

In the package:
📦 murder mystery
📦 over the top characters
📦 dark comedy

Plot: Olivia Weiss has to spend Christmas with her husband's rich and dysfunctional family. A snowstorm has them trapped at the manor and soon enough, members of the family start to drop dead.

Thoughts: oh this was FUN!! 🤭 Almost every character was absolutely despicable but it's what made it so great. I loved the writing style and I had some good laughs reading this one. There are a lot of characters so it was a bit confusing in the beginning and I did guess who the killer was so the twist wasn't really shocking in the end but other than that I had a great time reading this one! It's humorous, over-the top and fast paced! This book was giving Knives Out with a mix of White Lotus, so if you enjoyed those, I would recommend reading this book!

Well, after all the sappy, Hallmarkesque, holiday romance stories, it was great coming across a good old fashioned murder mystery. While the book summary referenced a comparison to Knives Out, which I can see why (loved those films), honestly, to me, it came across as an Agatha Christie, holiday, And Then There Were None, minus the creepy nursey rhyme spoilers of the murders

The book summary lays out the premise and introduces the primary storyline. There are a lot of characters in this story starting with Liv and Miles and their teenaged kids Callen and Martha. Then there is Miles’s brother, Tristin and his wife Mimi and their teenaged kids Bebe and Cece. There are Miles’s parents Jeannie and George, Uncle Fergus (George’s brother) and Aunt Clem, and finally Grandma Toots, Miles’s Grandma and George’s mother. So, a lot of suspects.

There is also a secondary storyline surrounding the will of Grandpa Eugene, who died four years ago and left pretty much everything to Jeannie, George and, Quentin (who is in prison for murder), Fergus and Clem’s son, and very little to everyone else. Seems Grandpa Eugene was a total @$$#*!% and was physically abusive to George, Fergus, Miles, Tristin, and throughout all of their childhoods, with George and Fergus doing nothing to protect their sons from their father.

It's not long before the first murder occurs, and once again, lots of suspects to choose from. By the halfway point, the bodies are piling up, and I’ve narrowed my list of suspects to two (maybe three), but definitely leaning more towards one than anyone else. The story flips back and forth between Liv and the murderer who revels in glee after every murder (a couple are kind of gross).

Deep into the second half (about 75-80% mark), I’m still not certain who the killer is, but have now flipped to one of the other characters that I suspected. While the epilogue wasn’t that shocking (almost everyone has been murdered by then), but it was the way that the killer revealed themself to one of the survivors. Moral of the story: karma is a %*^(#!!!

The character development for some of the characters was well done, especially the murderer, and the pacing was steady to fast. It seemed like every few chapters, someone was getting murdered. The storyline was addictive, and the writing was pretty good. Not as good as the Queen of Mystery, Miss Christie, but kept me guessing for most of the story. I’m looking at an overall rating of 4.4 that I will be rounding down to a 4star review.

Olivia Weiss is off to spend yet another miserable Christmas with her husband, Miles’s family before they and their two children, Callum and Martha begin their new life in Australia. But Olivia has no idea how terrible this holiday will be.

First, she and her family are essentially disinherited. Then the snow begins and the entire family is trapped at Weiss Manor. Oh, and then the murders begin.

This wasn’t much cuter than expected. It’s not quite a cozy, but has that same spirit and it’s entirely unrealistic, yet fun. I thought I knew who the murderer was right up until the very end, but I was fooled. Frothy enjoyment to drink down with your eggnog.

And Then There Was ... One?
A review of the One More Chapter eBook (October 9, 2025) released simultaneously with the paperback/audiobook.
Now we were expected to do a 180 and go straight into baking. I had to wonder whether she had truly lost the plot. ‘Why does it feel like we’re about to take part in Sweeney Todd’s Great British Bake Off?’

Romantasy author Olivia with her husband and two teenage children are spending a final Christmas with his hated family before moving to Australia. The family estate is now run by Olivia's despised mother-in-law after the death of the family patriarch a few years earlier. The rest of the clan are all greedy and self-centred elites who sneer at the lower-class background of Olivia and her academian husband. But things take a turn when suddenly members of the family start dying off, at first by apparent accidents but then by means of evidently cold-blooded murder.

There were plenty of allusions to various classic Agatha Christie works throughout this diabolical seasonal outing which is outrageously over-the-top with its rampage of familial murder. But in the best traditions of the Golden Age of Murder, the deceased are not exactly upstanding citizens and your allegiance and sympathies with Olivia & family are never shaken.

A definite not-too-cozy antidote for anything too cloying and overly sweet during the season of family cheer.

I cannot subject myself to a main character this annoying I’m sorry. This feels like a murder mystery for millennial white women whose favorite book is acotar and power to you give the book a shot if that’s you, but I’m so not that target audience.

Update: I decided to go back and read the epilogue—the killer is exactly who you think it will be.

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK/One More Chapter for providing an ARC of 12 Ways to Kill Your Family at Christmas by Natasha Bache in exchange for honest feedback.

Unfortunately this one just did not hit for me. I struggled with connecting to the FMC...or any of the characters to be honest. I was obviously expecting a rich people cozy murder mystery, but this one was a bit more beyond that. As the murders took place, no one seemed to be affected by them in any way. It was simply business as usual. Also, I didn't love the unrealistic way that everyone continued to stay in the house, despite murders occurring there on a daily basis. This was just a bit too far-fetched for me.

While the writing style was smooth and there were some funny points, I just did not find myself excited to keep going. What should have taken me 2 days to get through, dragged out to a full week. And to add to that, the ending left me disappointed.

Mood/Seasonal Reading: Christmas, of course!

I had a blast with this one, especially at the start. I love these kind of set ups so I knew I had high hopes for it. Plus, any book with a golden retriever in it gets extra points from me.

I flew through it for the first half. I found it dove right in excellently. I did find myself a little less excited as the killings continued dye to the fact that most of our possible killers continued to decreased. This made for a rather easy reveal to guess. Nonetheless, I think it delivered a decent enough punch. I was satisfied for the most part with the book as a whole. It gets a full 5 stars for how excited it made me feel and for its Christmas setting.

While it didn’t fully top the Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone series for me, it was a great Christmas ride.

Being generous with this one cause overall I just had a blast with it.

Well this was a fun read and perfect to get me into the Christmas spirit! A seasonal murder mystery, with dark humour and a cast of characters that are really quite unlikeable! It’s definitely tongue in cheek and doesn’t take itself too seriously, which I really liked.

Olivia our MC, along with her husband Miles and their kids Martha and Callum are moving to Australia (to get as far away from her in-laws as possible most likely), so she just has to put up with them for one final festive season. When that festive season spans a couple of weeks and your in-laws and extended family are truly horrible, then it’s not a Christmas that Olivia is looking forward to. However, when the family members all start dropping like flies, we are left wondering who is killing them off one by one? I was guessing away, but then that person would be killed and I’d be left back at square one wondering who the heck the murderer was! It’s cleverly plotted and leads you down quite a few wrong paths.

Funny, engrossing, witty and well written. I really enjoyed it.

This mystery is a dark comedy about a deadly family gathering. Olivia is resigned to spending the Christmas holidays with her husband, Miles' family, but knowing they'll soon be moving to Australia for a fresh start helps her to deal with it. His upper-class family has never been welcoming to her, judging her for her working-class background and finding fault with everything she does. It gets worse when a snowstorm keeps them snowed in with a killer!

In addition to Olivia's narration, there are passes from an unidentified person who is clearly the killer. I kept changing my mind about who the killer was because my suspects kept getting killed! The body count keeps increasing and Miles' family, especially his mother, gives many reasons to despise them, but someone starts killing them one-by-one and makes up little rhymes about the killings in a journal. I found the story to be engaging and entertaining and was surprised when the truth came out at the end, in spite of some clues that were there. I still had questions about a couple things at the end, but I still enjoyed the book.

I received an advance copy of this ebook from One More Chapter, HarperCollins UK, and NetGalley for review consideration. My review is voluntary and unbiased.

🖤 Bookish Thoughts
I really wanted to love this one but it did not quite work for me. The pacing felt slow and I struggled to stay engaged through much of the book. Most of the characters were difficult to connect with except for the dog who ended up being my favorite. That said the ending landed well. The twist was enjoyable even if a little predictable by the final chapters.

🔪 What to Expect
• Murder mystery
• Dark humor
• Dysfunctional family
• Country house setting
• Forced proximity
• Multiple murders

Do you love white lotus ✅ Do you love knives out ✅ If you answered yes to both previous questions like myself, then this book could be for you! 😂

We have a Christmas dinner with the in-laws, whom we hate. We have an extreme weather trope, a snow storm cutting you off from outside help, and we have a slasher style murder mystery where the bodies just keep coming.

I feel like I don’t need to sell this book to you, it sells itself 😂these are all my favourite tropes especially for the winter season and this book just packs a punch to get you through those gloomy weather days where there’s nothing to do but stay at home and devour a good book.

I thought this was funny, amusing, tense, suspenseful.. I liked the FMC and rooted for her. This is a new author to me and one I will definitely try again.

interesting read. Reminds me of Knives Out.

I was able to ferret out the murderer rather quickly, but not the motive - until it's explained at the very end.

I saw somewhere that it's a cozy... No Its not. It is a mystery and and interesting one at that.

Literally one of the most boring books i have ever read!
This is basically just And Then There Were None By Agatha Christie but just set over Christmas. The characters were insufferable, entitled rich people that quite honestly deserved to be murdered.

Disappointed with the ending and wasn’t worth the 341 pages.

It starts off a little slow as the family dynamics and chaos come together, but once the pieces start connecting, it becomes a full-blown murder mystery party gone wrong (in the best way possible). A snowstorm traps a delightfully dysfunctional family in a country house, and soon the bodies start dropping faster than Christmas ornaments.
I found myself laughing out loud more than once and double-checking if it was meant to be satire, which, thankfully, it is. There’s a fantastic balance of sharp humor, biting family tension, and genuine suspense in a way that feels both ridiculous and relatable.
It’s not perfect—some scenes feel rushed, and a few characters are larger than life (in the most dramatic holiday way), but the chaos wins out over the flaws, and it’s the perfect pick for a cozy, murder-filled snowy night.

12 Ways To Kill Your Family At Christmas by Natasha batch, when Olivia Miles and their twins Martha and Callum set out to the country estate of her in-laws the wises she thinks the most she’ll have to endure is boring evenings family games and snide comments about her writing career But sadly she’s wrong. If only she can survive the trip she’ll be off to Sunny beaches in a relaxing life in Australia. Soon after arriving they start in on the books she writes snied comments about her porn her husband‘s job and when her brother-in-law Tristan his wife Mimi and their twins BBNCC show up they’re dysfunction only makes it worse. when it becomes a holiday of death the first one to go is George Miles dad. when the will is red right after making Tristan and Mimi executors of the will not that Olivia really cares because the will has more rules than monopoly and she is long ago quit caring about the millions of dollars she may or may not get depending on her favor with Jeannie wise her mother-in-law. unfortunately George is just the first of many and while Jeannie insists on continuing the holiday the others or getting increasingly nervous as they go from one and two dead relatives to ultimately 10. As if this wasn’t bad enough Olivia may even be the one blamed for the murders. I always judge most books on how it ended and this was such a great mic drop of an ending I loved it this book was great it was funny so good so so good. A very funny read! #NetGalley, #TheBlindReviewer, #MyHonestReview, #12WaysToKillYourFamilyAtChristmas,#NatashaBatch,
