Heartbreaking and tender

Grandmothers are typically represented as sweet and warm, the kind of people who give great hugs and love you no matter what. In this story, Tessa, a college sophomore, and Esther, her grandmother take center stage. In Tessa’s mind, Esther has always been the exact opposite of the typical grandmother—strict, demanding, and rigid, with a set of rules from an era long gone by. Their relationship has been strained for many years, to the point of not talking. Now that Esther has Alzheimer’s and is in a nursing home, Tessa has the chance to make amends, if she can get past her resistance. But Esther doesn’t make it easy, and when she reveals a shocking secret, Tessa must examine a past of betrayal and rejection to finally come to the truth.

Pamela Raleigh uses the backdrop of sunny Florida with its swaying palms and blue skies to cushion the pain and harshness that comes with remembering the past. Esther’s memories of childhood, of her dreams to make a mark in the world, of her marriage, are beautiful renderings of the kaleidoscope of life. Each one has its own charm, its own beauty, its own regrets. Tessa counterbalances those memories with her youthful energy as she comes to grips with her future. But the wonder of this book comes from the melding of the two perspectives as both Tessa—frustrated and disappointed with her grandmother’s behavior—and Esther—not ready to relinquish her previous patterns—use their charm bracelets to try to reconnect and discover what’s important before it’s too late.

Dementia is a painful disease, for both the patient and the family. Seeing Esther go through the agony of memory loss and garbled speech is heartbreaking. But the tender moments, the tiny breakthroughs, compassion, and love sprinkled throughout help to offset the pain.

The Memory Bracelet is an often harrowing but impressive look at damaged relationships and the effort it takes to repair them. Whether or not you have someone in your life with dementia, this story will capture your heart.

A charm bracelet holds a lifetime of memories for Esther Wilde. Her college-aged granddaughter, Tessa, tries to break free from her grandmother’s expectations and well-meaning guidance. Set in Florida, this tale of Southern charm will delight your senses and explore the challenges faced by women of previous generations. When Tessa’s mother pressures her to visit her grandmother, now suffering from dementia, Tessa begins to unravel the stories behind the charms her grandmother has collected over a lifetime, including a long-held secret involving Tessa and her parents. The Memory Bracelet is a story about expectations and discovering our passions. Thanks to “Camera Boy,” a young man Tessa bumps into on a college campus path, Tessa’s perspective broadens and matures as she engages with her college friends, her mother, and her grandmother. I especially recommend this book to those living with a relative suffering from dementia, as it educates with concrete examples and compassionate understanding.

If you live for heartwarming drama, you’re going to love this book! The story centers around elderly Esther’s charm bracelet, the “memory keeper” of the major events of her life that have become obscured by the fog of Alzheimer’s. Tessa, Esther’s well-intentioned but understandably frustrated granddaughter, is now tasked with decoding her grandmother’s unreliable memories. As the two of them thread their way through their shared family history, long-kept secrets come to light. While the pain of these repressed memories is inevitable, healing hovers on the horizon—as long as everyone involved is willing to do the work. A truly worthwhile read that will redeem your faith in human nature!

Exceptional portrayal of Alzheimer's

A sweet story but more importantly, a guide to Alzheimer's. Of all the Alzheimer's books available, I have read none so personalized to the perspective of the patient. This is clearly an education to what and how the Alzheimer's patient feels, how they think, how they convey themselves. I have a better understanding, and thus, a better plan for moving forward with my spouse. Thank you for a VERY IMPORTANT grasp of fundamental interaction with Alzheimer's patients.

Despite the strained relationship between Tessa and her grandmother Esther, this story is full of love, regret, and longings. It portrays the depth of family connections and shows the reader how family is not always tied by blood.
Memories are made throughout life and sometimes we mark them with one small charm at a time linked together by a memory bracelet. A lovely story.

A heartbreaking yet tender story. I’m a sucker for novels with grandmother/granddaughter relationships especially when a piece of jewelry is involved. I was glued to the page, engrossed in the story with Raleigh’s wonderful cast of characters and found myself picking up the book and reading long before the sun came up.

This book pulled me in from the first page. Tessa’s struggle with her grandmother’s fading memories felt so raw. I cried in parts, but by the end, I felt a deep sense of peace. A powerful exploration of love and forgiveness.

what a poignant book

This book has many layers of depth, pain, misunderstanding and sadness, but it is all resolved well. There is also a good example of how alzheimer’s disease affects a person that I founf profoundly poignant.

Aging the whole story

This book really lays open the affects of dementia and Alzheimer’s not is a bad way but an open way to understand.
Not a bad read reminds everyone to ask question about special things important to the older generation. Some surprises.

This book masterfully tells the story of a granddaughter and her grandmother with Alzheimer's, whose relationship is transformed by a single, mysterious bracelet. As they decode the secrets held within each charm, they uncover a hidden family history, confront old wounds, and find a profound sense of healing. It’s a powerful reminder that even as memories disappear, the bonds of love and family remain.
