The Eisner-Award winning team of LARK and RUCKA return with the FIRST ISSUE of their final series about Forever Carlyle!
In a neo-feudalist world ruled by the ultra wealthy Families, each has a Lazarus, raised and trained to be the instrument of that Family’s will. Finally free of her father’s control, Forever is going to burn it all down.
Greg Rucka, is an American comic book writer and novelist, known for his work on such comics as Action Comics, Batwoman: Detective Comics, and the miniseries Superman: World of New Krypton for DC Comics, and for novels such as his Queen & Country series.
Ok, so we may get a conclusion to the Lazarus storyline! Very cool. Except. I don't like that this is labeled #1, simply because there is just a TON of backstory you need to really understand what's going on. You're Welcome.
It goes through about a year of the Carlyle Family looking for the fugitive Lazarus clones, picking up after they made their big escape. Forever and Forever 2.0 are still in hiding, and that's about all we learn. I wish there had been a bit more meat to it, and I hope the final issues will make it worth the wait. But I'm looking forward to seeing how this all ends.
Also, skip his column at the end unless you enjoy listening to someone who sounds like they might be having a mental health meltdown over politics. People feel powerless, so I'm sure that he meant well. And he did put up a disclaimer that you should stop reading if you don't like to mix comics and politics, but it was one of those can't-look-away-trainwreck kind of rants. And that made me feel so sad for him. I'm not saying he's wrong, but for me, it was like listening to someone scream at the sky god in their underwear.
I liked this first issue... But the writer Greg Rucka is certifiably insane! His Forever Yours column at the end is unhinged MSNBC corporate backed talking points.
Listen, I'm no fan of Orange Man, but Rucka has a very very very serious case of TDS! Dude is simping for that "Maryland Man," Kilmar Abrego Garcia... when ((all politics aside)) it's been proven that "Nice Dad" is a wife beating criminal who entered the country illegally. Rucka needs serious help!!!
If you're going into this blind, it's still accessible, but I highly recommend tracking down the full run of what came before as there are nuances in this issue that hit harder because of that knowledge. You're wallet may question this, but your quest to seek light in the darkness will not.
*Spoilers below*
The projected final 20 issues telling the story of a chosen daughter, Forever Carlyle, who was the fist of the family's military arm, now has gone rogue and slipped the noose., A world-wide hunt begins as the fate of the Carlyle family hangs on a knifes-edge, and world shaking events begin here.
The comic and the story are great, and I eagerly await the next 19 issues, but the author got unnecessarily preachy and dramatic at the end. I don't like being told what to think under the threat of annihilation and damnation. Reminds me of the doomerism of the Catholic Church.
