“A man who gave her books was a man who knew the way into her heart.”
I need to blurt this out: Readers will love Kiernan Shanahan! Of all the leading men in the Matchmaker series to date, Kiernan Shanahan, Riley Rafferty and Sullivan O’Brien, Kiernan is my favourite. Is it because he leaves books on Alannah’s pillow? Maybe!
Should you read this just to figure out why Kiernan is so beloved? Sure, but you’ll also see the four reasons why I love a Jody Hedlund book.
Firstly, Hedlund inspires readers with her faith thread. In this case, it’s lessons about prayer and righteousness. With so much happening that could derail them, Alannah Darragh and Kiernan Shanahan stand up against wrongdoing. Taking the harder route means danger and hardship for them and all they love, but readers see the value and reward in doing the right thing. Hedlund spotlights the chasm between how we think prayers should be answered and how God answers, reminding us that He knows best.
Secondly, Hedlund educates us about the historical events in her setting. I learned about the rebuilding after the Great St. Louis Fire, the resulting need for brickworks and glassworks factories, and the cholera outbreak. By painting a full picture of her setting, and paying attention to details that make it authentic, readers aren’t dragged out of the world she’s created.
Thirdly, Hedlund always pays special attention to the social conventions and presents an authentic setting. She knows the controversy that would arise if Kiernan and Alannah were to become too friendly or seen together unsupervised. Hedlund’s attention to authentic dialogue also adds to the grounding of her story.
Lastly, Hedlund’s characters are always internally consistent and yet she crafts them to be capable of surprising readers. She’s mastered the art of crafting fully realized characters and imbuing them with the perfect measure of chemistry. I’ve loved following Bellamy McKenna and his influence on the Shanahan family! I hope Hedlund isn’t finished with this series.
You’ll get more than you bargained for in this series. You must put it on your radar.

Delightful! The sparks from book one in the series have returned.
Alannah doesn't much like St Louis and plans to return to Ireland. She's just trying to get by until that can happen. Alannah dreams of being an editor, but is happy enough serving as a maid for the Shanahan family.
Kiernan Shanahan has big dreams of success and sees a woman with a nice dowry as a good way to compliment his plans. Although this may sound harsh, Kiernan has a good heart and takes care of his employees and helps protect Alannah and her brother Tobin from a gang.
What I loved about this novel...Alannah, Kiernan, Irish brogue, banter, historical details and matchmaker Bellamy. Delighted that there is one more novel in the series to come.

The Shanahan Match series is one of my favorites by this author! The swoony, tension filled romance of this series continues with this third book. With the set up of the eldest Shanahan brother and an ordinary Irish immigrant turned maid in his family home, you know that there will be plenty of reasons that these two characters would not be expected to end up together. However, the charming local matchmaker, Bellamy, sees something that others miss.
I loved that Kiernan and Alannah fought their attraction to each other, yet were both continually drawn together. Kiernan was determined to keep Alannah safe from a very real threat. By becoming her protector and spending time with her, these two really began to learn more about each other. They truly fell in love with each other as they shared their hopes and dreams every evening.
The sizzling chemistry between the two added lots of great tension as they both resisted the pull to each other. However, I loved the moment that Kiernan realized that he was all in for Alannah and did not want a society wife after all. He had an uphill battle ahead of him trying to convince Alannah that she was truly the woman he loved!

“Maybe you’re expecting God to answer your prayers the way you think He should when He’s actually answering the way He knows is best.”
Ohhhhhhhh y’all. A Wager with the Matchmaker is classic Jody Hedlund romance and I loved every minute of reading this swoony book! We’ve seen Bellamy McKenna match two of Kiernan Shanahan’s sisters with forever-loves, and now it’s Kiernan’s turn. Hedlund set the stage for his story – and his match – at the end of the previous book so I was eager to see how she wove it all together. Because the match Bellamy has in mind for Kiernan comes with her own set of challenges, and an uphill climb to be accepted as an appropriate match for a affluent businessman from an established society family. And when this author is at the helm of a romance with a difficult road to happily-ever-after, you know there’s going to be some delicious tension and kisses sizzling with repressed passion (while staying chaste). Wow! Did she ever deliver those!! I’m still fanning.
Bless Kiernan’s heart, he has a list of all the requirements he has for a bride – things like ‘from a wealthy family’, ‘a St. Louis native’, ‘a substantial dowry’, ‘able to navigate society’s expectations’, etc. Yet the woman he’s increasingly drawn to is the exact opposite of everything on that list. Alannah Darragh is an impoverished immigrant and – even more significantly – a maid in the Shanahan household. Granted, that last one is his own fault because he brought her there for protection from the Irish gang leader who has her in his sights. But to say a marriage between them is unlikely would be an understatement. Enter the matchmaker who has more than proven in this series that he’s willing to go to clever lengths to facilitate the right matches. And Bellamy’s wilyness is on full display in his machinations to help Kiernan see that Alannah IS his best match. I delighted in the wagers that he puts into place with each of them – it’s always fun when readers are in on the secrets that the characters don’t yet know, especially when a Hedlund-driven romance is the end result. (Side note: I’m so happy that Bellamy gets his own story next!)
I loved Kiernan and Alannah as individual characters – they each are people I would want to spend time with in real life (assuming I could speak coherently in Kiernan’s swoony presence lol). But oh I adored them together – first as friends (albeit friends who are deeply attracted to each other and fighting it) and then as people in love. Their late night talks – you’ll love the setup & setting for these – are such special scenes that spark with affectionate humor, meaningful conversations, and of course yummy romantic tension. Until the kissing started, these were my very favorite scenes in the story. And then, well… have mercy, the passion between these two is just perfection so keep a fan handy and remind yourself to breathe. But even more than being in a swoon-induced puddle, the tenderness and even gratefulness that shares space with that passion brought tears to my eyes for its exquisite sweetness. (And don’t let the word ‘passion’ scare you – they are sizzling kisses but kisses only.)
Bottom Line: A Wager with the Matchmaker is Jody Hedlund at her best. Kiernan and Alannah are compelling, layered, and likable characters, and readers will be cheering for them to find their happily-ever-after together. I easily immersed myself in this novel, lost to everything else until I’d finished the final word and even then I simply sat with it for a few moments, unwilling just yet to leave the glow of a story well told. The obstacles in their path gave the plot just enough sharp edges to deepen the character growth without distracting from why we’re all here – the swoonilicious romance that Hedlund so excels at. And after the foreshadowing we’re given at the end of this one, I am so eager to read the final book too (though I wish there were at least a dozen more). If you’re looking for a story that combines subtle-but-meaningful faith themes, compelling history, engaging characters, and sizzling kisses-only romance, look no further than A Wager with the Matchmaker!

The wonderful A Shanahan Match series continues with this captivating historical romance story. The well-paced, skillfully planned plot--combining light, humorous moments and serious, dangerous ones--grabbed my attention instantly and kept me reading expectantly to the end. The impact of the story is enhanced by an impressive lineup of well-crafted, unforgettable characters with whom I easily formed emotional connections. Allanah and Kiernan's challenging romance adds an interesting and touching layer to the story. Vivid descriptions of pivotal historical events, including the aftermath of the Great St. Louis fire of 1849 and a devastating cholera epidemic, create a dramatic, authentic backdrop for the story. I totally enjoyed this story and highly recommend it and the series.

The short summary is Alannah catches the eye of a gang leader hellbent on making her brother pay for leaving his gang. The price is her or he kills her brother.
Kiernan, her brother’s employer, hears of the trouble and helps her hide at his family’s country estate and her brother at his new brickyard.
But she can only hide for so long, the only solution to keep her safe - marriage, and Bellamy the matchmaker knows the perfect man who is also looking for a match.
Can the two fall in love with such social classes and dangers gangs pulling them apart?
This book is so good! Jody Hedlund does a fantastic job of creating convincing characters and setting beautiful scenes - without overloading you with details. I have loved all of her books, but this match making series is particularly good one! Though it is a Christian book, there is much less of a focus on spiritual things in this book - so even nonbelievers can enjoy the thrilling love story of Kiernan and Alannah.

A Wager with the Matchmaker is a swoony, heart-stopping addition to Jody Hedlund’s A Shanahan Match series! I enjoyed the characterization; even though the story takes place in 1840s St. Louis, the characters and their struggles are relatable. Plus, the chemistry between Alannah and Kiernan is off the charts.
I always enjoy Hedlund’s books, and I absolutely can’t wait for Bellamy’s story! 4.5/5 stars

These Shanahan Match books have quickly become some of my favorites! I love the cleverness of the series and the matchmaker. I love the characters and the Shanahan siblings! I love the matches and the sweet love stories. This third book was no exception! I was hooked and didn't want to set it down at all. But alas, there were moments that I had to because life was calling. But you better believe that during my reading time, I was thoroughly enjoying ever moment that I had to be immersed within the pages of this book! I didn't want it to end but I am definitely looking forward to the next book.
I will tell you that you could read these as standalone novels, but I would highly recommend, and even urge you to read them in order. Everything flows together and builds and you get to know the main characters for each book throughout all of the books. Especially Bellamy. I CANNOT WAIT FOR HIS BOOK!!!! Just saying!
I loved that this book is about Alannah and Kiernan. Their story was set up near the end of the previous book, and can I just say that this is one of those books that you just release a happy sigh for while you're reading and when you've finished. It just made my heart so happy! I smiled. I laughed out loud. I giggled. I held my breath. I cheered out loud. And I told one character in particular that they needed to be getting on with things. Hahaha! If you've read the series (and especially when you read this one) you might be able to guess what character I'm referring to. I can't wait for that character's story!!!! There's a hint for ya!
As I'm writing my review and thinking back over this book and all of the scenes, especially the ones that I love, I want to go pick up my copy again and read it over and over again!
The wagers were fantastic!!! Hahaha! I love when the main characters don't know what the reader knows and so we're sitting back reading and having a lark over what they don't know and can't wait for them to come to a knowledge of what we know. It's so much fun in this book! There's a certain matchmaker who was definitely laughing all the way to the bank over these two!
I loved the late night talks, the book references and talks, the early morning meetings, the longing glances, the feeling of unrequited love, the gazebo, the reveal, the protection, the friendship and buildup of love. Oh my heart!!! I loved it all!!! If you think I'm gushing, well, you'd be right! Because I am! That's just how I feel about this book. I want to gush about it and tell everyone to read it because I loved it! I hope if you do decide to pick it up that you enjoy as well!!!
Now I am going to patiently wait for the next book to be written and released because it is definitely going to be worth it!

I absolutely love this series! Jody Hedlund can sure write some romance. The book is clean, but oh so sweet and passionate. I loved the characters and rooted for them all throughout the novel. It is a bit of a Cinderella story with the main female character being a maid, and the main male character a rich man of standing in St. Louis. With gangs, cholera, and snooty upper crust characters, this book had alot of layers and it all blended so well to make a wonderful story with a very happily ever after ending. I definitely hope there will be more in the series!

I was a little disappointed with this book. While the premise was promising, the writing style was such that nearly every conversation was broken up by long stretches of internal dialog. The internal monologs were full of back and forth, yes-wait, I mean-no kind of thoughts that got old after a while. And the lessons learned were learned as soon as someone else said them. For example, at one point, Alannah's brother makes an observation about something, and Alannah's internal dialog immediately says, "Oh, he's probably right. I should change my ways." But the epiphany didn't feel earned at all, making the moment seem trite.
The relationship didn't work for me either. We are told many, many times that Alannah is beautiful. Like, REALLY beautiful. Fair enough. Beautiful women exist. But it kind of felt like that was the main reason for Kiernan's attraction. His internal dialog was often about how beautiful she was, the curve of her calf, the shapeliness of her figure, the pucker of her lips. Occasionally, he would say she was also interesting and kind and, oh my goodness, she had opinions! Better marry her right away. How unique she is to be a woman with opinions! We are told they spend a lot of time together talking about books and things, but we only get brief recaps of these conversations and seldom more. I didn't think this was enough to build a convincing relationship. The detailed, passionate, earth- shattering, and life-changing kisses they exchange don't have any meaning if I'm not convinced of their relationship in the first place. My love language is quality time, though, so that undoubtedly colors my opinion on this topic.
And finally, I couldn't understand why everyone was so convinced that the bad guy, a violent gang member, accustomed to taking what he wants, would honor the bounds of marriage and leave Alannah alone once she'd tied the knot. And this is never addressed after she's married. We are told he will leave her alone if she's married, hence the haste to have her so. Then Alannah finally gets married, and HEA. What bad guy? You're married; you're safe now. The end.
But, don't think it was all bad. If passionate kissing scenes are more your thing than conversations - and no shade of they are - you might like this one. Also, the plot to save Alannah's brother was creative and done fairly well. Bellamy was appropriately enigmatic. He was probably my favorite character.
All in all, not a book for me, but I can see how someone else might love it.

I have been a fan of Jody Hedlund's books for many years. This is one of my favorite series that she has written. I have found Bellamy the matchmaker delightful and the Shanahan family heartwarming. Each book in the series can be read as a standalone, but it is nice to read the books in order to have the complete backstory. Ms. Hedlund skillfully foreshadowed Kiernan and Allanah's story in the previous book. I was delighted to find that Kiernan was finally going to get his story. As he handed his list of requirements for a match to Bellamy, he found himself agreeing to a wager by the matchmaker.
Bellamy had a curious knack of prodding his unsuspecting clients into a direction they would not have picked for themselves. In A Wager with the Matchmaker, he makes a wager with both Kiernan and Allanah. While Allanah is not interested in a match at all, Kiernan's prospective list of qualities in a future wife don't coincide with the direction of his heart. While I anticipated the ending, I LOVED reading the way they would get their happy ever after. Ms. Hedlund writes clean romance, but those kisses practically sizzle off the page.
The historical detail of the cholera epidemic and the fire in St. Louis in the 1840's provide an atmospheric backdrop of the early days of St. Louis. This is a wonderful story of learning to relinquish control and rely on God to provide wisdom and direction for one's life.

Bellamy McKenna strikes another match. This time Kiernan Shanahan is the target of his expertise. This was a peek at the Irish immigrant life in St. Louis in 1849. I learned a lot about the Irish who came to America and made a real go of it. Kiernan tries to prove himself a businessman but the bad element of society wanted to see him fail. Lots of interesting facts about brickmaking and the need for safe building materials after the great fire. I can attest to lots of brick buildings in St. Louis, having lived there for 20 years.
The characters were well drawn. Alannah wanted to be near her brother and live peacefully but a bully had other ideas. Clever Bellamy wagered that she would fall in love. A favorite character was Zaira who saw Alannah as a friend and not merely a maid. And I loved when Kiernan gifted Alannah with the books.
Ms. Hedlund brings together a caring hero, a skittish heroine, danger to mix things up, and a faith thread that shows the characters doing their best to honor God.

I really enjoyed this third book in the series and am hoping there will be more stories to come for the matchmaker! He was one of my favorite characters throughout the series!
The romance was sweet and the kisses I couldn't get enough of. Probably some of my favorite kissing scenes ever have been from book two and three in this series.
I enjoyed the action and the character's storylines. I especially loved the scene in the rain, that was such a sweet moment.

Jody Hedlund never disappoints and this book is no exception. The is the third book of A Shanahan Match series. They can be read separately but I feel that they would be enjoyed better if read in order. I love Bellamy the matchmaker in these stories and how he is always correct in his matches. This novel has great history of St. Louis in the 1800s.
I love the developing relationship between Alannah and Kiernan. From the start of the novel he wants to help protect and guard Alannah from the cruelties of society and the dangerous gangs that her family has involved themselves with. She is a strong character who is willing to sacrifice herself for those she loves. They struggle with their feelings and developing relationship while dealing with the schemes and trials that come their way.
Love conquers all and the matchmaker knows best 😉 I can’t wait to read Bellamy’s story- he has schemed and worked so hard for the successes that he has been involved in!

As much as I love this author and the world this story takes place in, I found this particular book to be lacking. One thing I loved about the first book was its discussion on recovering from guilt and trauma. The main character felt guilt and then, on top of that, felt guilt for feeling guilty because she knew how well she had it compared to those who suffered. It discovered fears of inadequacy and choosing the wrong path. It tackled choosing the right vocation and feeling conflicted between two paths. It tackled a little bit of politics and historical events. It discussed class injustices, immigration, social outreach, illness, chastity, choice, past relationships, and forging a new path. All of this was done while maintaining a great and wonderful romance that had me genuinely hoping for the characters. Now that I have fan-girled about the first book in the series (don't get me wrong, it wasn't perfect i have some qualms, but those are for another day), its complaint time. This book, although it tackled class injustices slightly, it still felt very skimmed over. The struggle the MFC would face within these social circles just wasn't really discussed enough, in my opinion. She obviously struggles with it internally, but by the end, it's skimmed over and not really discussed with the MMC or any other cahracter. I felt like there were brief mentions of feminism and having a career and passions outside of traditional societal roles, but then it immediately changed the topic. In my opinion, a man who has grown up being taught that women stay at home and men get to be in charge is not going to change his mind after one conversation that didn't even directly call him out. The character was rarely super introspective about his semi toxic masculinity or the role his wealth would play in their relationship, but would randomly be like, 'You know what. I was wrong. My bad guys, let me just real quick change my entire perspective because I have very few values set in stone. ' I understand wanting to start a story with a character who didn't nessassrilly see his wealth, his nepotism, his power over his employees, or his general role as a man within a patriarchal society. I understand that its not marketable to have a character who fights these ideas at first, but it's realistic, and I wish the author had explored this more. It would have been amazing to see a friend, family member, or even the love interest slowly convince him of the complexity of class structure and of women in general. My third complaint is that his family is won over too quickly. The MMC's mother goes from basically believing she is an insignificant pest that has seduced her son too, supporting their marriage. There is a plot point being formed for much of the book displaying the opposition his mother has towards the FMC, but when we finally come to have the conflict the mother makes a 180 in 2 seconds flat. Whats worse is we spend time convincing the father who has shown almost no qualms with the FMC (mostly because he wasn't really there), but as soon as the father agrees the mother just doesn't have opinions beyond gracious agreeing ones. Even worse than this is that in the previous two books, the mother is rarely shown as a servant hating, class elitist. Like why even make her a hater all of a sudden, if you were just going to carve away her opinion as soon as the male character (her husband) hops on board. My next complaint is about historical setting. So often discussion of a bad cholera outbreak is brought up, but we dont see any real consequences our characters face, other then certain family members from previous books being absent (which if I'm being honest felt like lazy writing). The only time cholera effects them is when it fits into the greater story, such as when it negatively effects the city's economy and purchasing power. Much of the historical conflict that was occurring in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1849, was gone in this book, and it left the pages feeling empty. If you are going to set our world up so that it is full of converging events in the first two books, why not progress, elaborate, or at least utilize them to better the world. The fire in 1849 thay destroyed much of St. Louis is such a good event to continue this plot line from, but it felt so lacking. I understand that our main character is going to take advantage of the situation, but I never felt like we ever truly discussed the loss or recovery the city was facing. At every turn, people were just gone because of the cholera outbreak and therefore not dealing with the fire. But let's be real here, ONLY THE RICH CAN DO THIS. I understand that we are dealing with an MMC of wealth, and that's his world, but our FMC isn't. You are telling me she formed no friendships or relationships outside of the MMC and his family (besides her brother, but he is literally a man to). You are telling me she did not make a single friend while living in the slums. She doesn't make friends with staff at both her previous and current place of work. It makes her feel so one-dimensional and male centered. I really hate to be that person who is complaining because of a book not being feminist enough, but in this case, it actually felt so severely harmful to the story and the characters I loved. A woman in her case who has survived so much is not going to be this weak. I don't like that she is simultaneously portrayed as vulnerable, but then it's also ok for him to be almost taking advantage of that vulnerability. So much of the time, he was worried about taking advantage of her, so I was slightly unfair, but I still find something wrong with the evolution of their relationships in some cases. So much more of the FMC's character could have been flushed out. We could have discussed how she came back to her faith. How she lost hope in God but regained it even in times of more distress. The weirdest thing was thatvwe knew she had walked away form Faith and came back, however within the book she still deeply struggles with resentment towards God. I think that is something peoppe in the process of converting their heart back to God could relate to. I wish we had been able to understand her relationship and resentmetn towards the Lord just a little more. My last complaint is again about character development. The MMC should have taken longer to change his mind on certain issues. He should have been able to explore the negative behaviors caused by pressure from his father. So often, we see him compare and compete in his mind with his father, but we don't see his actual healing. We do have a moment where he says 'wow maybe I dont need to be in competition with him', but we never see that gradual understanding of the toxicity of the way he views success. If I'm being frank, I wish about 100 pages were cut from the book and just replaced. It's not that there were lulls while reading because I read this is a day. It's more that there were times when I could see what was trying to be conveyed, but I didn't feel it. So many important themes were mentioned in this book, and it they had been able to shine just a little more. I think this book could have been just as good as the first one. I love Jody Hedlund as an author. I loved her orphan train series, and I loved the first two books of this series and I want to see more from this one, but this book had potential that just wasn't used.

I always know I will enjoy a book by Jody Hedlund, and A Wager With The Matchmaker didn't disappoint! If you are looking for a Christian Fiction/Historical Fiction book with plenty of passion and sizzle while remaining clean this is the book for you! Jody Hedlund does a fabulous job of incorporating the Christian faith and growth of her characters and setting the scene for the historical events occurring throughout the story. For A Wager With The Matchmaker, Hedlund set the stage for the MMC Kiernan Shanahan's story in the previous book of the A Shanahan Match series. From the little glimpse into Kiernan's story that was shared in book two of the series, I knew that his story would be one that would capture my attention and interest. I was right!
Kiernan Shanahan has his own opinion of the type of woman that would make a perfect bride for him. Some of the things included in his list of requirements include substantial dowry, ability to host societal gatherings, and being someone from St. Louis. He gives his list to matchmaker Bellamy in the hopes that the matchmaker could help him locate his perfect bride. Little does Kiernan know that the match Bellamy will choose will completely differ from Kiernan's requirements but perfectly matches the woman that Kiernan will need in his life. That woman is one who happens to be right under Kiernan's nose; Alannah Darragh, an immigrant who happens to be working as a maid within the Shanahan household. Thanks to Kiernan, Alannah was able to become not only employed within the Shanahan household, but also helped her escape the unwanted attentions of an Irish gang leader. While she is safe for the time being, her brother Torin has sought out the matchmaker to find a match that would help protect her future. While she views Kiernan as a good man, and knows that the lass who marries him will be lucky indeed, she knows that the two of them are worlds apart based on society's expectations. Would you be brave enough to make a wager with the Matchmaker? This book has danger, suspense, faith, amazing Irish characters, sizzling chemistry, and in true Jody Hedlund fashion swoony kisses.
Alannah is a hard worker, is concerned for her brother’s safety, loves to read, and has dreams for her future. I loved that she wasn’t afraid to give her opinion or stand up to Torin, Bellamy, or Kiernan. She really struggles with her feelings for Kiernan. Kiernan is determined to have a certain kind of match even though Bellamy tries to talk him out of it. He is kind and protective of Alannah. His battle with his feelings was palpable. I enjoyed their conversations and growing friendship. Their chemistry was fantastic!! Those kisses! 🔥🫠🔥
I absolutely loved that Torin was the one that helped Alannah to get her focus back on God, reminding her that He answers prayers the way He knows best rather than how she thinks He should.

So I've read 12 books by Jody Hedlund. After a while, you start to get a feel for an author. Some of her books I've rated 4 Stars and some 3 Stars. I don't think I've had a 5-star book from her yet, but she's been consistent. One of the things I like about her is that her books are clean, often Christian fiction, yet they don't deny physical attraction and longing. She can bring some yearning into her books. At the same time, the last three I've read by her (including this one), felt almost like a formula. They each felt either lacking in an area that I couldn't describe, or they felt rushed. I did miss the second book in the A Shanahan Match series. I hope to come back to read it eventually.

Unfortunately, that means his loved ones are in danger from the backlash of his trying to get away from this gang. Kieran is attracted to Alannah and wants to see her settled and protected. Of course, he doesn't immediately consider himself as an option for protecting her, even though he takes on the responsibility of finding her suitable work. Sometimes I'm all about forbidden love stories, and other times I'm frustrated with the characters for making poor choices. I found that I was unhappy with the characters choosing to spend time together alone in what would have been a compromising position had they been discovered. Yet. I wanted to root for them at the same time.

I have been a little frustrated with the last three books that I've read by her, yet I still plan to read more because I've read enough of her books to know what she's capable of writing. This is the third book I've read in this series, and I love all of them. It's wonderfully written with strong characters, great descriptions, powerful evoking of emotions, and exciting historical background. I enjoy how the author expertly invites you to keep reading with hooks at the end of each chapter. I love this series, and I look forward to the next book release.

I’ve yet to find a Jody Hedlund book I didn’t like, and this book was no different. I just really appreciate the way that this author writes romances with so much longing while also still keeping them closed door.
A Wager with the Matchmaker is book three in A Shanahan Match series. It can be read as a standalone, but I would recommend reading the books in order for the best experience. The first two books in the series follow two of the Shanahan daughters, but this third book follows their brother.
As with the other books in this series, I really appreciated Bellamy, who is the matchmaker. His parts always make me laugh, and I can’t wait until he gets his own story. In this book, he makes a wager with Kiernan Shanahan, a wealthy businessman who’s trying to live up to his father’s successes. Bellamy also makes a wager with Alannah Darragh, a maid that’s trying to hide from a dangerous man that’s determined to marry her. Both wagers are different, but they are ultimately that Bellamy will be able to find each one a match within a couple months’ time.
The character growth in this story was excellent. Kiernan starts off his search for a bride thinking he knows everything he wants in a future wife, but by the end, he realizes what’s really important in a spouse. Alannah, starts off determined to not get married anytime soon but is instead just wanting to have a good job that will allow her to save money to one day return to Ireland. Her world changes when things become more dangerous, and when she realizes that getting married is something that she might actually want sooner rather than later.
The sweetness of these characters and their romance really made me love this story. I loved their connection to each other with books, and I appreciated how they became friends before they ever became more. I also liked that they were both willing to sacrifice things to have the chance to be with each other.
There are some Christian faith elements throughout the story that I appreciated. It was cool to see these characters, especially Alannah, grow in their faith.
Overall, I would recommend this book if you want a sweet romance with some danger and depth.

Swooning romance, as author Jody Hedlund always delivers! I love that the author combines things I love in a book in a way that seems almost effortless! The characters are relatable, not perfect but admirable in many ways and very lovable, the romance is sizzling yet clean -kisses only-, lots of endearing romantic moments, there are always many obstacles in the main characters journey to HEA, there’s always character growth, a faith inspired message, and a battle to do God’s will above our human desires.
This is the third book in the “A Shanahan Match” Series and it’s Kiernan Shanahan’s turn at finding love. I love how Bellamy, the young matchmaker who takes after his dad in this unique profession, always manages to find the Shanahan siblings the best match. There is some fun and light banter in this process, yet the way he does it makes them learn something about themselves along with the surprise of “almost” unexpectedly finding their second half.
This story has a higher degree of difficulty in the match, being a forbidden love, where Kiernan is from the high society of St. Louis and Alannah is not only an impoverished immigrant from Ireland, but also works as a maid in HIS house. Even worse, Kiernan needs to make a wealthy match if he wants to make his brick factory survive this difficult time, so considering Alannah is completely out of question. Still, Kiernan can’t help feel responsible for Alannah, being the sister of one of his best employees, so he’s the one who gives her the job, as he sees no better option to keep her safe from a disgusting leery man who leads a shadowy gang and wants to make her his wife at all costs as a way of revenge to Alannah’s brother Torin who wronged him.
I loved Kiernan, he’s a wonderful and dreamy hero. His protectiveness of Alannah was endearing and the way they started a friendship -both resisting their growing attraction- which naturally led to deeper feelings, was sweet and very romantic. Some of my favorite parts were their nightly innocent meetings in the garden where they get to know each other.
Alannah is a great heroine too: she’s strong -having endured loss and hardship- yet sensible, with a big heart that loves fiercely. Her love of books made her even more relatable, and Kiernan gifting her books and leaving them on her pillow, just melted my bookish heart. A man who appreciates and supports his sweetheart in this endeavor is a man after my own heart. Sigh!
The plot is fast paced, with twists and action that keeps you glued to the story. I had a hard time putting it down and read it in a few days. The setting is so well described that it’s easy to picture the different scenes and places.
The faith inspired message was not subtle, yet not preachy. Like the way Alannah struggles to see God’s loving care when things have been so dire for her. Discovering that God’s divine will may not always match our rational human desires, doesn’t mean He doesn’t hear our prayers, but we have to understand that He sometimes answers our prayers in a different or unexpected way, because He knows what’s best for our soul. This was one of my favorite quotes: “Maybe you’re expecting God to answer your prayers the way you think He should when he's actually answering the way He knows best”. Trusting God’s ways is not always easy, yet when we abandon our fears and turn to His Unconditional Love, unexpected miracles happen, even if they’re small and not what we imagined or asked for.
Another great thing of this book is getting an insight to the next book, which I was happy to discover that Bellamy -and Zaira- will have their very own HEA too!
I highly recommend this book. It can be read as a standalone, but I vividly recommend to read the series in order. You’ll just wish to visit with the Shanahan family as you get to know them and love them!

master pursuing relationship with servant. flirting with her in front of his disapproving mom and putting her into a very difficult situation that he knew would happen. special treatment because she was beautiful. she said no multiple times and he didn't listen. spent nights with her privately during her rare personal time, both in night clothes. many things in this book were red flags.
I enjoyed the romance, the writing was fantastic, great plot, but I felt weird about the power dynamic between servant and employer. I know the premise was that love didn't rely on status, but with her serving in his house made me uncomfortable. he spent time with her outside at night, was often alone with her, when word got out that he was flirting and interested and too close to his maid, it was true. if she was the servant in another house or worked in a shop, I'd feel a lot more comfortable. this is what leads to the whole employer taking advantage. they might both be attracted to each other, but to pursue a relationship while she's a maid in his house is still toxic, even if the writing tries to say otherwise. they were even physically intimate and seeing each other in their night clothes when they were still servant and master. that was issue with this book, and why I didn't rate it as high as her other matchmaker books
I know Allana was written to be quite and kind, but she felt bland. The only independent activity she seemed to choose was book editing, which got me excited because I thought it would lead to her finding a job and being released from being a maid THEN they could form a romantic relationship. Even if he thought he wasn't taking advantage, and they both felt attraction, the power dynamic of master with servant still left me uncomfortable and concerned both with what was happening with them and the message being sent. Defying status I'm all for, but for a servant and master still in employ, I didn't like. If she became an editor and moved out, I would have liked this more.
They also didn't really progress much, since they'd progress mentally then back track then progress then backtrack over and over again over the same issue, shall I be with him or shall I not. Zuko's character change of falling back then moving forward makes sense, but this one just didn't make all that much sense. It was as if every chapter went back and forth of if it's right or wrong to be in a relationship..I can't be with you, but oh you're gorgeous. It didn't really explore much of their relationship other then the physical. It hinted that maybe they got to know each other when she was reading, but it even says in there that usually he was just admiring her.
Both these characters didn't seem as flushed out and deep as earlier ones. Her character is self doubting and quite, his is authority yet kindness, but his kindness to her was due to her beauty. He was kind to everyone, but he was extra kind to her because of her main characteristics he enjoyed, she's gorgeous. I love Jody Hedlund, but this book left me uncomfortable with the obvious power dynamic. While they both felt attraction, that's often how these kind of power dynamic relationships start. 'i just love them so much, and they love me, what's wrong with having a secret romance?' this has lead to many betrayals, advantages, and eventually force. Even when she said no, he never listened. Several times she tried to distance herself and even verbally said no, but he continued. Put his foot in the door, sneak out to join her during her rare personal time, put her into very difficult situations by flirting with her in front of his mom. Of course she was concerned, her concern of them being in a relationship was true!
He was raised not to flirt with the staff because it's wrong to treat staff like that, not just class difference but taking advantage. That's exactly what he did though. While eventually she gave it to her attraction, he should have listened to her no's

What a fun story this was with all the feels, romance, and charm that you can expect to find in a Hedlund novel. I have really been enjoying the matchmaker stories, and I must say that the matchmaker, Bellamy has really grown on me. More on him later. This is brother Kiernan Shanahan's story. Since he is pretty much heir to his father's businesses, he wants the perfect match. One that looks good on paper, or so he thinks, but will this make him happy in life? I really felt for him as he tries so very hard to live up to the legend of his father and his mother's demands. Not that they are bad, they just have expectations for their children, especially for their son.
Now Alannah definitely does not match with the list that Kiernan has for a future wife. She is a servant and poor immigrant who is in danger just as much as her brother is from an unscrupulous gang leader who will stop at nothing to make her his out of revenge. Well, Kiernan who has a very soft spot for her will not allow that to happen. He takes her to his family's country home for safekeeping, or they all hope so.
In the meantime, wily Bellamy has been called in to make a match for both of them. Reading the other two books, Bellamy has a gift for matchmaking, except when it comes to himself. Unbeknownst to one another, both make a wager with Bellamy. To say I could not read fast enough as the events unfolded is an understatement. I started and finished this book in a day. Loved it, what can I say. And I am really looking forward to Bellamy's story in the next one. That should be quite a doozy when the matchmaker meets his match, finally.
Don't miss out on this whole series. Each book is full of toe-curling romance and undeniable faith to see the characters through.

Absolutely fantastic historical romance!
Alannah is in hiding as a maid for the Shanahan family after a gang leader threatens her family. The only problem with her position is that it is hard to ignore her growing attraction to Kiernan Shanahan when she is around him so often.
Kiernan protective feelings toward Alannah are growing into something more but he needs a bride with a dowry to keep his business afloat. When he employs the services as a matchmaker, the result is both something he desperately wants but knows he can never have.

Oh my swoon! I am IN LOVE with this entire series and Kiernan and Allanah's story was the perfect addition. I have been waiting anxiously for their story since the last book and it did NOT disappoint! I binged this book in one sitting because I could not put it down!
Loved the chemistry and attraction between Kiernan and Allanah but also loved that they had such a wonderful emotional connection from so many conversations together. Despite their different social classes, they have so much in common and watching the fall in love during all of their midnight picnics absolutely melted my heart!! And I can't write a review without mentioning that first kiss.... (insert all the fire emojis here!!!)
Loved the historical setting, the suspenseful moments, the endearing side characters (Bellamy!), the witty dialogue and banter, and of course, the swoony romance! This is the third book in a series and while it references past characters, it can easily be enjoyed as a standalone. However, I would highly recommend picking up the entire series! They are all fantastic reads from a favorite author.

This book was so good! I have been loving this series and I was so excited to read this one! A Wager with a Matchmaker is the third book in Jody Hedlund’s Shanahan Match series. Kiernan’s story needed to happen and I adored getting to know the characters better.
Kiernan cared deeply for his family and those under his care but he also wanted to prove himself. He felt the pressure of being a Shanahan and wanted to make his dad proud. I loved his growth over the book as he learned that he didn’t need to find fulfillment in his accomplishments. It was also sweet to read about him falling for Alannah.
I really liked Alannah too. She was struggling to find her place and she wanted to protect her brother. I loved how she enjoyed reading and how kind she was. She found herself falling for Kiernan but she was scared to let him in. She was so strong and didn’t allow life’s circumstances to break her.
The romance was sweet and passionate but still closed door. Kiernana and Alannah had a lot to work through and figure out to see if a relationship would even work. I enjoyed reading about their interactions as they learned to trust each other. The side characters were interesting and Bellamy was plotting as usual.
I really enjoyed this book and I would totally recommend it. I love the hints of what is to come for the next book. I am so excited for the next book, I know that it is going to be amazing! A Wager with a Matchmaker is a closed door historical romance.

I am sticking to my previous words! I say them in every review I write for a Jody Hedlund book. I love her books! And today I finished another winner. A Wager with the Matchmaker is the story of Kiernan Shanahan. He is from a well to do family in St. Louis Missouri in the mid 1800s. He still must prove to his father that he is capable of making a name for himself and being successful in his own right. He owns his own glass factory and is purchasing a brickyard. One other thing he needs to prove his worthiness to his father, is to marry a woman of certain standards. And yes, he had a list, 12 standards! When Bellamy, the matchmaker had no intention of using said list, a wager was made.
Alannah Darragh has had many heartaches and trying times of late, with only her brother Torin left of her family and both of them hiding out from a notorious gang leader. The storyline is interesting and quite entertaining. It is a clean, wholesome romance, no swearing and some Christian faith beliefs. It is the third book of the series and can be read as a standalone. But I highly recommend reading them all.
