Murder at the High School Reunion

Rate this book
At their twenty-fifth high school reunion in Portland, Maine, PI partners and moms Maya Kendrick and Sandra Wallage must figure out which of their former classmates should have been voted most likely to kill . . .

After all these years, Maya and Sandra have mixed feelings about seeing their high school classmates, but in one sense the evening promises to be something of a red carpet event. A shy wallflower in school, Alyssa Turner has blossomed into an Oscar-nominated actress—and she's coming to the reunion.

To their surprise, before the event, Alyssa contacts Maya and Sandra. She's going to be playing a private eye and would like to hear about their experiences. When they meet, she confides she was bullied in school by cheerleader Tawny Bryce and her mean girls clique while also having a huge crush on Tawny's boyfriend, the star quarterback.

When Tawny's body is discovered the night of the reunion behind the bleachers, the spotlight is on Alyssa. She turns to Maya and Sandra to find the real killer. But is she as innocent as she seems—or turning in another Oscar-worthy performance?

A great sleuthing pair. Always enjoy Maya and Sandra, and when you go back for a high school reunion, the drama will be quite good. All came together nicely. The criminal was not totally a surprise but also did come from nowhere too. I love the side stories too, as they help us look forward to each new book.

Friends Maya Kendrick and Sandra Wallage are also partners in a private investigation business in Portland, Maine. Together with their partners they attend their High School reunion which involves quite a lot of people being unpleasant to each other, and culminates in the murder of Tawny Bryce, who everyone remembers as the school bully. Of course Maya and Sandra soon find themselves signed up by a suspect to investigate the murder along with the police.

This is the first book I have read in this series and although it was an okay read it did not make me want to read the earlier books. I see there are many really good reviews so it maybe just means I have missed out on character development. I found it hard to like either of the main characters. Just three stars from me.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I really enjoy this series. The characters and their world are interesting and the plots, while not riveting, keep me involved. The main characters, two women who run a detective agency in Portland, Maine, are interesting and show some character development with each book. I was fascinated with this one where the murder was set at their high school reunion. I was clueless as to the baddie and motive right to the reveal.

Sandra Wallage, ex-wife of Maine's senior senator, and her PI partner, Maya Kendrick, are looking forward to their twenty-fifth high school reunion, well Sandra is. A friend, Alyssa Turner, who became an A-List Hollywood Star is rumored to be attending. Shy, nerdy Alyssa did not fare well in high school where mean girl, Tawny Brice, and her posse made her life miserable for having the audacity to have a crush on Tawny's boyfriend, Chad.

Having heard that Sandra and Maya are now PI's Alyssa wants to shadow then for an upcoming movie part and goes undercover for them. It just so happens that the undercover assignment is Chad Bryce, Tawny's husband, and Alyssa more than gets the goods on him.

At the reunion a lot of dirty laundry is aired, and Tawny ends up dead behind the bleachers with Alyssa the number one suspect. She is desperate to prove she had nothing to do with the murder and Maya and Sandra take what turns out to be a very twisted case.

My thanks to the Publisher and the Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

Murder At The High School Reunion by Lee Hollis this is the newest book in the Sandra and Maya mysteries in this time they’re heading to the their 25th high school reunion. when the story begins Maya and Sandra are discussing their 25th high school reunion and if you’re a fan of the series you already know Maya doesn’t want to attend but Max insists they go because Allison Turner is coming, bear fellow graduate who became a Hollywood movie star. right before the graduation the two PI’s get drugged into a nasty divorce case and little do they know they’re involvement will also help the movie star defend herself from a murder charge. I really enjoy cozy mysteries and I love the ones written by Lee Hollis as this is not her only series. I find the characters Sandra and Maya likable and so worth rooting for this one I thought was better than the last one I read but then again I always think that when just finishing a book lol! I absolutely recommend this book it is entertaining funny and The mystery is well put together. I do find some of the author‘s writing seems clunky in the plot seems put together almost like a jigsaw puzzle but if she could just tighten those parts of the book up it would definitely be a five star read. Still very much enjoyed it though. #NetGalley, #KensingtonBooks, #TheBlindReviewer, #MyHonestReview, #LeeHollis, #MurderAtThe HighSchoolReunion,

It's twenty-five years since private investigators Maya Kendrick and Sandra Wallage were high school students, and with differing amounts of enthusiasm, they are about to attend their school reunion. Meanwhile the class mean girl, Tawny Bryce, has hired them to confirm that her husband is having affair and one of the quietest girls in their year wants to pick their brains about what it's like to be P.I.s! The fact that she's now a Hollywood A lister is bound to be good for business, right? It's going to be an interesting weekend, that's for sure!

Unfortunately, when a body is discovered behind the bleachers, Maya and Sandra find themselves in the middle of another investigation with the possibility that one of their peers is a potential killer. After they make a vital discovery, the danger moves ever closer, and it looks as if the killer has one of them in their sights.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Kensington Publishing, Kensington Cosies, but the opinions expressed are my own. This is novel number five in Lee Hollis's series and can be read as a standalone as there is plenty of background information. The storyline was entertaining throughout, jand I enjoyed it enormously.

Murder at the High School Reunion (Maya and Sandra Mystery, #5) by Lee Hollis opens with Maya and Sandra taking on a case of a former high school classmate and mean girl, Tawny, right before their twenty-fifth high school reunion. When Maya and Sandra get stuck on their case, they enlist the help of another former high school classmate and friend turned actress, Alyssa. Soon after, they all attend the reunion, and Tawny is murdered after making a scene with her soon to be ex. When Alyssa becomes a suspect, Maya and Sandra must prove the innocence of their friend.

I received an Advanced Readers Copy ARC of this book from NetGalley for free in exchange for my honest review. Being approved to read Murder at the High School Reunion (Maya and Sandra Mystery, #5) by Lee Hollis made my day, and I wasn't disappointed in the least.

As soon as I started reading the book, it drew me in, and it felt like I was with an old friend, in the form of a story. I absolutely loved that the plot involved the acting world, and of course, trying to figure out the mystery of "whodunnit" kept me guessing for awhile because so many people had motive.

Of course, I absolutely loved the main two characters, Maya and Sandra ... that's a given in this series! I also really liked Maya's husband, Max, because he was always trying to protect her. Alyssa was another character that I enjoyed because I could relate to this character. I disliked one of the classmates that had a crush on Alyssa, and I didn't care for Sandra's boyfriend, Lucas, either. But, the real despicable character was the person who ended up being the killer ... I had actually liked this character before we found out what a horrible person he or she was.

Overall, Murder at the High School Reunion (Maya and Sandra Mystery, #5) by Lee Hollis, is a super fun book. It's a cozy mystery that I consider to be a beach read, and I mean that in the nicest way possible! Five out of five stars.

"Murder at the High School Reunion" the 5th instalment in the "A Maya and Sandra Mystery" by Lee Hollis. At their twenty-fifth high school reunion in Portland, Maine, P.I. partners and moms Maya Kendrick and Sandra Wallage must figure out which of their former classmates should have been voted most likely to kill . . .

The mystery is engaging and well-plotted, keeping me guessing and second-guessing until the very end. The high school reunion setting adds a fun twist, and Maya and Sandra's dynamic makes for an entertaining read.

I highly recommend this book to fellow cozy mystery lovers. Lee Hollis weaves a captivating story with plenty of surprises. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series!

I've been following this series since the very first book came out, but I haven't been able to get into it as much as I would like.

I like all the characters and like the close relationships that they all have, but I guess I don't love it as much as the Hayley Poweel series. Perhaps that's just due to the writing style, but I wouldn't say that this series is bad. I think it just might be that I enjoy the other series so much that it's hard not to compare.

Nevertheless, this book does have an intriguing mystery and like I said, I do enjoy the characters in this book. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a more relaxed Cozy Mystery as the pace usually builds slowly. The theme of the high school reunion was a nice touch.

Maya and Sandra definitely had differences that worked in their favors during a case, but this case wasn’t like their usual ones at all and stemmed from a murder at their high school reunion. One classmate was now a Hollywood actress who enlisted their help. Who knew what a trail of deception and lies it’d lead to?

I loved how once the case was being worked on by multiple law enforcement agencies, good old Oscar the IT guru was in the thick of it helping as always. He cracks me up acting like he’s pining away for Maya, but he sure knows his tech stuff! The showdown was long and tense, but the takedown was sweet justice. Another successful case and happy client!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Kensington Cozies via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.

"Murder at the High School Reunion (Maya and Sandra Mystery #5)" by Lee Hollis has Maya and Sandra reuniting with some high school classmates. One has hired them to get her evidence of her husband's affair. That of course blows up and at their high school reunion. Then, another classmate gets singled out as a suspect. Being a now Hollywood A-lister means she needs to be taken out of the murder spotlight and quick before it ruins her film spotlight. The A-lister pulls Maya and Sandra in to investigate, but really they shouldn't be giving freebie investigations to people who can afford it.

"Murder At The High School Reunion" is book #5 in the "Maya And Sandra Mystery" series by Lee Hollis.

I've never been a fan of attending pretty much any reunion, so really wasn't sure if I would like this book.

A former wallflower classmate, Alyssa Turner has become a Hollywood movie star and has returned home for the reunion. She and some other students were of course bullied and harassed by the mean girl clique. It all leads to drama at the reunion as the mean girls try to rewrite some history with how they treated others in school. Before the evening is out, the queen mean girl - Tawny Bryce is found dead behind the bleachers. It's up to Maya and Sandra to figure out who killed her and why. Suspicion falls on Tawny's husband, Alyssa and at least a couple of other people at the reunion.

It seemed like your usual reunion murder case for quite awhile - but then there were a few unexpected bits of information that came to light that, at least for me, turned the whole story around. The search for the killer suddenly got far more complicated than even the local police could have anticipated. Catching the killer provided some tense situations for several characters.

There was one nit-picky thing that annoyed me though. At one point Maya and Sandra are with their client in a hotel room in Portland, Maine with the TV on waiting for the local DA to give a press conference at 10AM. The author, Lee Hollis stated that the TV was showing that Gayle King of CBS Mornings had just wrapped up the popular "Talk of the table" segment. The CBS Morning show is broadcast live from New York City in the eastern time zone from 7-9AM. "Talk of the table" is aired at the beginning of the last half hour - so 8:30AM eastern. Maine is also on eastern time so how were they supposedly watching it live at 10AM in Maine? If you're going to insert a ref to something that airs at a certain time in real life, then get it straight in the book. Either you don't watch the show or just decided to toss aside a real time. You could have made something up. You are supposedly writers with imagination! JMO.

That being said, I found the second half of the book more interesting than the first half but the first half did provide some valuable clues to future sections. Overall, it was a decent read. 4/5 stars.

If you've ever attended a high school reunion gathering you'll be able to relate to the reluctance with which Maya and Sandra go to their 25th reunion. But, hey, it involves a paid case and, well, Maya always needs money. As they feared, a once and seemingly always mean girl and her cronies don't seem to have changed. In fact, one has a nasty surprise planned for her cheating husband that will rely on evidence she's hired them to find. On the plus side, former wallflower, shy girl Alyssa Turner will be there, too, and has contacted them. Alyssa is now an Oscar nominated actress. Unfortunately, murder steals the spotlight.

While I won't detail the plot, let's just say you're likely not to have much more sympathy for the victim than I did. Still, no one deserves to die. At their high school reunion, no less. Maya and Sandra are drawn into the investigation when it turns out Alyssa was heard having a confrontation with the victim not long before their death. Alyssa, far from being a snooty movie star turned out to be quite likeable and even helped them out with their case via her acting skills. Good preparation for her upcoming role as a private eye, I'd say.

Despite the crowd at the reunion, the focus characters in this book besides those mentioned, are Max and Lucas. Turns out Maya still loves her recently released from prison husband Max, an ex-cop, no less. Let's just say he has a mandatory meeting with his probation officer at the end. As for Lucas, well, he's madly in love with Sandra but she thinks he's too young for her. I think I missed the last book because I didn't realize how far this had progressed, so catching up on Sandra, formerly married to a prominent senator, was fun. As always, she's puts her life on the line for a case, so Lucas may have gray hair soon, however. Bottom line, a fun mystery with memorable characters good and bad, and interesting backstories to keep us intrigued. Thanks #KensingtonPublishing - #KensingtonCozies for this early peek at what is going on in Maya and Sandra's busy world. I'm looking forward to seeing how Max will fit into the equation as they seem to be firmly on the reunification trail. Let's hope he avoids any more unplanned probation conferences.

Murder at the High School Reunion is the fifth installment in the Maya and Sandra Mystery series featuring private detectives Maya Kendrick and Sandra Wallage and set in Portland, Maine. The ladies and their dates are planning on attending their 25th class reunion at South Portland High School. Mostly, they are looking forward to seeing fellow classmate Alyssa Turner who went from being the awkward, shy wallflower to a mega Hollywood star.

Just prior to the reunion, the duo is approached by another fellow classmate, Tawny Bryce who wants to hire them to prove her husband is cheating on her. Tawny was one of the mean girls, who got a kick out of bullying people, including Sandra. She faked a pregnancy to snag the handsome football star Chad Bryce at graduation and unbelievably they had stayed together for 25 years. However, now the kids are off at college and the marriage seems to have run its course. The ladies decide to take the case mostly because Maya needs the money.

There is an awkward exchange between Tawny and her clique of mean girls and Alyssa at the reunion and words are exchanged. When Tawny ends up dead behind the bleachers nobody is surprised, but who had the guts to kill the woman? Was it Alyssa who was seeking revenge for the way Tawny treated her in high school, was it Chad who had been publicly exposed for cheating or one of their other classmates who still harbored a grudge.

A quick and easy afternoon read with a returning cast of characters. Sandra is still struggling with her relationship with Lucas, 14 years her junior and unfortunately seems to be embarrassed by their age difference. The mystery exposes the hidden dangers of online dating.

I received an advanced copy of Murder at the High School Reunion from Kensington Books via NetGalley. While not required to write a review I am happy to offer my honest opinion.

Murder at the High School Reunion by Lee Hollis is a masterpiece in so many ways. The characters, Maya and Sandra, are unique in that Sandra is the divorced wife of a US senator and Maya is an ex-cop, married to another ex-cop who spent five years in prison for corruption. They are as different as night and day, Maya being an ex-Goth, and Sandra, a beauty queen. Yet as a team they accomplish wonders, although their balance sheet doesn’t always know it. Their newest client is someone they knew, and disliked, in high school wanting proof against a cheating husband. That turns out to be an embarrassing bust until another of their classmates, Alyssa Turner, shows up and volunteers to help. It turns out she was excellent undercover, probably due to her expertise as an award-winning movie actress. At the reunion, Tawny, the client, decided to show the video Alyssa had shot and sent the party into a spin. Tragically, only moments later her lifeless body was found behind the bleachers. This set off an investigation that took them in a wildly unexpected direction.

This plot was extremely clever and interesting, taking them into a world away from Maine. Several people were suspects, Alyssa included, but that didn’t last very long as there was no evidence. There was a DNA sample on the body that couldn’t be identified and again, Alyssa, jumped into the fray. There are so many mysteries to read that is it not easy to come up with something new, but Hollis did it here. Sandra and Maya are clever and read each other well, which contributes to the solving of the crime. It was a terrific read, fascinating to the end.

I have come to the conclusion that if you were a Mean Girl in high school, you should never attend a high school reunion. It just never ends well for them and Murder at the High School Reunion is no different. If you are familiar with the movie Romi & Michelle's High School Reunion, I can assure you that neither Maya nor Sandra match either of those two characters, Maya is a former cop who is making it as a private investigator and former senator's wife Sandra is her very classy partner. These two very capable ladies were part of the same graduating class. They remember who the mean girls were, the nerds, the socially inept, and the slightly odd students. Who would have guessed that a quiet and smart girl, Alyssa Turner, would become Hollywood royalty and a knockout. Let's face it, we knew Tawne Bryce was going to be the victim and that there would be plenty of suspects. The stand-alone story plot is well executed What I didn't expect was the dating app aspect of this mystery. I thank my husband every day that I have him, because dating in the digit age would not thrill me. Unlike this story which has a nice touch of a "thriller" vibe, some rapid page turning, and edge of your seat action for the finale. The characters are great, from Sandra's sophistication to Maya's hard edges but soft heart. Even the guys are good, like Sandra's goofy sons wanting to meet a real "live" Hollywood actress, and Maya's husband Max who made some bad choices but is doing good and loves Sandra something fierce.

The ugly ducklings return! Who are the two hottest people at Maya and Sandra's 25th class reunion? Hint: they met in Chess Club. Yes, Alyssa and Noah, the nerdy girl and the boy with an acne problem have had two of the best glow-ups you'll ever see and people can't stop staring. Which is probably why someone was able to strangle the class queen bee right under everyone's noses without being seen....

Who killed Tawny Bryce? You can't narrow down the suspects with motive because, let's face it, the "popular" chicks are never the most well-liked. There is so much going on here, there's the creepy kid who didn't know how to act around his crushes, the mean girls who haven't changed, and of course the jock who always got whatever he wanted is still having his cake and eating it too. But Maya and Sandra are on the case and you know they never quit, no matter how far they have to go to get their perp.

In the background we have Sandra's young hunk, Lucas, Max still letting his temper get him into trouble, and Maya being everyone's voice of reason. And don't forget the lobster rolls... or should I say lob-STAH? My stomach is growling just thinking about it! While this is perhaps my least favorite of Lee Hollis's series, I still love it. Anyone who enjoys a sweet cozy mystery should definitely check out this author!

Thank you to Lee Hollis, Kensington, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.

I hadn't read any of this series and now I can't wait to catch up! Maya and Sandra are 40-something private investigators who are as different, personality-wise, as can be. However, they blend together when solving mysteries.

When they attend their 25th high school reunion, they find some people have changed while others remained the same. Alyssa Turner, a quiet and shy student is now a famous actress. She is hoping Maya and Sandra can give her tips on being P.I.'s for her upcoming film. Unfortunately, the "mean girl" (Tawny Bryce) of the class still dislikes Alyssa and is not afraid to hurt other's feelings as well. A confrontation occurs and Tawny is found murdered behind the bleachers. Alyssa becomes a suspect and the ladies have limited time to prove Alyssa's innocence or guilt.

There's so much going on and if you've ever gone to a high school reunion, you can relate. It wasn't difficult to get up to speed with the characters. A mystery with twists and turns I loved!

The opinions expressed are my own and I received an ARC from Net Galley and Kensington.

I received an ARC copy of this book via NetGalley but all opinions expressed are my own.

I hadn’t read the previous four books in the series before reading this one so going into it I was hopeful that I wouldn’t be confused. I’d say overall, the book can be read and understood without reading the others but there definitely are references to the previous books that went way over my head. There is some subplot that I’m pretty sure would make more sense if I had the context on who the involved characters were from the other books. But overall I still loved the book. The setup of the mystery was great, I relate to the reluctance of going to the high school reunion (even though I’m only at the 10 year reunion right now), and I loved that the shy wallflower ended up becoming a famous actress. If I had the context from the other books I would’ve rated it higher but I definitely still recommend the book to anyone looking for a cozy mystery.

Good continuation of the series. This time Maya and Sandra are getting ready to attend their twenty-five year high school reunion. Sandra is excited, Maya not so much. But the fact that a former classmate, Alyssa, will be attending is exciting. Alyssa was a very shy girl who was bullied a lot. Now she is a very famous actress! A few days before the reunion, Tawny, another girl from their class and the main class bully, comes to their private detective office to hire them to get proof her husband, Chad, the former class football star, is cheating on her. They get the proof and at the reunion the filmed proof is included in the montage of memories Tawny shows just before she has Chad served with divorce papers...before everyone can recover from that a scream is heard and Tawny's body is found dead behind the bleachers. Was it Chad or did someone else have it out for the class bully...

Cue the slow clap, because Maya and Sandra are back—and I could not be more thrilled! If Rizzoli & Isles had a cozy mystery lovechild with coffee, sarcasm, and PTA drama, this dynamic duo would be it.

Murder at the High School Reunion brings all the nostalgic high school drama, but with a side of murder (obviously). When a former mean girl ends up dead behind the bleachers—because where else?—our favorite mom PIs are on the case, weaving through old crushes, Oscar nominees, and more secrets than a high school locker room.

Maya is sharp, Sandra is stylish, and together they are pure magic. Whether they’re chasing clues or sipping wine while dragging each other in the most loving way possible, these two are the reason this series remains one of my all-time cozy faves.

Funny, fast-paced, and full of “oh no they didn’t!” moments—this was cozy mystery perfection with a killer twist. More, please!

Maya and Sandra aren't sure how they feel about their upcoming high school reunion but the.two plan to attend. They learn that shy girl turn actress Alyssa Turner is going to be coming. The two are surprised when the actress ask them for their help for a new role she will be playing. When the reunion finally comes about everyone is excited to see the actress and some people act like they were friends.in high school when that defiantly wasn't the case with some. Tawny Bryce happens to be one of those instances. Tawny was a bully especially when it came to Alyssa and Alyssa has never forgotten. When Tawny ends up dead Alyssa is instantly a suspect especially when another reunion goer says they saw the two fighting. Alyssa asks Maya and Sandra to clear her name and the two jump into action. Will they be able to clear her name or will she end up in jail?

Murder at the High School Reunion is book #5 in the Maya and Sandra Mystery series by Lee Hollis.

It’s time for Maya and Sandra’s 25th high school reunion. Maya isn’t thrilled to go, but they have a case and Maya needs the money. One of the mean girls wants them to find out if her husband is cheating on her. Another classmate, Alyssa, who was a shy girl, is now a Hollywood actress will be there and wants to talk to Maya and Sandra since she’s going to be playing a PI in a future project. There’s a murder and Sandra and Maya have to see if they can clear Alyssa’s name. This is another solid addition to the series.

Thank you to the author, Kensington Cozies, and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Maya and Sandra are hired to find out who killed the mean girl at their high school reunion. Unfortunately, their client, an award-winning actress, could very well be the culprit. Now to follow the clues and determine whether Alyssa is performing just for them or whether someone is making her out to be the scapegoat.

What a great series, I love it! Sandra Amaya are just absolutely awesome and relatable. Who doesn’t love a good cozy mystery especially with two strong female protagonists? If you’re looking for a good series to add to your reading list, this is definitely one you should be considering.

This series is always one I enjoy and I love the main characters, Maya and Sandra. Once again they are called in to help solve a murder mystery before the wrong person is arrested. There are a lot of twists and turns with random clues sprinkled throughout the pages. I am enjoying watching Sandra become more confident and as her relationship with Lucas develops. The two P.I.s are classy, smart, and do a great job of navigating through the misguided clues to close the case. I am looking forward to the next adventure with Maya and Sandra.

Maya and Sandra are attending their high school reunion. Sandra is the ex-wife of a US Senator, Maya is an ex-police officer. Together they have formed a detective firm. They’re attending with a friend who is now a movie star. When the head cheerleader is found strangled, there’s more than a few choices. The cheerleader’s soon to be ex who was outed as a cheater, the star, or another classmate. This is a difficult search as almost anyone could have done it and few have a solid alibi. Great mystery whose guilty party comes from a unique direction. Love this series. #netgalley

Myra and Sandra are back in action. Each has mixed feelings about the upcoming high school reunion. (Don't we all). When fellow classmate turned superstar Alyssa Turner contacts them, Myra and Sandra are intrigued. Alyssa has been cast as a private eye and would like their input. When secrets are revealed, someone turns to murder. Will Sandra and Myra uncover the killer before they can walk away? Is Alyssa not guilty or just a very good actress? I look forward to the next installment. I received a copy through Netgalley. A review was not required.

I was a little nervous about reading this one after not being able to get through this author's last book. I'm happy to say that I enjoyed it! Maya and Sandra are back and asked to work with a couple of old high school people (not really friends). When one ends up dead, the other wants help clearing her name. I enjoyed every step of this mystery! Alyssa was a funny character and I hope she shows up in later books. I think she works well with the girls. Excited for more in the series!

Maya and Sandra are attending their high school reunion and hired to find proof of a cheating husband. When the wife ends up dead at the reunion, they begin to think there is more to the story. Lots of twists and turns for them to finally find the killer. A good read that has a surprising suspect. Loved this book, the series gets better with each book.
