Sweetkiss Creek #2

The Art of Falling in Love with Your Enemy

Rate this book
All’s fair in love and war…until the man you love to hate throws you in jail.

Etta: Moving to Sweetkiss Creek was supposed to bring me closer to family and offer a fresh start. Instead, it feels like everything is spiraling out of control. First, there's my mischievous dog who has a knack for escaping and ending up at the police station. Then there's my ex, who has found away to give me a headache even from miles away. But the cherry on top of this chaotic sundae is Zac Wright, the infuriatingly charming man who also happens to be my nemesis.

Zac: From the moment I laid eyes on Etta McCoy, I knew she was something special. She's drop-dead gorgeous, but her grumpy attitude could use a makeover. When my boss assigns me to organize a team bonding retreat, I’m unexpectedly partnered with Etta…and the more time we spend together, the more I realize her tough exterior is merely a candy-coated shell, and I want to be the one who cracks through and discovers the sweetness inside.

The Art of Falling in Love with Your Enemy is the second book in the Sweetkiss Creek series. While these characters were introduced in the previous book, I do think that this could likely be enjoyed as a standalone as well.

Every great love story starts with the police officer hero arresting the heroine, right? Okay, maybe not... but it certainly made this one stand out in the best way possible! Right from the start, this book had me laughing out loud and loving the dynamic between Zac and Etta... both from their banter early on as they butted heads or their fantastic chemistry as they fell for each other... it was all just so enjoyable! Throw in what I'm convinced is a match-making dog, an alpaca, and a brotherly bet that 90s RomComs should have taught us are NEVER a good idea... and well, there really was just so much to love about this fun story! I absolutely couldn't get enough and am looking forward to seeing what comes next in the series!

The Art of Falling in Love with Your Enemy is a closed-door romance with great chemistry, but nothing beyond kisses.

If you're looking for a great Enemies to Love story with small-town charm, this is one not to be missed.

It was such a cute closed-door romance. I loved that it was a slowburn and the alpaca scene… so funny! I was giggling throughout the book!

It was easy to read and I was able to read it in one sitting. The story was just perfect; the amount of comedy in here was just perfect!

It was my first time reading one of Anne’s books and I’ll be definitely reading more of her books!

Thank you for providing me an arc in exchange for my honest opinion!

I love a story where a dog brings a couple together and that's just how Zac and Etta reconnected. Once upon a time, they went on a double date and here they are years later--stars of an enemies-to-love story.

Zac is a small-town cop and Etta is back after a nasty divorce and ready for a fresh start. The laughs just kept coming and it was a fun adventure to watch where the accidental interactions lead them. I didn't read the first book in the series and I don't think that mattered too much, but it would be fun to get more of a back story between the fiery Etta and the by-the-book Zac.

"This. Woman. She's like fried food--you know you shouldn't eat it, but whatever it is, it's going to taste good so you crave it."

I thought Kemp did a great job of bringing these characters off the pages, with the perfect balance of contention, swoony sparks, and all the in between. The chemistry was sweet and the story was easy to read. Sometimes the timing is all wrong and watching a couple find one another again when it's right is so wonderful! I'm looking forward to enjoying the rest of the series.

Content: mild romance

DNF at 40%

* arc review *

As much as I love the title of this book, I couldn’t finish it. Had to DNF 40% through because it was so hard to get into it.

The writing style was a bit underdeveloped and the story was a bit boring and lacking entertainment that hooks you.

I also could not for the life of me understand why she hated him at the beginning. Even after he arrests her I don’t get it. He was doing his job and she got mad at him for it?

It felt like I was reading about two completely different FMCs whenever the point of view switches.

Enemies-to-lovers in a small town? Arrest-meet-cute? A matchmaking dog and an alpaca cameo? Yes please.

The Art of Falling in Love with Your Enemy was an absolute delight from page one. Zac and Etta’s dynamic had me laughing out loud—between her grumpy, fresh-start energy and his charming, rule-following cop vibes, the banter was perfection. What starts as annoyance (and… jail, oops) slowly shifts into real chemistry as they’re forced to spend time together, and watching those walls come down was so sweet.

I loved the balance of humor, heartfelt moments, and that slowburn, closed-door romance glow. Etta’s journey after a difficult divorce and Zac’s gentle persistence made their connection feel earned and adorable. Add in small-town shenanigans, a troublemaking pup, and one unforgettable alpaca scene, and this one hits all the cozy romcom notes.

A charming, clean, enemies-to-lovers romance with all the small-town charm. I devoured it in one sitting!

I recieved this as an ARC copy and this is my own honest opinion and review of the book. This is a story about Etta and Zac who had a double date years ago which really was a non starter. Years later Etta returns to her hometown of Sweetkiss Creek to rebuild her life after her divorce. Zac has become a local police officer and unfortunately continues to have numerous run ins with Etta. Between escape dogs, runaway Alpacas, expired licences, silly bets and eavesdropping in local takeaway. Will these two ever realise how they really feel. I loved the book and the characters are relatable and make the story more engaging. I look forward to the next in the series. I hope you'll enjoy it just as much as I did

A fun , quirky , hilarious romance that makes for a compelling read from the start . Alpacas and escapee dogs aside, the characters are awesome and the situations genius! Team bonding , thrown in jail . An Ex out to cause bother and family woes….A good honest to goodness enemy to lovers romance to knock socks off the rest out there. Love Anne’s writing style , so fluent and warming .

Kemp has tapped into the vat of comedic gold, and there’s no stopping that flow as it courses through this addition to Sweetkiss Creek.

With its competitive spirit, a misplaced bet, a meddling dog, an arrest that’ll have you laughing out loud, and that signature small town charm paired with the perfect dose of silly, Kemp has once again nailed it in every way. Etta and Zac’s banter was on brand as they continued to butt heads while he chipped away at her candy-coated shell, and I found their chemistry and transition between enemies to lovers to be electric and oh so charmingly sweet. (And of course Chewpaca and Tupaca added just the right dose of mischief and chaos 😉)

If you’re looking for an easy read and a good laugh, The Art of Falling in Love with Your Enemy is the perfect way to unwind after a long day. And why not check out the rest of the Sweetkiss Creek series while you’re at it; a good time guaranteed!

Zac and Etta have been verbally sparing for the last several months since they were introduced.  Is it blind hatred or is it like grade school where you pick on the one you have the biggest crush on?  Etta has recently gone through a divorce where her overly manipulative ex, Steve, has left some battle scars; while Zac has been single, he still been a little jaded when it comes to women.  The two have a small lovable middle man or rather dog that has their paths cross frequently before they are forced to work together in a series of group bonding events that she is helping to run.  Oh and not to mention, that he had to arrest her because of vehicle infractions…the love keeps coming up everywhere… but truly are they wiling to put their personal pride aside in order to see what could happen between them?!

I love the dynamic as these protagonists go through the story, it is clearly obvious they have strong emotions towards each other which evolves when various supporting characters get involved!  Good, bad or indifferent, Zac and Etta aren’t likely to back down despite what might be thrown at them!  There was some laugh out loud clumsy moments and some simple gestures that made these two so endearing!  Throw in some animal antics and this book was a crowd pleaser!  Anne does a great job in setting up the world of her story to be intimate without all the distractions of a bigger universe!  While I thought I initially wanted to have the protagonists from the first book in this one, it worked better that they were referred to without taking over and the bonus characters leave it open for further development as this series is no way complete!  Loved that this story came full circle in location but also in how Zac and Etta interacted with each other, also the continuity of Thor really made the conclusion that much sweeter!  Bravo! 5⭐️/5

Another fun romcom. Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes, of course, and these two have been enemies from first sight. I enjoyed the chemistry between them that was there despite their best attempts to stop it. I really enjoyed reading about Zac especially, except for the part where he pulled her over for going five miles over, which is completely uncalled for.

Even though the characters had clear chemistry, though, I did have issues shipping it, not because of the storytelling but because the heroine is divorced. I usually avoid reading romances with divorced characters unless their spouse is the love interest, but I was already invested in this series. When the heroine gave her reasons for divorcing her husband, she mentioned a paragraph or two before that she didn't want to be like women who change their marriages like they change their jeans. Then she explained the divorce was because she and her husband "outgrew" each other . . . like one does with a pair of jeans. But vows aren't actually something you outgrow, so even though I love Zac, I still shipped Etta and her husband together and honestly felt worse for him than I think I was supposed to.

Besides that, though, it was a fun book and I loved seeing the townspeople again. I feel like I'm going to really, really love the next book.

Note to more sensitive readers: a couple minor innuendos.

The Art of Falling in Love With Your Enemy is an enemies-to-lovers contemporary romance featuring Etta McCoy and Zac Wright.

Etta and Zac met a little while back while going out on a double date, just not with each other. They immediately butted heads and did their best to stay out of each other's way, which is hard to do when you live in the small town of Sweetkiss Creek. It is made all the harder when Etta's little dog learns to escape and regularly makes a B-line for the police station... and Zac.

When Etta agrees to lend a hand in planning and coordinating a team building event, she never would have guessed that she would have to work closely with Zac. To be fair though, she probably also would have been flabbergasted to learn that he was starting to see her in a different light.

We only have to work together for a few days, that's all. I may be a glutton for punishment, but maybe... just maybe... I can figure out a way during out time together to get Etta to notice me. Maybe.

This was a cute story. I like this small town that Kemp has crafted where everyone is so friendly. I believe this was the second book in the series, with at least a third planned.

If you enjoy:
*enemies to lovers
*small town romance
*witty banter
*escape artist dogs
*runaway alpacas
*non-spicy stories
and more...

then you should check out this book.

This is the cute story of Zac and Etta! Etta’s dog keeps running away to the police station, where Zac is a cop. The problem is, Zac and Etta went out once and now they are anything but friends! A little forced proximity at Zac’s team building event forces the two together and despite some rough patches, these two find their HEA!!

3 stars.

The vibes:
- dogs
- He falls first
- Grumpy x sunshine (she’s the grump)

My thoughts:
It was a cute, fast read. A lot of fun, silly moments between the two main characters. I wanted a bit more depth between Etta and Zac, and I felt like the conflict was built up and resolved really quickly. I think this will work for many readers, I just prefer a tiny bit more angst.
Overall- I love this author and will read any future books from her.

Wow! Etta and Zac were the epitome of opposites attract! Such a cute story! It was fun to see the gradual change of feelings! Plenty of ups and downs and sweet kisses! I loved the fun banter between them! Zac is a super funny jokester and he just whittled away at Etta’s barriers! Now I have to go read the stories I missed because this author has got me hooked!

This is the second book in the Sweetkiss series by Anne Kemp, but you don't need to have read the first book for this one to make sense (although I'd imagine this is a fun revisit to characters you'll already care about if you read the books in order, which I'll admit I didn't). I love the way animals are woven into this book, from escape artist dogs to funny alpacas, the animals are goofy and add humor in all the right places. Anne Kemp's characters are funny and relatable, and I found this read quite enjoyable. This will not be the last book of hers I read! (I received an ARC of the book. All thoughts and responses are my own honest review.)

A cute, easy to read romcom. I was able to start and finish it in an afternoon. This is my first Anne Kemp book. I think she is a talented author.

This is the second book in a series. These characters were introduced in the first book. I didn't feel like I needed to have read that to understand this one. Although, I have been told that if I had read it, the friction between Etta and Zac would have been explained more. If I get some free time, I wouldn't mind reading that one. And I'm looking forward to the next one that will be coming out later this year.

Thanks to the author for the gifted advanced copy. I'm happy to leave an honest review.

This is a reverse grumpy sunshine, enemies to more story. Etta is the grump having to deal with post divorce issues with her ex husband. She’s having a hard time trusting. Zac is the happy policeman who her dog Thor keeps running away to.

After one disastrous blind date there is some animosity between them. When Zac arrests her later it certainly doesn’t help.

This is a sweet story of breaking down barriers, misunderstandings, and an unfortunate bet. The characters were interesting and the added animals made it even more charming.

too much fluff

Fluffier than a Hallmark movie and the timeline was about as ridiculous. Throw in every cliche you can think of and the mildest “enemies to lovers” trope I’ve ever come across.

4.5 out of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is book 2 of the Sweetkiss Creek Series and can be read as a standalone, though reading The Art of Falling in Love with Your Best Friend is where Etta and Zac are first introduced and it may make you understand their initial dislike towards each other more. The book's blurb lets you know what to expect. It's a great enemies to lovers first person dual romance.

When Etta moved to Sweetkiss Creek, she had plans to start her wine business and move on from her past relationship. With her ex making things difficult for her and putting a pause on her business plans, it has made Etta grumpy - especially around Zac. He finds a way to get under her skin but what irritates her even more is the fact that she finds him attractive. As they are forced to work together, she can't ignore his charms and wonders if she can trust again and let him into her life. What I liked about Etta was that she was feisty and gave as good as she got from Zac. Sometimes she did have a sour mood even before he did anything but she didn't cross any lines and she acknowledged her behavior to herself. I liked seeing her slowly open up to Zac and become friendly with him.

As the only cop in a family of lawyers, Zac has felt the need to prove himself and has a competitive nature - especially where his brother is concerned. Though he knows better, he lets himself be goaded into making bets he shouldn't. A bet prompts him to confront his feelings for Etta. Although they didn't get off on the right foot, he is fascinated by her. He has a playful nature so he loves getting a rise from her. Being forced to spend time together through the team bonding retreat allows him to show her that they can be more than enemies. Though Zac liked teasing Etta, I liked how he genuinely wanted to get to know her. And, even when he didn't make the best decisions, he was able to recognize that and make up for them.

Although Etta and Zac are enemies, it's the type of situation that lacks real hatred towards each and rather is based on a bad first impression and them trying to ignore the underlying attraction they have towards each other. Because of that, their romance is a clean slow burn. I believe a few mild choice words are used. However, you will enjoy them trying to avoid those feelings because their banter is fun. I liked the build up to their relationship. There are a couple of situations that you may not find believable but they do make for some comedic moments. I also really enjoyed the friendships that Etta had and the way that forgiveness was a theme of this book. I do wish that there would've been a bit more about Zac's role with the dogs at work I don't want to spoil what he was in charge of but it was fine as is. I had been looking forward to Etta and Zac's book and I enjoyed it very much.

I am never disappointed with a romantic comedy written by Anne Kemp, and this one was no different. Humor abounds in this enemies to lovers story which had me laughing like a hyena during a couple of scenes as I imagined these scenes in my mind.

Zac Wright is a local police officer who has a very competitive relationship with his brother Tuck. This competitive relationship is going to land him in hot water. Etta McCoy is still nursing her burns from her ex-husband (Steve). She really has no desire for another relationship. She went on a date with Zac that was a complete disaster, and she would prefer to never see him again. Her crazy dog, Thor, is an escape artist who, for whatever strange reason, ends up the police station when he escapes, which puts her in direct contact with Zac. The reception between these two is icy without a hint of warmth. They end up having to work together, so they will have to get along and maybe learn something along the way.

I loved this story. Both Zac and Etta are complete klutzes (which I can identify with). I lost track of how many times these two face planted. Embarrassment seems to follow both of them around. The alpacas named Chewie and Tupaca will provide some comic relief as well. There is also a particularly funny scene with Thor stealing a random stranger's hotdog that had me in stitches. This dog was quite the character. This story was a breath of fresh air for me. I love to read mysteries, but there is no better way to escape reality than a good romantic comedy. In my opinion, this book would make an awesome movie. If you enjoy a good laugh with a little romance mixed in, you will enjoy this book.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Review:
2nd book of Sweetkiss Creek series. Loving the bickering and the flirting between these two adorable characters. Zac and Etta are just so cute together. Thor is really a scene stealer too being attached to Zac and that what makes them meet together (kind of like a matchmaker too) and then Zac being cheeky towards Etta and as they got to know each other they got closer and also them bickering and flirting with each other are just so entertaining. And also thanks to the bet that Tuck (Zac’s brother) challenge him with though it is not really a nice way but it gives Zac the courage to do it. (can’t spoil much you will know what the bet is when you read it) And I love the friendship between the girls because they always there for each other and they are just the sweetest I do wish that I have true friends like that the one that stays with you and encourage you and will never leave you behind. This book made me laugh, smile and swoon.

Thanks @annekempauthor for the ARC copy.

Audiobook Review:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Zac and Etta were apart of a disastrous double date. While their friends found love, they walked away with nothing but a bitter rivalry. But when the pair is tasked with working alongside one another, they quickly learn first impressions can be misleading. Will they be able to start over fresh, or will a brotherly bet upend their progress?

If you are a fan of the Sweetkiss Creek Series, then you are no stranger to Zac and Etta. We were first introduced to them in book one, The Art of Falling in Love with Your Best Friend. While I loved Dylan and Reid, Zac and Etta stole the spotlight. From the beginning they had great chemistry and banter. The tension created between them was so palpable, I needed more.

Therefore, I was ecstatic to learn Zac and Etta were the main characters in book two. This book did not disappoint. Anne Kemp did a terrific job transferring their relationship over. In fact, getting to listen to this as an audiobook was instrumental in bringing the story to life. Both Mia Madison and Wyeth Watts (narrators) did a great job executing Anne Kemp’s witty dialogue.

As much as I enjoyed the enemies to more trope, I thought this book did a great job depicting adversity. Both Zac and Etta were faced with financial problems that directly impacted their work and dreams for the future. Seeing them struggle helped ground the story. However, it was nice to witness them overcome the obstacles standing in their way to achieve the HEA.

Special thanks to Anne Kemp for gifting me a copy of this audiobook! I can’t wait to continue on with the Sweetkiss Creek Series and see what other couple falls in love in the small town.

This is a fun, sweet closed-door, enemies to lovers read.

Q: What is worse than watching your date from a few months ago dodge and/or hide to avoid you every time your paths might cross?
A: Realizing that you, personally, are the one who is going to have to arrest her and bring her in to your precinct after a routine traffic stop.

Of course Zac can't stop thinking about this tornado of a woman who is fierce and a force to be reckoned with. Sure, they got off on the wrong foot but maybe there's still hope for them yet.

What I loved:
- Enemies to Lovers with some great scenes (i.e. Alpacas, arrests, falls and more)
- Etta's ability to grow and see how her past grievances were effecting her future relationships
- Zac's ability to put aside self interest on behalf of the greater good
- I just really appreciate the character growth and the side characters that were always there for each other and willing to admit when they were wrong.

What I did not love:
- The missed communication I could see coming from a mile away and still hoping it would not happen.
I have not read the first book in this series but after reading book 2 (which is also a stand alone), I think I'll probably go and give it a read as well. And I'm really excited to read Amelia's story which is coming out next!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review of this book. Happy Reading!

Lovely summer rom/com!

Very enjoyable romantic comedy. Likeable characters and sweet story, with just enough hurdles to make the pursuit meaningful. For me it got a little slow in one or two places, which may have been more on me than the book. The writing itself was VERY good. Loved the humor. Got the 'tone' easily. Could be easily persuaded to read more stories about this small town and it's inhabitants. There is a delightful use of animals in this story too! Easy to read, easy to recommend.

Etta's life is stressed and messy. Her divorce, which she had thought was amicable, is not going as planned. Her starting over is being thwarted. Her plate is full, frustrated, and she's a wee bit wound too tight. Her Terrier, Thor, is escaping with great regularity and showing up at the police station, which brings her path straight to Zac. Unfortunately for the two of them, they've already been on one date... and it was a disaster. Zac is bringing extra skills with dogs and leading groups to the local police force, and the Captain is wanting to make impactful use of those skills. Throw in Etta's girlfriends, siblings on both sides, alpacas, friendly betting, and locals, and we've got quite the sweet small town romance.

Grumpy Etta McCoy and Mr. Sunshine, Zac Wright are like oil and water. After a very bad first date, the two just don't mix.
Zac is a police officer and gets put in charge of a team-building retreat for his precinct. When he checks out a campground for the retreat, Zac runs into Etta, who is helping out a friend and will be in charge of running the event for Zac.
Zac thinks he can crack her tough exterior but Etta's life seems to be spiraling out of control; she's dealing with a salty ex and business woes. Are the two a recipe for disaster or could this be the beginning of something sweet?

It's a closed-door romance with laugh-out-loud moments, chemistry and don't you love when a dog brings people together? I loved the banter, the strong gal pal bond between Etta and her friends and the brotherly, competitive nature between Zac and Tuck
