An accessible introduction explaining the person and divinity of Jesus from Mike Reeves, author of the acclaimed bestseller The Good God. How can we know who God is? We look to Jesus. How can we live a godly life? We look to Jesus. How do we know we can be saved? We look to Jesus. In this lively and refreshing book, we find an accessible introduction to the profound glory and wonder of Christ. With wit and clarity, Michael Reeves, author of bestselling The Good God, draws from notable teachers from church history to the present to reveal a deeper and richer understanding of who Jesus is, his life on earth, his death and resurrection and his anticipated return. Rather than just merely adding to our knowledge about Jesus, this book is a call to consider Christ more deeply so that he might become more central for you, that you might know him better, treasure him more, and enter into his joy. Be encouraged to look upon Jesus and see how he is indeed our life, our righteousness, our holiness and our hope. This accessible and engaging book will help you understand Jesus Christ in a deeper and richer way and draw you into a deeper relationship with God.
Michael Reeves (PhD, King's College, London) is President and Professor of Theology at Union School of Theology in the UK (www.ust.ac.uk). He is Director of the European Theologians Network, and speaks and teaches regularly worldwide. Previously he has been Head of Theology for the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship and an associate minister at All Souls Church, Langham Place, London.
Truly one of the best books I have read (if not the best book) to draw my eyes upon the loveliness, glory, and compassion of Jesus, especially toward me. It warmed me to the beauty of who Christ is and how that affects my life as I seek to love and serve Him, now and forever. This is a book I will return to again and again.
This is a great introduction to Christ and the Christian life. For a newcomer to Christianity, or for a long-time follower of Jesus, this book will stir your heart and lift it toward Him. Five chapters in typical Reeves style: high energy, good momentum, great one-liners, on target historical anecdotes and lots of biblical interaction.
The fourth chapter on the Christian life is worth the price of the book, but be sure to take advantage of the rest too . . . Christ in the Old Testament, the Incarnation, Christ and the Trinity, Christ's return, etc., it all adds up to so much more than 112 pages.
I think I've just read the best book I'll read in 2016!
Reeves does it again - a wonderful blend of joy giving, heart warming, heaven anticipating, Christ delighting rich theology. This is a must read. Too often our hearts grow cold, if we read more books like this, or more writers wrote with this heartwarming passion, our love for Christ would fan into flames.
Reeves oozes enthusiasm, and communicates great theology with ease and warmth. He shows connections in parts of scripture I didn't realise were connected--exposing even more riches. Read it, slowly!
(NB This book is also published as "Rejoicing in Christ")
An excellent introduction to the person and work of Christ, accessible enough for those who are new to the issues but deep and devotional enough to speak to seasoned Christians. The chapters progress through salvation history: the preincarnate Christ, the significance of the incarnation, redemption won by Christ, or union with Christ and it's present effects (my favourite chapter) and our eschatological hope in Christ. If there's a weakness, it's that this book doesn't dive into Chalcedonian orthodoxy very deeply - but as a primer (or refresher) of the significance of Christ to absolutely everything, this is where to start. It will minister to both head and heart.
Reading Mike Reeves describe the sweetness of Christ with such glee is like listening to a child tell their story of going to a candy shop. It brings a smile to your face and you want to join them in their delight. Except in this case the sweet taste that we joyfully delight in with Reeves is free, completely satisfying, and you can never have too much.
Not that easy but also not that long to read. A very insightful treatment of the person and work of Jesus Christ and our relationship to Him as His followers.
It swiftly steps through all of time and space (beginning before there was any) and points out aspects of who Christ is, what he was or is or will be doing and how this transforms life. A small book, and "easy" to read... it still takes a while to get through because each heading will send your head spinning into reflection.
"In the beginning" looks at the time before the incarnation, Jesus before creation, at creation and through the old testament, his deity, his closeness with the father and Spirit, his nature as the Word of God, being communicative and delighting to meet with us, his preciousness to the Father and thus the wonder of him being a gift to us! The angel of the Lord, the messenger, the almighty. God never revealed himself to us outside of Christ so it is Christ we see guiding his people through the wilderness, Christ meeting with Moses on the mountain top, Christ preparing his people for the sacrificial lamb...
"Behold the man" looks at the incarnation of Jesus, what it means that Jesus who is God himself would empty himself, humble himself and enter human history as a human, the new Adam, to give life to his bride (us, the church) and be one with her! Reeves gives clear consideration to that whole idea of Adam's sin and our fall and how Jesus can affect all of that, how the whole "union" with Christ thing works and how it really matters. What Christ's life reveals to us about the Father and how he engages with us.
"There and back again" talks about the cross, jesus death and resurrection with so many deep intricacies and implications. Things that are so wonderful and good to meditate on, things we so often forget or never even consider. Jesus, dying on the cross, was "being so himself that even a Gentile executioner sensed it." Wow. How we died with him on that cross, united with him. How he is the firstborn among the dead, securing for us a vindicated, resurrected life, the beginning of a new creation, with him as our righteousness, our husband, his sonship as ours.
"Life in Christ" is the now. Our oneness with Christ as he sits at the right hand of the Father, preparing a place for us. What our life looks like as we share his life, are united to him, to rejoice in our sufferings, to receive life from him, to be dependant upon him.
"Come, Lord Jesus" gloriously finishes with a look at the return of Jesus, with Jesus himself as our reward and bringing with him every other possible blessing, renewing all of creation for an ending that is far greater than even that good beginning in Eden.
Probably the best book I've read all year. Mike Reeves provides a richly theological and devotional introduction to the Christian life, firmly emphasising the fact that Christianity is fundamentally about Christ.
(From the introduction:) "The centre, the cornerstone, the jewel in the crown of Christianity is not an idea, a system or a thing; it is not even 'the gospel' as such. It is Jesus Christ."
A particular highlight is the emphasis and insight he gives on the Christian's union with Christ.
Perhaps not a book for the brand new Christian but otherwise an engaging and enlightening read for believers of all ages.
A soul-stirring, heart-warming book about how Christ himself is the Christian's life. Christianity is Christ and 'Christian life and Christian theology must begin and end with Jesus Christ, our Saviour and our Goal' (107). Salvation and godliness are only found by being united to him: 'Not a technique, a method or a habit; the essential secret of godliness is Christ. Sin is precisely Christlessness; all attempts at self-improvement and moral reformation without him are sin' (87). This book has helped me treasure Christ - and all that he is and does - at the start of a new year. There is no one like him!
Ruthlessly but gloriously christocentric. This book is rich as a good brownie, all about our the christian's union with Jesus in all things. Reeves makes a fantastic author with transparently excited insight, interesting historical asides and easy British wit throughout. A wonderful read - one of my favourites in a long time.
I have been going through a trial and to be reminded that Christ is my past, present and future was an amazing encouragement. My heart soared as I was captivated by the beauty and glory of my Saviour. Thank you Michael for reminding me that Jesus is truly the centre of our faith and to look up to him.
What a great little book. I thoroughly enjoyed Reeves' The Good God and this follows a similar path; both books share wonderful insights that have increased my love for God, the Trinity and Christ. Recommended.
Brilliant, a mixture of the best of reformational and puritan thinking packed into a short book that bursts will love for Christ. This one needs to be read annually i think!
