As the second son, Micah Brachon is happy to leave the responsibilities of running their small coastal kingdom to his brother. It allows more time for his inventions and experiments.
When one of those experiments is sabotaged, his ordinary life is turned upside down - and he finally learns about the deadly faction that seeks to rip apart the foundations of their government.
As the stakes escalate, it will take all of Micah's skills to defend against a faceless, desperate enemy. An enemy bent on destroying his brother, and anyone who stands in their path.

Cate Dean has been writing since she could hold a pen in her hand and put more than two words together on paper.
She grew up losing herself in fantasy worlds, and now creates her own worlds, infusing them with adventure and magic.
When she's not writing, she travels to places that inspire her, having her own adventures, and reads pretty much anything she can get her hands on.
There ~ I got the official biography out of the way. I love to write, and yes, I have been doing it most of my life. I've made up stories in my head for as long as I can remember, and I’m thrilled to be able to bring those stories to life, and share them with you.

Not too shabby for a short story. There were some grammatical errors, but nothing so bad it detracted from the story. It was a bit disappointing to have such a quick connection between the girl and the two boys, but it worked.
Only one swear word used throughout this novella. Mild violence
This was a really good prequel. I'm looking forward to reading the next book. Micah is a smart and inventive young man whose older brother is the prospective ruler. He gets into trouble but also gets out of trouble with his inventiveness. Recommended
Sweet story. Nothing earth-shattering, but a good premise, and I enjoyed it.
The writing style feels a little... immature, somehow, and the sentence construction is strange at times (there are "wood doors" instead of "wooden doors", for example, and someone says at one point, "I threw the books in my hand at him". It kind of makes you do a double-take). At another point, something is described as "fallout", which struck me as strange because that's a word that's so very specific to the aftermath of a nuclear explosion that I can't see it ever evolving in a world that's never discovered radiation.
Other than those stylistic things, though, the story is very well edited indeed - I didn't find a single typo, missing word, errant punctuation mark, etc.
As I said, I enjoyed it, but perhaps not enough to want to start yet another series; I have too many on the go right now anyway. But if you like epic fantasy that's easy to read and not too deep, this might just be right up your street.
Fast believable action. The mother could use a little more depth. You don't know if she is supportive of her stepson rule or plotting to stubborn him and put her son in his place as ruler. Story was a little too short to flesh out the peripheral characters but could. Be remedied in the follow on.good beginning.
Exciting glimpse into what looks to be a great series
An exciting introduction to several intriguing and complex characters. Left me wondering how they will resolve all that will likely be thrown at them. Looking forward to the next book.
