Raamat "Elu on väeteenistus Maa peal" koosneb kahest iseseisvast osast, millised on algselt avaldatud Itaalia kultuuriorganisatsioon Raido. Eestikeelne tõlge põhineb Arktos Media poolt kirjastatud raamatul "A Handbook of Traditional Living". Esimene osa, Traditsiooniline maailm, on lühike ja kontsentreeritud kokkuvõte Julius Evola teaditsioonilistest õpetustest, mis põhineb tema magnum opus'el Rivolta contro il mondo moderno (Revolt Against the Modern World). Võitlus nüüdismaailma vastu on eelkõige sisemine võitlus - suurimat džihaadi tuleb igal hetkel pidada sisemiste vaenlaste vastu. Eesmärgiks on käsiraamat, mitte põhjalik monograafia.

An excellent introduction to the 'world of Tradition', with all that it includes, such as the view of symbolism, hierarchy, duty, honour, ages of the world, decline of the West etc.
A primer for people who do not dare to tackle Julius Evola's 'Revolt Against the Modern World'. Finally it also contains instructions on how to LIVE the traditional life, with a detachment to the result of your actions.
The only failure in this book is that it is way too short to adequately deal with the issues raised. Its excellent as a primer, but the topic at hands deserves a multi-volume treatment.
2.5* A useful introduction to Traditionalism and those writers and philosophers most influential upon the Traditionalist community: principally Evola, Codreanu and Guenon. I found it somewhat dry and waffly rather than inspirational.
The first half of this volume concerns itself with an overview of the tenets of Tradition. It provides a skeletal overview of the theories Evola tackles in his masterpiece Revolt Against the Modern World. It delves into the origins of the modern world through various stages of involution whereby our attachment to tradition and the sacred has been lost due to subversion of the divine authority and castes which provided hierarchical order to civilization.
"To leave the parameters of Tradition meant...to abandon the rites, alter or violate the laws or mix the castes corresponded to a regression from a structured universe (cosmos) back into chaos."
The Ancients divided history into four eras, a vision of cyclical eternity. Humans fell from their originally superior condition to an increasingly earthly and material one. This retreat of heavenly influences is sometimes referred to as the "dimming of the Gods."
Human origins were resplendent and immortal. The Golden Age--symbolized by fire, sun and life. The Ancients speak of a mythical race forever in contact with cosmic and divine forces with its centre in the far North. From its roots all civilizations have sprung.
Cataclysms mark the transition from one era to another--a world axis shift--the memory of which is preserved in many traditions. This loss of the centre (loss of origins) ushered in the 2nd age (the Silver Age--symbolized by the moon, night and the serpent). The original link with the divine was obscured and religion emerged as a reaction to the loss of the primordial condition (religion, to reconnect or tie again). This age also separates political power from spiritual authority.
The third age (the Bronze Age) sees a process of secularization of the spiritual element. An age where power is affirmed by violence. The advent of a merchant class ushers in the 4th age, the current modern world which is ruled by economic power--a utilitarian view of economy permeates all aspects of life.
The second half of this volume is a "putting theory into practice" section which falls flat and can therefore be completely skipped. However, the first half provides such a good overview of Evola's traditionalism that it is a worthwhile orientation for those who are unfamiliar with his work.
This book is a mixed bag to me first its short and to the point which I love and I love how the book comes off as Polarizing but theres things that I agree with (and when I agree I agree strongly), theres things that I disagree with (and when I disagree I come with a bit of recoil, perhaps its me being a Catholic, pride or perhaps its just a question of learning from 20th Century).
Luckily theres much in the book that can be integrated for a Practicing and Traditional Catholic, since this type of Traditionalism has some of the Ancient Paganism undertones rather than our Modern Pagan thought, its like re-learning what it means to be strong and virtuous all over again.
I gave this book 3 out of 5, again because theres a lot of points of agreement, but then there are somethings which made me recoil a bit, namely the authors racism, I am not sure if he loves his own race or if he hates others, its one thing to love your own but I find it to be counter-intuitive to hate the race of another. Yet at the same time, I agreed with his thoughts on Liberalism and Democracy and his polemic on the inherent and observable inequality of men that flies in the face of the Enlightenment notion which was responsible for producing Liberalism today, luckily one gets the sense throughout the book that those "who are better" should embrace the higher quality with humility and responsibility in service to those who "are not".
I also am a bit iffy of the conception of time (seen as cyclical rather than as linear) that he possess, to a certain extent I agree because I am skeptical of the "Myth of Progress" and the fallacious Argumentum ad novitatem but theres something about his conception of time I am uneasy about too. There are other things, but these things that were noticeable.
Den första delen behandlar ”The World of Tradition” och den andra ”The front of Tradition”.
Den första delen utgår ifrån Julius Evolas bok Revolt Against the Modern World och hans redogörelse för Traditionalismen.
Overall I think it was a useful for the foundational concepts of traditionalism however I think this is more true of the first half than the second. That’s not say I didn’t enjoy the second half but it seemed unnecessarily lofty and drawn out and repeated itself in parts. Still a great book and nice sized font
This was a great read I learned about the initial impact of philosophy and other doctrines. Symbolizing the effects of our history makes us better people. This book taught me to learn from it and be free of agendas that weigh us down. I recommend this book to people who are interested in liberty and such.
This is an interesting book with thought provoking perspectives I had not heard before. Some of the concepts are applicable today and some seem to be dated to the time it was written despite its refrain of the timeless. I think its a good starting point for further exploration of these ideas.
Really good starting point on traditionalist philosophy. It would be useful as a meta-analyses to include a forward for those reading who are looking for a bigger concept and see actual implementations of this philosophy - such as pagan Europe or pre-modern India.
