He studied Fine Arts at Musashino University. At first, he was more interested in illustration, printmaking, and painting than in manga. However, when he considered the best way to make a living from his art, he decided to focus on the world of Japanese comics and trained himself, rather than the usual approach of working for several years as an apprentice to an experienced manga artist.
He was still a student when his first work, The Boss Is an Onee, was published. He soon attracted attention for his distinctive drawing style, his fantastical and melancholic plots, and his use of fantasy characters and anthropomorphic animals.
Listen…I’m not really a furry Typ or anything like that but wow this one here I enjoyed it so much!! it’s really something different, new, definitely unique and the smell kink absolutely makes sense here, since both MCs are actually dogs! I loved how this was portrait here it had a slight innocent touch to it even if it was really kinky. I love it! I also loved both characters! Both were so cute and sweet, I loved how their dynamic here worked out.
All the happy wiggling tails made this even more better haha it was really adorable.
I‘m actually so sad that there isn’t a second volume about them I would eat it right up😭💓
I'm a big fan of Nagabe, so I love reading his works. This was, like, an amp up NSFW-wise compared to his other works. I mean well, yeah, the title is self-explanatory, it's a story based on a scent fetish. If you're going into it thinking "oh cute furry boyfriends" sure, but be aware of its content :')
A manga about olfactophilia fetish 👀 oh pheromones, what a lovely thing you are. Anyways, for being a pornographic BL, this is a mix of cute yet kinky.
It all started when Joseph caught him red-handed, sniffing his shirt in a deserted classroom. His bloodhound nose-deep in his shirt, taking a long, enjoyable sniff...
Nagabe is one of those mangaka that I pickup immediately, because no matter what I’m guaranteed a unique story with memorable characters and a thread or two of stuff I’m not really going to find in any other titles. If you’re unfamiliar, Nagabe is well known for his wholesomely creepy series The Girl From the Other Side, but he also occasionally dabbles in the world of BL. And when he does, they’re always beastmen with particular tastes. Check out the recommendations at the bottom of the review for a list of his others...
The first time I read something where I felt like it was specifically tailored to me and my freaky gay autist furry mind. Because of that, this is an immediate all-time favorite!
Well, I didn't think I will be reading gay furry manga this year but hey! There's a first time for everything! I did not expect it to be so sexual. I started reading it based on one panel I saw on twitter and it wasn't at all explicit. Well....I was mistaken. And I loved being mistaken. This one shot had a really interesting premis, which is the smell, or the act of smelling. It is intriguing to read a story about anthropomorphic animals that yeah do sexual stuff but they do it in a way that stems from the fact they are animals. In this case, dogs. That small thing makes this manga far more interesting than it would be if the main characters were written as just humans but animals. When it comes to characters and story itself it is just a simple story about finding out you like boyyyyyysssss and experimenting with sexuality. It's not revolutionary but making the smelling plot the main point makes this manga far more engaging. Of course, it can be read as a simple fetish story. I won't say it can't be that. But I found it to be more than just that. It intrigued me. When it comes to art Nagabe is a great artist and I can't wait to read more from him. Also I found out he wrote The Girl From the Other Side only after reading SMELL. Now I have to read it. No more excuses.
Tagline missed the opportunity to say "Started off with a sniff, how could it end up like this? It was only a sniff, it was only a sniff!!"
This was very cute <:) I found these two's budding relationship very charming. I feel like Nagabe uses the characters being dogs + smelling pheromones as a metaphor for clicking instantly with someone for no particular reason. In this book, Noi, the bloodhound, enjoys the different scents of his classmates, but Joseph is his favorite -- for no stated reason. In the same way, once they get closer, Joseph realizes all he wants to do is be surrounded by Noi's scent. I just find that precious.
I thought the art was very cute! I read the ebook but would like to flip through a printed version someday to see how it compares. The only thing about the story that I feel is a downside is the fact that Noi doesn't talk. It would have been nice to see his words from his own mouth as opposed to Joseph doing the talking for him, in order to make everything feel more two-sided, and for Noi to feel more like an active character.
That's all. Other than that, very sweet little story!
And we're back with more anthropomorphized BL from Nagabe! SMELL worked a little more for me structurally than Monotone Blue. The rationalization behind both Joseph and Noy's interest in scent tracks since they're technically dogs (also can understand why armpit love exists among some BL fanfic writers now). Noy's minimal verbal communication was handled well too. Both characters were able to establish boundaries and veer the line between curiosity and outright lust in a way that didn't upset me. I can see why this got shelved in the adult manga vs. the teens for the library system I work for. Let me glean that last scene for my future fanfic/s thank you.
My queen Adrienne Beck did another great job with the translation, showing off Joseph's frankness in an appropriate way. A couple stars are taken off for MxM relationships being viewed as "not normal" and some minor gay for you coding (also Joseph going "you made me this way" to Noy is so ick). There's a lack of conflict here outside of a minor misunderstanding, which I can see other readers respecting. There's at least one more property of Nagabe's that has been released stateside, so I'll be curious to check that one out in the future.
so i saw this somewhere(I wanna say TikTok??)and I was curious since it reminded me of beastars a little. it arrived today, read it all in one way and I LOVED IT
now I dont really wanna get into spoilers so, ill just say this to get it out of the way; Musk fetish, not for me however its the most tame thing that could've been in this book. secondly, it was cute. Joseph and Noy were really adorable together when they weren't engaging in their musk stuff! I will say them doing the sniffing stuff in the bathroom was a little bit weird given they'd JUST used the urinals, I dont think urine would smell all that good but what do I know?
I really loved rhe artstyle and how Nagabe did facial expressions, it kinda reminded me of how I did facial expressions when I first started drawing in high school. sucks that this is the only book regarding Joseph and Noy, I really wanna see them grow closer together and possibly get together and be boyfriends.. oh well. it was good for was it was! would recommend to others curious about this Manga
Gave this 4 stars since I’m a fan of Nagabe’s work. I wish this volume had more chapters or even just wasn’t a one shot story, because I really would’ve like to see more of Noy and Joseph’s dynamic. Even though it was unconventional, it was very adorable since neither felt pressured or uncomfortable with the other and they had surprisingly good communication going on despite the slight misunderstanding that happened.
This one was a little more risqué than I expected based on the last few things I've read from Nagabe. I kind of wish EAT went more like this one did. This book was cute. It mostly revolves around the smell fetish thing so there's not much going on plot wise, but I enjoyed it for what it was.
I literally created an account on Goodreads to rate this book. This is a fuzzy, furry BL masterpiece. The art style is beautiful and keeps you reading (yes). Will have fun rereading it!
Edit: I should declare that I'm slightly biased, being a hella queer furry myself, but still. Read this book. You will not regret it.
A little more lewd than Nagabe’s usual stuff (minus the original short story version of Monotone Blue, Escalate) but Nagabe has mastered making gay people that I like. I one Josef and Noi, they are so cute.
Love the cute expressive art style! Joseph is so silly and Noy was adorable. If you want a lighthearted sweet manga about kink and exploring sexuality this is the book for you!
I hope he does more in this style? I have Eat too!
Not really what I expected given this author's other work; even Monotone Blue (which had animal characters) felt very different from this one. Didn't really love it, but the art was cute and I am sure this story will float someone's boat.
