Lunch-bøker #1

Sykt travelt

Rate this book

Lunch is the new big success in Norwegian comics, a comic strip about life at the office, started in 2007. The strip is in itself rather traditional and "safe" but (or maybe because of this) has had tremendous success, being published in more than 50 newspapers around the world, getting it's own regular comic book in Norway, numerous collections and so on.

I can see that this strip might have a mass appeal, but for me it wasn't all that interesting. The cast is full of stereotypes, and almost all male, with one female character thrown into the mix after a while, probably after this had been pointed out to the artist. The main character is fun, though, and as an Apple fan, I enjoyed the iPhone loving designer character.

There is no way you can read this strip without comparing it to Dilbert by Scott Adams, the world's most successful comic strip about office life. The comparison is not favourable to Lunch, as Dilbert feels much more unique and idiosyncratic. I'm no big fan of Dilbert, either, but it does have a certain something that sets it apart from other comic strips. Lunch is more of a safe bet, and thus less interesting, for me at least.

The best thing about this collection is that it contains texts by Lund about the history of the strip, interspersed throughout the book, noting highlights, breakthrough moments etc. That makes reading the book interesting for me as a comics historian, even though I'm not all that enamoured by the strips in themselves.
