She gambled with kings to save her cousin. Now, there’s no way out.

Penelope
An impromptu trip to visit my relatives reveals an unexpected—and unpleasant—surprise. My baby cousin, the sweetest creature to ever walk this Earth, is getting married. It’s not a love match. She’s never even met the man!
I expected my visit to be chaotic. But this? This mad rush to attach two families through marriage? It’s hell.
When I decide to do something about it, to push the buttons and manipulate behind the scenes, I think I finally have the upper hand.
Boy was I wrong.
Don Mancini came from Chicago expecting a Caravello bride, and he’s not leaving without one. It just so happens Caravello was my mother’s maiden name; their blood runs through my veins. Now I’ve taken my cousin’s place—the substitute bride to the most feared man in the underworld. With my family’s lives on the line and no escape in sight, I’m forced to say “I do” to a monster.

Alessandro
The little ball of pure energy had no business standing at that altar, no reason wear the ring meant for another. But when she made herself the sacrifice, when she looked me in the eyes and spoke those vows… something in me snapped.
She thinks she’s trapped. That I forced her into this. But Penelope doesn’t realize—I was never going to let her walk away.
They call me a monster, a beast who rules with blood and fear. She should have been afraid of me. But instead, she stands in my world with fire in her eyes, challenging me at every turn. Testing the control I thought was unbreakable.
I want her more than my next breath.
But in our world, affection is a liability. And if I let her in, if I give in to this heat between us… I might just become the one thing I swore I’d never be. Weak.

Twisted Crown is the first book of the Dynasty of Queens series, set in the Midwest Underworld. It’s a stand-alone darker mafia romance, with no cheating, a guaranteed HEA, and no cliffhangers. A morally grey romance, this book may not be suitable for everyone.

Okay so the plot for this book was what I typically go for but the reason for my low rating is the MMC was immature af.. he wasn’t giving alpha crime boss and the FMC was soooo annoying. It wasn’t the worst book I’ve read but not the best

I like this book, but I will say the beginning was more interesting to men. I would love to see more of Serena. She was a little mean and a little sweet, and yet she was relatable.

First I would like to thank you Alexa for sending me an ARC of this book!!

I was HOOKED from the very beginning. I was OBSESSED with how OBSESSED Alessandro was with Penelope. I normally prefer a damsel in distress but I genuinely did enjoy how feisty and independent she was. I was honestly kicking and giggling for most of the book.

Tropes include:
Mafia romance
Forbidden romance
Arranged marriage
Obsessive/possessive MMC
Independent FMC
Touch her and 💀

Penelope would do anything for her family. So, when her mother falls gravely ill and needs experimental surgery, Penelope doesn’t think twice. She’s ready to sacrifice her future to save her mother’s life. At first, Penelope came across as the quintessential country bumpkin, just a little too naive for her own good. Marching into her uncle’s mafia world, offering to work for his organization based on her minimal (and undoubtedly very sanitized) online research. Girl, read the fine print next time — especially the part about the actual role women play in the mob! But despite her impulsiveness, Penny’s heart is always in the right place, and she’s far braver than anyone gives her credit for. When she discovers her cousin Poppy is being pushed into an arranged marriage, Penelope’s protective instincts kick into overdrive. Enter Alessandro, the brooding, duty-bound Don resigned to marry Poppy... until he meets Penelope. Sparks fly immediately. He’s never encountered anyone quite like her. She’s fearless, unapologetically herself, and unwilling to bow to anyone. From that moment on, he’s a goner, determined to make Penelope his, no matter what it takes. When Penelope helps Poppy escape her unwanted fate, she unwittingly steps into her cousin’s shoes and right into Alessandro’s arms. The dynamic between them crackled with tension; every push and pull, every lingering glance was pure slow-burn gold. Though undeniably drawn to Alessandro, Penelope couldn’t help but feel like a beautiful bird trapped in a gilded cage — a feeling Alessandro didn’t exactly ease by trying to win her over with luxury and expensive gifts rather than understanding what she truly needed. What I absolutely loved was that, no matter how obsessed Alessandro was, he never forced himself on her. He was willing to wait and earn her love (or at least her lust), even if he clumsily believed material things would pave the way to her heart. And even when they finally gave in to the passion simmering between them, there was a part of Alessandro he kept locked away. And it was this wall, his seeming lack of trust that ended up pushing Penelope away. Watching Penelope grow into her new world, earning the respect and admiration of people who initially dismissed her, was a delight. She and Alessandro were absolutely perfect together. She challenged him in every way that mattered, refusing to be steamrolled by his dominant personality (though she didn’t seem to mind his bossy side quite so much in the bedroom... 😉). The banter was perfect and the chemistry? Off the charts. Plus, the groveling? Oh my. Alessandro was so sweet — though, let’s be honest, Penelope was already halfway back to him before he even started.

He mother gave up her ties to her family to settle down and marry her father. Now she is sick and Penny goes to the family to ask for help. She promises her uncle family loyalty as a mafia princess for the help for her mother. She meets him, the Don, not knowing who is at first and her spice and sass intrigue him. So much so that he decides to get out of his arranged marriage agreement to take her for a bride instead. He is a man who has led his family and used the darkness as a shield. But he has met his match in his little Vespina, and she makes him feel things that he never has before. She is angry at being manipulated into marriage, but she can't deny her attraction to the handsome Don, not only his physique but he also challenges her in ways that no one can. When they finally light things up, they are combustible. Their passion is strong and game meets game. He is the strong mafia Don, used to breaking men, yet the petite woman suddenly has the power to break him. The author lets you into his thoughts and feelings as he struggles to not only make sense of his own feelings but also on how to understand his wife. There is even humor in some of the things he tries as he suddenly is feeling things he didn't think he was capable of. She is not like the women he is used to, while a mafia princess by blood she was raised to be strong and scrappy and not afraid of hard work. Shopping and jewelry mean nothing to her, but a handful of wildflowers might win her heart. This is a slow burn in the beginning, taking them awhile to not only set up the story but also navigate to their relationship. It is hot and spicy, and they are two very dominant characters. They negotiate their way to a happily ever after, once they have battled mafia drama and themselves. There is some chaos to this story, that makes it hard to immediately invest in. It felt that there was room to streamline it to make a tighter story. I want to dive in and be rooted in my characters but it took a little time to get there.

She stepped in to save her cousin. She never expected to become the bride.

Penelope walks into her uncle’s world with a plan to stop a marriage and get the money her mother needs. What she doesn’t expect is to end up in her cousin’s place, marrying the most feared man in the Midwest underworld. She’s thrown into a life of power, secrets, and control, and the man at the center of it isn’t about to let her go.

Alessandro came for a contract, not chaos. But when Penelope takes the deal meant for another, he can’t look away. She pushes back, tests his patience, and shakes the control he’s spent years perfecting. He should see her as a threat. Instead, he wants her more than his next breath.

As danger builds and loyalty fractures, Penelope rises fast, no longer just a pawn but a force of her own. Alessandro learns that love is risk, trust is power, and letting her in may cost him everything. Their connection burns, breaks, and rebuilds into something neither of them saw coming.

Penelope starts defiant and alone, but finds her strength in the spaces between resistance and trust. Alessandro begins as a man ruled by fear and silence, but love forces him to change. Their relationship twists from reluctant arrangement into an emotional bond rooted in choice, growth, and fire.

A dark, steamy, enemies to lovers, forced marriage, billionaire mafia romance filled with forbidden longing, power struggles, reluctant trust, and one bed tension, exploring identity, control, vulnerability, survival, sacrifice, loyalty, and transformation. It's about a woman who refuses to be caged and a man who must learn that control means nothing without the person who makes it worth holding.

The Elevator Pitch: A defiant woman takes her cousin’s place at the altar and becomes the unexpected wife of a ruthless mafia king. What begins as a forced arrangement spirals into obsession, power struggles, and a connection neither of them can control. It's a dark, intoxicating romance where trust is earned, control is tested, and love becomes the most dangerous game of all.

“Twisted Crown” is the first book of the “Dynasty of Queens Series”, set in the Midwest Underworld. Penelope gambled with the kings to save her cousin, now there is no way out…. . I have thoroughly enjoyed Alessandro and Penelope’s story with all their trials and tribulations, the ups and the downs, the love and the violence - it is certainly entertaining. The book goes from pages sizzling with hot wanton sex 🥵 to extreme violence to the most beautiful tender moments! I’m very happily hooked - I did not want it to end!

“With that strange magnetism, our gazes collided. An explosion of sparks shot through my traitorous body.
Those bewitching hazel eyes were filled with concern. It did something to me. Dark feelings twisted in my chest. I would give up half my kingdom to keep her staring at me with that searching, beautiful look.”

Penelope’s cousin Poppy was due to marry Alessandro - a mob arranged marriage to someone that she has never met and considerably older. She helps Poppy escape the Mafia - her uncle and the groom to be are furious! He was promised a Caravello bride and since Penny is a Caravello, she is now getting married! “The way she defied me with every fiber of her being. The perfect queen to bring back to my underworld kingdom.” Now the battle begins- will she let her barriers down and give their marriage a chance?

This book had me hooked from the start! Being a Mafia Romance story, it is dark in places, violent at times, passionate in places, full of secrets, loyalties tested and let’s not forget the heat between Alessandro and Penelope. The chemistry between these two is off the page! A thoroughly enjoyable read from page to page, one chapter to the next - at times you are metaphorical “on the edge of your chair” wondering what will happen next. Overall, I would highly recommend this book and you will not be disappointed 😊

Alexa Michaels has this unique ability to create amazing stories. That is a fact. When i lose myself into her pages, i see everything that is described, i hear the sounds and most importantly i feel every emotion to my bone. She delivers to me every written word! I live in her hero's world!

Twisted Crown is book one to her new series Dynasty of Queens.

Tropes:

- Strong but emotionaly unavailable MMC
- Feisty and independant FMC
- Enemies to lovers / Arranged marriage
- He falls first and hard
- Very possessive over her
- She gives him hell
- Serious spice
- Grovel
- HEA

"No" Alessandro shook his head. "You are not a Greenbriar, vespina".
"Oh? What am i? "
"Mine. My wife." Hunger shimmered in his gaze. "A Mancini"

This is only a small piece of how possessive Allessandro is of Penelope and it had my heart melting...
Alessandro Mancini 36, the Don, agreed to marry 19 year old Poppy, the daughter of another mafia head. Until he met her cousin Penelope 24. She set his world on fire and made him feel things and long for things, he didn't even consider possible. When Penelope helped Poppy escape her arranged fate before her wedding to the Don, Allessandro saw his chance to claim Penelope instead.

It wasn't his lust for her that made him want her for himself. He saw her amazing strength, how she never cowered in front of him. He saw the Queen in her!

Their story is captivating, their path not easy and the way to their HEA full of thorns. He grovels epically!!! But when they got there it was exhilarating.

This book is highly recommended. Very easy to read, no trigger warnings, nothing to put you off. Only love and spice!!

I can always count on Alexa’s books to be filled with some of the best FMC characters around, they are always super strong and furious. But with this read especially she knocked it right out of the park with Penelope, I freaking adore her! She is your stunningly amazing headstrong, independent, courageous and a teeny tiny bit impulsive. But no matter, with all that being said she is also super determined to do whatever she can for her mother… This then leads to her having to reach out to her “Made Man” uncle, who omg is a real piece of work.

Now here we meet Alessandro, he is meant to marry Poppy… but everything might be changing once he meets the stunning Penelope aka Poppy’s cousin, and omg does this first meeting make him fall hard and fast for her. He has never met a woman before that is so fearless and unapologetic as her. But in a very lucky turn of events, this then leads to him getting to marry Penelope rather than Poppy, but Penelope is not super happy about this little arrangement at all. Even though Alessandro is a freaking catch of a man. Overall, the banter is what makes this story such an amazing read. I highly recommend this read because this book is a howl.

Twisted Crown is quite suspenseful and a page turning mafia romance. This novel follows the journey of Alessandro and Penelope. The characters are fabulously written and beautifully executed throughout the story. I found both of these characters to be entertaining, interesting and intriguing all at the same time. The chemistry between Alessandro and Penelope is absolutely breathtaking and undeniably irresistible. I thoroughly adored getting to know these two characters as well as witnessing their relationship and story coming to fruition throughout this fantastic book. I am absolutely ecstatic to know that Alessandro and Penelope have a happy ending to their story with them being happy together as a couple. This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading this book. I absolutely did NOT want to set my phone down until I read the last page. If you’re looking for a new mafia romance story to read, then you should most definitely checkout and give Twisted Crown a read. This book is amazingly written, exceptionally balanced with action/romance and phenomenally executed by Alexa Michaels. She continues to showcase what a fantastic author she is with each book I’ve read by her thus far. In my opinion, she puts her all into the books she creates and writes for a reader’s enjoyment. I’m looking forward to reading more fantastic romances from this author in the future.

What put me off was the Mmc.

His regret over his first marriage was evident, sometimes his references to FMC as his "second wife" in his POV, and infrequent mentions of his first wife ( Not every time), were off-putting like "my sweet Elena'', '' late signora Mancini'' ..... It felt very wrong after 70% of the story.

At the story's 90% mark, during his groveling phase, he went to the FMC's house. In that scene, the FMC's father questioned him about marriage, their situation, and his feelings. This dumbass then opened his mouth and said this:

''I saved your headstrong daughter from a worse fate" 😅

I was like ...What? Is that the way to put things right? Immediately, Mr. Darcy's first proposal to Lizzy came to mind. 😅

Something felt off. I don't know how to explain.

Safe read, no OW drama.

I genuinely admired the FMC — she was vigilant, assertive, and far from being a doormat. Whenever she sensed danger, she stayed sharp and instinctively looked for anything nearby she could use to protect herself. That alertness made her stand out.

What truly earned my respect was her clarity of purpose. She wasn’t just surviving she was actively seeking meaning in her life. She voiced her desires clearly to the MMC, fought for her place in their organization, and even planned to pursue college. Her ability to communicate openly, ask for what she wants, and stand her ground was admirable.

Honestly, she’s the reason I’m giving this story two solid star. 🌟🌟

I LOVE Alexa Michael's books

I don't think there has been any of her stories that I haven't enjoyed in some form or another. And that includes the novellas. And in all honesty, there's a reason why I can enjoy rereading them too, because the stories are fantastic and how the author ties together all of them in some fashion makes me giddy for more at all times.

Here we have Penelope and Alessandro, country bumpkin meets mafia man and it is FANTASTIC. A perfect chef's kiss for their first meeting. I can't imagine a better introduction than him being a complete a** about something and she ends up absolutely shoving him right into a fountain and soaking down one of his favorite suits. Which, of course, means it's ruined and there's no coming back from that. I laughed so hard I darn near cried and that was just the beginning.

If anyone needed a strong match for an arranged marriage, this would be in. Because there's no way that Penelope would wither under the pressures of being a Donna. Clearly drama ensues because what does the Don want to do for his Donna? He wants to protect her, as much as possible. But for Penelope, that's literally putting her in a cage when she is used to riding horses in pastures or being able to run free whenever she needed to. It doesn't bode well for our demanding Don, when all he wants is to protect her while he's falling for her.

Long story short, Loved it and am diving right into the next!

Twisted Crown by Alexa Michaels is the first book in the Dynasty of Queens series. I absolutely love Alexa Michaels’ writing and this book is no exception. I loved every second of this book. The plotline was well paced and I could not stop reading. This book had me laughing out loud. This is a mafia romance so there are dark themes so please check the trigger warnings. This was a fun read and I enjoyed every second of it. I am super excited to start the next book in this series.

Penelope was unapologetically herself, hilarious, and strong. I loved her character from the beginning. She truly did not give a shit which led to some pretty hilarious encounters. Penelope and Alessandro had such amazing chemistry. Their meet cute was honestly so great! The tension between these two in the first part of the story was great. Alessandro was a man obsessed when it came to Penelope. I really loved how he never tried to change her and let her be herself. He truly loved everything about her and it was so much fun seeing Penelope give into her feelings for Alessandro. These two gave grumpy x sunshine vibes and I was all for it. Their banter had me laughing out loud. U love when a dark romance had comedic moments. It makes it an even better story for me!

Twisted Crown
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"I would burn my empire down to see this woman come undone."

Loved it! This was my first book by the author, and it did not disappoint. I was interested the whole time and loved the main couple together. I'd definitely recommend giving the author a try. Especially if you love mafia and forced proximity.

Penelope grew up on a ranch. She does anything she can to help her family. Even if it means putting their needs above her own. So, when her mom needs surgery, and they don't have the money for it, she runs to her uncle. Her uncle is in the mafia and, in exchange for his help, she offers to work off the debt. What she doesn't expect is to be married off? But more than that, she didn't expect to be attracted to him or grow to like him. But the heart wants what the heart wants.
Alessandro made a business arrangement with Penelope's uncle. To have a Caravello bride. He wanted Penelope from the first day he saw her and nothing was going to stop him from having her. He loves how fiesty she is and how she stands up to him. Over time, he falls in love with her, but it takes them a while to accept they are perfect for each other.

This was an amazing book to read Alexa Michaels has really done an epic mafia story, full length story that had me smirking at the banter between Penelope and her cousins fiancee that they had never met. Her cousin was young and doesn't want to get married, so the two girls plotted an escape. Penelope (Penny), was one that likes to stir and stir she did until it come back to bite her in the butt. Alexandro, Don Alexandro Mancini, is well known as a monster, so when he was standing at the alter with no bride, he told Penny's uncle he better walk away with a bride that has the same bloodline. Penny ended up married by the end of the day, and ended up causing him grief calling him a monster, he agreed with her over time she realised how wrong she had been. The chemistry between them grew into a hot and explosion of all the feels to go with maybe even love.

Penelope, a country girl, left her home and family to save her mom. She thought working for her uncle, a mob Don, was the best way to do it. But she was impulsive and didn’t think about the consequences. She let her cousin escape, her planned marriage, and didn’t think she’d face any trouble. Reading books about the Mafia is not like real life!

Penelope and Don M had a great chemistry. While she was trying to get used to mob life, he was very patient with her. She had a lot of things to deal with because she couldn’t get used to her new life or accept the consequences.

I enjoyed the book, but I didn’t give it a high rating. There weren’t many realistic things about it. For example, a mob wife would never leave her husband without telling him. Her cousin running away before arranged marriage -Her mob father would go get his child. And she wouldn’t tell her husband that the detective approached her. She wouldn’t communicate with her family (even though they were supposed to be so close).

- Mafia romance
- Arranged marriage
- He falls first
- FEISTY FMC
- Fountain meet cute
- BANTER!!!

The one thing I can ALWAYS count on with Alexa's books is that the FMC is going to be a super strong character. I think she outdid herself with Penelope, who is headstrong, independent, courageous and sometimes a bit too impulsive. She is determined to do what she can for her mother, which includes reaching out to her "Made Man" uncle, who is a piece of work.

Alessandro is resigned to marry Poppy, but when he meets Penelope, Poppy's cousin, he falls hard. He has never met any woman who is so fearless and unapologetic. In a lucky turn of events, he marries Penelope instead of Poppy. But Penelope is none too happy about the arrangement, even though she is incredibly attracted to Alessandro.

The banter! Oh, boy, do I love good banter! This book had me howling, kicking my feet and yelling. So, so good!!!!

Twisted Crown

Alexa has done it again with the start to another wonderful series that I know I’m going to enjoy thoroughly. Penelope and Alessandro are a force to be reckoned with. The pull that is written between these two is simply incredible. I was hooked from the start and only feel more deeply in love with them. She has spunk and fight in her and she doesn’t back down from a challenge which I loved. Alessandro absolutely loved that about her but I was upset to see him not open up to her the way I wanted him to until he realized he may have almost lost her! I saw his change and I felt it. His love for her was what changed him. He wanted to be the man she needed. I absolutely love how she stood up to him about his sister (her sister in law). She found away to free her and I can’t wait to read more to find out what happens. Alexa knows I’m here for all her books so if you haven’t read any. Please do!

I was surprised in the best way by this mafia-arranged marriage romance. It was not the usual story from my perspective.

The FMC Penny was a breath of fresh air. She grew up away from her mafia family on a ranch. She's confident, strong, and sassy. Penny is hilarious. The banter and the chemistry between her and the MMC were so good. I loved that she stood her ground and defended herself and others while also being as sweet as can be.

Loved Allesandro the MMC. He falls first and I just loved his possessiveness. When he says: "É donna mia. She’s my woman." I just about melted in a puddle of goo. All the things he pays attention to about her and the ways he tries to connect with her are perfect.

Penny goes to her mafia uncle for work so that she can help her sick mother. Meanwhile, she finds out her 19-year-old cousin is engaged to a don. She tries to help her cousin escape the mafia life but in doing so she essentially takes her cousin's place.

I just couldn't put the book down.

This was such an amazingly well-written story. I loved the characters and the plot. It was a great mafia romance.

Alessandro is arranged to be married to Poppy. Penelope is Poppy's cousin and is in town to visit. Poppy doesn't want to marry Alessandro so Penelope arranges for her to leave the family and the mafia. Alessandro is very attracted to Penelope so he makes the arrangement to marry her instead.

Penelope was such a strong person. She has been through a lot but she never backs down. When she marries Alessandro her whole life is changed. She has to be guarded at all times which she doesn't like. I loved the chemistry and banter with these characters. Alessandro has never met anyone as strong as Penelope.

I look forward to more from this very talented author.

This was amazing, I loved every word. Penelope is feisty, stubborn, protective, and fun, everything I love in a FMC. Alessandro is strong, dominant, and deeper than what appears on the surface. The whole book is this delicious tension, he is head over heels for her, and it’s sweet watching him buck traditions and learn what it means to love someone, to learn Pen, and what she really wants. And Pen has to give in and accept what she doesn’t, and learn to accept all parts Alessio, and also carve out a path for herself. It was a great frustration wanting to shake her and tell her to just give in, to admit she wants him, and was a sweet relief when it all worked out and we get the perfect happily ever after. Loving this new mafia women series Alexa has prepared for us, with this Twisted Crown and the great teaser intro to this world, Royal Sin.

Started great; finish was kind of meh

I really, really enjoyed the beginning of this book - actually, most of the book. It was mafia, but it had humor and heart. For me, the problems started with the to-be-expected major blow-up and the FMC leaves. But, I truly didn’t get Penelope’s anger and frustration at the level she felt towards Alessandro. Maybe because we, as readers, were given insight into his heart and his intentions, it made it harder to empathize with Penelope. But also, she had omitted telling him a MAJOR thing that had happened. IMO, he had more reasons to be angry with her. Subsequently, the level of groveling he did was waaayyy over the top. The author took his character in a direction that I just couldn’t appreciate.

Sadly, I really didn’t like or connect with Serena, so I’m not planning to read the next book in the series.

Pretty good storyline and characters

This was a good book with a good storyline and characters. You get to see the characters grow as they discover each other and the depth to which they will go to make it all work out.
The author provides you with a world-building that keeps you interested and reading. The MFC is a tough cookie that stays true to her character throughout. It's refreshing as there are MFC who are portrayed as tough but the author then turns around and makes her all too emotional and goes sideways from her true self. That definitely doesn't happen here. The MMC may seem cold but the author shows readers how he has a soft side to him and the reasons why he is the way he is.
There's enough action, drama, and side plots happening that will keep your fingers turning the pages.
I'm excited to see what happens next.

I didn’t just read this book, I devoured it.
From the moment Penelope and Alessandro crossed paths, I knew I was in for a ride. The tension between them is electric, and the way their relationship unfolds? Dark, twisted, and completely addictive. Alessandro is the kind of character who makes you question everything, dangerous, powerful, and somehow still manages to make your heart race even when you know you shouldn’t trust him.
Penelope is no pushover either. She’s sharp, stubborn, and refuses to be anyone’s pawn, which makes their dynamic even more intense. The whole mafia backdrop adds layers of grit and danger that kept me flipping pages way past bedtime.
No cliffhangers, no cheating, just a morally grey love story that hits hard and stays with you. If you’re into possessive anti-heroes, fierce heroines, and stories that don’t play it safe, Twisted Crown is a must.

Picture it.... A "City Slicker" made man as the MMC he is so OTTP and his "Vespina" as he likes to call her since she so eloquently, put him into a water fountain at the airport... Well she is a different breed entirely. She was not brought up in his world, oh no, no, no....
She is straight off the ranch, from small town, USA.. This FMC is as fierce as they come and there is no taming this wild mare...
This was my 1st time reading Alexa Michaels, to say that I enjoyed it would be an understatement. This is by far one of the best books I have read this year. I am going on to read book #2 because I am invested and need to know what happens next with Sandro's sister. Runnnnnn to get this amazing read.

Twisted Crowns is a mafia romance with a fiery main character—and she is not a “take it lying down” kind of gal, which I absolutely loved. There are some beautifully tender moments in this story, along with a few where the main character frustrated the hell out of me.

I’d rate this a 3.5. The writing is solid, and the characters are engaging and intriguing, although I did find a few moments that dragged and some repetitive elements.

That said, if you love mafia romance and cowboy boots, this book might be for you. There is spice, but I found it easy to skip those scenes and still fully enjoy the story. If you’re someone who prefers not to read explicit scenes, you can still have a great reading experience with this book.

Brilliant brilliant brilliant! Oh my so good!

When Penelope stands up against her cousin's arranged marriage she ends up being coerced to take her place to marry Alessandro instead.

Brutal, dangerous and dramatic. Alessandro is a Mafia Don who knew what he wants and takes it. But he doesn't expect to fall for Penelope and her outspoken ways. But she didn't expect him either.

I enjoyed the dynamic between these two. Penelope didn't withstand fools and stood up for herself against him. But he wanted a submissive and expected her to bow to him.

So well done. The chemistry was explosive and Alexa Michaels made that characters so animated I couldn't help but read on. I couldn't put it down.

A highly recommended book!!

This one was not for me. There were just too many silly situations and I did not like either FMC or MMC. She was a little too much of a country bumpkin and he was immature and not very mob bossy. I feel like mentioning bookish things and ARCs was awkward. Neither character was very believable for me.

I did like the premise of a distant cousin who gets involved in the “family business” and I did find it admirable that Penelope wanted to shield her little cousin from the arranged marriage. I also like the different setting than NYC or Chicago, so that was interesting.

I am sure that other people might like this more than me so definitely try it for yourself, it was just not what I expect from a mafia romance.

Amazing start

As always, Alexa weaves a story that’s full of angst, emotion, witty banter and tension! Penelope and Alessandro were absolute oil and water, fire and ice, and I loved it! Every one of their interactions had so much tension it crackled. The slow burn, the push and pull, in the beginning was just fantastic. I love that when Alessandro so a way to have Penelope, he didn’t hesitate. Alexa always writes MMCs that are obsessed and a little unhinged for their women, and Alessandro was just perfect! These two MCs were so stubborn, I wanted to shake them both at times. But their story and their HEA was just wonderful! Definitely recommend this one!

For her mother, Penny would do anything for her including sacrificing herself to the life her mother had left behind. Alessandro knew his intended bride was not for him but a deal was made and he must see it through even though it was her cousin that had caught his eye. The premise and the plot was pretty good. I just couldn't get behind Penny's character. She was portrayed as quick witted but a country bumpkin so it was hard to understand her. She kept making decisions that didn't make sense for someone who supposedly knew the mob and was ready to join it. I didn't get her appeal.
