I'm really enjoying the wacky world of Discord Jones. The characters are pretty amazing and constantly remind me that although Cordi has a propensity for pissing people off. she is also well loved and respected. "Save the Last Vamp for Me" while short (199 pages) is another reminder as to why I love this series. It is also a bit more serious than the first two books and has a moment or two that leaves me saddened.
This time Arcane Solutions us approached by Derrick the vampire ruler to help him discover who has been assassinating political members of the party who believe human's should be willing feeders and never to the death. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending upon how you look at it one of the victims was Merrick, the vampire who was responsible for the torture and death of Cordi's best friend. Cordi wants nothing to do with this job but reels in her hostility towards the vamps when her boss instructs her to take the job.
As Cordi maneuvers through the political world of the vamps, she discovers all is not what it seems and once again, she is attacked and in need of assistance. Of course this doesn't make Nick happy and it seems that they are arguing all of the time. The last straw is when Cordi meets Nick's parents and learns the plan his father has d or her.
While the investigation gets more and more involved, people who Cordi cares about will be at risk and someone is going to perish. I will admit that this made a little sad. In the end, or do will learn more about herself, her new skills and how best to protect her shields.
As I stated earlier, this installment was a little more serious than the other two books but still contains all of the things I've grown to enjoy about this series. There is plenty of action, snarky humor and suspense to keep the reader on the edge of your seat. I can't wait to read the next one!
*chortles gleefully* Bye-bye Nick! Thank fucking god! I feel like a middle-aged housewife that's addicted to soap operas - "No, Katherine! You belong with Brad, even if he is your twin sister's ex-fiance that got lost at sea and miraculously reappeared a year later with amnesia!"
So again, Discord and Co stumble around quite a bit trying to solve the mystery. And again, she just so happens to develop a new power exactly at the right time to save the day. Whatever, I know it's silly and totally unbelievable even in an urban fantasy story. Do I care? Nope. It's too enjoyable to care that it's ridiculous.
I'm just gonna keep on reading the series until there's nothing left to read. Then I'll forget about the series for about two years before reading it all over again and either enjoy it just as much or suddenly hate it. Who knows? Who cares? I don't.
Book three, while not as long (160 pages) as the first two was just as good a book to read and will certainly not disappoint with the shorter story at all.
This story finds Discord getting herself into danger again (no surprise to those of us who have read the series so far), but she is still evolving as a person and one who has multiple abilities. She always puts others ahead of herself and that gives her a very unique character development. I will say without much of a spoiler that I am glad she moves on from one situation, but I am sure that will come back to haunt her shortly. If you read the book, then you will know exactly what I am talking about.
It is best to read the series in order, due to the events that unfold with each book.
Read the first three books back to back. There was a marked improvement with each one. It's good to get to the point where I stop comparing this series to all the previous urban fantasy series I've read. When a series establishes an identity all its own. The Mary Sue vibe of Discord's umpteen powers has also faded.
Love all the characters except the wolfy boyfriend Discord finally gave the boot to. The cases have been interesting. Hmmm. Although, I'd have to page back to remember the mystery from the first book. Number two was defeating the dog fighting ring and the baddies causing suicides to raise a god. And this one was the vampire deaths. Oh yeah, the first one was finding the grimoire.
Great series. Can't wait to pick up the next chapter.
I really enjoyed this book. Possibly more than the last. In fact, when the end came I set my Kindle down and pouted. Totally bummed. That's when a book was truly enjoyed, when you're sad and anxious for the next book and begin reading the same book again because you fear you missed something and enjoyed the book enough to do so. Can't wait for the next one! So happy to have stumbled across this series. -K
I have thoroughly enjoyed the first three books of the series. With a heroine who is 22 years old, you would think this would be a YA series, but you would be mistaken. Though Cordi is young, she behaves as an adult for the most part, and the other primary characters are all older. The mysteries (she is a Psychic PI) are good, as is the action. I look forward to finishing the entire series.
I enjoyed this book, as I did Something to Curse About, after only feeling lukewarm about the original book in the series due to some questionable actions by the protagonist - the largest being the instant jumping into bed with Nick when it becomes very clear through the series that this is very much not a 'Discord action'.
By this I mean I feel like that choice/action was so outside of the character the author created that there was a strong sense of disconnect for me. That the drama that occurred from that choice bleeds through the next two books makes a strong argument for why the author chose to have a very slam/bam start to Discord and Nick's relationship. I just don't know that its a choice I appreciate. It was fairly clear, at least to me, from Logan's first entry that this was the guy that the author intended Discord to be with and she spends the appropriate amount of time through the course of the three books to build this. Great for Logan, not so much for Nick who gets relegated to a foil/a character-development-point/an example of 'what not to do' in a cautionary tale about looking before you leap.
Nick's not a d*ck, he's just not the right guy for Discord. But, once he's relegated to the role of 'the wrong choice' (which, kind of, he is from that first time they have sex the first day/night they meet) its a downhill journey (that speeds up immensely in this book) for him with no real hints that he is a good guy or has good qualities because we are seeing him through the lens of a character that made the wrong choice in being with him. And then... he's just gone in this book. You see this sympathetic view of him walking to his car (and I got a little lump in my throat for him) and then... poof - pretty much no more Nick except for that one scene towards the end in which its very, very clear that he has already become a memory to Discord.
Anyhow, other than this... the plot was enjoyable. The secondary characters are compelling. There is a really sad, sniffly scene that I got to relive a second time through a post-cognition scene (Way to punch me in the gut with that one author!). The world is well-developed, especially as it pertains to those secondary characters, with ones we've met in previous books continuing to wind, with impact, into this story. I'd recommend it. More importantly I'd recommend pushing through the first book in the series to get to the better later ones.
Oh - and so don't want to be all spoiler-y - but I've got a strong guess who the Dragon is. Anyone want to guess with me?
Another 3.5 stars of fun, action-packed "case/monster of the week" type adventure for Discord.
In this one Discord is being reluctantly pushed in to the supernatural big leagues as she's asked to get to the bottom of why several vampire council members have been murdered, and as a consequence someone she loves is put at very real danger. She also learns that some of her past actions may not have been as merciful as she thought they were. Which sounds a lot more serious and dark than the impression the writing actually leaves me with.
I find it rather interesting that my overwhelming opinion of each individual book so far is of a light, fun, humour filled romp as they kick bad guy arse and save the day. Yet quite a lot of traumatic stuff happens that isn't totally swept away at the end of the book when the case is solved and everyone goes home. I'm not quite sure how the author manages to insert quite so much death and mayhem, yet makes me believe this series is just this side of the "fluff" divide. Maybe it's simply because of the sheer amount of time Discord spends arguing or grumbling over past argument with her boyfriend Nick, whilst also semi-ogling her "friend" Logan's hot body whenever she thinks no-one is watching. It doesn't quite tip in to PNR though because the case is definitely always the main focus of the story.
Sort of speaking of Nick, I am glad to say that in this installment Discord dumps his arse like I predicted. I'm really unsure of how much Nick's departure was a deliberate set up from the very beginning and how much was due to how he just didn't seem to integrate very well with where the rest of the story seems to be going. I do hope/suspect he and the wolf shifters come back in a different capacity at some point, because I really want to know why animals only seem to go bug-nuts around the wolf shifters and what is going on with their hair-trigger rage. All rather suspicious, especially given with how insular they seem to be and how Nick basically gave nothing away.
All in all another pleasantly diverting read. I'm already on to book 4, so expect another "these aren't really reviews!" soon!
In this book, while it's good, a bit more of Drummond's inexperience as a writer shows. Partly that's her handling of the relationship issues. Cordi's always seemed emotionally less mature than her age - more age 16 than in her early twenties, and in part, that's attributable to her 3 years in a coma. In this book, however, she seems too much like a high school student, especially around Logan, and Danielle's jealousy. It was all too typical high school romance, as was Cordi's blindness to Logan's attraction to her. It's been obvious since book one. And did Drummond have to make Nick and his family quite so stereotypical? That whole section about Cordi's visit to his family felt contrived and simplistic, and part of a setup to make Logan's clan seem so much better. It's a pity that Drummond is sticking us with that kind of typecasting, right as Cordi's started outgrowing her prejudice about vampires and their relatives. Too many YA books are lazy rehashings of the same old relationship drama between cardboard characters that everyone has read about and no one's actually met. I was really expecting more from Drummond and hope for better from the next book. There's a lot to like about the world Drummond's created - now she just needs to apply that same imagination to her people and their interactions....
I've been reading these stories back-to-back. I'm definitely hooked on the characters, situations and Cordi in particular. This psychic private investigator with a slew of known abilities, is still learning what else she can do. Not happy about it, she's forced to work for a master vampire to figure out who is killing off council members who support the newer rules to only feed from willing humans. Along the way she learns that some of what she'd believed isn't quite true and her circle of support just keeps getting bigger.
And this story has more personal angles than prior ones when it comes to her family and relationships. It's definitely got an emotional element to it. I was going to say that you've just got to love her parents, but then realized how many other characters I'd want to list along with that remark.
I'm truly enjoying the characters, situations and the world that was built and can't wait to see what happens next. A caring magically kick-butt heroine who keeps putting herself in danger to help others is the best reason to keep coming back. Witches, warlocks, and their familiars, demons, shifters, vampires, elves, gargoyles and demon fighting magical dogs also make the stories interesting.
I absolutely adore the world that Gayla Drummond has created here, it's creatures and characters feel fresh and unique in a genre that's saturated with urban fantasy vampires and shifters. I loved the way this story played out and if I only have one criticism it is that is was too short. I could have kept on reading for days. I feel like Discord is beginning to grow up and know her mind a little bit more and I for one and really looking forward to being on this journey with her. Without giving it away I most certainly agreed with how Discord's personal life panned out in this one and can't wait to see what happened next. The vampires were an intriguing bunch here and I definitely want to see more of them. I'd also love to see more of Discord's friends in the future too. All in all this was a great read and I highly recommend it.
Save the Last Vamp for Me begins when Cordi has to help out a master vamp figure out why so many are dying. But it gets even more complicated when a vamp from her past comes out to try to get her again. Not only that but she and Nick seem to be having a few problems, kind of meet the parents type of problems. And then there is a fact that Cordi still needs to find a house. Add all of this together and it's a crazy drama ride for Cordi.
This book was good! It was also sad at times, and a little frustrating. I could't believe a lot of the things that happened in it. But I was also really glad about the things that happened with Nick! I really can't stand that guy. So, now I'm super excited about the next book. This series gets better ever book!!
Ok, I bought all the books in this series in january and I've read the whole serie already twice. I like it a lot. Also it gets better in rereading it.
Yes the main character is really young (and being three years in a coma does put her in borderline minor area) and almost always she behaves like a 35 years old woman. Also, advancing in the serie, she starts becoming a dog hoarder, but that's a very good thing in my opinion. That's the only minor problems with the serie. The rest is just awesome
- ☆★☆★ 4½ Stars - Joy a new favourite series which is getting better with each book. With character development which is engaging, enticing you to read more about Discord, her friends & family. As with all good books I wish these were longer. With such great characters and layering of personal stories linking Discord to all those around her on top of her work, I look forward to the next book with great interest & excitement.
That was fun. So fun that I'm going to jump right into the next book.
It was a bit short, but not in a way that left you feeling unsatisfied. The triangle ended, finally, the bad guy was sufficiently nasty, and we all (including Discord) learned new things about the world and the beings in it.
The only negative I'd have is that it could have been better copy edited, but it wasn't too jarring or too often. I won't downgrade for it, it wasn't bad enough to.
These books remind me a lot of the Rachel Morgan/Hollows series. It's kind of a mix of a lot of other UF I've read. Despite the little grammatical issues, these are fun, fast reads.
The main character is young, but that's built into the plot, so it's hard to complain about it. She just says and does thing sometimes that are naive. Exceptionally so.
Another riveting story in the world of Discord Jones
As ways a gripping story, leaving you with a feeling of investment in the character's lives. Filled with vampires, shifters, psychics and a mischievous god among many others.
It was predicteble, but Discord finally got rid of douchy boyfriend. The overall story in this book, was a bit lacking, but it gave a further introduction to the supes world
