Loch Moigh #3

The Highlander's Folly

Rate this book

A brave fifteenth-century Highlander fiercely devoted to his foster family, Hunter of clan MacKintosh can defeat any man in battle. Thanks to his fae gifts, he can read the intent of his opponents and guess their next moves. But when the faerie Madame Giselle sends Hunter to the present day, he stumbles into a staged battle and rescues a young knight—only to discover that the knight is a woman, and she’s anything but a damsel in distress.

Meghan McGladrey learned martial arts and sword fighting from her father, a time-traveling Highlander himself. To Hunter’s surprise, Meghan is as skilled as any knight. When both of them are pulled back to the fifteenth century, Meghan becomes desperate to return to her time. Hunter, who is pledged to another, begins to fall for the beautiful, brave warrior as they fight side by side against a common enemy. Now, he must decide which matters his honor, or following his heart.

Exciting battles and intoxicating passion reunite in the third Novel of Loch Moigh from award-winning author Barbara Longley.

I hate to say that I had a few issues with this book. I grabbed this one from NetGalley a few years ago because the premise sounded like something I would enjoy since I usually love time travel stories. For some reason, I didn't get around to reading it right away but decided to pull it out of my virtual stack a few weeks ago. There were some things that I did like about the book but the things that I disliked did hamper my overall enjoyment of the story.

I enjoyed the time travel aspect of the story. I thought that the way Meghan is pulled back in time by Hunter was rather unique and added a fun twist to the story. The influence of the fae on events was also a nice twist that easily made everything impossible quite possible after all. The time travel in the story was easily accepted by all of the characters since it has happened before to people that they know and I kind of liked that it was a big secret or something to be disbelieved.

My big problem comes in with the characters, namely Hunter. By the end of the book I kind of wanted him to be sent to a place and time where we wouldn't ever have to see or hear from him again. I haven't disliked a lead character quite so much in a very long time. He was attracted to Meghan but he still planned pursue another woman that clearly didn't want him. He also didn't want any of the other men to have Meghan and wasn't doing a good job of keeping things hands off. I guess he was thinking that she should be stuck in his time period without love while he was free to pursue others. His stupidity seems to almost increase as the book progresses and by the end of the book he has given her all kinds of mixed messages and doesn't seem to even know what he wants.

Meghan wasn't quite as bad but I didn't like how she seemed to fall deeper and deeper for Hunter despite how he treated her. There were a couple of other men that were interested in Meghan and treated her very well but she only had eyes for Hunter. I did like that Meghan was tough and able to hold her own in a fight but I wish we could have seen her demand that Hunter treat her a whole lot better or move on to one of the other more appalling men angling for her attention. I have to admit that I spent a lot of the book rooting for the other guy who never had a chance so you know there was just something off about their romance.

I thought that Phil Gigante did an acceptable job with the narration. I thought that he was easy to listen to but I was not a fan of some of the voices that he used. I thought that all of his female voices sounded really off and it tended to pull me out of the story just a bit.

I think that other readers may enjoy this one more than I did. It is the third book in a series but I thought it read perfectly fine as a stand alone. I do still want to read other books from the series and think I may have more luck with those as long as the characters are somewhat likeable.

I received a digital review copy of this book from Montlake Romance via NetGalley and borrowed a copy of the audiobook from Kindle Unlimited.

Initial Thoughts
I wouldn't call myself a fan of this one but I was able to get through the whole book so there is that. I pretty much hated the Hero by the end of the book. I get that men in this time period did not look at women the same way as we do today but this guy got on my nerves. Hunter took Meghan from the present time back to 15th century Scotland. They were both attracted to each other and it seemed that some other key players were also hoping that Meghan would choose them. Most of the book was Hunter wanting Meghan while pursuing another woman and not wanting anyone else to come near Meghan. It was pretty predictable and rather irritating.

*spoilers*

My Thoughts:

I liked the second book in this series but unfortunately this did not live up to the excitement I had about reading a time traveling highlander romance.

So we already know from the blurb that Hunter is pledged to another woman and I wasn't too worried about that in the beginning because it was barely mentioned but that changed at the 40% mark because that is when the "love triangle" starts. I didn't like that Hunter never told Meghan about Sky. He was just leading her on which was cruel in my eyes because she was falling for him.

I was also beyond frustrated and annoyed with Hunter and his stupid sense of honor. He is determined to marry Sky. And how is he gonna kiss Meghan and then ask for Sky's hand in marriage? I'm glad Sky turned out to be a sweet girl who does not want to marry Hunter because she only sees him as a brother (they're foster siblings). But does that stop him from changing his mind? Noooo. He is even more determined to woo her and marry her. All the while Meghan is watching from the sidelines seething with jealousy which he does not see. I'm also glad she wasn't the only one jealous. Hunter's friend shows an interest in Meghan and Hunter has the audacity to be jealous over that.

At one point Hunter is trying to change Sky's mind again but she still rejects him and two minutes later he is sucking face with Meghan. That's disrespectful to both women. After all this I was just turned off and couldn't connect with the story anymore. I absolutely hate love triangles and this was one in my eyes even though Sky made her intentions clear from the beginning. Hunter was torn between two women and could not make up his damn mind. Hunter wasn't a terrible guy but he had some stupid ideas about love weakening a man and whatnot.

One aspect I liked from this story was that Meghan was a mixed martial artist and a badass fighter. I only wish she could've been strong in demanding respect from Hunter as well. But I cannot see how these highland warriors would so easily accept training from a woman.

And we never even got a resolution about Meghan's parents. They have no idea if she's safe or not. This is paranormal! That could've been possible.

Barbara Longley’s The Highlander's Folly is the 3rd installment of her time-travel, Loch Moigh, series. I’ve read and loved the first two installments, but unfortunately, this one was rather frustrating. And I blame no one but Hunter!

Why? I’ll go there soon, but first a little recap. Loch Moigh started with True to the Highlander where we find that the Fae have been meddling with the MacKintosh clan for a long time. The reasons behind start unraveling as the story, and the series, progressed. I’d recommend reading the series back to back as the incidents happening are rather intertwined IMO.

Alethia, or True as the MacKintosh start calling her, is transported in time by a gypsy woman called Madame Giselle while she was working at a Renaissance fair. True had no idea what was coming, so all of it was very sudden, where she finds herself in the 15th c Highlands, rescued by the Laird’s heir, Malcolm. She ultimately finds a home at Moigh Hall, the MacKintosh Laird’s keep. True is an orphan with mixed origin. She’s part Red Indian. She had been ‘gifted’ ever since her birth, a fact though she tried hiding most of the times, becomes apparent soon because her ‘specialty’ lies in having the visions of negative things. She soon starts having those visions about Malcolm, his father William and how an enemy clan would betray them at a later point. Malcolm and his family believed in True’s seemingly fantastical story because they were familiar with Giselle. People here always sensed that she’s not human. Everybody who saw her, saw her as an old crone, no matter the year. She never changed.

At one point, True saves a little orphaned boy and adopts him. She names him Hunter because no one else knew his real name. When Malcolm and his family guessed behind the reason for True’s time-traveling, he becomes fiercely protective of her. It might also be the case that they both start falling for each-other too. Eventually they marry and Malcolm too, adopts Hunter as his son. When she finally saves them from the murder she kept having the vision of, True becomes a ‘true’ member of MacKintosh clan, revered by everyone.

At the end of the story, they visit Giselle to know the ‘truth’. Its then it becomes clear that Hunter is the pinnacle of all of Giselle’s activities and interest in this clan. Giselle claims to have once married to the first laird of the MacConnell clan. Hunter turns out to be a MacConnell. True already knew she had Fae blood because of her abilities. To their utter shock, she and Malcolm learn that Hunter is Giselle’s grandson, many generations removed. That Giselle’s main reason for bringing True here was to take care of Hunter. True didn’t really have anyone to return to, and now having married the love of her life, being with a family she’d come to love, she decides to make 15th c her permanent home.

Robley, the H of book 2, The Highlander's Bargain, was introduced in book 1. A jolly fellow, Robley is the second son of Robert, William’s brother. He was to follow his father’s footsteps and become a seneschal when he met True and becomes smitten. Though Robley backed off because of Malcolm, he wanted to find a girl like True to love and settle down with. He was pretty sure that he can find someone like that in the ‘future’. And for that, he strikes a bargain with Giselle. Though that bargain brings Erin to him, and a taste of the 21st c for a short while, Robley soon learns in the hard way that striking bargains with Fey can only lead to bigger trouble. When that trouble finds them, he and Erin are returned to his time, without Erin’s consent if I might add, to deal with it.

Erin is gifted too, and her ‘specialty’ lies in detecting people’s health and well-being. She can also cure some basic illness and can provide healing energy to lessen the pain of the worse of them. That’s why Erin made a career in nursing, her goal to become a midwife after her training. She comes from a rather dysfunctional family and her mother’s crazy love-life made her swear off men. But with Robley, things are different. Though worried over a 15th c lifestyle, eventually Erin and Robley fall in love and gets married. But the Fey weren’t finished with him yet. In two different confrontations with Giselle and their High King, some surprising facts are revealed. That Erin is a descendant of Haldor, the High King’s right-hand man, and that Giselle is no old crone after all. She’s the daughter of the High King, Áine! Apparently Giselle knew where to send Robley, and why.

Erin and Robley’s story is not directly linked to this one but True-Malcolm’s is, since they became Hunter’s adoptive parents. Hunter had truly been treated as their eldest boy, even though we find that True and Malcolm had 6 other children ever since.

It’s been a long time since Robley and Erin’s marriage, and Hunter is now a fully grown man. He has always been aware of his special abilities and ties with the Fae. Hunter can sense people’s emotions, can guess their inclinations. I must add here that half of Erin and True’s kids are gifted as well. Personally, I found it to be great, the combo of so many gifted people communicating in a way or talking about things that no ‘normal’ human beings do. But I think they kept their abilities a secret except for the closest of relatives. If anyone did sense anything, no one made any trouble. And why would they. The MacKintosh care for their clansmen as much as they do for their own families.

Gradually Hunter’s vulnerabilities are revealed as well. Though he had been treated with love and respect, he has always felt ‘less’ because of two factors; one, he felt he doesn’t truly belong with the MacKintosh and two, that no one from his own clan ever came to find him created a deep hurt within that he tried hiding most of the times. Moreover, Hunter is a very honorable man who would keep his words no matter what, even if his reasoning are ridiculous. These issues come to play big parts in the next chapters of the story.

Hunter has been away from home for sometimes to ‘experience’ the world, or so to speak and to take part in jousting tournaments to earn rewards. No one’s ever defeated him in any of those fights. He’s rather a legend by now, but Hunter knows he has a slight advantage over the others. His ‘gift’ lets him know his opponent’s moves, so there was no defeating him in any way. This fact humbles and bothers him. Hunter is not comfortable with his gift, but he has no way of blocking it completely. He’d rather he never had any gift to begin with. Bombarded with people’s emotions all day can be tough for even a bada$$ warrior like him. Hunter also doesn’t want to acknowledge his blood relation with Giselle/Áine.

But there’s no avoiding the Fey, in this case his grandmother, when she wants to be acknowledged as Hunter soon finds out on his way home. He’s lured in by Giselle into a Romney fair (fairs do seem to play big roles in these occurring) and rather emotionally blackmailed by her into doing something he’d later regret. Hunter finds himself in another fair, with people wearing queer pants such as True brought from the ‘future’, watching a jousting match between two very unmatched opponents; one is tall and big, the other one short and slight. Hunter thought that the big fellow was taking advantage of a younger boy and instinctively, he went in for a rescue. In a scuffle, he and the short boy is transported back to his time. But such happens when you have meddling Fey relatives! The next, Hunter finds that said relative and the fair, along with her tent, was gone. Not even a single sign remained. So he had no idea the kind of trouble he’d been forced into, neither did he know who he brought with himself. After a while, when her reddish brown hair come tumbling out of the helmet, it’s confirmed that the ‘he’ is a ‘she’! Hunter is completely slack-jawed, trying to figure out what the hell just happened.

Meghan was a secondary character in book 2. Her father Connor had that jousting/medieval sports academy where Robley, during his brief stay in the future, was given a job. He also visited their home on Connor’s invitation. Meghan has 2 elder brothers whom we never met in the course of this series but by mention. Now, her family also is harboring a secret; Connor is another innocent victim of the whimsical Fae meddling with the humans. He was transported into the future completely by accident and had no way of returning to his time in the 13th c Ireland. Somehow he managed to eke out a life for himself, but he, Meghan or any member of his family doesn’t possess any special power. It becomes apparent later that Meghan and her brothers were raised with the old sentiments and values of Connor’s time to certain extent. That actually helps Meghan along the way of her sojourn into 15th c.

From childhood, Meghan trained in mixed martial arts and some other athletic sports, thanks to her father. She has been a part of her father’s academy, as well as took part in the Renaissance fair Erin used to work at, which is also one of Connor’s ventures. That day, she was minding her own business when Hunter snatches her back to the past. Just like that. She had no way of knowing anything, so she was in no way prepared for this very unexpected and scary, if I might add, journey. But Meghan proves to be made of sterner stuff.

When they soon figure out that they’ve been duped, Hunter offers Meghan his protection until he can find a way to get her home. Meghan is scared, yes, but she’s not completely scared witless. When Hunter explains to her some of the medieval ideologies, she gathers she needs the protection of a man to avoid danger. And the sexy, kilt-clad Sir Hunter seems to be the best option at the moment. Meghan is more hopeful when she learns of Hunter’s relationship with Robley and Erin. At least she’d not be completely without a known face while her stay here.

When Hunter’s other knight buddies catch up with them, they’re surprised to find a girl with him. They’re also surprised the now absent fair but only one knight called Cecil makes a scene. He begins panicking, confusing Meghan with the Fey and condemning her of trickery. Though they try to squelch his suspicion and move on, Hunter senses that Cecil might pose a threat to Meghan’s safety, which means he needs to keep an eye on him too. On their way, they met Robley, who luckily heard the news of Hunter’s return and came to fetch him. But what takes Robley completely by surprise is to find Meghan among them. He instantly knew something is wrong and immediate offers her his protection. Robley deems it as his responsibility since he knew Connor personally.

Funny thing is, though Meghan thought it’s been only 7 yrs. since Robley’s visit to the future, turns out, time doesn’t work that way. I was also surprised when it was said that Robley has aged, when by my estimation (if I remembered his age correctly in book 2), he should’ve been in his early 30s. But later it was explained that it’s actually been 16 or so yrs. since Meghan last saw them, though she’d only aged 7 yrs. since then!

Hunter wanted to keep Meghan at Moigh Hall where his foster parents await his arrival, but Robley insists to take her to Meikkel Geddes. Though Meghan doesn’t like being away from Hunter, she’s nevertheless excited at the prospect of seeing Erin and meeting their brood. Hunter on the other hand, can’t wait to see his family, especially Sky, Malcolm’s eldest daughter. And we learn that he’d made this pledge in his childhood (think I vaguely remembered something like that) to marry Sky when she’s of an age. Hunter means to keep his word now that she’s old enough, and he has enough coins to live comfortably. As Hunter sees his family for the first time in years, I loved meeting Malcolm and True’s brood alongside him. He’s welcomed back with open arms, among laughter and happy tears. And though he missed Sky’s presence, who was visiting her aunt at that time, Meghan’s thought is not far behind. How come he’s already missing her when he’d just met her?! Hunter doesn’t know, and he can’t say that the thought made him happy.

In due time, when Sky finally arrives home, Hunter begins pursuing her, albeit in a very non-romantic manner. It was clear that Sky had no such feelings for Hunter. I can see why, he’d always been the big brother to her! Yet Hunter kept emphasizing one thing; he made a promise and he must keep it. No one can talk him out of him. He even asks for Malcolm’s permission, who is reluctant to give it. But the final verdict was left at Sky’s hand, who is not interested at all. Guess I said that, but this keeps happening over and over again. At one point, an ailing Robert (story in book 2) passes away and the whole family reunites in Moigh Hall for his funeral. Meghan accompanies them and so happy to see Hunter! It’s at that time, Tieren, Hunter’s closest friend, confides in Meghan about Hunter’s interest in Sky. This does jolt Meghan out of her daydreaming. She’s quite hurt, feeling like a fool that she let her thoughts run amok, when he had someone else in his mind all along!

Now, Tieren was a great character. He wanted Meghan right from the beginning and it felt genuine. Maybe not love at first sight but he was very impressed with Meghan’s fighting skills, especially when at Moigh Hall, Meghan is permitted to train the men in mixed martial arts. In fact, everybody is impressed, including Hunter. And he can’t stand Tieren anywhere near him, even though he’s still adamant about sending her away. He wants her but he’d still marry Sky, yet he won’t let Tieren near Meghan. If Tieran ever does, he’d start growling at him, threatening him. I mean c’mon! I felt so much for Tieren because it was worse. Meghan had no interest in him apart from friendship. I hate to see a perfectly nice character getting hurt, but there it was! I don’t think I have to spell out that I dislike love-triangles.

Though Meghan was initially jealous of Sky, she soon found out that Sky’s not a big threat to her. I liked it that Meghan knew what she wanted and tried to convince Hunter throughout the story. But he was determined to ignore his feelings. Yet that wouldn’t deter him from kissing her senseless whenever he can, then pushing her away over and over and over again, and I can’t explain how frustrating that was for me! Meghan would’ve stayed with Hunter but seeing how stubborn he is, she finally begins giving up. She was also feeling guilty about hurting Tieren but she tries her best to be gentle at her rejection. But it’s never easy, is it?

Though Hunter was sure that he can break Sky’s defenses given time with his persuasion, at one point, Sky puts her foot down and refuses to even consider this proposal, causing a slight rift in their relationship. I can’t blame Sky since Hunter was the one who was being dumb. I mean I read this boy growing up from a 4 yrs. old, I must’ve missed something. I wonder what went wrong and why he refused to see logic or use his brain? I know Meghan agreed with me wholeheartedly! At one point, it gets into his thick head that there’s no chance for him with Sky. At the same time, a few men from the MacConnell clan come with big news for Hunter. Apparently, he’s now the Baron DúnConnell since his grandfather was the laird. The whole perfidy behind Hunter’s past is suddenly dumped on the poor guy. His Fae-hater grandfather was the reason why his father, who had the gifts, left his clan, and why his mother was forced to hide him. Now Hunter has a new mission in life; saving his own clan from distraction now that it’s without a leader.

Meghan made it clear many times that she’s a smart girl, except when it came to Hunter. She can see Hunter’s vulnerabilities, as I mentioned before, of always having the feelings that he didn’t belong anywhere. Even though he was loved, there was that emptiness inside Hunter that never went away. His mother and grandmother’s death hasn’t been easy, and even though he was very young, he remembered the worst days of his life before True saved him. All in all, he was rather scared of taking chances. And he was so scared of losing Meghan that he won’t even give her a chance in his life! I mean, yah sounds ridiculous and Meghan tries her best to convince him with logic, but that oaf won’t listen to anything. Moreover, when he’s made laird of his clan, Hunter knew there’s danger ahead, so taking Meghan with him was out of question. According to him, it’s for the best that Meghan is send back to her time. He acknowledges that he loves Meghan but he’d marry for duty once he secures his clan’s future. Oh boy!

I tried to understand like Meghan did, but I also knew that if he considered all the possibilities, he would’ve found a way. When they learn of Áine whereabouts, they start preparing for the journey. No one could still convince Hunter otherwise. But what totally ticked me off was the fact that he ends up having sex with Meghan even knowing he’s sending her back, though Meghan took it as a positive sign. I didn’t like it at all, especially when later he starts sprouting the same stuff, breaking her heart all over again. I was so mad, I wanted to bash this thick skull with something and be done with it! *SMH*

Later though, near Áine’s hut, Hunter refuses to accompany Meghan knowing he’d gone low this time. But things would soon start unraveling and Hunter would finally start considering the consequences of losing Meghan. He knows he loves her but can he, at all, live without her? I know Áine plays her part for sure and I’d say Hunter did beg prettily to her for returning Meghan to him. Oh that almost melted my heart... almost, but he annoyed me for such a long time, it was too late I’m afraid to change my mind completely.

There was villain and he did try to harm Meghan a couple of times but I wasn’t that into that part. I was too embroiled in Hunter’s drama over Meghan. But when the story ended, I began thinking... We were never shown Meghan’s parents and siblings’ reactions over her time-traveling. Also, it seemed that Meghan was fine with never seeing her family ever again. How is it possible when her transportation was so sudden?! It just didn’t feel right. Shouldn’t there have been a reunion to explain what was going on? As a closure or something?

Anyway, I’m hoping that this is not the end of this series, and that Tieren has a chance to find love. Otherwise, it’d be a very disappointing end. 3.5 stars.

It's been a while since I read a time-travel romance. This was pretty good. The heroine, Meghan, is hurtled back into the past. There was no weeping and pitching a fit and not understanding what was going on because Meghan's father was transported to the future, so she knows all about time travel. Meghan is brought to the past by our hero, Hunter, who is coerced into "saving" Meghan by his fae granddam, Aine.

Hunter had to be the most obstinate hero I've read in a long while. He realizes he has feelings for her and continues to ignore them, right up until the very end. Everyone sees that he loves Meghan, but he keeps denying it. Meghan was a great heroine for Hunter though. She knew he loved her, and she admitted she loved him, but she was strong and brave and accepting that she would not change his mind. I wouldn't have accepted his decision as easily as she did :) Thankfully, he came to his senses and they got their happily ever after.

Highlanders Folly , gets a big 5 happy Kilts from me!

I just love a book that hits a bunch of my favorite genre's and this one does, little paranormal with the Fea, hunky highlanders set in a historical time travel romance!

I have yet to read the first two books in this series but it in know way affected my enjoyment of the book, though the author incorporates Character's from the firs two books, she provides just enough backround information to keep the book moving along well and not give away too much about the previous storylines!

Hunter Of Clan Mackintosh , due to his fae blood can sense the intent of other people, their feelingsso when traveling home from the continent with his freinds and their hard won fortunes, the Romany fair in the middle of nowhere sets his instincts to full alarm ! Sure enough what he discovers there is his grandam Aine of the tuatha de dannan in her human for of Madame Gisellle seeking a favor, whic she guilts him into. Hunter finds himself thrust into the future in the middle of a sword fight in which a much smaller defender is being taken advantage of, he quickly steps in to defend the smaller person and defeats the opponent , grabs up the fallen comrade and runs right back into the past, not realizing till he returns that he has grabbed a young women dressed in male garb , but also just taken her from her time and apparently a mock battle with her father. Conveniently , Madame Giselle is gone along with the fair!
Meghan Magladrey, finds herself in the 15 th century with a handsome domineering Scott who just took her from her time and family and she is beyond aggravated and puts her mixed martial arts training to good use ; then demands to be sent home!
Hunter feels terrible , and he wants to send the the lass home to her time , but with Giselle gone it is just not going to be easy, but he promises her on his honor that he will find Giselle and have her return Megan!

As these two travel together the attraction for each other only grows stronger, Hunter respects her, she feisty can defend herself and beautiful and at the same time something about her makes him want to protect and defend her.
Hunter, at first finds it surprising that Megan is taking this all as well as she is, but it turns out her father was taken from his time and sent to the future, so the time travel not a surprise, which only ups his respect for her even more!
But , Hunter can not allow himself to get to involved , to take what he desires has plans and vows to fufill, such as marrying his foster sister Sky it is part of the plan. He will be a true Mackintosh then not just a fosterling. Hunter has security issues as a result of loosing his mother and grandmother a a young age which makes it difficult for him to allow himself to love !

The interaction between these two characters is wonderful and the storyline created a book that i could not put down ! Danger love fae and thick headed Highlanders along with great supporting characters serve to add tons of intrest to the plot line.
Does Hunter eventually realize Meghan is perfect for him? Does Madame Giselle send her back to the future? Does Meghan still want to go back to the future?

Loved this book. The heroine who came from the here and now was feisty and kick-ass. She didn't let anyone push her around. And the hero Hunter, from the past, was protective and shocked by this beauty. He thinks he wants to marry a woman he grew up with. He'd always planned to marry her, but once he meets Meghan, he's befuddled and smitten. While he stubbornly attempts to press on with his plans, he can't stop thinking about her, and must come to terms with the fact that not everything is under his control. Gives me the warm fuzzies!

This was a huge disappointment compared to the first two books. Not anywhere near as good as the first two books. Hunter's stubbornness was dragged too long and it became annoying. The reasons for Meghan being necessary to him was not solid enough. The plot was a bit weak and conflicts unclear....The thing that I loved about the past two books in this series was the heroes Malcolm and Rob. Hunter was a disaster in comparison. He lacked all the qualities of a good Scottish hero. I would not worry about reading this book in the series, you are not missing much.

Sweet story

Great read...it dragged a bit and I wanted to punch a Hunter in the face throughout the story. What a lame brained man!!

Hunter was just so stubborn not to see the truth in front of his face. Hunter for all his strength, success, and kind hear has such issues with his upbringing and self. Deep down he doesn't feel worthy or good enough and tends not to see the truth right in front of his face! His family loves him no matter what. He argues with everyone and then fate punches him right in the face!

I liked Meg and how tough she was. I laughed out loud when she really got to see what a Scot wears under their kilts! Meg was way different from the other female characters before her. I liked how they brought her family back around to the story. She I think overcame more then her counterparts True and Erin.

Our friendly gypsy/Fae had her hands all over this one...great twists and action.

Great story again started listening and then just had to read it to find out what would happen!

A fierce Highlander from the fifteenth-century, a faerie’s plot and a modern day time-traveling maiden. What’s not to love in that combination?

Read on for my thoughts on The Highlander’s Folly. No true spoilers, promise.

This is the third novel in this series, and I was a bit concerned because I have not read the others. Sometimes you can jump into a series anywhere and others, not so easy. There were enough comments about previous stories in the early chapters that I could read Hunter and Meghan’s story without feeling I had jumped into the ending. While not a stand-alone, in my opinion, it didn't feel like I was lost.

When a Highlander knight crosses paths with a modern day martial arts instructor – well, sparks are going to fly. Then add into the mix that Meghan is totally unsurprised by the notion of time-travel and you add another level to the story.

I enjoyed the richness of details of the times, conditions and how life is lived day by day. I’m not so sure that Meghan did though. It is a major adjustment from taking part in medieval tournaments for fun, and actually living them in a life and death situation.

Hunter is a man of his times, arrogant most of the time, sure that his way is the right way, honorable to a fault. Even though he has fae blood running through his veins, he is none too pleased to have been tricked by Giselle into bringing Meghan back in time to her past.

It was fun deciphering the two languages used. Hunter’s local brogue with its meaning, and Meghan’s modern day conversation that often baffled Hunter. Overall, this was a charming, sexy, enjoyable tale. Time-travel is always a fascination, and the author handled this aspect of the story extremely well.

The only part of this novel I took a bit of exception to was Hunter’s honor where it came into play where Sky and Meghan were involved. He knew his intentions toward Sky from the start, he had considered himself betrothed to her from the moment of her birth. Yet he didn't mention this to Meghan, even when he was having conflicting emotions about her. He was falling for the maiden from the future, but he didn't tell her that he was spoken for. That bothered me – perhaps it is simply true to the nature of the “medieval beast”, but it put his honor into question in my mind. Again, in my opinion, perhaps you will see his actions differently.

I enjoyed this novel very much – enough to go searching for the earlier novels in this particular series. That in itself says it was a very good read for me.

I would recommend this one. It was face paced, action packed and a passionate love story with a satisfying conclusion.

ANOTHER GREAT STORY IN THE LOCK MOIGH NOVELS!!

Highlander's Folly is another 5 Star Hit story by Barbara Longley. This is the story of Hunter who is the foster son of Malcolm and Lady True from bk 1 "True to the Highlander". After being away from home for 5 years he has now returned but on his way home he encounters his great grandmother centuries removed Madame Gieselle who poses as a Gypsy Fortune Teller,. Giselle is really a Fae Princess of The Tuatha De' Danann. As we have learned from bks1 & 2 Giselles is very mischievous. Hunter realizes she saved his life and restored his hearing when he was 4 yrs old. So Hunter is weary of her becasue of her sending his foster family remember into the future and back in time. Hunter wants to show is thanks for her saving his life. Giselle's real name is Aine. She tells him she needs his help to write a wrong. Hunter agrees to help her and she whirls him into the future in the middle of a Sword fighting demonstration, at the Renaissance Fair In Shakopee, Minnesota the year 2010. The same period of time Lady True and Erin are from.

Megan MacGladery is sword fighting with her father Connor who we meet in bk2 "Highlanders Bargain". Hunter being dropped on to the scene believes Meghan is a young lad and is being attacked by a much bigger older Knight. It is not until he intervenes and fights off her father and scoops Meghan up in his arms and they are hurled back into the past the year 1441. Hunter realizes what his has done and that the lad is a young lady. Now he knows his grandmother has been up to her old tricks. This is were the adventure begins. Megan knows the story of her father being sent into the future and she also met Robley when he was sent to the future. So She believes Hunter when he is apologizing to her and trying to explain why he took her.

Hunter starts to fall in love with Meghan but he believes he betroth himself to his foster sister Sky Elizabeth when she was born. Hunter fights is ever growing attraction to Meghan. We are revisited in the story with all the wonderful characters from bks 1 and 2. We also, finally find out the story about Hunter and how he came to be orphan and who he really is. This was a good story! Hunter, a 15th century knight is bringing his fortune from abroad home. They have been gone for five years and have been successful in part due to Hunter’s fae abilities. It’s very useful in battle being able to know what the enemy’s next move is going to be. But when the faerie, Madame Giselle, sends Hunter to present day, he lands in the middle of a staged battle at a Renaissance Fair. He rescues a young knight from what he perceives to be a certain death, by bringing him back to the 15th century. Only the He turns out to be a She –Meghan-and she fights back.
Meghan is a strong girl who trained in mixed martial arts with her father. They stage demonstrations at the fairs. When she’s plucked from the fair and transported to the 15th century, she is scared. Not knowing the reason the fae would do this to her, she’s overwhelmed and distraught. Hunter vows to find the fae and return her to her proper time. This must be a mistake.
As Hunter and Meghan battle together against enemies, Hunter realizes she’s just as brave and capable as any of his knights. He is developing feelings for her and he shouldn’t as he’s promised to another. But he likes having her around. He is torn by the vow to return her home, and the dream of keeping her with him. When the time comes will he honor his vow and send her home? Even if it goes against what his heart is telling him?
The Highlander’s Folly is book three in Barbara Longley’s Loch Moigh series. You do not have to read books one and two in the series to read this book. The dialect takes a bit of getting used to but once you do, the story flows. I love how the time travel weaves its way throughout. We are given just enough to keep us interested and wanting more. The tale is very intriguing and it keeps you guessing until the very end.

I received an ARC for an honest opinion.

This book was about Hunter & Meghan. Meghan is whisked back to 15th century Scotland by Hunter. Hunter is put in this position by the wiley Fae Aine, his grandmother several times removed.

His vow is to return her to her time but does she want to go? Does he want to her go? What's a romance without the angst!

Hunter does have some Fae gifts as does several of his foster family. This of course is not widely known because he or they could be put to death because of it.

Meghan in her time did re-enactments at Midieval Renaissance Fairs and taught Fencing and Mixed Martial Arts at her dad's business. Not only does Hunter see her beauty but her skills and bravery.

I think one of the parts of this story that really impacted me was when Meghan killed a man that was of course trying to kill them. It sent a shock through her and I think it was when she realized she was no longer in her century and life was very different here.

I loved the interaction between Meghan and Hunter. It was so funny at times that it made me laugh out loud! She would use a present day slang on him and he would just be dumbfounded. I could just picture the look on his face!

They had a very honest relationship also, except for when they were dealing with their own feelings of course!
I think Barbara Longley is going to be put on my "Authors to read" list and I will be looking for more of her books.

I absolutely loved this book! Why? Because life is as it should be at the end and will continue to get better with time.

This was an exciting romance filled with lots of adventure and passion from two very different people. You get a lot of knightly action from one man can sense things from his opponent when engaged in battle. Hunter a highlander of clan MacKintosh is undefeated in battle because of his fae gifts.
He is devoted to his foster family and is esteemed by others. But when Hunter a 15th century man is tricked by the faerie Madame Giselle who sends him to the present day, he encounters a knight in a sword fight. He rescues the knight only to find himself and his unhappy friend brought back to his time period. When the young boy slings his helmet off, Hunter realizes it's a woman and she fights back. This is funny when you see a woman who definitely stands up for herself, because Meghan is skilled in sword fighting she learned from her father a time traveling fighter himself.
Now Meghan is a no nonsense woman who gives Hunter an ultimatum: get her back to her time or there will be the heck to pay. Hunter wants to get the woman out of his hair, but one thing holds him back. He has fallen for this spirited woman and things get complicated from get go.
You see, love can reach beyond the limits of time. If only these two can see it that way.
Thanks Net Galley from the ARC title for an honest review. Ms Longley has done it again with the delightful tale that everyone will enjoy.

Wonderful book and spectacular narration.

I started laughing right off the bat. It just struck me funny that a male’s member was called a “tarse” and his rear-end was called an “arse.”

Anyway, I’m glad this book is not 300 or 400 pages because there was a lot of angst already, and I do hate pages and pages of angst. I mean, really? Hunter wanted to marry Sky because he was concerned about his feelings for Meghan, afraid he can’t do his job if he’s constantly thinking of Meghan? The stupid angst lasted through the whole book but it was not so bad as to ruin the book because there was so much more going on.

I loved Hunter, despite his angst, and Meghan, because she was so kick-ass. I also liked Tieren, Allain, Sky and Aine. And it was nice seeing Malcolm and True, from True to the Highlander. As well as Robley and Erin, from The Highlander’s Bargain.

All three books were just wonderful time travel books.

There is some great sex in this book so if you're not into that then find another book to read/listen to.

I have to say that I don’t usually like male narrators but Mr. Gigante is just awesome. His women’s voices are spot on and our luscious hero, Hunter, has a voice you could only dream about whispering in your ear. I would not hesitate to listen to him again. Such a marvelous voice.

Methinks Giselle is laying on the guilt before she lowers the boom.

Ah, that explains why she's taking this so well.

I like how the author has seamlessly woven in the characters from the first two books.

Why do men think they can fix everything, simply because they are men?

Is it just me, or is Cecil always the squirrely one in books and movies?

God, he's hot.

Lusting during a funeral,Meghan? Shame on you, haha!

So marrying your adopted sister will make you a better fighter? Good plan.

Ha, that's what she said.

Poor Edward. He's expecting "Witch! Burn him!" Instead, he gets "Yeah, mkay. And...?"

Arrogance will get you every time, Cecil.

Victoria's secret, indeed.

Hasn't she she proved she can take care of herself? She saved your chauvinist butt, didn't she?

Ha, a Highlander afraid of an old lady! Hilarious!

Hmm, as usual I can't wait for the next book in the series. Tieren needs a happily ever after, as does Sky (with someone she's not related to, for God's sake).

This was a good story. It was an open book in that it didn't use gratuitous blood and killing. There is some but only when needed. There is a good bit of paranormal here. There is time travel involved mixing up lives. Hunter was returning from Europe in 1441. His granddam is a Tuatha De' Danann and she sends him into the future where he crashes a Ren Faire and returns with Meghan when he thinks the sword act is real. He vows to send Meg home but first he has to find his Gran again. Hunter was fostered and doesn't believe that makes him part of the family. There is a spoiler later in the story. He has vowed to marry a girl and now falls for Meg. There are a great lot of spoilers in this story. Barbara has put together a realistic story line. She has developed some very life like people into this story. I would recommend this book to Romance, Historical Paranormal readers. Don't pass this book up. You will miss a good read. Enjoy! I have this book for an honest review for NetGalley.

4.5/5 stars

ARC copy
I have to admit that when I first started this book I had an oh no moment when it started out like one of those books you read and say "Oh great, the author has a thesaurus." However, the book quickly becomes interesting and thankfully is not one of 'those' books.

The plot is fantastic with time travel, fae, and deceit. I loved Meg's character. She is strong, intelligent, and she can take care of herself. Hunter's character was a little emotional for me, but that's more of a personal preference. His character has a great back story and I love how everything changes for him at the end (even if he is a complete idiot when it comes to women).

Overall, interesting story and a great read. I'm looking forward to more highlander romance from Longley and maybe a story for Tiernan.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book -- it was entertaining and romantic, and I love Barbara Longley's writing style!

Like True and Gwen in Books 1 and 2, Meghan is another strong, independent and resourceful heroine. She's not helpless by any means, and, like the other two, struggles with the implications of being such a woman in 15th-century Scotland. I laughed and groaned at some of the scenes, and I love how Barbara can make me do that.

The all-grown-up Hunter is the consummate honor-bound knight whose journey to his happily-ever-after left you clutching your heart and sighing. His growth was a trial by fire in a way, and it made the story that much more compelling.

I love this series, and if there are going to be any more, they'll be an automatic pre-order for me. :)

OMG!! This book was fabulous! First I am not new to the time travel story line but I like that it is Hunter who goes and gets Meghan. Even though this is the 3rd book in this series it stands well on its own and I have not read any of the other books. There were times when I wanted to reach through the pages and just slap Hunter. In fact I love when his friend tells him how utterly stupid he has been. It is so obvious how much Hunter actually cares for Meghan but he is stubborn while she is busy trying to fight her own feelings and get back to her time. This was a journey I was thrilled to go along on and enjoyed every second!

I was expecting book three from sometime now. Since I read Far From Perfect, I've seen every Barbara's book published for kindle. I like her ideas and style very much.

For whom this is the first novel it has strong, realistic characters, a great plot and a hot love story. And to the other novels fans It's nice to read more about Hunter.

I don't want to be a spoiler so I will say that this book fulfill my expectations, it remains within the series style, it has a great love story, funny and action scenes and it's the type of book you don't want to put down until you finish.

I don't know if Barbara intends to write more Loch Moigh novels but I like to know what happen to Connor and would be nice to have a guy traveling to the past.

Fools rush in...

With the help of the fae, another young couple find the road to love and happiness wrought with many obstacles chief of which is our hero's vow and stubbornness in adhering to it! I liked the story and characters, especially ones previously met, who stayed in character! Delightful reading, truly romantic, I highly recommend!

Highlander's Folly is the third book in the Loch Moigh time travel series and this is Hunter and Megan's book. I was so excited to read about a grown up Hunter. Since the first book where he was introduced as a deaf, bedraggled, orphaned little boy I was drawn to Hunter and wanted to see him in the warm embrace of his heart's desire. But unlike with Malcolm and Robely, I just didn't feel that bone-deep love between Hunter and Megan. Insta-lust sure, but no magical connection between these two. I liked that the sex scenes were well-written and a minimal but I never felt that their relationship had depth or emotional impact. Megan was Giselle's choice for Hunter, so she made it so.

I thought that Tiernan was a far better match for Megan. Tiernan was willing to follow her back to the future while Hunter was dead set on fulfilling his duty once he knew his true identity. Megan's stubborn streak made her Hunter because he was harder to conquer. Also, it felt like Hunter was just following in his foster father and cousin's footsteps with grasping himself a woman from the future. At least with True and Erin, their time travel had a purpose, meaning. Megan being transported back to in time, seemingly so that Giselle could play matchmaker for Hunter, was a convenient reason to transport another 21st century woman from a Renaissance fair to 15th century Scotland. Giselle admitted that she was indirectly responsible for Megan's father Connor falling through time from 13th century Ireland, so it seems she hurt this man twice, in the past by the loss of his family and his heritage and in the future with the loss of his beloved and only daughter. Even at the end I still could not fathom why it was necessary for Hunter to need a helpmate from the future to fulfill Giselle's dream of rebuilding their clan.

However, it was the action, adventure, and magic that were the stars of this book. Barbara Longley's lyrical writing realistically transports the reader back in time. I could smell the foods cooking in the hearth, sitting in the solar with the family, and hear the music playing in Loch Moigh's great hall. The life of 14th century Highlanders, from the blacksmith to the men training in the lists, was as vivid and alive that I could visualize life in those medieval time.

The revelations about Hunter and who he was powerful and bittersweet. This series could have ended as a trilogy with Hunter and "Highlander's Folly" since Giselle nixed his lifelong mission to marry Sky. The first two couples are aging, their children growing up, and their lives nicely settled as they grow into the twilight. I enjoyed this series primarily because of the time-travel/Highlander theme, so I really can't fathom how Sky Elizabeth's book would add much more to the story since her journey is in the future. Despite the lack of chemistry between Hunter and Megan, overall, this series has been an exquisite journey and reading experience.

I didn't know what to expect from The Highlander's Folly as I didn't read the others in the series. The book opens and quickly outlines what was previously missed enough that I was able to follow along easily.

Meghan is a modern woman stolen back hundreds of years by a blundering knight, Hunter. The two have sparks flying between them from the very beginning and it makes for an interesting story. Up until the point Sky enters the story and it changes from a then meets now to a love triangle. I don't like love triangles. Sky isn't interested but thick headed Hunter just doesn't care. He can change her mind. But he wants Meghan and cannot seem to keep his lips to himself. He needs to be knocked on the head. Several times. Like a lot.

The story progresses with Meghan's modern day mentality. Herself being a mixed martial artist who is teaching Hunter's men how to improve their battle skills. To a happy ending. The only thing missing for me was closure with her own parents. The story was nicely woven with some very touching parts here and there. A little bit of magic sprinkled liberally throughout and a bunch of hot manly men, in kilts.

I received this ARC for my honest and unbiased opinion.

Brilliantly Enjoyable

The Highlander's Folly is another 5-star read from Barbara Longley! I absolutely loved being transported back in time to fifteenth-century Scotland. Barbara makes the journey oh so enjoyable and she makes the reader actually feel as if she is right there in the mix of things with Hunter, Meghan and the rest of clan MacKintosh! This book is exciting, filled with comical moments, suspense, intrigue, mystical happenings from the fae and most of all romance and love. From beginning to end Hunter and Meghan's story is filled with trials, tribulations, missteps, hidden feelings, angst, mystery and then the ultimate reward. I was surprised and never expected the news Hunter received which changed his life and the life of "from the future" Meghan. I absolutely loved this book as well as the other two books in The Novels of Loch Moigh series! They do not disappoint and are brilliantly enjoyable from start to finish! Read them all! Thank you Barbara Longley for filling so many of my hours with books that have captured my heart, especially The Highlander's Folly!

***ARC from NetGalley in Exchange for an honest review***

The third in the Loch Moigh time-travel series can stand-alone but I enjoyed it because I was able to read the first two. This one deals with Hunter, a child (but a major character) in the first book. The main characters were written well though it bothered me some that Meghan wasn't as devastated as I though she would be being thrust into the past with no way of getting back home to her family...the women in the previous books were mostly loners or had little to no family so I could understand their willingness to let go.

The story flowed well and I loved being able to "visit" with the past characters. The push and pull between Hunter and Meghan was palpable as is Hunter's indecision and angst. Recommend.

Wish the next one would deal with someone from Loch Moigh sent to and staying in the future.

Another wonderful escape through Loch Moigh & Meikle Geddes

Absolutely love Meghan & Hunter. I think Meg's been my favorite of the three 21st century protagonists. As with the previous stories (True & Malcolm's and Erin & Rob's), I couldn't tear myself away. Everything fit perfectly together. I was a little perplexed at first with how long it had been, according to Meg, since she had seen Robley vs. the year she returned to and how much he had aged, but even that was eventually answered (though that concept's definitely mind bending). I'd love to read another story MacKintosh / MacConnel love story!

Story 3.75, Narration 4.

I did enjoy this story, but I would have liked Hunter to be less noble and more willing to accept he was important to his clan. For a man who is incredibly confident in his capabilities. He wasn't all that confident on how others felt about him. AS though he was unworthy.

Incredibly Hunter isn't sexists about Meghan having bested him in hand to hand. I can't see that happening really. It's a time when men were most valued for their fighting abilities than anything.

But then again, Hunter is influenced by two women from the prior novels who traveled from the future as well.

Nice addition to the series.

There are times when I want to just sit down and read a book for pure fun. One that will take me away from it all while renewing my belief in the power of love and how men can be blind regardless of the era. THE HIGHLANDER'S FOLLY succeeded on all counts.

It is a fun time-travel story with a bit of the paranormal tossed in with the fae. The pacing is smooth, the characters vivid and the dialogue witty. It's the perfect bit of fluff when you are looking for a bit of brain candy. And it has men with kilts!
