Kayla Winters is no stranger to struggling, but the past year was too much, even for her. With a chronic illness that seems to have taken a turn for the worse, a degree she’s all but failing andthe guilt that’s been plaguing her ever since her mother’s death, Kayla knows she needs to reclaim her life.
What she doesn’t need is to discover that the world she knows—the world every human knows—is only one half of an unimaginable whole. And as if being whisked to a place of myth and magic isn’t enough, there’s Declan, the handsome elven prince who can read her emotions. He crashes through her careful defences with the intensity of a shooting star. Even worse, the more time Kayla spends with this male, the more home is starting to mean something else.
Yet when the villain of her fairy tale turns out to be Declan’s own father—a king with mind-controlling powers, an obsession with gaining entrance into the human realm and the almost certainty that her blood is the key to his conquering dreams, Kayla realises one
Falling in love is easy; it’s the happily ever after that’s shrouded in shadows.

Absolutely spellbinding! ✨ This book had everything I love in a romantic fantasy—an unbreakable fated bond, a reimagined Camelot, Merlin’s legacy, an evil king threatening everything, and mind-bending portals between realms. The stakes are sky-high with impending doom hanging over humanity, yet the romance and magic kept me completely hooked.
The worldbuilding is lush and immersive, blending legend with fresh twists that made Camelot feel both familiar and entirely new. I was captivated by the way Diane Farrugia wove together starry destiny, shadowed secrets, and the kind of high-stakes love story that makes your heart race.
I devoured this book and cannot wait for the sequel—because with an ending like this, I need more, now.
If you love romantasy with danger, destiny, and deep magic, you must read this.
This book beautifully blends fantasy and romance in it. What I loved most about this romantasy was how it blended everything I crave in the genre: immersive world-building, a steady yet gripping pace, and characters who refuse to fade from memory. Kayla, in particular, felt so real from the very beginning. She carries the weight of grief, illness, and guilt, yet never loses that quiet thread of strength within her. Her pain is undeniable, but it’s her resilience that shines through, making her journey into the magical realm both moving and unforgettable. Her bond with 'Gumer' was adorable.
Declan… honestly, where do I even begin? I adored him. I loved how his character was so deeply thoughtful and selfless. His loyalty to both his kingdom and to Kayla was unwavering—he never hesitated to put their safety above his own. Reading everything he endured made my heart ache for him, and by the time I reached the final chapter, I was completely undone.
Kayla and Declan, their romance and relationship dynamics were "chef's kiss". I loved the chemistry between them and the slow burn between them? Oh! It was just perfect. I also loved the character Emeryn! Her devotion to her brother really stood out—she chose to stand by him and follow, fully aware of the dangers ahead. That kind of loyalty was so moving. I also adored the friendship she built with Kayla; their bond was tender, genuine, and filled with the kind of love that makes their connection unforgettable.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romantasy with high stakes, a strong emotional arc, characters you genuinely root for and a fantasy world that's easy to sink into. I can't wait to read book 2 now!
Thank you to @dianefarrugiaauthor for writing this beautiful story & to @beyondthebookspr for introducing me to this gorgeous book 💕
4⭐️ Very mild 🌶️ A beautifully written fantasy debut by Diane Farrugia. Sometimes I felt like I was in this world along side Kayla watching everything she was dealing with. Kayla was such a force to be reckoned with, so strong minded and capable even with her illness and being thrown into a completely new world. Declan was so passionate and caring, I loved that he never took advantage of his gifts, especially when it came to Kayla and making sure she was ready for a relationship with him instead of forcing the bond between them. I loved the plot, and the love story was captivating. The courage the friendships created made for some beautiful scenes. The plot twists had me going crazy and my heart broke for them so many times! I so hope there is a reunion in the second book too, I can’t imagine that all those sacrifices would be for nothing!
This beautiful story deserves all the stars!! ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The author, Diane, delicately weaves together fantasy and romance to create a perfect flow between the two. The world building is lush and vivid, and makes you want to jump right into the pages to experience it yourself. The magic system is unique, and if you love a little Merlin inspired lore, then this stories for you!
The author also gives the same amount of dedication to the development of every single one of her characters. Declan and Kayla are her main characters. They both struggle through so much adversity, guilt, as well as both physical and mental pain. However, when they find each other , they learn that they don’t have to struggle alone any longer. The author is brilliant at helping these characters find themselves, and discover their inner strength. In turn, helping them finally find forgiveness and learn to let go of pain that still lingers within them. It begins with yearning, then blooms into such a deep passion and connection between these two, that I was alternating between tears and blushes through out the entire book!
Diane does a wonderful job with her side characters as well. Like, Emryn for example. I grew to love her strength and compassion, as well as her development throughout the story, and cannot wait to hear more about her in Book 2 of this series!
If you are looking for a swoon worthy, all-encompassing, plot-twisting, heart breaking (and repairing!) book that screams the power hope has , then you should definitely read this novel! It also helps that the author is one of the most genuine, and caring people I have ever met! All of that spills onto the pages as well!
Thank you @dianefarrugiaauthor for the wonderful read! I can’t wait to continue on with the series! 💗
A few of the tropes :
💜 Chronic Illness Rep 💜Fated mates 💜Forbidden Love 💜Evil King 💜Slow-burn Tension 💜Human and Magic Worlds 💜Green Flag MMC
This book had everything I love in a romantasy: emotional depth, solid world-building, addictive pacing, and characters who leave a mark long after the last page. From the very first chapter, I felt like I knew Kayla — a character navigating grief, illness, and so much internal guilt, but still somehow holding on to this quiet kind of strength. Her pain never overshadowed her resilience, and that made her journey into the magical realm even more powerful to witness.
Now let’s talk about Declan. I don’t even know where to begin. The softness. The sacrifices. The way he holds space for Kayla even when everything around them is falling apart. I genuinely felt every moment of his struggle and loyalty. Their bond didn’t feel rushed or forced — it grew through small gestures, shared pain, and moments that were both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Their connection had weight, and I felt it.
And Emryn. Oh, Emryn. The kind of side character who isn’t just there for comic relief or plot convenience — she shines in her own right. Fierce, grounded, deeply protective — I adored every scene she was in. And the bond between the three of them? Easily one of my favorite parts of the story. Not to forget the adorable unicorn, Gumer, who I now want in my life forever.
The fantasy elements were done so well — not overwhelming, but rich enough to keep me invested. There’s a clear power hierarchy, magical lore, and a villain that genuinely made my blood boil. The pacing never dipped, and the twists (especially toward the end) had me flipping pages like a madwoman. Just when I thought I knew where things were going, the story took sharp, unexpected turns — and I loved that. The stakes kept building, and the emotional tension was so well handled.
I also need to shout out the writing — Diana Farrugia’s style is clean, engaging, and emotionally immersive. It’s the kind of writing that makes the story breathe. There’s no fluff or filler; every chapter matters. The way she balances emotion, action, world-building, and character dynamics is seriously impressive. Her dialogue felt natural, the emotional beats were well-earned, and the narrative just flows. Honestly, I couldn’t stop reading.
And okay, I didn’t know this was a series, so when that ending hit? I sat in silence for a good minute. There’s no closure yet, and I’m not okay — but I’m also obsessed. I need book two in my hands now.
If you’re someone who enjoys romantasy with high stakes, a strong emotional arc, characters you genuinely root for, and a fantasy world that’s easy to sink into — please read this. You’ll find magic, grief, healing, soft romance, loyal friendships, and a villain you’ll absolutely want to punch.
Thank you to the author for writing a story that’s going to stay with me for a long time. I’m so excited (and lowkey nervous) to see what’s next for these characters.
Thank you so much to the author and @booktasters_ on Instagram for sharing a copy of this book with me !!
“From the moment the golden-edged leaf fluttered inside his room on a magically scented breeze, Declan knew something was about to change”
“This girl was a human … his Lasai Cara. This would ruin everything”
Portal magic? Fated martes? Political intrigue? Count me intrigued !! Such an interesting story of rebellion and slavery, of powerful and powerless, of love and hate, of hope and despair. It caught my attention from the very first moment and following our FMC, as she finds herself into an elf world with no idea how she came to be or how to get out of, was soo amazing. A strangers to … maybe something more, with a Prince who simply wants what is best for his people. Even if it means freeing them from his own father. So innovative and beautiful. It is also really fast paced so you get into it without fear of getting bored by the story or by the characters which are quite entertaining for themselves!! And it might be a little spicy, y’all so the romance will be blossoming and you will enjoy it !! But not too much as to overshadow the plot and the magical complication of her being a human in the elves kingdom !!! There was one trope that I didn’t like necessarily but it’s a personal opinion because in the end, it felt almost necessary for the whole book to develop the way it was supposed to, so I can’t really complain. After reading this, I feel like we can expect great things from the other books in the series and I cannot wait to start book two !!
“When you decide to give yourself to me, Kayla of Humaynraalm, I don’t want there to be any doubt in your heart … And, in turn, I promise you this - when i’ll make you mine, fear will be the last thing on your mind”
This book was so good, I absolutely loved it. The chemistry between the characters, and the slow burn between them was just perfect.
This book beautifully blends fantasy and romance in it. I was literally so hooked starting from the first chapter.
Kayla, is such a strong and brave character . Even though she was going through a lot of struggles of her own, she never stopped helping others. She stood strong amongst everything and never gave up. I loved how courageous she was despite everything, also her bond with 'Gumer' was adorable.
Declan, god where do I even start, I absolutely love this man. I don't think I have ever read about a more thoughtful and selfless character like him ever in my life. He was literally ready to do everything in his power to protect the people of his Kingdom and Kayla without thinking twice. I honestly felt so bad for him, of everything he had to go through and the last chapter just completely broke me.
Also how can I forgot about Emeryn. She was such an amazing character. loved her. She was so supportive of her brother that she literally agreed to go with him even though she knew about the risks. Also I loved her friendship witj Kayla and the loving bond they shared.
Overall this was a great book. This book also reminded me of those mangas, where the FMC gets transported into a new world. The writing of the book is very simple and engaging. Also after the ending, I cannot wait for the next book.
Among stars and shadows is a riveting romantasy novel with high stakes perils and unbridled anticipation. The swoon-worthy romance will sweep you off your feet.
The story follows Kayla who has been in the blunt of the tragic events recently and her chronic illness has been also wrecking rampant havoc in her life. When she finds herself in a magical realm. Meeting Prince Declan, the handsome, charming elven crown prince she learns that being the only human in Lockhaven is not perilous but it has a whole lot of other consequences that could impact the human realm. Declan's father the High King is a tyrant and manipulator of all sorts.
Kayla and Declan, their romance and relationship dynamics was *chef's kiss.* I'm sure others will agree to this. The world building is intriguing and masterfully crafted which gives the readers a magically explored world with mythical creatures and exciting adventure that won't let you go. It's my kind of romantasy. I could go on and on about the storyline and characters.
If you are looking for a palette cleanser fantasy romance then this book is perfect for you.
Among Stars and Shadows is one of those books that gently takes your hand and then quietly steals your heart.
This romantasy blends fairy-tale magic, slow-burn romance, and deep emotion in such a beautiful way. Kayla, our FMC, lives with chronic illness (Lupus), and the representation is handled with so much care, honesty, and respect — it felt real, grounding, and incredibly meaningful.
The story is a loose Arthurian / Merlin-inspired retelling, woven with magic, court intrigue, and a slow-burn romance that truly earns every single moment. The connection between Kayla and Prince Declan develops naturally, tenderly, and with so much emotional depth — no rushing, no shortcuts, just feeling.
What stood out to me most was how effortlessly I fell into this world. From the very first pages, Diane’s writing pulled me in and never let go. The magic, the looming darkness of the king, the emotions, the longing — it all felt immersive and intentional.
This is a story meant to be read slowly. Savoured. Felt.
If you love fairy-tale retellings, slow burn romantasy, emotional depth, and rich world-building — bring snacks, tea, and tissues. You’ll need them.
I’m so grateful I found this book — and this author. ✨🫶🏼

Quotes ..💜
“Please tell me,” he crooned, his mouth millimetres from hers, “does this not feel real?” And then he kissed her. 🤭🤭🔥
“The truth is that I let down my people, went back on my word and ruined months of planning all because of this bond. But I do not regret it. And if we weren’t bonded, I would still break promises and ruin plans to keep you safe. That is why I was willing to give up my magic. That is the only reason I could even tolerate not being soul tethered to you. The truth is, as much as I love this kingdom, I would see it burn to keep you safe.” 💜💜🔥🔥
“You’re my Lasai Cara. I will not apologise for trying to keep you safe.” ♾️
Thank you to the author for the stunning PR box and advanced copy 💖
Among Stars and Shadows is a magical romantasy debut novel by Diane Farrugia. I was hooked from the very first page!
Kayla is a university student in London who is mourning the loss of her mom when she finds herself sucked through a portal to another realm of elves and magic. Stranded with no apparent way to return home, as well as suffering from a chronic illness with no means of obtaining her medication, Kayla is taken under the wing of a handsome elf prince.
Diane has created a captivating magical world with unique ties to our own through a twist on the legends of Merlin and Camelot. The world building is stunning, I felt as if I truly was in a fairytale full of magic and mystery. Along with Kayla, we learn how this mirror realm is connected to our own world and that not everything is as good as it seems. There are plenty of twists and turns (along with a beautiful love story) that kept me engrossed in this story. I could hardly put it down!
I think fans of Elise Kova’s Married to Magic series will really enjoy Diane’s work! This is not a marriage of convenience book, however, the story telling and overall romance was reminiscent of Kova’s work.
Read this if you like: ✨ Mirror Realms ✨ Magical Lore ✨ Chronic Illness Rep ✨ Beautiful Romance with Light Spice ✨ Fated Mates ✨ Court Politics ✨ Good vs. Evil ✨ Found Family ✨ Elves ✨ Unicorns!
This is book one of a series and I’m so excited to see where the story goes! I need to find out what happens next! 💖💖
From the start, this felt like a fairy tale, and I got some lovely once-upon-a-time kind of vibes from it. I think fairy tales are something that will always hold magic, and will always speak to us, but it may be that as adults, we connect with them in a different way.
The author created an entire world here for readers to lose themselves in, with elves, unicorns and sorcerers. I also connected with the romantic element of the story, and that connection deepened as I carried on reading.
This was quite a long read, so I had to read it over several days, rather than finishing in one sitting. If you are a fantasy romance reader, and you want a book that will help you escape for a while, you'll probably love this.
This fantasy romance was such an engaging read! It reminded me a lot of ACOTAR, with the main female character being a human in a fantasy realm. This was unique though since it had portals, unicorns, and nods to familiar fairytales. The FMC, Kayla, had real human struggles like chronic illness and grief made her relatable and reel. The story was a quick read and the world building was descriptive and rich.
The romance plays a big role in the story, but I felt like it was rushed a bit and I got lost in the timeline of events. Since this was fated mates, I understand why it was sort of an instant love, but I would’ve like to see more build up!
This book completely immersed me from the first page and didn’t let go. Kayla was unforgettable, her grief, guilt, and illness made her relatable, but her quiet strength and resilience shone through every chapter. Declan stole my heart with his unwavering loyalty, thoughtfulness, and devotion to her, making their slow burn romance feel real, tender, and intense. Emryn was a perfect addition, fiercely protective, loyal, and her bond with Kayla added so much warmth to the story. The world building was rich but never overwhelming. The pacing was addictive. Now I can’t wait for book two.
Devastating! This book had me turning the pages in a furious frenzy, devouring every word… and having my heart absolutely shattered. Kayla is a human battling a chronic illness, and after leaving the doctor with bad news about her lupus, she believes life will never get better. That is, until she is suddenly transported to a fantasy world. This story blends magic, realism, and a beautiful reimagining of Camelot. Merlin’s power, an evil king hungry for control—not just over his own realm, but over other worlds as well. We get fated mates, sisterhood, a burning love… and pure devastation. I know this is only book one, and thank The Ancients for that, because I finished with a lump in my throat and tears threatening to fall. I cannot wait to discover what awaits Declan and Kayla next.
Oh Wow!! This was the first fantasy novel I have ever read, and I loved it!! Can't wait to read the next book to see how the story continues. Super well done to the author, what a creative imagination you need to have to create this entire new world! Thanks to this book I will be reading more fantasy novels.
I enjoyed Among Stars and Shadows! This was perfect to cuddle up with as the weather is getting colder.
This debut romantasy is well written and an easy read. Kayla is a strong FMC who has been through some really hard events. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series!
This was a thriller of a book for sure. There were things that I thought was going to happen but turn the other way. It’s a great book with a little romance in it and some magic along the way
I really loved this one. The world Diane created is full of magic, mystery, and emotion. Kayla was such a strong main character, and even without any magic of her own, she was so brave and clever. I really admired that about her.
My only complaint is that I wish we got to see more from Declan’s point of view when he was falling for her—not just as his lasai cara, but, when he was getting to know her and starting to care for her as a person. I think that would’ve made their love story feel even deeper.
I also really loved the connection between Declan and Emryn. Their connection added so much to the story, and Emryn is just such a cool character. I hope we get to see more of them in the next book.
A great romantic fantasy with heart, courage, and a beautiful world. Looking forward to what comes next.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. it had everything a good romantsay needs. a slow burn romance, magical worlds, magic, secrets. I love the fact that the FMC Kayla is a human who is thrust into a magical world. that she starts off in the human world and ends up in a magical world. the MMC Declan is sweet, protective, firece when it comes to Kayla. I loved their chemistry. I Loved the world building and can't wait to see more of it in the next book. loved the reimagining of Camelot and Merlin and hope we get more!! that cliffhanger OMG 😲 looking forward to reading book 2!
Among the Stars and Shadows is a romantic fantasy novel that begins with Kayla, who is struggling with her illness while still grieving her mother’s loss and blaming herself for everything. Not long after, life takes an unexpected turn. When she visits the park where she lost her mother in an effort to face her fears, she suddenly finds herself in an entirely different realm, one filled with magic, elves, and other fantastical creatures she had only read about in fairy tales. What she didn’t expect was to be protected by a handsome elven prince, who also turns out to be her fated mate? Read the book to discover what more awaits her in this magical world.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK!! I adore books that make me feel deeply, whether it’s anger, tears, laughter, or butterflies. And this one made me feel everything. I’m not usually a pro at reading fantasy, so it often takes time for me to get into such books. But this one? I finished it in just three days. Yes, you heard that right, ME reading a fantasy book in just THREE days!!
The writing was incredibly easy to get hooked on. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. The plot? The characters? The storyline? The writing? The chemistry? Everything was just perfect!
I absolutely loved Declan and Kayla and their beautiful chemistry. They were both so willing to sacrifice for one another, especially Declan. My poor baby… my heart still aches when I think of that scene. And let’s not forget Emryn, the best friend, best sister, best everything. I just love, love, love her. Oh, and my cutie little Gumer (a unicorn) he’s the bestest of the best.
I didn’t even know this was part of a series, and now I cannot wait for book two and all the rest that will follow. Just give me all of them already, I need my babies back, and with a happy ending!
If you love romantic fantasy books with magic and magical creatures, and you’re looking for something beginner-friendly and completely addictive, this is it! Just go read the damn book, and thank me later.
Thank you to the author for writing this beautiful story and to beyondthebookpr for introducing me to such an amazing book and making me part of this tour.

‘Among Stars and Shadows’ by Diane Farrugia is a lovely novel, with a fairy tale romance and a ‘Once-Upon-A-Time’ charm.
Kayla has been struggling with the passing of her mother, when she is warped and transported into a magic realm. Upon entering this magical kingdom, she is first tested when sirens attempt to control her and almost have her drowned, when she is saved by the charming Prince Declan. Kayla is automatically drawn to the handsome prince and senses a connection, although she notices apprehension from his part.
Sparks ignite between the pair, once they commence their journey into the elven kingdom and fate unites them, with empathy, as their lives are mirrored, having lost their mothers, and their perceptiveness, towards each other. Declan shares the secrets of his gift with Kayla, the power to read emotions, and acknowledges her admiration of his resolution on not abusing his power, with her.
Kayla learns from the elves about Declan’s father, the treacherous and deceitful king, who has the power to control minds and has a hatred for humans. Kayla discovers the truth behind the story of Merlin and Camelot, and how the magic realm was separated from the human world, in order to protect all inhabitants. With aid from her new elven friends, Kayla must hide her human identity from the king, to save herself from his wrath, whilst battling with Lupus, without her medication.
In the midst of their courtship, hidden from the King, they witness the destruction to the homes of their elven friends. Their relationship is further put to the test when the King realises Kayla is human, and suppresses her to keep a secret from Declan, harming their relationship in order to keep him safe.
A series of events unfold where Kayla and Declan grow an even deeper connection, albeit the Kings plan to destroy them. The young couple face a series torment and hardships from the King, where they must rely on hope and make the ultimate sacrifice in order to survive.
With unexpected twists and turns, this is a story of friendship and love, which will keep you turning the pages of this sweet novel, to uncover hidden family secrets and an unknown magic.
If you enjoy long fantasy novels, with intriguing characters, about sirens, elves and unicorns, within a magical kingdom, this is the book for you.
My spoiler-free review of Among Stars and Shadows:
I'll begin by saying I'm not a diehard romantasy reader, and it's fairly difficult for books in that particular subgenre to keep and hold my attention. This one, unfortunately, suffered from the same struggle, though not so much for the genre as for a need for better pacing and editing.
It's a portal fantasy/isekai tale - if you're unfamiliar, it's when someone from "modern-day earth" ends up by some means or another (sometimes their own death, though not in this case) in a fantasy realm, often through a magical doorway or via some wild storm (think the cyclone in The Wizard of Oz, for instance). This premise in and of itself isn't a bad one, but the author rushes the transition, making it awkward to follow. And there's of course the trope of fated love - this time between the human Kayla and the elf prince, Declan - which also feels entirely too rushed, but then seems to try to force tension between them unnaturally. There are other things I felt were rushed, as well, but I'm endeavoring to keep this spoiler-free, so I'll leave those details out.
There's also the issue of certain types of characters (I'm careful of naming them here, not only for spoilers, but because I don't wish to bring problems down on a passionate, enthusiastic author's head) that are lifted straight from a very popular game from a very litigious parent company. Borrowing from Arthurian myth is safe enough, if sometimes a bit overdone; borrowing from an IP that has invented its own races and subtypes is far riskier, and I hope it doesn't come back to bite the author.
These criticisms aside, the author is clearly imaginative. It's not difficult to empathize with Kayla most of the time, and I admire her inclusion of disability (knowing very little about lupus, I won't judge the accuracy of the portrayal, but we should see more of this - yes, even in *fantasy*). Her writing isn't bad, it's just underdeveloped. The book could use a developmental editor, as well as a line and copy editor, to make some major improvements and avoid any potential copyright issues. While I had difficulty enjoying this book, I can see how a romantasy fan could value it - and with some work, I could probably come around, too.

This novel is a gem, featuring a richly imagined setting, an engaging love story, and a compelling cast of characters. I particularly enjoyed the epic romance and the unique twist related to Camelot. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves portal fantasy.

From the outset, this felt like a fairy tale, evoking lovely "once-upon-a-time" vibes. Fairy tales possess a timeless magic that resonates with us, and as adults, we may connect with them in different ways.
The author has crafted an entire world where readers can lose themselves, complete with elves, unicorns, and sorcerers. I also found myself deeply connecting with the romantic element of the story, and that connection grew as I continued reading.
This was quite a lengthy read, so I took about a month to finish it, rather than completing it in one sitting. If you're a fan of fantasy romance and are looking for a book that provides an escape for a while, you will likely love this one.

What do you think? Does this sound like a book you'd enjoy exploring?
Among Stars and Shadows by Diane Farrugia is an immersive and emotionally charged portal fantasy that blends high-stakes adventure with slow-burning romance and just the right touch of mythic mystery. It’s a story that explores resilience in the face of power, the messiness of desire, and the question of whether destiny can ever be outrun.
Kayla Winters is a relatable and grounded heroine, scarred by trauma and desperate to reclaim her sense of self. When she’s thrust into a realm where fairy tales breathe and magic pulses beneath every surface, she doesn’t rise with sword in hand—she survives, stumbles, and refuses to yield. Her internal journey is every bit as compelling as the external conflict, and Farrugia does a wonderful job of showing how strength can look like vulnerability, defiance, or just choosing to stay upright when the world spins sideways.
Then there’s Prince Declan—gorgeous, enigmatic, and maddeningly magnetic. What starts as an inconvenient attraction soon grows into something deeper, especially as the two are thrown together by circumstance and trapped in a court ruled by Declan’s manipulative, mind-controlling father. Their chemistry crackles, and while the romance takes its time simmering, the emotional payoff is worth the wait.
The magical realm is vividly drawn—a place where myths walk, kings play god, and ancestry might just rewrite fate. Farrugia blends traditional fantasy elements with a darker twist: the mind-binding magic, the threat of silence, and the looming solstice deadline add a constant sense of urgency. The villainous king is both chilling and cunning, and his obsession with Kayla’s human heritage adds an eerie layer to the unfolding mystery.
Kayla Winters is everything I want in a heroine: strong, scarred, and deeply human. Her emotional wounds feel real, raw, and recent and that grounding makes her plunge into a myth-infused magical realm all the more powerful. The world-building is rich with folklore, danger, and wonder, yet it never overshadows Kayla’s deeply personal journey.
Enter Prince Declan: gorgeous, enigmatic, and just complicated enough to make your heart ache. Their connection simmers, builds, and burns in all the right places, without ever falling into insta-love tropes. Instead, we get something far more compelling: a bond formed through shared danger, emotional tension, and unexpected vulnerability. It's a real romance, and it hurts so good.
The villain Utterly chilling. Declan’s father, the manipulative, mind-controlling king, is a looming threat on every page. His obsession with breaching the human realm gives the story global and magical stakes, while his cruelty toward Kayla adds a dark urgency that keeps the pages flying. The mind-binding element and magical ancestry plotlines are handled with care, creating tension that feels both emotional and plot-driven.
As the Winter Solstice looms, and Kayla’s choices narrow, the twists get sharper, the magic deeper, and the suspense tighter. You’re not just reading to see how it ends you’re reading because you feel everything Kayla does. The desperation. The defiance. The ache of wanting more than just survival.
If you're a fan of A Court of Thorns and Roses, From Blood and Ash, or An Enchantment of Ravens, this book belongs on your shelf.
