The journey begins one fateful night when Evie finds herself stranded amongst the tide—the sole survivor of a shipwreck that has left her with no memories. Rescued by fishermen, she is taken to Port Crun, a massive trade hub governed by the merciless and corrupt group known as The Circle. In the wake of war and caught in the tension brewing between the power-blessed fae and the magic-wielding coven, Evie struggles to piece together her past as she is forced into the wretched world of slavery and prostitution. When Evie bands together with fellow captives, will her determination and defiant nature free her from the shackles that bind her? Or, will Evie realize when she forms a relationship with the charming Admiral Jeser that her quest for freedom is far more complex than she had ever anticipated?
Embark on a journey into a realm of fae and magic that invites you to explore themes of inner strength, courage, fantastical creatures, sisterhood, and romance.
I don’t think I have ever read a Pirat fantasy before, but this book has fully convinced me of the possibilities this subgenre has!
We follow a young fae female (Evie), who is rescued at sea with her memory lost and who is quickly sold into a form of slavery on a boat. Without knowing who she is and where she comes from we see her making new friends and learning what it is worth fighting for.
The plot of this story was both heartbreaking (the human trafficking and forced prostitution especially so) and full of hope & magic, which is mainly due to some of our favorite characters going after what they want.
The world is both large and small (the second mainly because for the majority of the book we never leave one specific town). The author has found creative ways to tell us about the political ongoings & intrigue in the different countries, the different creatures that exist and the instudtice that is taking place.
We mainly see the world through the FMCs eyes (Evie) and due to that we don’t always know who to trust. It makes for some great plottwists and rambling moments that make certain situations feel much more daunting.
The FMC has several possible love interests, but as of the end of book 1 we don’t yet know who to root for. Also something that makes me excited for book 2 😊
The book ends both with a solid conclusion to one major problem in Evie‘s life and a need to continue in the series to find out how everything continues.
To sum it up: this is the best (and admittedly first) Pirat fantasy I have ever read. And I am here for it!! 🏴☠️
But please be aware: if you are sensitive to the topic of human trafficking and forced prostitution you should probably not read this book. It is one of the major evils Evie is confronted with in book 1
I finished this book in a few days because whenever I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it. This book features fae, nymphs, selkies, fauns and so many more fantastical creatures. If you’re into high fantasy you will thoroughly enjoy this book.
The cast of characters in this novel are so unforgettable and you begin to really care for so many, especially the first protagonist we’re introduced to- Evie. There are swapping POV’s, which I sometimes find confusing, but Gallagher switches the POV of characters seamlessly. We see the perspectives of Evie, Hali and Willa.
The twists and turns of this book keep you on the edge of your seat. My favourite part of this novel and what I found most endearing was the sisterhood between Evie, Hali and Willa. Their friendship develops throughout the course of the book and they become an inseparable trio. I know we have heard of slow burn romances, but the slow burn of this friendship was amazing to see.
I found myself really getting attached to Evie. I wanted her to win so badly. When she ached, I ached. Gallagher really pulls at your heartstrings. I was completely enamoured with the characters and drawn into this world she created.
I can’t wait to pick up the next book once it is released! The author set up so many plot points that I can’t wait to see explored in the following novel of the Beyond Forgotten Tides series.
When I opened this book I didn't know what to expect. With a few exceptions, fantasy isn't my absolute favourite genre, but this story is definitely an exception.
I love the premise of a protagonist who initially knows almost nothing about herself. Evie a fae female having been rescued from the sea without her memory, like a newborn fawn takes her first unsteady steps into the story and then proceeds to decide what type of person she is.
There is plenty of action, cruelty, greed and danger, but also humour, kindness and of course, magic with a strong cast of engaging supporting characters. Meanwhile the narrative is expertly driven forward as the main characters grow and develop.
Hats off to Rynne Gallagher! This book is epic and I very much look forward to the next installment.
When I started this book, I was a little worried it was going to be “too fantasy” for me based on the prologue. I’m glad I hung on, because this tale was everything I’d hoped for! Evie is rescued after being shipwrecked at sea. She has no memories of who she is, but luckily Hudson, one of her rescuers, is kind and looks after her. In a city full of turmoil, Evie’s lost memories are the least of her worries. The character development in this story is top notch; I found myself invested in all of the main ladies (Evie, Willa, and Hali)! There’s a lot of fantasy, some slow burn romance, and a good dabbling of suspense woven into this story. I received this as an ARC, and I’m running to request book two!
I received this book as an arc. OMG I want more there are so many questions as to what happens next, I wasn't sure what to expect as this is the first proper Fantasy book I have red but I am 100% hooked, I loved everything about it the plot the relationship and getting to know the characters. I just can't wait to know more.
