Merlin's Siege

Rate this book
Merlin, the legendary sorcerer, is transplanted from the misty isles of ancient Britain to the sun-drenched chaos of central Florida where his magic clashes with doubtful senior citizens and his most powerful spells go unused whilst he undertakes only mundane tasks.

Once the phantom sage behind kings and conquerors, he lived through centuries of enchanting triumphs, but here, shuffled from his place in history to a sedentary existence of rheumatic pain, quest cravings have transmuted into a mindset of self-doubt and despair. Unable to conjure an age reversing spell, he coaxes his deteriorating body through each day yearning for death to make its claim. Yet, instead of finding an end, he finds someone whose pain is greater than his, a woman who requires help more than she is willing to admit.

Blessed with new purpose, Merlin once again embraces life and joins with others in a quest, as he endearingly asserts, to help a damsel in distress. But his quest stumbles when carefully thought-out plans go awry. And more complications pile up when an old acquaintance appears on the scene, an acquaintance who was once his lover and wants to be for a second time. To bring about an auspicious outcome, his magical prowess will be essential—he will need all the spells and incantations he once employed daily with nary a second thought. Will he remember?

In a small Missouri town, Hal Anderson and Marty Marshall met and became friends. Having followed different life paths, one as a retail chain CEO and the other as a computer services company CEO, their perspectives varied, but they shared one common goal: to write. Together, they publish under the pseudonym H. M. Marson.

Their first offering, The Stingy Minion: Hacked, now in its second edition, brings suspense and mystery to a small town as coming of age young adults hack into an intriguing website and want to know more.

Their second offering, Merlin’s Siege, finds the aging sorcerer languishing in central Florida where he has hit bottom, where his life no longer matters. Then two women find him, one is kind and caring, the other jealous and vindictive—and therein lies the rub.

The magical past is transported into the present. Merlin the sorcerer from King Arthur’s medieval times with his magical powers helps the seniors of Chestnut Hill Coffee Exchange in Central Florida.

Mother and son are united as the two are protected by the new Knights of the Round Table of the Coffee Exchange. Trying to stay hidden and safe from the villains is harder than it seems to be for the most vulnerable people in this magical versus evil story. There is plenty of drama and suspense between the characters.

This book is definitely a must read, if you enjoy magical fantasy novels.

The premise was fun and the story was engaging enough to finish the book. I was undecided whether the stilted dialogue and undeveloped characters were an intentional shtick, or if the authors are just genuinely unaware of how human interactions work. I’m leaning toward the latter given how many stereotypes, micro-aggressions, and generally outdated thought patterns are scattered throughout the book.
