HARDSCRABBLE WAY is a coming of age story about what happens when a family who had it all loses everything. Resilient teenage Delia Williams and her mother find themselves struggling to survive in a tent city on the outskirts of Philadelphia. When it seems things can't get worse, a social worker threatens to send Delia to foster care and hospitalize her mother. Inside the tent city, Delia and Emily overcome obstacles as they discover what truly matters. In the tradition of characters you met in The Secret Life of Bees, The Elegance of the Hedgehog, and White Oleander, Delia is a character who will warm your heart and stay with you. HARDSCRABBLE WAY was inspired by actual events.
Told from the point of view of a teenage girl, this book brings home the reality of people living way beyond their means--and how quickly things can all fall apart when one small thing goes wrong. Delia is a cheerleader who wants for nothing; she has all the clothes and boots and electronics she could ever desire, but her family life is a mess and the extreme debt her parents have incurred eventually land her and her mother in a tent city in Philadelphia.
This was an amazing story. It makes you really feel for Delia and the rest of the characters in this book. It really touches you because this could happen to anyone at anytime. I highly recommend this book!
Amazing story with thought provoking characters. This book really makes you think and how we are all steps away from living in poverty. Highly recommended!
