More Than Fine: A Sweet Romantic Comedy: A brother’s best friend, enemies to friends to lovers clean romantic comedy

Rate this book
“I could never love you.”

Those words play on repeat in my mind as I run away from my year-long stint volunteering with Nurses Around the World and head straight home to Henderson, NV. I still don’t understand how my boyfriend, er, I guess he’s my ex-boyfriend now, could be so heartless.

My only conclusion is that he’s secretly a player, and he played me for the past year while we “dated” and served tribal communities in the Amazon rainforest together. I thought what we had was real. I thought he was the one. I’m heartbroken, to say the least.

As I step off the plane and get hit with the arid heat of Las Vegas in June, I force a smile and tell myself I’ll never fall into that trap again.

But thirty minutes later I’m standing on the back porch of my childhood home staring down the biggest player in the entire world as he shamelessly tries to flirt with me. Jonathan Chancey. I’ve heard enough stories about this guy to know that he’s trouble. And by trouble, I mean he’s a drop-dead gorgeous FBI agent who oozes charm and charisma and was gifted with all the right genes to make women swoon.

And he knows it. Because he flirts with any woman with a pulse. Hence why he’s flirting with me.

Despite my determination to keep my distance, I can't help but find myself drawn to him. The more I’m with him, the less I think about my ex, and the more I realize that he isn’t the guy he pretends to be. He might actually be a good person underneath that annoying persona. Which only makes this harder because I can’t fall for another player. I don’t think my heart can handle it.

"More Than Fine" is a dual POV sweet romantic comedy with plenty of laughs, some swoon-worthy moments, and no explicit scenes or language.

Hey! I'm Stephanie. I love writing funny, sweet, and aww-worthy romance books. I'm a firm believer that there's nothing a little love or laughter can't fix.
When I'm not writing, I'm mom-ing hard core or sleeping. While mom-ing, I like to make sourdough, spend time outside, and teach my kids how to be independent, happy little humans--a huge work in progress but we're getting there.

This book is about Penny and John, who have a brother and friend in common. John works with Penny's brother, and they are best friends. Penny is trying to find her purpose and passion. She just returned home from an adventurous volunteer assignment where she had a relationship go bad. She is dead set against another relationship and can be easily annoyed. But through her sister, this relationship between John and Penny is fostered, and we get to experience the growth of the relationship throughout the book, to the culmination, where they realize that they have fallen in love with each other... which is the best part! Awhh! Written in a coloquil style, the conflicts can be a little uncomfortable and Penny takes a little too long to let go of her stubborness and fear. But overall, this is a relaxing, fun read with adventure, prejudice, loyalty, friendship, playful flirting, and grace all wrapped up in a budding romance.

This summary pulled me in instantly. I could really feel the heartbreak and confusion from that brutal opening line, and the sudden shift from pain to unexpected chemistry with Jonathan made it even more engaging. I love the mix of humor, vulnerability, and slow unexpected attraction. It sounds like a fun, sweet romance with just enough emotional depth to keep me hooked. I’d definitely want to read more.

This is the first book I’ve read by Stephanie Stoker!

More Than Fine is the start of the Tactical dating series by Stoker, FBI rom-coms following the four Holbrook siblings. This first book centres on Penny, a nurse returning from volunteering for the past year with Nurses Around the World, after learning her ex-boyfriend couldn’t lover her, just dated her, because she was the only one around. Defeated and deflated Penny returns to her childhood home and town only to immediately meet Jonathan Chancey, the biggest player in the entire world, who shamelessly starts flirting with her even though surrounded by her family.

While the subtitle alludes to this being a tactical dating book, it’s not until 3/4 of the way through the plot finally centres on a moment of this nature. Ultimately the whole predicament felt unnecessary for this story, but could be the segue for book two’s plot. I loved the missional representation of Penny’s volunteer position, but felt she held Jonathan’s player past against him, for far too long in the book. The positive counselling storyline with Jonathan, was authentic and realistic, especially because I think there is a lot of stigma around men admitting they need help and actively participating in the process.

Readers will love More Than Fire fir its perfect balance of sweet, witty and emotional growth as they speed read every page!
