First book in a new series from one of my favourite authors
Great start to a new series. Has me wondering when the next book is coming out and where it will take us. Loved Sam the main character and her bond with her dog and horse (and her son). And yes the bond developed quickly as did the trust between them but sometimes that is how life works especially with our heart dog/horse. It was also good seeing the understanding and trust between dog and horse and having that is a wonderful experience especially when you are working. Also loved that she is older but still living her life to the fullest and stepping up for her community. It was also nice seeing characters from the Jessica Anderson series make an appearance. Also got a nice surprise this week with the 4th book in the King and Midnight series dropping onto my tablet early so off to read another book from Dawn.

This is a bit of a departure for Keur; I loved it! Sam Cassidy is a widow and member of her local mounted search and rescue. The first person she found (though she wasn't searching for anyone, just out for a ride on her new horse accompanied by a dog who had newly adopted Sam) had a pretty serious mobility impairment, but with his terrific sort-of wheelchair, which was upside down in the mud when she found him, he wasn't letting his physical limitations get in his way. She's 68, had lost her former horse, had to deal with politicians trying to take over the SAR and kick her out because she's old (threatening legal action if she went out on rescues!). Sam, however, after dealing with the emotional implications of this, chose not to go down quietly, especially when the "new" version of search & rescue failed to find the people they were allegedly looking for & called off the search for two teens after only a few days. Sam is one tough woman! Fortunately, she has a son who is a top-notch lawyer, who stepped up to the plate when he decided she needed some legal help and others in the SAR community who also chose to fight back.
In addition to the characters, family, and the stories of searches and rescues (yes, plural) what I really enjoyed was Keur deftly taking on ageism, ableism, the politics of development as these connect to corruption among elected officials, and more. You want to read this!

DL Keur books are always a good read. Come Calling is no different. Sam, Mr. Nosy, Trucker and Colt are all great characters and I can not wait to hear, read, more about them. Where did Mr. Nosy come from, who trained him and how was he dumped for Sam to find him.
I think Colt is like Landon Reid and I would love to see a cross over story with Sam, Colt and Jessica and Landon.
This is another great book and I hioe it become a whole series.

What a amazing story!
This was one of my favorite books so far this year! I am a once was cowgirl and horse lover, my age and disability has left me behind a walker, but this book took me back!
I never owned a rescue trained dog, but my mixed breed dog helped us find three different kids when they were lost, and once he found a dead man. He would do the same thing Mr. Noisy did too
Great storyline and a wonderful story! I really hope this will turn into a series!

A fantastic story
This was a bit different from the authors usual books, but it was still a fantastic story that I enjoyed. Although the title, as well as the story itself, was unusual, I believe that everyone could learn a lot from this story, especially the younger generations regarding the treatment of the older ones. JMO!
I would certainly like to see more stories in this series in the near future.

I have read Ms. Keur's other books on the SAR dogs in Idaho, and I look forward to additional releases.
In this book, the SAR theme continues, but with a main character not featured in the Jessica Anderson series. Sam is closer to my age than Jesse's, so I can relate a bit more to the physical challenges of the searches. Sam is very lucky to have Trucker and Mr. Nosy for her faithful sidekicks. Well, her son Colt is a big help too. Recognizing that sometimes a lawyer can come in handy when fighting the establishment is a reality and a great move on Ms. Keur's part to recognize the "order" needed to keep the "laws."
I enjoyed the book as I did the others in the SAR genre. Sam's closeness to Trucker (her horse) made me wisful missing my horses and the joy they brought me.
The searches provide nail-biting action along with the descriptions of Sam's closeness to her animal buddies. I'm jealous.
If you like the Search and Rescue books and anything to do with animals, you'll like this book. If you prefer sex scenes and romance, this isn't the book for you. For those of us who like the stories without the excessive heavy breathing and no animals dying, you're the right audience. I look forward to the continuing adventures of Sam, Mr. Nosy, and trucker. Oh, yeah, Colton too.

Great
Was such a good story. Shows the real stuff that goes on with higher ups who have power and their own ideas of what they think we want or what they want and how it feels to be on the opposite side of trying to keep things as they are or as people want them who don't have power or money to fight. Change is always hard especially the older you get and it can be good but people need to remember that with age comes wisdom. Also being in your late 60's is not old, retirement age is 67 now. People live alot longer and stay healthy and in shape. My brothers 69 and hikes on trails and does all kinds of physical things and he's not a health (go to work out places) person. But he sees the most beautiful sights, waterfalls, trees and birds. It's just fun. Relaxing and stress reducing for him. We all need less stress these days. The feeling of feeling useless due to what others think is old is so not true. It wasn't in this book but if you read others you'll notice that people in their 60's or 70's are not eccentric if their loud, play with their grand children and we DO NOT kackle when we laugh. GREAT story D. L. .

Sam's son Colton gets her a new horse to replace the one who died. While out riding she finds a large dog part great dane takes him home he doesn't have a chip, so Sam keeps him. On a daily walk she finds a man in a tipped over wheel chair with tracks on it. Men in a truck forced him over Sam with Trucker's help gets him and his chair upright so he can drive it again. Sam gets a letter she's been fired from the new local SARs team and is told to turn in equipment. Sam calls Nelson to find where to send the GINSAR equipment. He tells her to keep it because she's still part of that group and thanks her for letting him know what is happening. Two brothers go missing after72 hours (3 days) the local SARs calls them runways calling off the search. Sam decides to look for the boys herself. Sam and her son Colton are both fighting the local law enforcement for different reasons. Good beginning, like the characters.

I had a bad feeling when I read the first few sentences in the book. It just felt that something bad had happened to an animal. I had to put it down when my feeing was right. But -- I love D. L. Keur's books so picked it up a couple of hours later. It is sad for a bit, but then "good" things started happening. Good is a relative term, as is usual in D. L. Keur's books there is skullduggery in the government of the town and something has to be done about it.
Search and Rescue plays big part in the story so a couple of characters from D. L.Keur's Jessica Anderson have a nice part to play in the story.
The characters are great, the evil people are true to form, and the plot contains all kinds of difficulties that must be overcome. The setting is northern Idaho, so mountain trails, wild rivers, and beautiful scenery make the read enjoyable.
Highly recommend and looking forward to the next in the series.

Hokey and Contrived
Having read this author for years, it is difficult to write this review. Unlike her delightful and well written Anderson series, this book is a forced, folksy contrivance. The characters are stereotypes. The animals are used either to evoke emotional responses or to present some offbeat food use. The main character Sam is presented in turns as a dotty senior widow who is sad and depressed or meeting challenges that an entire town half her age can't achieve. Two of her three children are disappointments while the third who lives with her does everything but walk on water. Although characters from the Anderson series have cameo appearances, this book is a folksy, lackluster shadow.

I love that the main character isn’t a senior sleuth in a retirement home or club that dashes around with a group of friends solving mysteries, but a down to earth woman still holding her own in a tough life and doing important work with Search and Rescue. When she finds something out of the ordinary, she reports it and goes more than the extra mile when it comes to lives being in danger. She doesn’t have to go around digging up clues and getting herself into scrapes. Her two wonderful “sidekicks”, Mr Nosy and Trucker add a lot of interest to the story for me.
The horseback SAR was fascinating and informative. The book shows that sometimes the old ways and older people aren’t as obsolete and useless as we think they are. Looking forward to the next book!

Love it! Can't wait for more!
Sam is a 68 year old widow. She owns a farm with cows, chickens, a couple of horses and an adult son who's an attorney. Sam pulls no punches. She's smart, a good listener, and speaks her mind. Sam is also a member of the search and rescue team in her area. When strangers come in to take over the town and surrounding area slowly Sam doesn't sit back and let it happen. When the older peop!e are fired fro. SAR that doesn't stop Sam. They quit after 3 days . So Sam just went for rides to see what she could find. You'd be amazed. Great job. Thank you.

Loved this book! It took me a bit to get the story going in my head, but then I could not put it down. I, too, look for something to do that is worthwhile and helpful. Sam was right ti be sad at the dismissal the SAR program gave her, but her need to use her knowledge of the mountains to press on and keep trail riding/ looking on her own. So glad Colton loves is mom and they support each other. I also loved the tie in of Captain Remmer, Sheriff Reid and Jessica Anderson from DL Keur’s other SAR book series. I am a fan of all. I would love to read more about Boman County or other Counties in the GINSAR group.

The dog is not unfriendly or afraid but is untrusting at their first meeting. Finally Sam convinces him to follow her home. All three of them quickly become friends and a good relationship develops. There’s some searching and rescuing and some political exploitation by the county officials. A great story.

No sex, no surprise babies, no shifters, no dragons, no spaceships…just a really good, down-to-earth story about an older woman and her dog, horse, son and community.
A good look at how the world is treating their elderly and a better look at how some of us (yes, I’m in the “elderly” age group) feel about that.
And, at the end, maybe not a fully happy ending, but an ending that makes you feel good for the characters.

I am a huge fan of D. L. Keur, especially her Jessica Anderson K-9 Mystery Series.
This is kind of an adjacent new series with new search and rescue, w new characters and mention of some from the Jessica series. The search teams are polar opposites and still effective. The setting is in a nearby county in Northern Idaho.
I found this read to be of the same caliper and enjoyed it immensely. I can’t wait for another Sam & Mr. Nosy K-9 Cozy Mystery. The animal characters are wonderful and fill the pages.
Highly recommended.

Come Calling and read this book
Come, calling really touched my heart and my interest because I am the same age as Sam. Come Calling let you revisit Jessica Anderson Sheriff Reid two of my favorite characters from her Jessica Anderson adventures. The characters in this story were engaging and you’re rooting for Sam from the beginning. You cannot go wrong with reading this book. It will warm your heart.

Older Heroine Keeps Going
This was quite a nice read in Ms. Kleur’s unmistakable style. We are introduced to Samantha Cassidy, a recent widow whose good common sense and grit help her find her way and maintain her sense of purpose. I appreciate that she is in her late sixties. Horses, a good dog and a loyal son and the spectacular scenery are all part of the story. Can’t wait for the next book!

Great read
Another great story by Keur. Well written and a story line that draws you in. Loved the characters and their relationship with their animals and people around them. Most of all I love the message it sends about the older generation of our community and they should be valued, respected and not discounted. They all have a wealth of knowledge and skills learned throughout their long lives we can all learn from if we only took the time.

Lost and Found
I enjoyed the main characters human and animal in this novel. Samantha and her son Colton have lost their purpose in life. Just going through the motions. An aging SAR longtime member Samantha is removed by no fault of her own. Colton struggles with realities of being a lawyer. Comes along a new horse, lost dog and determination and they are on their way to a greater purpose.

Fight the good fight and help where you can.
There is an old saying that youth is wasted on the young. Wisdom can still be learned and past down to the young if they only listen. I love the perspective of Sam, an older women and her son Colton. Then you throw in a good sniffing dog and a brave horse. Great story . Don't forget greedy people and having to fight for what is right and just.

Sam Cassidy’s husband has recently died, so she is left with the work of running a ranch in northern Idaho. She does get some help from her son Colt. However, he is a lawyer and quite busy. Sam used to be a member of the local search and rescue team but has not been on call since her trusty horse died. It is not until she is given a new horse and finds an abandoned dog that she can fully reconnect with life. The author vividly portrays the bond between human, equine, and canine.

Real great read !
Just bcoz Samantha was older,she was determined and caring. Having lost her husband, SAR was a big part of her life. Not for accolades, but because she cared. Mounting an unofficial search, she spent days looking for 2 teens reported lost. Mounted on her trusted Trucker, with Mr Nosy scouting ahead, Sam was successful where others had given up. Great story!
Just bcoz Samantha was older,she was determined and caring. Having lost her husband, SAR was a big part of her life. Not for accolades, but because she cared. Mounting an unofficial search, she spent days looking for 2 teens reported lost. Mounted on her trusted Trucker, with Mr Nosy scouting ahead, Sam was successful where others had given up. Great story!

Great Read!
Love Sam and Colton! Their struggles are real and I love their authentic thoughts and actions and reactions. I agree with Sam on so many levels. Its difficult to stand for your beliefs sometimes. Love Mr Nosy and Trucker; never had a horse, but miss my dog (even though he wasn't as smart as Mr Nosy). Worth staying up late to finish 🤗

Best of both
First the plot is good and the characters real. And second, OMG, there were correct words used when needed, like neither-nor. I had given up on seeing really good American English being used instead of wimpy-excuses-short cuts because the author does not know any better. (signed “Ye Olde Copy Editor”)

You're never to old to help save your neighbors.
This was a really great story about K-9 and Rescue no matter your age. This was just also a good insight into the way Sam and her son work together. That was fun to read. Now if only all court cases worked out so well this world might be better. At least their lives are.

Good read in one evening
I enjoyed this new book from D. L. Keur. Sam is a good hearted woman facing many losses. Instead of giving up, she finds new meaning in old loves. I know nothing about SAR, horses, or HRD dogs, but don't need to. The pace of the story was fine and I really liked the summary of events at the end.

Good reading
I knew this was going to be a good series, when I started crying by the first page. Oh it would be so wonderful to have a dog like Mr Nosy, and that horse Tucker, both so smart and great companions. I like how it is tied in with the a
Anderson k-9series. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Great storyline!
I really enjoyed reading this story written with an older adult, Sam's point of view. I appreciate that it had no sex and no bad language. I liked that sheriff Reid from the author's other series was brought into the storyline. I would love to see even more of the other series brought into the next book.
