Mated to the King #3

Love Bites Harder: Mated to the King, Book 3

Rate this book
I've been dragged into the fae realm and given no choice but to pick a mate if I ever want to get back home.

Thankfully, the fae king has offered up some of his most trusted men in an attempt to find me someone to marry.

Unthankfully, he's sort of… possessive.

Which means I'm sleeping in his room.

In his bed.

With him.

While I'm trying to choose a mate from among a handful of candidates who barely seem interested in me.

There's enough chemistry between us to light a fire, but he's not an option. I despise him, and he needs to focus on putting an end to the eclipses that keep making his people beastly and insane.

We have to keep our hands to ourselves and deal with our own problems, to protect his kingdom.

But when the next eclipse sets in, everything goes to crap. Because wild, out of control fae kings?

Apparently, they bite.

*This is a spicy enemies-to-lovers romance with a happily ever after

Really liked this woman. She is short and kinda fragile but not weak! She brings Kai to his knees and has him wrapped around her fingers.

This man - omg. Every woman can be happy to have a partner like him. Adored him!

This series is just so funny and I can‘t take it serious but still love the idea and storyline. The plot in this one is kinda mysterious and we got a lot of crazy fae. Overall it was silly but I had a good time.
The author is so creative and gave every character their own personality traits. I love the world building and the fact that not everything is cliché. Lola Glass created her own type of mates and gave each species a little special trait.
Clementine and Kai have great tension. Their banter was funny and I enjoyed to follow their relationship path. The vines were unexpected but so hot (in the smut scenes) and gave the whole book a little kick. Kai is my new fav male in this series. He is precious and caring while the crown weights heavy on his shoulders. Clementine is his perfect match.
This whole series is no literary masterpiece but I like these books regardless. I giggle a lot and have a fun time, so worth the 5 stars for me.
All in all this was an entertaining and quick fantasy romcom and exactly what I was in the mood for.

Character Backgrounds and Plot Summary

Love Bites Harder follows Clementine, the third siren sister to face the chaos that comes with her species and their dangerously attractive magic. Sirens in this world have very little control over who becomes obsessed with them, which has repeatedly put Clementine and her sisters in terrible situations. Before the events of this book, Clementine had already endured trauma from Curtis, the former werewolf king. His bite initiated a mating bond she never wanted, forcing her and her sisters into hiding among the vampires while Curtis hunted and controlled others through fear.

After Curtis is killed by the new werewolf king, Clementine thinks she finally has an opportunity to live for herself instead of merely surviving. Unlike her sisters, who were dragged into dangerous situations almost immediately, Clem wants something simple. She wants freedom, fun, and a chance to breathe. Her decision to visit the werewolves for a carefree night seems harmless enough, but that freedom disappears almost instantly when she unknowingly crosses paths with the fae.

Clementine ends up pulled into the Fae Realm, where the rules are brutal in their own polished and magical way. She learns that she cannot return to Earth unless she mates with a fae. Kai, the Fae King, becomes her guide and protector, though his behavior immediately raises questions. The Fae Realm itself is dealing with dangerous eclipses that cause the fae to lose control of themselves, creating tension underneath nearly every interaction.

Kai initially seems to take a practical approach by introducing Clementine to possible mates rather than claiming her himself. He insists on waiting until an eclipse before allowing her to choose because he wants to see how each candidate behaves under the influence of the magical events. While his concern appears reasonable, the story slowly reveals that Kai’s restraint has more emotional complexity behind it.

The turning point comes during the selection itself. Clementine believes she is finally getting agency over her future, only for Kai to step in and declare that she belongs with him and will not be choosing anyone else. The moment changes the entire dynamic of the book because the careful distance Kai maintained suddenly disappears.

Highlights and Limitations

One of the strongest parts of the novel is Clementine herself. Compared to some paranormal romance heroines who repeatedly run toward danger without thinking, Clem’s reactions often feel grounded in her past experiences. She has spent much of her life feeling trapped or controlled by powerful men, so her craving for independence feels earned rather than inserted simply to create conflict.

There is a good example of this early on when Clementine enters the werewolf territory expecting freedom and excitement. Readers know immediately that things will go wrong because this series thrives on chaos, but her decision still makes sense. After years of hiding, wanting one carefree night feels realistic.

Kai also ends up being more interesting than he initially appears. His introduction makes him seem detached and overly controlled, almost like he is managing a diplomatic situation rather than a person. However, his actions throughout the book slowly reveal cracks in that image. His insistence on waiting through the eclipses before allowing Clementine to choose a mate creates an interesting tension because readers can question his motives. Is he protecting her, controlling her, or trying to convince himself not to claim her?

The eclipses themselves add a nice layer to the story because they are not just background decoration. They create real uncertainty around the fae and force Kai into difficult positions. Instead of relying entirely on external villains, the story builds tension around whether characters can trust themselves.

The main limitation comes from the speed of some emotional developments. Kai’s possessive declaration that Clementine is his creates a dramatic and memorable scene, but some readers may feel the transition moves quickly. Kai spends a significant portion of the story holding himself back, and then suddenly shifts into full claim mode. The emotional groundwork exists, but there are moments where the progression could have benefited from more time.

Some side characters and potential mates also feel more like devices for creating tension than fully developed individuals. Since Kai introduces Clementine to multiple possibilities, readers may expect stronger emotional investment in those interactions. Instead, some exist primarily to highlight Kai’s jealousy and growing feelings.

Narration

Raven Wildewood and Lucas Dixon do a strong job bringing Clementine and Kai to life. Raven Wildewood captures Clementine’s personality especially well because she balances the character’s humor, frustration, and vulnerability without making her sound immature. Clementine spends much of the story trying to reclaim control over her life, and Wildewood gives weight to moments where that desire clashes with fear and uncertainty.

Lucas Dixon’s performance fits Kai’s personality effectively. Kai spends much of the story carefully controlling his emotions, so Dixon’s calmer delivery works for the character. When Kai finally drops some of that restraint, the shift becomes noticeable without feeling exaggerated.

The dual narration helps the romance because listeners are able to understand both characters’ motivations. Kai in particular benefits from this because some of his actions could easily come across as frustrating or overly controlling if readers only experienced Clementine’s perspective.

Final Opinion

Love Bites Harder continues the strengths of the Mated to the King series by mixing paranormal romance, magical chaos, and family connections with plenty of humor and tension. Clementine’s story works particularly well because her desire for freedom grows naturally out of everything she has survived.

The strongest moments involve the push and pull between Clementine wanting control over her future and Kai trying to protect her while battling his own feelings. The scene where Kai finally interrupts her choice and claims her changes the emotional energy of the entire book and gives the story one of its most memorable moments.

While some relationship beats move a little quickly and a few supporting characters could have used more development, the audiobook delivers an entertaining continuation of the series. The narrators strengthen the emotional moments, and Clementine’s journey from someone escaping one unwanted bond into someone choosing a real connection gives the story satisfying emotional weight.

2.5 but ill round up because I like the overall fantasy world Glass has created. for me, this was probably the weakest romance of the 3 so far - it was mainly sex with a sudden profession of love from the mmc near the end. until that point, I didn’t really feel their connection was particularly deep, although admittedly there were one or two sweeter moments. the mmc was pretty emotionally reserved, which I usually like in a character, but here it nearly tiptoed into being bland. the fmc meanwhile made a lot of stupid decisions at the start and I didn’t find her super consistent. that said, by the end of the book I was finally convinced they actually liked each other, but it came a bit too late.

the whole eclipse/finding the magical anchor sideplot that ran alongside the romance also could have been more developed. the mmc was just basically reading his Dad’s journals to find the answer, and then its the fmc who reads the last journal and figures out what the anchor is. so, not exactly Sherlock Holmes level of deduction… okay, maybe I’m being petty, but given how this was a MAJOR problem for the fae realm, you would think the mmc could have just recruited a few of his inner circle to help out with reading a few journals and sorted this problem way sooner?? I wanted the resolution to be more complex/involve more skill than simply being literate. why was it so easy after all that prior fuss? it just meant the climax at the end fell way flat for me.

all that said, this was still engaging and I enjoyed being back in the universe Glass has created. If you liked books 1 and 2, then you’ll probably also like this one as its got the same fluffy, low stakes vibe and sassy sisterhood of sirens.

Ok story, the inconsistencies abound- carried forward from the first book. I assume Vamps are not nocturnal and don't burn in the sun, but they still sleep in coffins? And they are warm and not freezing.

Its interesting what the author chose for her Vampires in this series where she keeps to the werewolves and fae pretty close (the vines thing is cool).

I don't like Clem very much, stomping around, naïve, immature and looking for story book love while sleeping around. Ok she likes sex. But it seemed a bit much, yucky actually. Considering the fae king went DECADES without sex. Just kinda off putting.

The mystery was a helpful plot point, yes the instant Clem mentions the "xxx" you KNOW it is important so its kind of a give away. There were humorous moments.

I will keep with the next 2 books- invested in Bane and Talon now, they seem really interesting...

Highlights & Spoilers:
Fear swelled in my chest. “Is it going to kill you?”
“I’m not five feet tall, so no.”
---------------
I grabbed a piece of meat off the tray, and her eyes narrowed in on it. “I thought you were a vegetarian.”
“I lied.”
--------------
He pulled away after a few minutes. We were both struggling for breath, our foreheads pressed together again as he held me firmly to his chest. “Shit,” he mumbled.
“Shit?” My voice raised.
“Shit,” he agreed.
There was an edge to the words that I couldn’t identify. “You can’t say that after mating with me,” I shot back, pulling my forehead away from his. “Obviously, that’s going to stress me out.”

And surprising insight I NEVER thought of:
I stepped up closer to him and swatted his arm as I teased, “What happened to Prince Charming?”
“Even Prince Charming wants to screw Cinderella. He wouldn’t go to all the hassle of hunting her down just to give her a shoe.”

Out of the three books I read, this one has a more likable FMC. 😄

Clementine is sunshine personified, kind, and a hopeless romantic. But she can be stubborn too when she wants—I think that's the common factor in all the women in this series.😶

I ended up liking her the most because of her personality and she's more understanding compared to her other sisters. She didn't come off as bratty, immature, or too stubborn. She knows when to back down and to speak up. Basically, all I'm saying is she didn't piss me off. 😂

When it comes to Kai, he's the MMC who did a helluva pushing away, which made him my least favorite (by far). Then when he finally got his act together, he just dropped the ILY bomb out of nowhere, and it really shook me up. I couldn't wrap my head around how he ended up falling for her. But apparently he did, so I suppose there's not much I can do about it now. 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, there's also another thing that made me like this, but it's obviously a double standard. 🫣😂

Between these two, it seems like Clem is the more experienced, and I think it's been years for Kai since he got some action. So when they went to the vampire manor where Clem used to live, they ran into two guys with whom she had hooked up with. 😅 I know, I know, I'm a hypocrite because if the roles were reversed, I'd be pissed. 🫠

But it's rare to have this situation around the FMC because usually it's the MMC and his past hookups who are being flaunted all the time. So when this happened, I couldn't help but laugh because Kai was freaking jealous and nearly unalive the other one. 🤣

Moving past that, I think this book was pretty okay overall. It wasn't as annoying as the previous ones because the FMC here was actually likable and had a sweet personality. And when the MMC embraced his feelings, they were honestly cute together. Also, this book feels a lot lighter than the last two. There’s no villain, and the characters are just trying to fix things to get everything back to how it was before.

This was still fun enough to read, but a disappointing third book in the series. The short spoiler-free review is that it's a bit of a rinse and repeat of certain relationship dynamics, has some questionable plotting and worldbuilding, and sets up the fourth book in a way that makes me REALLY unexcited.

Clementine is horny and has slept with everyone around her and is still lonely. So, in the middle of the night, she sneaks away (even though she's the one who had been in danger originally to kick off this series so she should know better) and gets kidnapped into the fae realm.

She's told that she's basically poison to all the fae and no one wants her. Oh, nice! Love that for her👎🏻. The fae king decides to set her up with one of his buddies and at the same time can't help but give her orgasms which she accepts (see horny, above).

Eventually, the fae king declares she is his and starts their mate bond. She's upset for a little and won't have sex (or maybe she will, I'm confused) because she knows better than to let some dude get away with being mean to her.

The fae king is a jerk until the very end where he declares his love and she realizes she's loved him all along too so isn't that nice. Oh, and in the meantime, she solves a mystery that has taken him decades.

Then, they all go to a party where one of her unmated sisters decides to go ride a monster 🍆 but gets stopped because, little did she realize, monsters don't do one night stands. They're in it to win it... and she's not cool with that. She just wanted some no strings sexy times.

We learn that the world building has it that monsters imprint on the first person they're attracted to and that's it for them... and if she wants to get away from this one night stand, she has to get someone to KILL HIM!!!??

Uh, what!? Poor guy is infatuated with her and she's like "nah, let me find someone else cause I don't really like you like that". And THAT's the story we're going to get in book 4!?

Reasons why this book didn't work.
1. Replay of domineering man locking his "female" up and she reciprocates by setting boundaries and telling him how that's not cool. He realizes, "oh, that's not cool. I should treat you like a partner" and they live happily ever after. It was a fun story line in books 1 and 2, but didn't work for book 3.

2. This woman solves a mystery in one week that the king couldn't solve in DECADES. He's been reading through his dad's journals looking for a clue but somehow misses it. She finds it after a few days of reading! Let's not even address the idea that the "clue" was written in plain english and was super obvious. Let's just mention that the king has had the journal with the clue FOREVER and didn't find it!

3. The worldbuilding where the fae realm is 7X as fast, everything's bigger, there are weird things happening... but going back and forth between that and the human world is no biggie.

Enh... this book was still fun enough, but not great.

Mehhh.

I'll be the first to admit I wasn't thrilled about this one going in. Kai was the least interesting king, and Clem wasn't my favorite siren. The story set up was mildly interesting but that's really all. I read this story to get to Bane and Talon's.

So I'm not exactly surprised that I wasn't crazy about this book in general.

But there are things in here that do not help this story's case at all.

Clem and Kai's nicknames for each other (Five and Seven) are because of their heights. Because apparently she's 5 feet tall ... and he's 7 feet tall.

First of all, gross. Just the logistics of that make me wanna cry. I'm praying for that man's back and knees. 🙏🙏

Add to this the fact that every time someone asks we have to hear Clem explain it...eugh.

Second - how utterly unoriginal. There were a million more names one could have chosen. Instead we get numbers. NUMBERS! At this point, "Kitten" would have been preferable.

The names of most of the Fae are ludicrous.
Steve. Josh. Austin. Jordan. Paul. Rocky.
Is this the Fae realm or a frat house?
Actually don't answer that - there's cum on every available surface, apparently. It literally IS a frat house. 😒

Clem read very young in the previous 2 books. I don't know if it was entirely intentional, or because she was the one who got the ladies in to trouble in the first place (entirely against her will), but she came off as the wild kid sister that nobody could control who courted trouble every chance she got.

And this book, at least, is consistent in her characterization.

The trouble with that is that she read like she was just a teenager. And I really don't enjoy reading smutty books when teens are involved.

It also doesn't help that, by the end, she's still not really given any responsibility as Kai's queen the way her sisters were made partners to their mates in the previous 2 books. She's treated to dance clubs and masquerade balls instead.

And the glitter - let's not forget the glitter. This shit's getting old as hell. It was funny in book 1, mildly interesting in book 2, considering it was potentially a threat against the FMC's life.

But now I'm just over it.

The setup for Zora's book didn't thrill me. It sounded much too close to what happened in this book for me to be excited and knowing she's going to end up with Bane - it feels like I'm just going to be reading the same book twice. I hope that's not the case. (I swear, all of this just to get to Talon's story, when his is the one I've wanted since book 1.)

This story isn't terrible. But the characters don't really have any substance. Their romance is shallow and entirely sex-based - which is really doubly disappointing because Clem is the hopeless romantic of the siren pod and was actively searching for a love-match.

The plot isn't really carrying its weight either. So far this is easily the most generic and forgettable of the entire series.

Romantasy / Sobrenatural (sirenas, faes, vampiros…) / Parejas predestinadas

2.5 stars. Absolutely my least favorite of the series so for. Wasn’t a fan of the FMC, Clem. She was all ‘what would please me’ action without any thought of consequences. The first two books were about what her sister had to do to keep her safe and this book starts with her sneaking out of her safe house because she was bored.

Fore me, the fact that at the end of this book one of her sisters decided to ‘channel her inner Clem’ (dumb & thinking with her crotch) doesn’t bode well for the next book in the series.

i cannot tell you how much i LOVE clementine, she’s so chaotic and unfiltered, she had me cackling like an old witch. her and kai were the perfect match. that man was suffering before my girl clem came barrelling into his life / realm. 😂 and phew kai and vines were HOT. i was sweating. 😅 *new kink unlocked*

i truly love how clem always stood her ground and never let kai being her mate, get away with treating her badly. but when kai did upset clem i wanted to jump into the book and shake him. 😂 i think i relate to clem on a level because as much as i hate to admit it, i’m a bit of hopeless romantic. 🙄 *gags* i’m just glad she finally got her love story and her mate that she was longing for.

i know it’s not funny but the ending of the book had me giggling, these sisters are always getting themselves into situations. chaos just follows them everywhere. 😂

My least fav so far. The “nOBoDy WaNtS mE” sads that hit midway.. and from a bubbly, outgoing and popular siren for that matter… that annoyed me.
⭐️ The PRO’s are the world building, the vines (obviously 👀 ) and how she made changes to herself that SHE wanted by the end to better reflect her personality.. love love that, get it girl.
❌ The biggest con? It just wasn’t believable for the riddle that has plagued the king for literal centuries to be solved by Clem in a matter of weeks. THAT pissed me well off. It would have been so easy to have the anchor so deep underwater that only a siren could get it.

Mated to the King #3 – Love Bites Harder by Lola Glass

I’ve really dived into Lola Glass’ paranormal romance world lately, and I genuinely love being back in the universe she’s created. There’s something very easy and comforting about returning to these characters and this setting.

That said, this instalment was just okay for me overall. Clementine was very likeable, she had a warmth and steadiness that made her easy to root for, and Kai felt like a perfect fit for her. I enjoyed their dynamic and how naturally they complemented each other.

This book feels noticeably lighter than the previous two. Instead of a major external threat driving the plot, the story centres more on the characters working through their issues and putting the pieces of their lives back together. While that made for a lower-stakes, softer story, it also meant the tension felt a little muted at times.

One of my favourite parts, though, was the great cast of secondary characters. I always love when side characters add depth and personality to the world, and this one definitely delivered on that front.

Overall, a solid addition to the series, lighter, sweeter, and character-focused. I’m still happily invested in this world and looking forward to more. 🖤🐺

This one is spicy, and Kai is an adorable grump of a king, it’s really unfortunate that Clementine spends so much time being annoying. This is a case of “they need to sit down have a conversation” but there no actual miscommunication trope. I enjoyed their bond and I liked the glimpse into the Fae realm and how it differs from vampires and werewolves.

These two. Ugh. The stubbornness. The frustration. The teasing! The VINES!! loved reading their story. Loved the jokes and how everyone in the fae realm knew Kai was not going to let her go to another suitor.

These books are such an easy and fun read I’m honestly loving this series so far. They have great banter, SPICEEEEE and are just seriously hilarious.
