About the author

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer is regarded as one of the prominent literary figures ever existed in india. He was a legend in Kerala.

He was one of those outspoken figures who revolutionized Malayalam Literature, and Thus the World Literature itself with his dauntless sarcasm, satire, and black humor.

Often referred to as the Beypore Sultan (the king of Beypore) by the colleagues, he was one of the prominent figures behind the artistical, economical, and social reformation of the Kerala Culture.

His novel Shabdangal (The Voices) was once banned due to its echo that cyclonized a once feudalistic society.

He is also regarded as the translators nightmare. This is mainly because of the colloquial touch he added to his writings, which ethnically speaking would lose its humor and meaning when translated to other languages.

He was the sufi among the writers and and the greatest exponent of Gandhian Thought.

He was awarded with Padma Sri in 1982 for his overall contributions to nation as a freedom fighter, writer, and as a political activist.

ബഷീറിൻറെ ആത്മകഥാംശമുള്ള മറ്റൊരു നോവലാണ് 'മരണത്തിന്റെ നിഴലിൽ'. നോവലിൽ ഉടനീളം എഴുത്തുകാരൻ ഒരു തമാശക്കഥ എഴുതാൻ ശ്രമിയ്ക്കുന്നു. ആ കഥ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെയും നമ്മളോരുരുത്തരുടേയും ജീവിതം തന്നെയാണ്. യുദ്ധവും ദാരിദ്ര്യവും രോഗവും കലാകാരനെ അലട്ടുന്നു. ഏറ്റവും പ്രതികൂലമായ സാമൂഹികസാഹചര്യത്തിൽ മനുഷ്യർ അനുഭവിയ്ക്കുന്ന യാധനകളുടെ തീവ്രതയെ നോവൽ പറഞ്ഞുവയ്ക്കാൻ ശ്രമിയ്ക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഏത് സമയത്തും ലോകത്തിൽ മറ്റൊരിടത്തു യുദ്ധം നടക്കുന്നു. യുദ്ധം സാധാരണ ജനത്തെ സാമ്പത്തികപരമായും രാഷ്ട്രീയ പരമായും സാമൂഹികപരമായും ബാധിയ്ക്കും. അതിന്റെ നേർക്കാഴ്ചയാണ് നോവൽ. ബഷീറിന്റെ അണ്ടർ റേറ്റഡ് ആയ ഒരു നോവൽ ആണെങ്കിലും എനിയ്ക്കു നോവൽ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടതായി മാറി.

ബഷീറിന്റെ ആത്മകഥാംശമുള്ള നോവലാണിത്. യുദ്ധവും ദാരിദ്ര്യവും അദ്ദേഹത്തെ വല്ലാതെ അലട്ടുമ്പോഴും അവയെല്ലാം ഒരു തമാശരൂപേണ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. പട്ടിണിയെ അദ്ദേഹം നർമ്മത്തിൽ ചാലിച്ചാണ് എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നതെങ്കിലും വായനക്കാരുടെ മർമ്മത്തിൽ കൊള്ളുന്നുണ്ട്. പാല് കൊണ്ടുവന്നിരുന്ന കുഞ്ഞമ്മ പാലിന്റെ കാശ് ചോദിക്കുമ്പോൾ നിന്നെ ഞാൻ കെട്ടിക്കോളാം എന്ന് പറയുന്നതും അവർ തമ്മിലുള്ള സ്നേഹത്തിൽ കുതിർന്ന സംഭാഷണങ്ങളും വായനക്കാരിൽ നറുചിരി സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നു.

My first attempt at the legendary writer's books. Just loved his writing style - flamboyant yet simple. Beautifully constructed. It felt like he narrated the whole thing to me himself.

Very nicely written.

A story of a writer who has undergoing fasts during various phases of his life, and this 5th one seems to be his last.

Although he calls it a fast, actually he is fasting because he has no money to buy food or take care of anything else in his life.

He regular visitors in his rented house are a film-maker, a dancer & his little friend, Kunjamma'.

The filmmaker and his wife visit him regarding a discussion for writing a story for a movie with all masala elements. But at no point do they ever care if he is in need of money and the writer also is shy of asking the same across.

Although the plot was confusing to me, still I enjoyed the typical Basheer style of writing, especially his humour, his thoughts on the struggles as a writer. His thoughts on the Film industry and how it is stereotyped, not allowing a writer his complete freedom.

Although not very engaging at times, when he is in a reverie, thinking about food, drink, making money etc. but still managed to complete it as it was a short & sweet novel.

I recommend to all Basheer fans or anybody looking for a great & short malayalam novel.

ബഷീർ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ആത്മകഥയോടൊപ്പം, യുദ്ധവും, യാചനയും, ദാരിദ്ര്യവും നർമത്തിൽ ചാലിച്ച വളരെ മികച്ചതായി എഴുതീട്ടുണ്ട്. ദാരിദ്ര്യവും പട്ടിണിയും അദ്ദേഹത്തെ അലട്ടുന്നുണ്ട് അതോടൊപ്പം സാധാരണ മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിനൊപ്പം കൂട്ടി ചേർത്ത് വളരെ മനോഹരമായാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നത്.
