A Presumptuous Hope

Rate this book
Who declared that every young lady of a certain age must surely wish for a husband? And why must a handsome bachelor, in possession of a fortune, be the obvious candidate simply because he lives next door?

In the quiet countryside of Lincolnshire, Christine Grey is perfectly content with her life of spinsterhood, finding solace in the companionship of her beloved animals. In the tranquil routine of her days, she spends her time with married friends and puts up with her brother, who would try the patience of a saint. Satisfied in her habits and independence, she asks for nothing more.

Sir Alexander Thorne arrives in Horncastle, a newly minted knight and owner of the long-dormant Gracefield Park. His aspirations to prove his worthiness lead him to pursue the life of a country gentleman, and through it, a clash with his pretty neighbor. His arrival stirs well-meaning friends to plans of matchmaking, and skepticism in Christine’s heart.

When circumstances force them into a compromising situation, they have no choice but to face the necessity to wed. Even as they fight against their fate, the connection between them deepens until they find it difficult to ignore. Christine wonders if her hopes for a happy marriage are too presumptuous, particularly when he had been forced to offer for her in the first place. Alexander must grapple with his own insecurities as he strives to be the husband a woman as worthy as Christine deserves.

This is the third book in the series but it can definitely be read as a standalone. Christine and Alex don’t start off on the right foot. And Christine embarrasses herself multiple times following their initial meeting. Which makes for some great comedic moments. But later when they are caught in a compromising situation the solution, according to the ton, is to marry. But that may not come about so easy.
I really enjoyed this story! Christine is such a great character, I love how she loves animals and felt bad for her when she embarrassed herself. She also is such a sweet person. I also loved Alex, he is just the most considerate man. I loved how sweetly and respectfully he treated Christine. It was also nice to see characters from the previous books. Overall this was a great read and I definitely recommend!

I have somewhat finished reading this book. It's okayish storytelling; however, I neither like any of the characters nor sympathise with their life situations even if with happy endings.

Delightful to read.

Beautiful in writing and wit. This new and last novel in the Daughters of the Gentry series has been like a balm to my nerves. Soothing, elegant, fun.

The characters feel charmingly real. On the one hand, Christine is a true lady, very responsible for her duties, maybe a tad unconventionally. On the other hand, handsome Alexander wants to earn his place in good society through merits of his own, though that tends to steer him too much in the traditional way. The encounters between these two souls manage to be controversial and unfortunate. That, of course, means more lively entertainment for us, readers. Yay.

I relished the social visits between neighbours, the chit chat around tea and cake, the continuous misunderstandings while the main characters disclosed their thoughts in alternating perspectives that I both loved. Another cute thing was the grudging yet irresistible attraction that was brewing beneath the surface of mismatch and inconvenience.

Oh, the excitement! They reached a point of no return that really turned the village upside down.
I felt very excited to read the part when the couple falls into a conundrum which they find very hard to solve. It's the kind that puts their character and feelings to the test.

I was afraid that they wouldn't have enough romantic interactions due to the circumstances. However, they ended up sharing an intimacy born of admiration and commitment and a keen attraction that really sealed the deal. I loved that their relationship truly flourished at the right time and I was drawn to it every step of the way. It was perfectly romantic and heartwarming, including the adorable epilogue.

""𝑾𝒉𝒐 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒐 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒖𝒔?"

This was a slow start for me, but I ended up really enjoying the whole love story and the characters. 🩷 It was full of friendships and forgiveness, which I really loved.
Christine and Alex's story wasn't full of love at first, given the forced proximity trope, but I loved how they very fast became good friends and cared for each other, and guided each other through the struggles they walked through, defended each other, stood strong as one. 🩷
This is book 3 in Daughters of the Gentry series, but could easily be read as standalone! If you love clean, romantic regency books, then I highly recommend this one. 💕

The book title reveals its value well!

While reading, one can’t help but hope: hope for the main characters to see the value in each other, hope for the hearts to open and walls around them to crumble, hope to see forgiveness and joy when things are hard, to name a few. I also thoroughly enjoyed the simple story of love without over-exaggerated drama, and that is just the beauty of this third installment in the series.
Though you can read it as a stand-alone novel, do yourself a favor and go read the first book in the series to get familiar with the characters mentioned and enjoy Alex and Christine’s story to the fullest.
Besides, written in true Goutet’s fashion, the novel language brings you back to Regency period and delights you with its quirks. And it’s one of the draws for me to seek out a Jennie Goutet’s book.

And though I’ve been given a free copy, I was not required to leave a positive review. However, how can I do anything else when this series is just such a delight to read. All opinions are my own.

“If you must suffer a downfall in the eyes of the gossips through no fault of your own, then I will go down with you.”

~When the new viscount moves into the neighborhood, dear Christine is rather not impressed. Their first few encounters are nothing short of embarrassing and she finds him so extremely rude, and boring, and also attractive. Yet, when unforeseen circumstances rise, noble Alex comes to her rescue, Christine will have to re-examine everything she thought she knew about the man…

“Never had she felt such a familiarity with a gentleman she did not know. With it came an illogical sensation
that she had known him all her life.”

This is such a delightful story where both endearing main characters have made plans for their futures and those plans do not involve one another. Yet, unplanned circumstances and fate continue to gently or rather abruptly bring them together; sometimes in rather less than ideal circumstances. Yet, there is such a gradual change develop with both Alex and Christine’s emotions and opinions as their connection deepens, with the opportunity to fall in love as they deal with unforeseen circumstances that have the potential to greatly change their futures for better or worse. I love how this heartwarming story is precisely filled with such attention to all the details, charming characters, dear relationships, forced proximity, lovely humor, great banter and tension, plot twists, and even a perfect happily-there-after! This story is a wonderful ending to a dear series. All of which, are well-worth the time to read and enjoy!🙌🏻📚🩷

This was such a fun book to read! The mutual dislike to lovers (and the mutual dislike is REAL), the arranged marriage because of a compromising situation, the chemistry between Christine and Alex was so good! A great sweet romance - now I need to go read the rest in this series!

I am a great admirer of Ms. Goutet’s stories but have to say this one could not keep my interest so finally gave up. Maybe it was the narrator but am not sure. It was so slow paced, I had trouble keeping track of who was who, etc and the characters didn’t seem very nice, at least as far as I got in the book.

Please read this author’s stories, she has some gems. (:

A clean story. The final instalment in this trilogy set in Lincolnshire. As with the previous two books, and indeed most of Jennie’s books, I really enjoyed and loved it. This book is an enemies to lovers type scenario, and the characters are very good. From Christine and Alex’s first meeting they really do not like each other, and their next few meetings do nothing to alter that situation. The other main characters predominately feature in the previous two books, and I found the interaction between the various characters in response to the unfolding tale very believable, which in turn makes for a very good read.
As ever Jennie has tried to ensure that where possible she is true to the facts of the period and the geography of the area. Whilst I suspect most of the readers may not be familiar with Lincolnshire as the places actually exist and the story fits around that, I do think in a bizarre way it makes the story read/flow better. It is also pleasant not have any nobility appearing in a book, so often in this genre there is a plethora of dukes, earls and the like, neither is it set in London or Bath. So I thoroughly recommend this book.
Disclaimer in interests of transparency: You may have noticed in her ‘A Few Words on the Series..’ that Jennie kindly thanked me for my assistance. This assistance has been in providing information about Lincolnshire, the Horncastle area, and the like in her quest for reality and accuracy. The actual story lines, concept and the writing of the series are Jennie’s, so whilst I am honoured to have helped in providing information, I feel that I am able to offer a genuine review of the story, but I did not want there to be any misunderstandings.

I loved this book! A Presumptous Hope was such a delight to read. I loved the witty dialogue, enemies to lovers vibe, & sweet romance. From their nearly disastrous first meeting, to Christine’s embarrassing mistakes, to their mutual distaste yet attraction for each other, this book was impossible to put down. I couldn’t wait to see how the two main characters would ever get together.

Christine Grey’s a beautiful spinster who’s resigned herself to being her brother’s hostess. Though she’d love to have a family of her own, she enjoys caring for animals, baking, decorating, and helping her brother run his estate. She’s willing to work hard right alongside the servants & this gets her in trouble when the neighbor who nearly ran over her dogs happens to call & mistakes her for a servant. It goes downhill from there. Every encounter unfortunately gives the wrong impression of the shy Christine. Though there’s a mutual unwanted attraction, it isn’t until they’re forced in each other’s company that they really get to see the other in a different light.

Sir Alexander Thorne’s a newly titled gentleman who’s built his fortune through his engineering abilities. He’s just purchased an estate in Horncastle in need of repair, and hoping to run for parliament. He’s looking for a wife who will elevate his status in the ton. He also has high expectations from his older brother who wants him to introduce his daughters to Society. Christine Grey is definitely not the woman for him. However, despite their disastrous encounters, he finds her unnervingly attractive & when they’re faced with a forced marriage, he begins to think he could get used to the idea.

I loved Christine & Alex! I could definitely identify with Christine who seems to have a knack for finding herself in awkward situations. She’s such a caring person who has a tender heart for animals. I enjoyed seeing Alex see that side of her despite her embarrassing moments. Alex is a charming if a bit gruff gentleman who thinks he wants one thing only to realize who he really wants is Christine. I loved how their romance played out.

Their forced proximity was my favorite part especially when it involves being trapped together. I loved the underlying tension between them. Though Alex is ever the gentleman, the fact that they were forced to spend the night together in a small cabin is enough to get the ton’s tongues wagging & demanding a marriage. I enjoyed seeing them navigate their situation especially when neither one was especially thrilled to get married.

Highly recommend this delightful Regency! Though it’s part of a series it can be read as a standalone, however it was so fun seeing characters from previous books. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.

A Presumptuous Hope is a companion book in a series. I think it's probably 3rd in the series (Daughters of the Gentry), but Goodreads didn't list it as part of a series, so it was hard for me to determine it's exact location within the series. I am only using the relationship statuses from side characters that have their own books which take place prior to this book as a guide to determine the order. But I didn't know any of that before starting A Presumptuous Hope.

Christine lives with her brother. She handles his household business as if she is the mistress of the house. Yet she also enjoys getting her hands dirty with things like cleaning, gardening, etc. She also has a love for animals--specifically dogs. When she and her dogs are almost run over by a man gallopping through the woods, she's immediately put off by someone who would endanger her beloved dogs.

Alex is new to the area and has recently taken up residence in the neighboring estate to Christine and her brother. Alex and Christine have a handful of awkward and perhaps off-putting experiences. I found this to be a fun twist on enemies-to-lovers. They aren't enemies exactly, but there's definitely a level of dislike or at the very least awkwardness between them.

Alex and Christine find themselves in an abandoned hut one night when on the way to a country ball or event of some kind (I can't remember the details). They arrive seperately, but Christine nearly drowned in the process of escaping the rising floodwaters. Alex cannot abandon her. Unfortunately, they are compromised simply from being alone together. Circumstances push Alex to propose, yet Christine doesn't want to force anyone to marry her. I appreciated her stance, especially given their initial interactions. Yet I also liked the view of how even the friends and family of the two parties involved suffered the mistreatment of others as a result of her decision to refuse Alex's proposal.

I listened to A Presumptuous Hope on audio, so I don't have any quotes to share with you. This was a quick and fun story--exactly the type of book that I enjoy breaking up some heavier or longer books with a change in genre and tone. A Presumptuous Hope gets 3.5 Stars. Have you read (or listened to) A Presumptuous Hope? What did you think? Let me know!

Returning to a Regency romance is always like returning to an old friend. There are some tropes that get to be kind of unique to that time period and I just adored Jennie's portrayal of one of my favorites: compromise/forced marriage.

Alex and Christine don't have the best first impressions... or second, third, or fourth! This is also really an enemies-to-lovers story with an undercurrent of delicious denied attraction. When an incident creates a compromise, a marriage proposal is extended...and declined. Things didn't go well for women unprotected by marriage in the Regency era, so poor Christine's reputation is in tatters among people who have known her her whole life.
With a second proposal issued, Alex and Christine will have to make the most of it or deal with misery and resentment.

I love the Lincolnshire friendship crew in this story, and some of the friends and family that float in and out while ODC tries to figure out the mess they are in. They create wonderful dynamics and dialogue with plenty of good and bad tension. This was a solid ending to this series, and I love that the author gave us an epilogue to really appreciate the full circle moments.

I received a complimentary copy of the author's wonderful story to read and review. All thoughts contained here are my own.

A Presumptuous Hope by Jennie Goutet is the third in the Daughters of Gentry Book series, but still a standalone novel. Christine Grey loves animals and living in the countryside of Lincolnshire. She is happy with her life in her brother’s house and enjoys each day. Alexander Thorne has moved next door to the Grey’s and has high aspirations for his life. He has just been knighted and wants to continue in parliament. Christine and Alexander keep running into each other and both wonder if perhaps they could be more than neighbors.

This was a beautiful and gentle Regency novel. I enjoyed the setting in the countryside, meeting up with old friends from earlier in the series, and the dual POV. I love characters with layers that keep surprising me. At the beginning of the story I was not sure about either character, but by the end truly adored both of them. The Regency charm of the era is so beautifully written by the author. I felt like I was attending some of the events. This is my favorite of the series, and I was sad when it ended.

A Presumption Hope by Jennie Goutet is a delightful Regency story with a wonderful setting, sweet romance, and great characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and highly recommend.

Jennie’s regencies are so reliable. I love when my favorite in a series is the last one, all feels right in the world when such is the case (I rated the other two books highly as well). There was something extra cozy and sweet about this. One of the first thoughts I had when I finished it was, wow that felt like a cozy small town autumn romance but in the regency era, with that friend group, autumnal scenery, and gentry visits into town. I wish I encountered more regencies that made me feel this cozy.

Alexander and Christine were strong and well-developed characters. Alexander was an introspective king and a total gentleman and Christine was a reserved jill-of-all-trades. I want to be her when I grow up. She had so many admirable qualities. I really liked how the marriage of necessity was done. The conflict had an exciting back and forth to it that made the romance feel realistic and deliciously awkward honestly.

I was gifted a copy to read and review this but my thoughts are my own.

In this book: not-so-meet-cute, animosity to more, marriage of necessity, forced proximity, small town, rumor mill, autumn, friend group
content guide: clean for romance, language, and violence

Another addition to a wonderful series!

This book follows Christine Grey, an animal lover and someone okay with the spinster life. Her encounters with the main lead, Alexander Thorne, a knight and owner of the Ahsbourne estate, were almost comical in the way that she would somehow embarrass herself. I both shut my eyes out of secondhand embarrassment while also continuing to read what happens next.

And due to a compromising look for both of them, everyone expects them to get married. Now this trope is usually one I don’t always love in books but Goutet did a great job of writing it. They did manage to create some chaos in their small countryside village of Loncolnshire but it was more funny and intriguing than annoying. And the misunderstanding between the main two characters were funny and enjoyable!

Overall I really enjoyed this book and it was so nice to see characters from the previous book series! If you enjoy historical romance novels with hints of misunderstandings and forced marriage trope then you will love this book!

*Thank you so much to the author, Jennie Goutet for giving me a copy of this book. Though all thoughts are my own!

What a fun and satisfying story! I loved the pacing, the characters, the circumstances and of course the ending! Everything about this book was a delight.

Alex and Christine don’t have the best first, second, and even third impressions of each other 😂 but when an emergency situation brings them together, they finally get a glimpse of the other’s true personality. A friendship starts but immediately they’re thrown into scandal and an arranged marriage must take place. Is there any hope of a love story amid the gossip and unusual circumstances?

I really like the journey of Alex and Christine’s relationship. And while I do think they’d have gotten there in the end, being forced together brought out the feelings they had tried to tamp down. I loved the moment Alex realizes that he doesn’t have to fake a love match because he has found the ideal wife for himself. I really enjoyed this story and I loved the epilogue!

I love that the title embodies the spirit of this book: hope in each other, in the goodness of those around them, in forgiveness, and most important, for love and happiness. In spite of Christine and Alex disliking each other at first, and then being put into a precarious situation which eventually results in a forced betrothal, I was delighted to see how two people learned to appreciate each other by looking for and valuing the best in each other. When that turned into a lasting love, it made my heart joyful. I appreciated the epilogue that showed all the characters from previous books in the series and how they maintained their friendships and likely will for the remainder of their days. A lovely ending to the series which I’m sad to leave behind, but it left me with a contented sigh. I received a complimentary ARC of this book but was not required to give a positive review. The opinions are completely my own.

What a sweet conclusion to this series! I really liked the heroine and the hero. Christine was kind and seemed resigned to living her live as a spinster. Alex had promised his family to choose a wife from London society. Of course, it didn't work out that way for either of them. Despite the very rocky beginning they had, they were well suited for one another. Christine grew through this novel, and the end hints that she continues to grow after it ends. I loved how forgiving she was, even when the apology may not have been made for the right reason. And I loved how Alex's relationship with his brother improved.

While this could technically be read as a standalone, it is a really great series that highlights the strength of the friendships between these characters, so I recommend reading them in order.

I was privileged to be an ARC reader and this is my honest opinion of the book:
Really worth reading. A rather thought-provoking premise. The characters of Christine and Alexander and their misunderstanding each other because of their different backgrounds was interesting. It must have been very hard to be different for any reason in that society, and each of them had backgrounds that were different to the norm, especially Alexander.
Unfortunately I missed the first two books. Although the story was complete in itself, I felt that I should know Christine's friends better and look forward to catching up on them.
Once again, a good, clean, and well-written story. When I read Jennie's books I know that I will be able to read them to the end, a confidence I don't have with every author. Thank you Jennie!

A gentle romance set in Lincolnshire where life follows its own course away from the hustle and bustle of London. Sir Alexander longs for the quiet that Gracefield Park brings, despite its rundown condition, but he also takes his responsibilities to his family seriously. Just about every encounter he has with Christine Grey turns into a comedy of errors, except for a disaster that could have proved fatal. With gossip mongers spreading unfounded rumors, straightlaced Christine finds herself crumbling under the pressure, but even then she is willing to stand firm and not force Alex into a decision he might regret. Fortunately, kind and compassionate friends step in on their behalf, bringing this romance to a sweet conclusion. I received a copy of this novel as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Such a sweet story! I loved Christine and her practical, though unconventional ways. She, unfortunately did not start off on the right foot when meeting Alex. And no, it did not get better, it only gets worse. Because of this she’s very embarrassed and tries to avoid him. But fate steps in once again.

When traveling she is thrust into a life threatening situation. But is rescued by Alex. While in this forced proximity they both come to know each other a little better and see how they may have been hasty in their judgements.

Because of rumors and gossip they are forced to make decisions they may not have otherwise.

I really liked the loyalty and support of close friends. I also liked the not so subtle ways some of the offenders were chastised.

This is a wonderful book with a very happy outcome. If you’ve never read a book by Jennie Goutet you are in for a real treat!

Christine Grey is content to live her life as a spinster in her peaceful home in Lincolnshire. She is happy in her independence managing her brother’s house and visiting with friends. Alexander Thorne purchases a neighboring estate and has some unfortunate run-ins with Christine. There is an immediate attraction, but the two cannot seem to get along without insulting one another.

After some unfortunate circumstances the two are forced in the direction of matrimony.

Can Christine and Alexander see a future together? Is there hope for either to marry for love?

This was the absolute sweetest book. I kept wanting to see what would happen from one page to the next. The relationship between the main characters blossoms so beautifully as well as the friendships in this story. Another great book by Jennie Goutet.

"With that confidence came a determination regarding his newly be- trothed, and it was to remove the look of uncertainty in her eyes. He would give Miss Grey not only his hand in marriage, but his heart as well."

I love me an arranged/marriage of convenience trope, especially with a bit of tension and forced proximity thrown in! This was a delightful story of two people constantly getting off on the wrong foot, finally finding a tentative footing, only to be thrown off and find it again! Their constant mishaps had me chuckling, but I loved that when crisis hit their true characters stood firm and they fought for each other and themselves. This had amazinf friendships as well, relationships that stood firm when it mattered and would do anything for those they loved. And I truly appreciated the sense of justice, that while the strictures of society did dictate some of their actions, they also refused to be cowed and held to account those who treated then badly. This was a story of community, and the setting of Lincolnshire absolutely perfect. A delight from beginning to end and perfect series ending!

I'm so sad the series is over!! From the beginning, Christine and Alex do not get off on the right foot. At all. Alex is one of those cinnamon roll guys that you KNOW is full of charm under those layers, and I was not disappointed. I didn't want their forced proximity situation to end because it was just so good. But then it did, and guess what? The plot just got better and better! I'm also glad Gus wasn't left out, because Jennie, if you'd left him out I would have been forced to demanded another book. Just saying. The secondary romance was handled well, too. It didn't overshadow the main couple at all and naturally fit into the plotline. All of it was done well. Loved this whole book. Whole series. Fantastic reads I highly recommend.

This was a fun conclusion to this series of books about this group of friends. This is Christine's story. She has been a dutiful sister to her brother, not expecting a future for her. But a new gentleman enters the picture, a self made man, who turns her life upside down.

Alex has been well educated, even though he comes from an industrial background. He desires to be involved in parliament, and purchases an estate that needs lots of work, in hopes of increasing his scope in parliament.

When a freak storm causes flooding, and an unfortunate meeting in the midst of a flood creates a situation, his life takes a tumble.

I enjoyed the down to earth of these characters and friends. They have been fun to get to know.

This was a delightful romance with engaging characters. Some of the characters were from previous books in he series so it was good to catch up with those. Christine Grey is one of the main characters, she lives with her older brother. She is a very capable and practical lady who happens to be an excellent baker as well. Sir Alexander Thorne has recently moved into a nearby estate. He is an ambitious Member of Parliament. He hopes to marry a London society lady to assist him in his advancement. Christine and Alex don’t have an amiable first meeting but they are attracted to each other. I loved how loyal Christine’s friends are when she needs them most. There is a dangerous event and also how atrocious some people could be. I enjoyed reading when they were put in their place. I also enjoyed the fact that it took place in Lincolnshire, away from the London scene. It has a satisfying ending and epilogue.

I had an ARC for this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. Christine Grey is content living with her brother and not marrying, but would like a family of her own. Their new neighbor, Alexander Thorne seems to her to be headstrong and not caring about others. When she is stranded in a flood and finds her way to a cottage in the woods, Alex is the one who opens the door as he had also been stranded. When local tongues start to wag, Alex offers to marry her and she refuses because she doesn’t want a husband who was forced to marry her. An interesting look at the life of the gentry, and a book about finding love, getting along with others, and living life.

And once again, Jennie Goutet has sucked me right into Lincolnshire. I have seen the town, roamed the hallways, and tasted the dust, without ever leaving my chair.

I don't want to say much, because I don't want to give anything away, but I just adored Christine and Alex. I loved watching them come to care for each other, and showing the other how they truly felt. It completely warmed my heart.

But how bittersweet to come to the end of this series. I have loved visiting Lincolnshire and watching the Daughters of the Gentry mature and come into their own.

So darling!

I loved the natural way she kept putting them in each other’s paths in less than favorable circumstances. It built a fabulous sense of unease, and was equally balanced with an underlying attraction. Building the tension and chemistry in delicious ways.

Then to add a very genuine but unavoidable situation alone was very well done. I loved how awkward Jennie made it! The whole situation and story felt real as well as their reactions to it.

I loved the emotions on every page and loved the slow burn of their gradual developing feelings. Such a great awkward first meet to forced marriage to lovers story.
