She is waiting to be loved for the very first time. He is waiting to love her. But someone is dead set on making sure that never happens.
Widowed Arabella Northwick went from the home of a father who didn’t love her to the home of a husband who didn’t love her. It would seem at last she was on the cusp of forging a happier future for her baby and herself, were it not for her dead husband’s brother, who is determined to keep them captive.
Theo Dawson was born and bred into the textile industry. He has never wished to inherit the mill and run it, but as the eldest son, no other choice presents itself. He might be able to resign himself to a life of duty rather than happiness were it not for the beautiful, widowed Mrs. Northwick, who is coming to mean every bit as much to him as fulfilling his duties.
With a wicked brother-in-law keeping a tight rein on Arabella and swearing she will lose her son if she marries, and problems at the mill that prevent Theo from any hope of passing it on to his younger brother, the two hopeless lovers have arrived at point non plus. What they will need to overcome—their only chance, in fact—is a stroke of good fortune.

4.5⭐️ Really loved this one. It was set in a very realistic way and I’m going to say again how glad I wasn’t born during this time. I was so upset at Arabella’s circumstances and I can’t even imagine how painful it all was. The very nerve of everyone in her household, it just drove me crazy. And she held herself with dignity and grace and I was in awe. And let’s not forget Theo! He was captivated and I loved how he never gave up. A sweet romance with lots of turbulent moments. This was a very satisfying clean romance and I hope you add it to TBR! Thanks to Jennie Goutet for sharing this precious story with me.
Jennie continues her gentry series about a woman who's never truly been loved and a man who will do all he can to make feel cherished. There are some heftier obstacles to overcome, most importantly her own child which she doesn't even own the guardianship right to.
This is truly a sweet romance. The couples attachment is quick so it's only the obstacles that prevent them from making a more solid connection. The suspense aspect to the book is probably one of the more stronger veins of the story as well as being a single mother in a world where women were not given rights they should automatically have.
We also got some cameos from the first book in the series although this can still be read as a standalone. I really loved Theo. He truly has this golden retriever type personality that would do anything to claim the woman he loves at all costs.
This is a cute romance for historical lovers with a tad of mystery, romance and made for a quick read and a great happily ever after!
I haven't yet read Jennie Goutet's contemporary novels, but I've read all of her other books. And I think this one *may* be my favorite.
First, I love the dedication: "This is dedicated to the downtrodden, the oppressed-the ones who feel that somehow they are not enough. You are." Haven't we all felt like that at one point or another?
And then you get to the story itself. The main female character's name is Arabella, which is a name I wanted for one of our girls when I was pregnant, so I was immediately drawn to her. My heart broke for her and the stress she lived under. Her fear was palpable, and I wanted to take Northwick down myself!
But then you get to the plot twist! My heart sped up, my mouth dropped, and I couldn't WAIT to see what happened next!
Buuuutttt I can't tell you any more than that. Go get yourself this book and tell me how you like Theo and his heart of gold. Tell me how precious David is. Talk to me about Arabella. Because after you read it and bring yourself back to the present, you'll want to.
~I was given a complimentary copy of this book. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.~
Regency romantic suspense?! I am here for it! Jennie Goutet is a must read author for me and this book may be one of my absolute favorites. If you love protective heroes and despicable villains you love to hate, you’ll enjoy this book!
Arabella Northwick has constantly lived under the thumb of others. From her uncaring father & husband to now a tyrannical brother-in-law, widowed Arabella is forced to capitulate to his demands if she wants to remain with her little son. When circumstances become unbearable & fearing for her son’s life, she flees with David & runs to the one man she can trust.
Theo Dawson has been enamored with Arabella since he first met her. Wanting to court her, his hopes are dashed when he realizes the controlling George Northwick would never allow anything between them. He returns to his mill in Newark & the unfulfilling work he never wanted. When Arabella shows up on his doorstep needing his help, he does everything in his power to protect her & find a way to free her from her brother-in-law’s clutches.
I loved Arabella & Theo. They and little David make such an adorable family. Arabella is such a sympathetic character. She was put in such an untenable situation. Her willingness to do anything to protect her son was so admirable & my heart ached for her. I loved watching her grow more assertive especially with Theo’s love & support. I also loved how Theo’s sister & her friends in Lincolnshire rallied around her.
Theo’s love & protectiveness of Arabella & David made him such a swoony hero. I loved his quiet gentleness, but also his fierce defense of Arabella. Their first kiss was amazing.
There are some intense, suspenseful situations that had me on the edge of my seat. The last 3rd of the book was one twist after another. George is definitely abusive & manipulative & you just keep hoping he’ll get his due.
Highly recommend this clean, romantic, suspenseful Regency! Though part of a series, it can be read as a standalone, however, readers familiar with the 1st book will enjoy seeing friendships rekindled & strengthened. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own & voluntarily given.
I’m always up for reading anything Jennie Goutet writes! This was a great story of true love thwarted at every turn by an evil villain. Arabella and Theo were in need of a happily ever after, but her brother-in-law was blackmailing her by threatening harm to her son. There seemed to be no way they could ever be together.
If you like a romance with themes of good over evil, found family and faithful friendships, mystery, suspense and danger this book is for you. Jennie has a way of creating characters that are likable and relatable, leaving you cheering them on from the sidelines. Don’t miss this!
Arabella’s was such a sad character. Her youth and naivety made some of her actions seem a little out of sync with her nature. Theo was a dear man but he I don’t think I ever really figured him out. One minute he was wise and caring and the next minute he is trusting his little brother with dangerous investigations. I wanted to smack the nurse and most of the rest of the servants. Her brother-in-law was such a despicable villain. There were parts that moved slow, some that were unrealistic, and some that didn’t make sense but overall it was an interesting story and worth a read. It is the second in a series and I wish I would have read them closer together as I had forgotten a lot of the first book. It was fun to revisit those characters again and I expect another will be coming in the series.
A clean story. Another excellent book from Jennie The second in this series picks up the story of Arabella and Theo from the first book. As ever the characters are well developed, and Jennie takes care to make the factual side of the story is as accurate as possible. Okay I hold my hand up, and whilst Jennie has kindly acknowledged my assistance she is the one who provides the magic in the plot and writing, I merely provided information about Lincolnshire and England. It is a mystery and a delight to see what the story line/plot is and how the information is used, and she has not disappointed. The plot twists are very enjoyable and it is also nice to see the continuity with characters from the first book in the series appearing. I thoroughly recommend you read this and follow Arabella’s trials as she tries to emerge from her late husband’s, and her bother-in-law’s controlling natures, whilst trying to protect her son from her bother-in-law’s influence, and deal with her feelings for Theo. The book can be read stand alone, but I think it is enhanced if you read the previous book first. Can’t wait for book 3!
Whilst my involvement with the book is acknowledged above it was only factual information, and I emphasise that my thoughts and views on the book are my genuine and honest opinion.
When I think of sweet romance...this is the type of book I think of.
Jennie Goutet is the master of smooth writing for me and I am a big fan of it.
I loved the romance between Arabella and Theo. I loved the single parent trope paired with the protective hero. So much sweetness happening when those two are combined! I loved the extra level of friendships brought in from characters we saw in book 1. My heart went out to all of these good characters and wished I could have helped them through the difficulties-you will feel like you want to be on the inside of this story!!
I loved the added suspense this book had to offer! I was on my toes and holding my breath waiting to see how things would resolve. I loved the Cinderella type feel of this one, while still retaining its own original storyline.
Another great book from Jennie and I can't wait for more!
Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.
Content: abusive/possessive husband and guardian, true friendships, hero male main character, single parent trope and kisses.
A fantastic book! It was definitely intense as Arabella, a bit wilted and timid from neglect and mistreatment throughout her life, had to contend with the machinations of her wicked brother-in-law. Using her child as a weapon was a pretty powerful strategy against a loving mother. She did not have an easy time of it. Theo, of course, was just the kind, thoughtful, and caring man that she needed and deserved. The romance was sweet and lovely, in spite of them not seeing a way to have a future together for much of the story. I enjoyed all their interactions. They were a wonderful hero and heroine. It was also great to see familiar faces from the first book and glimpses their lives. Theo’s family provides some new engaging characters as well. The challenges that need to be overcome, and the attached intrigue really kept me engaged. I appreciated that, while these were circumstances that most people would never face, the way the characters addressed them felt like the way real, down-to-earth people would. They didn’t do or say fantastical things. It felt very grounded to me. It was a great book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is book two in the series, and there is carryover from book one, but it can be easily enjoyed as a standalone. I do recommend reading book one though. This is a sweet and clean romance with no harsh language.
Arabella is left in a horrible situation when her husband dies and life seems to thwart her every turn. When she sees a chance to escape she takes it, but love seems impossible. Meet Theo. 🔥 Talk about a stroke of good fortune. Theo is all things good and longs to help Arabella. But the road is not easy and filled with peril.
This story has a creeper. You know the kind where the bad guy just gives you the heebeegeebees? Yep. I absolutely abhorred Arabella’s brother in law. Fully.
Ok. On a lighter note. Actually this book isn’t light. I felt all the heartache and longing, holding my breath for some happy. And we do get it. Little glimpses and glances and stolen moments. ❤️ It’s an adventure that take our hearts on a chase!
Though there is heartbreak, there is also joy in good friends and the strength of hope. Love the cover that gives us a glimpse of how far Arabella will go to rid herself of disappointment’s rope.
I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.
A Stroke of Good Fortune was another sweet romance by Jenny Goutet that I truly enjoyed. Her writing is so smooth and enjoyable. I felt like this book was Cinderella meets North and South. The main character, Arabella, is in an impossible situation trying to protect her young son, while completely dependent on the decisions of her brother-in-law. Our hero, Theo (loved how perfect this name was for our good hearted quiet hero), was so sweet to Arabella and I loved every second he spent with her and her son. So many sweet tender moments that melted my heart.
This story is one where you have to keep reading, because it is so unclear how a happily ever after will be achievable. I loved the added mystery to be unraveled in this sweet romance.
If you love sweet regency romance, this one is for you!
I liked this one. It had a lot of tension and a feeling like you have no idea how it will all work out. The villain is really evil, and the romance is so sweet.
This book is a prime example of a star crossed lovers super sweet romance. Ugh the heart ache of finding the perfect person to marry and love but not have it be possible killed me. And Theo and Arabella were two of the sweetest people too!! Arabella’s life was so hard! It was heart breaking to read what she had to go through. I loved to read her love and sacrifice for her son David. Having a son myself, it tore my heart in two. Theo is such a great man. And I loved all the previous characters in the other books making a significant contribution in the MC lives too. There was helplessness but also hope. I listened to the audiobook and recommend that medium.
SPOILERS and book notes: Theo and Arabella are both so sweet. Arabella told theo her all troubles and that she is afraid of her bro in law. And that she was also afraid of her late husband. That she has to stay with the evil man or he will take David her son. So he can’t court her. So instead he offers his protection and friendship. I loooooove him for this. Protect her please!!! She needs unconditional love. Arabella is clever on how to hide things from her bro in law though. She has to watch where she goes and who she talks to. It would be a very hard life. Aww At only 56% Theo told Arabella that she has his heart but won’t persue until he can free her from her bro in law. Then SHE kissed HIM. Awwww!! Arabella is such a good mom! Her protectiveness and sacrifice for her son is inspiring. It makes me cry just reading about the evil bro in law taking David. Yeah they rescued him and they get married HEA. I love Honoria and Phillip had a baby too.
Oh, my word! I absolutely loved, loved this book! So much sweet romance with a suspenseful plot!
Young widow Arabella knows she can never marry again or her cruel brother-in-law will enforce his right as guardian and take away her young son.
Theo has been enchanted with Arabella since they first met, and when a dangerous situation leads to Arabella and Theo spending time together, love between them grows. And yet there is no solution that allows them to have a future together...
What to love: Regency romance Forbidden love Widow/single mother Controlling family Strong friendships Suspenseful scenes THEO!!!!!!! That first kiss Villian you love to hate The rescue scene Arabella's protective mothering Found family Plot twists "I would go to the ends of the earth for you."
I was hooked from the beginning but oh my, the last third of the book I was seriously on the edge of my seat!! So many twists and turns and I loved the action and suspense.
And the romance? Be still my beating heart. The chemistry between them felt very natural and genuine, Theo declared himself to not be a hero but he absolutely was...and a swoony one at that! Loved Arabella's courage and strength, and she and Theo were perfect together.
If you are a fan of sweet regency romance with some suspense, then you absolutely need to add this one to your reading list!
I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.
"And yet...her heart filled with something she'd never had before. It was the fullness of friendship and love. That alone made almost any prospect bearable." Arabella has long been a slave to the whims and control of others. Her main source of joy is her son. When her husband dies, leaving guardianship rights to his brother-in-law, Arabella finds herself in her most precarious situation yet. He uses his power to manipulate her and puts her in positions to try to force her to obey his will. When she meets Theo, she hopes for more for the first time in her life. As her circumstances grow more and more difficult, she reaches out and find some of the greatest gifts of all. This was such a wonderful story of friendship and love. Theo is the best! I loved the way he worked so hard to create a safe place for Arabella and her son so unselfishly. I also loved his family and the way they opened their hearts and homes to help someone in need. I was not prepared for the wickedness of the brother in law- he was atrocious- and it added such a unique sense of intrigue to this love story! I was amazed at Arabella's love for her son and the way that she put him above all else. I felt like it was a powerful picture of a mom's love. This is such a tender and unique love story I was so thankful to get to read! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I knew within the first little bit of listening to this book that I was going to love it. And hate it. I so despise an evil and manipulative man abusing women. And this book has a real villain to hate. I had to keep reminding myself that I already knew the book would have a happy ending but oh, the angst getting there.
Arabella is a lovely woman born into a horrible situation. It is amazing that she can stand at all after all the emotional abuse she has endured. Theo is perfect for her. They both secretly held on to their initial attraction to each other, never expecting to meet again. And upon that next meeting they quickly lose their hearts to each other but alas, it can never be. That psychotic brother-in-law in his manipulations makes sure of that. It seems a hopeless lot. How will they ever get to that happily ever after? I spent so much of this book with my heart in my throat. Even got teary.
It is a satisfying HEA though. Worth all the angst to get to it.
I love Stevie Zimmerman as a narrator. She always does a great job bringing a book to life.
Potential triggers: abuse Sex: no Language: no Violence: yes - verbal & emotional abuse, threatening situations, perilous situations, gun shots * I received a complimentary audiobook from the author and voluntarily chose to review it.
A Stroke of Good Fortune is the second book in Jennie Goutet’s Daughters of the Gentry series. I received an ARC copy and this review is my honest opinion. Life is not fair. Especially in Regency England. Especially if you are a woman. So when Arabella Northwick at the old age of 16 is told by her father that she must marry a man much older than herself, she does it. She provides an heir, but her late husband’s brother is made guardian of the child. And he is as mean as his brother. So what is this lonely, abused woman supposed to do? She can hope. She can hope that the servants will listen to her. She can hope that she has friends to support her. She can hope that she and her child can get away with her from her brother-in-law. So does her hoping win out? Does she get a stroke of good fortune? Is there any justice for what has been done to her? You are going to have to read the book to find out! I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. And if you haven’t read any of the author’s other books, you will want to read them too!
I enjoyed this story about Arabella and Theo. They were both in a rough spot, both only seeing life through duty.
Arabella was married off at a young age to a much older, unkind man. When he unexpectedly died, she is left in the control of her brother in law, as he is her son's guardian. Her brother in law is cruel, controlling, and makes her life a living hell.
Theo has taken over the family mill after his father died. It was not on his list for his life, but he must continue for the family sake.
As these two meet during the previous book, they meet again and things are rekindled. But can fortune smile on them to allow them to be together and keep her son with them.
I enjoyed the intrigue, the courage, and the willingness to keep on trying that the characters showed in this book. We all need to find that courage, to keep on trying, even when it is hard. I also enjoyed the good friends that were had in this series, good friends are hard to come by, so keep them close.
Jennie brings us another marvelous story with excellent characters and enduring love. I loved the quiet courage of Arabella and her determination to fight for her son. She never expected real love to come her way and it was so good to see such a love come with Theo. He teaches her that she is worthy of love and protection as well as a safe place to live with people who care for her. But more than that, he helps her become brave on her own, which I was so glad to see. I also really liked the tense moments of suspense that were included. Mr Northwick is a fantastic villain with plenty of reasons to despise him. I was very pleased to see how everything ended so he got precisely what he deserved, the vile Toad!! Definitely add this highly engaging story to your TBR, it’s one you don’t want to miss.
I received a complimentary ARC of this story from the author via BookFunnel. I am not required by anyone to write a positive review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.
In the Regency period, men had unreasonable power over women legally. Arabella suffered under a father, husband, and brother-in-law. As a widow she meets Theo at her best friend’s wedding. Kind, compassionate, considerate Theo changes her life. His family gives her a circle of friends who provide support, safety and encouragement. Honoria, Christine, and Trudy showed her life could be better. Along with Gus and Philip, Theo takes action to give her protection and hope. When she finally has the courage to express her desire to assert herself, her brother-in-law takes threatening steps to isolate her. In the meantime Trudy’s husband Vincent reacts to the evidence Theo’s brother Anthony takes to him from Arabella. At the dangerous climax, Theo, Philip, and Gus bravely confront her brother-in-law among smugglers. Suppressed passion unconditional love, hope, and optimism create a very engaging, exciting story !
Another delightful volume from Jennie Goutet! She is one of my favorite Regency authors, and I was pleased to get a complimentary advance copy of her latest book, A Stroke of Good Fortune. It will be available July 31st. This story follows Arabella, a very young widow, and Theo, a bachelor who is in love with her. They fall for each other right at the start, but many obstacles stand in the way of marriage. The setup is creative and refreshing, while the romantic tension and climax to the happy ever after remain engaging and satisfying. I love that Jennie’s characters are unique and likable, and I was totally invested in the drama. There’s a villain in this book, slightly more sinister than a typical regency romance, but I loved hating him and appreciated the conflict he added to the plot. Regency fans—snag a copy of this book and check out all of Jennie’s amazing backlist!
What a sweet story of growth, sacrifice, and of course love! Two of the characters whom we meet in the first novel get their own development now, and it sure is good to see how good triumphs over evil in the end! Arabella and Theo, both kind, loving, sacrificial, and it is amazing to see how their desire to love and be loved in the midst of difficult circumstances won in the end! The story does have a truly evil, manipulative, dangerous character that doesn't regard anyone's life above his own whims or desires, so it might be trigger for some but I was impressed with Jennie's way to gentle it in such a way that the evil doesn't speak for itself but rather illuminates the contrast with good. Some moments showed more emotions and some showed more action (especially, last 30% of the book - couldn't put it down, and of course it was almost midnight!), but the overarching theme of love, sacrifice (esp. the sacrifice of a mother), vulnerability grips from the beginning. You find yourself cheering for Arabella and Theo from the get-go. Another thing that I just love in this series is the theme of friendship. The friends are solid, steadfast, and come to the aid no matter what! I'm definitely looking forward to seeing their own HEAs.
I received my free copy from the author but my opinion is my own and I’m so happy I got the chance to read this story.
There are no limits when a vicious, greedy character covets what is not his in the first place. After the death of her husband, Arabella Northwick discovers the lengths her brother-in-law will go to strip her of power and access to her beloved son. Her meeting with Theo Dawson is her light on the horizon, but even Theo is unable to break through the barriers her husband's brother is erecting. Nevertheless, they are not without friends, and although it does take some investigative work, the cracks do start to appear and the means by which to take down an evil man become evident. This is a gentle romance with some suspense, but fortunately, the novel does come to a good conclusion with justice being served to the villains of the piece. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Arabella has really never known love in her life- not from her father nor from her late husband. The one love she does have is that of her sweet toddler, David. However, she is trapped in a terrible cycle with a brother-in-law who has guardianship of her son. She will do everything she must to protect her son and her first true experience of love. She also has burgeoning feelings for Theo Dawson, a kind merchant who also seems possibly interested in her. How will she pursue a possible future with Theo and protect her son?
This was another sweet, clean romance from Jennie Goutet. This also had a large element of suspense and a bit more action than her previous regency era reads. The tension and twists created a very satisfying HEA. Another read I can recommend to any age, although the themes in this book are a bit more adult.
Timid widow Arabella has never had the chance to make her own decisions or to fight for what she wants but she would give her life to defend her son from harm. She is forced to submit to the dictatorial behaviour of her sinister brother-in-law because as her son's legal guardian he threatens to take the child away if she does not do as he says. When she meets kind-hearted, gentle and dependable Theo, the attraction is mutual but her brother-in-law soon puts an end to any hope of romance. However, as the brother-in-law's behaviour becomes increasingly menacing, Arabella starts to fear for her child's life... A superb tale from Jennie Goutet that kept me on the edge of my seat right through to the end. Her characters feel very real and I love the way she has interwoven into the story rich historical detail and a sense of place.
Fantastic! You get so many feelings with this one! Arabella and Theo are darling. And is there anything better than a man playing with a child? I contend there is not! Arabella is a widow with a son. Her brother-in-law is an “ugly costumer”, I mean really really terrible! He has sole guardianship of Arabella’s son and won’t let her forget it. It’s such a hard situation that you’re not sure how it’s all going to work out. But, don’t worry it does! 😁 George’s (the brother-in-law) treatment/patronizing/threatening of Arabella may be hard for some to read, so just a heads up! A well written villain that’s for sure! I was definitely wishing him 6’ under from the first chapter…😅
A very enjoyable read. I loved this story. Arabella has such love for her son that she would do anything to keep him. Her brother-in-law has complete guardianship over her son,David, and he uses it to control her and blackmail her. It’s horrible, I felt so bad for her. Through all this she finds love with Theodore who is such a great guy and does everything in his power to help her and David escape. Arabella, Theodore and little David make such a cute family. I really enjoyed all the side characters and thought it nice how many friends Arabella had and how they were so willing to help her. Overall a great story, and I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Another period romance. Some of the other books by the author has some lovely humour sprinkled in. This one does not, unfortunately. The biggest let-downs here for me was 1. A passive, helpless heroine. (Though she does somewhat redeem herself at one point where she takes action.) 2. And a weak story point.
If you want a strong heroine, steer clear of this one.
