A good fantasy book gets you into the world without a huge info dump, and gets you to care deeply for the characters. A good retelling gives you enough of the original to make you realize the original source material yet still keep the story fresh. Overall, this book did a good job of both!
Firstly, our characters. The author did a thing I really liked in this book, in which we got three POVs total--Darian, Eric, and then Ashley. Normally in a romance you only get the POVs of the love interests, so I liked hearing from someone who was outside the relationship entirely. I really liked all three of the characters, and liked that they had very distinct voices.
Ashley takes on most of the characteristics of the Cinderella aspect of the story--but instead of falling in love with a handsome prince, she would like to be left alone, thank you very much. Her stepmother and stepsisters were perfectly fine, and she isn't impoverished. All she wants is to read and not marry, and definitely not help a prince thwart an evil plot and save the kingdom. I adore her and want to be her best friend, if she would have me. (I am also very intrigued if she is going to get her own book)
Our dear star-crossed lovers are very noble and just, even if one of them does live in the stable with the horses. Childhood friends torn apart by Darian being sent away, when Darian returns he is surprised to see how Eric has been treated in his absence. The feelings they both had as teenagers seem to still be there, but can they really be together when Darian is expected to take a bride in order to take the throne?
Darian and Eric were very sweet together, and they definitely have a slow burn with each other--after all, when Darian returns Eric isn't even allowed to speak in front of him. This is a largely closed-door romance, so there isn't much spice, but I really liked the tender moments they had with each other.
The plot that wasn't romance centric of this book was mostly good overall. The evil plan was a little too convoluted for my taste, but it did all come together in the end. The big twist was entirely predictable, but to be fair anyone who had ever read a fantasy novel probably would have been looking for it, so I didn't take issue with it. The one thing I do wish is that we got a better sense of the overall kingdom. The vast majority of the book takes place in one part of the overall kingdom of Rhodantha, and I wish the rest of it had come into play a little more, or even got a better sense of how Aries was laid out.
Overall, this was a good fantasy romance, and if it is indeed setting up a series I will definitely be interested in reading more!
CW: violence, whipping (punishment, not kink), kidnapping (check the front of the book for more, the author very kindly put a list up)
