Why would a prince need a ball to pick a bride? He's in love with the palace stableman, of course!

Prince Darian has met all the requirements necessary to claim his father’s throne; at least, he thinks he has, until his sinister cousin Bertram reveals a law that states Darian must marry by his twenty-fifth birthday, or lose the crown.

With only four weeks to find a bride, Darian turns to his beautiful, irreverent, clever friend Ashley for help before a grand ball is to be thrown in his honor. But there is another who catches the prince's living in perpetual silence is Eric, the stronghold stableman, whose kindness disrupts Darian’s plans to hide his nature.

Each day that passes is another day closer to Bertram’s takeover, and he’s counting on Darian to fail. While Eric has the prince’s heart, the stableman also carries a secret mark that could jeopardize Darian’s claim to the throne. To protect the nation he loves from a tyrant, Prince Darian must choose between true love and living a lie.

A twist on the timeless Cinderella story, Stableshoes was a both predictable and refreshing to read. I found it to be quite immersive and quick to read. The writing style while simple was not infantilizing to its audience and the characters were interesting.

I did have an issue with the language used and how it seemed to switch back and forth between the medieval and modern times, and I predicted the twist quite early on in the book but it didn't affect my experience too badly. I loved all the characters especially Ashley and if I'm correct, it's hinted that she might be getting her own book.

I really enjoyed this and I can appreciate that even though a sequel is heavily implied, the author still wrapped up enough of the relevant plot lines for this to be considered a standalone.

Usually, I find retellings… not so appealing, because you obviously know where the story is going. Stableshoes is different because even though it takes inspiration from Cinderella, it has its own story and direction. I’m not only saying this because it’s a M/M book; the author actually put some flavor to the story: drama, politics and a bit of erotica.
None of the aspects before are strong enough to make Stableshoes an adult’s book, but they are present enough to grace the story with some contrast.

This is both good and bad.
It is good if you’re looking for a book that has a bit of everything but you don’t want to explore a specific genre for too many pages or you don’t feel that you’re ready to dive into a political-satirical-1000-pages-long royal drama.
It is not good if you, like myself, want to read a more detailed and explicit sexual romance.

The characters are well written, the dialogues are well written, the style is actually very good and you can tell the author is quite experienced in the craft as she managed to write three different POVs that work altogether to support the narrative without any of them feeling unnecessary.

Stableshoes is supposed to be part of a series, but the ending does close most of the situations so it can totally be read without worrying about cliffhangers.

The Best: Most of the book was on point.

The Worst: It was predictable and the plot twist didn’t work for me. Also, I think the author almost abused of the deus ex machina.

The writing was great, the story full of adventure and thrills. The two main characters were destined to be and cute together, with side characters that add to the intrigue. This is my first retelling of a classic fairy tale and I found it very enjoyable. I enjoyed this for the most part.

My only criticism is that although the two main characters are very cute, I felt like it was all a bit flat. That’s not me saying I expected lots of spice, no, I’ve read other books without spice that make up for it in connection and chemistry. I just didn’t click with them as much as I wanted to, and I wasn’t sold on their chemistry. It felt like maybe a bit too much was going on.

Still, despite that, I enjoyed the story. Good versus evil. Characters revealed their true nature and received their comeuppance. It was a fun take on a story we know well.

My preference for illustrated covers very much didn't betray me with this book. It is a fantasy m/m retelling of Cinderella, if Cinderella was full of political intrigue. It was exciting, gripping and very satisfying in the end. I really liked it and I'm glad I had the opportunity to read it

This is a 367-page Medium Paced, Hurt/Comfort, an Awakening Fairytale-Retelling Forbidden MM Romance. In a creative move, the story is a mix of 2 fairytales: Cinderella and the Prince & The Pauper. Forbidden childhood friends who never lose their spark find each other as adults to fight for what’s rightly theirs and for each other.

--Such false loyalty, born of fear, is not loyalty at all.--

Written in alternating chapters triple POV, the setting opens to a medieval-like time period similar to the EVER AFTER movie starring Drew Barrymore. Where a young prince doesn’t see the line drawn in the dirt between royalty & commoner, making friends with the sooty beggers and workers around the castle. After an unfortunate accident while playing, where a child stable worker takes the blame, the prince is sent off to meet the requirements to become King while the servants are punished with silence, fear, and brutality.

--Animals were easier to please than people. They couldn’t judge a person’s status at first glance. We were all equal in their eyes.--

When Prince Darian returns, time has passed, but conditions haven’t changed much. Even with his title, and the King wanting him to separate himself from the everyday person he wants to be, they still won’t give him the grace or power to stand on. Every rule, law, and evil is working against them all. Darian must find a wife to claim the crown before his cousin, Bertram, blemishes the name of the family even more than it is. However, his heart belongs to someone else. The sturdy and silent stableman had only 2 cares in the world, take care of the horses, and try to stay invisible. When Darian comes home, the Stableman's self-control gets worn down like an overused horseshoe. Standing in front of each other with memory of the past coming to light, making them pine for what they lost so much more. Having to push it aside, they have to work together with Ashley to get the safety the country needs while proving that no matter the identity and/or title the individual holds, it’s only as good as the soul within that person.

--"Trust with a man is much like that with his horse, made of mutual understanding and respect. If your horse trusted you, then I trusted you.”--

This book was an unexpected surprise!!! Holy Horseshoe!!! The blending of the two stories was genius!!! This has to be the best retelling of a fairytale I have ever read. It will have you feeling everything they are while smiling, pining, laughing, and crying. Then the tension of danger is thick that only a special blade could possibly slice through it. This is a novel I will be recommending to everyone I know. Even though it's an MM romance, it's perfect for a beginner in the genre. One reason is because it's an easy, non-spicy story to fall into without having to think hard about the romance. The author plotted and characterized with so much detail, angst, and emotion that the everyday reader would be completely safe to enjoy the novel. The spice (.25/5🌶) was delivered in a non-descript presentation, but instead with feather light passion and emotional reaction.

--"Darkness creeps closer, and I see more clearly than before.”--

The ensemble was so creative. Ashley is our Cinderella! She is the fiesty female presence that I didn’t know I needed and the perfect hag best friend to our 2 MMCs. I was not expecting her as a character at all, and when she first appeared, I disliked it until a couple chapters later when pieces were put together like a broken glass slipper being repaired. She also added a detail that isn’t used in MM romance but is a modern situation that supplied an extra flair to the plot. Bartram’s character progression and escalations were written perfectly and really keeps the reader on the edge with the MCs. There is a redemption plot as well that added an extra dose of love and regret to the plot to push the reader over that edge. The creativity of the author is like a once in a lifetime epiphany that I feel she may pull off again in the future and will be following along to see what she comes up with next.

--Love stripped our masks away. Hope was the fuel of our future, conquering the fear that had welcomed me home.--

💜Happy Reading🫶

This is a heartwarming romance that defies expectations while exploring themes of love, duty, and identity.

Prince Darian thought he’d met all the requirements to inherit the crown until his cousin Bertram reveals an inconvenient law: Darian must marry by his twenty-fifth birthday or lose the throne. With only weeks to go before a grand ball, the prince turns to his best friend Ashley for help in finding a suitable bride. However, Darian’s heart already belongs to Eric, the strong, quiet stableman who disrupts his plans with an unexpected and magnetic presence.

As Darian navigates his growing feelings for Eric, he must also face the political scheming of his cousin, who is counting on Darian’s failure. Caught between the love he feels for Eric and the duty he owes to his people, Darian must decide: can he sacrifice his true self to preserve the throne, or will he risk everything for love?

Filled with moments of tension, tenderness, and surprising twists, Stableshoes is a story of love’s power to challenge societal norms and reshape destinies. The chemistry between Darian and Eric is palpable, making their journey both heart wrenching and beautiful.

A good fantasy book gets you into the world without a huge info dump, and gets you to care deeply for the characters. A good retelling gives you enough of the original to make you realize the original source material yet still keep the story fresh. Overall, this book did a good job of both!

Firstly, our characters. The author did a thing I really liked in this book, in which we got three POVs total--Darian, Eric, and then Ashley. Normally in a romance you only get the POVs of the love interests, so I liked hearing from someone who was outside the relationship entirely. I really liked all three of the characters, and liked that they had very distinct voices.

Ashley takes on most of the characteristics of the Cinderella aspect of the story--but instead of falling in love with a handsome prince, she would like to be left alone, thank you very much. Her stepmother and stepsisters were perfectly fine, and she isn't impoverished. All she wants is to read and not marry, and definitely not help a prince thwart an evil plot and save the kingdom. I adore her and want to be her best friend, if she would have me. (I am also very intrigued if she is going to get her own book)

Our dear star-crossed lovers are very noble and just, even if one of them does live in the stable with the horses. Childhood friends torn apart by Darian being sent away, when Darian returns he is surprised to see how Eric has been treated in his absence. The feelings they both had as teenagers seem to still be there, but can they really be together when Darian is expected to take a bride in order to take the throne?

Darian and Eric were very sweet together, and they definitely have a slow burn with each other--after all, when Darian returns Eric isn't even allowed to speak in front of him. This is a largely closed-door romance, so there isn't much spice, but I really liked the tender moments they had with each other.

The plot that wasn't romance centric of this book was mostly good overall. The evil plan was a little too convoluted for my taste, but it did all come together in the end. The big twist was entirely predictable, but to be fair anyone who had ever read a fantasy novel probably would have been looking for it, so I didn't take issue with it. The one thing I do wish is that we got a better sense of the overall kingdom. The vast majority of the book takes place in one part of the overall kingdom of Rhodantha, and I wish the rest of it had come into play a little more, or even got a better sense of how Aries was laid out.

Overall, this was a good fantasy romance, and if it is indeed setting up a series I will definitely be interested in reading more!

CW: violence, whipping (punishment, not kink), kidnapping (check the front of the book for more, the author very kindly put a list up)

This is a new to me author and I can not wait for book 2 in this series.

You could say this is a famous repeated storyline but it has a twist or two. It has everything you would expect plus a little more.

Darian is a prince who will eventually become King. As a youngster he has two that he can call friends. But his father has had enough of Darian running wild with not a care in the world. He has decided, with help from others, to send Darian away after he was injured while rough housing with Eric, the stable hand. He never even got to say goodbye to Eric or their friend Ashley.

Eric while trying to help Darian gets into quite a bit of trouble. He has now been banned from speaking, to anyone at any time. Once Darian comes back many years later to begin to take over for his father as King through drawing a map. But Darian is desperate to talk to him to find out what has happened since he was gone. Eric does not fall for that and is able to tell him where to find Ashley by drawing a map. However once again Eric gets caught singing and the King and his followers decide to try and teach Eric, once again, but Darian wants to try and protect him from the brutality of their teachings. Darian decides what better way to show his soon to be followers he too has been in their place. But while recovering Darian ends up locked in his room. Eric can not stay away from Darian and he returns to the childhood way of climbing in his window to make sure he is ok after his beating.

Will Darian be given roadblock after roadblock to be able to get the throne? Will they make impossible for him without even knowing his secret? Does his friendship with Ashley help him or put her into danger? Is there a fraction who is against Darian taking over? Will Eric just want to die to help Darian succeed? Will Eric be just the one who can save Darian and the kingdom?

Again this author is a new to me, this book is just about at my limit with brutality so I do want to read book two with hope we can see where everyone is now.

Jo Morgan Sloan is a new-to-me author, but Stableshoes won my heart. I have had the pleasure of reading some of the best MM fantasy over the last week, and this is right there with the rest. I have read many retellings of the fairytale, but this is by far my favorite loose interpretation.

Sloan really brought the characters to life. I love the details she provided about their persons, but I loved the characters’ personality development even more. I felt for Eric and his situation, and Darian was an absolute prince. Ashley also played a prominent role throughout the story, bringing a new twist to this famous tale. I enjoyed reading all three characters’ points of view, and it was a nice change… Especially since this was not a love triangle.

The plot of the story kept me engaged, even though at times it was a bit predictable. However, that did not distract from the plot of the book, which was intriguing and a unique retelling of Cinderella. So many details brought to mind that story, but it was the little things, not the overall impression.

I am happy to say that I have found another author whose works I look forward to exploring. This is the first book in a series, and I think the next storyline will be a sapphic adventure that I will happily be reading. If you love fantasy or a good Cinderfella story, this is an excellent example of great writing.

Happy reading!

This book—this book! I am absolutely wrecked in the best way possible. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever come across another romance that can surpass the raw, tender, and achingly beautiful love between Darian and his Stableman. Their connection leapt off the page and wrapped around my heart. I found myself grinning like an absolute fool during their most intimate moments, and by the end, I shed a few happy tears.

Stableshoes is a Cinderella retelling like no other I’ve ever read. It’s fresh, heartfelt, and inclusive in ways that feel both intentional and effortless. Jo Morgan Sloan has created a world that welcomes queer characters not as sidekicks or tokens, but as fully-realized people worthy of epic love stories. The way the familiar beats of the Cinderella tale are woven into this new narrative is incredibly clever. It honors the bones of the classic while breathing new life and queer joy into every scene.

What surprised me most was how deeply I cared not only about the romance but about the setting of Rhodantha itself. Sloan’s worldbuilding is immersive without ever slowing the pace, and I found myself longing to linger there long after the final page. While Stableshoes works beautifully as a standalone, I can not wait for the return to this world in its sequel, Seven Shards.

This book is everything I want in a queer fairytale romance: fun, swoony, emotionally resonant, and full of heart. I can’t recommend it enough.

Stableshoes was my first book by Jo Morgan Sloan, but it definitely won’t be my last. Even though I usually prefer fast-paced stories, the prose here is so smooth that it wraps around you like a blanket and carries you into a quiet, magical world.

Sloan builds a realistic political fantasy: there are no spells nor magical creatures, but there are forgotten prophecies, mysterious birthmarks, and a kingdom you can almost smell: as hay in the stables, lemon on the horses’ coats, gossip drifting through palace corridors. From page one the story pulls you in, and the two heroes quickly steal your heart.

On one side we have Darian, the prince who comes home to claim a throne he doesn’t want, as he can't share it with the person he loves. Then, we also have Eric, the stableman whose voice was taken away by royal law and whose heart beats in time with the hooves he cares for. Their romance is deliciously slow: every accidental brush of fingers, every coded note, every stolen kiss feels like a tiny spark that could light up the whole place.

Running underneath the love story is a tight palace-intrigue subplot. A clock is ticking: if Darian doesn’t choose a bride before midnight, his cousin Bertram will snatch the crown and wipe out anyone he calls expendable.

So, if you enjoy fantasy that grows out of daily life rather than grandiose fantasy stories, or a medieval-flavoured setting, or maybe a queer romance where the big question isn’t “Who am I?” but “How can we make our love survive?” then Stableshoes will probably sweep you off your feetquietly and gently.

Thank you Jo Morgan Sloan and Gay Romance Reviews. I was given this book as an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

Stableshoes is sorta a Cinderella retelling, but instead of focusing on the girl at the ball, it’s all about the Prince and his love for the guy who cares for the horses in the stables. I really connected with the royalty/commoner tension. It was not just that their relationship is forbidden because of status, but also because the prince is expected to marry a woman and produce heirs. That dynamic gave the whole story the same fairytale feeling you get from Cinderella, while still making it feel fresh and emotional.

Even knowing it’s inspired by Cinderella, I didn’t find it predictable. There are some twists along the way, and I was honestly impressed with how the author wrote them. The villain was also done really well. By the end, I was ready to crawl through the book and stab them myself. The only thing that threw me off at first was the marketing and what I’d heard from friends. I went in expecting something a lot darker, but this turned out to be more romantic and suspenseful than grim.

And I can’t forget the spice. It’s definitely on the lighter side. I’d probably rate it one chili pepper and personally I wish there was more. Still, the romance, the tension, and the fairytale vibes carried me through. For me, this was a fun read.

Happy reading friends,

This is a book more focused on plot than people — and for a lot of readers, that’s fine. For me, though, I found it very hard to care about what was happening to Darian and Eric because, well, they didn’t care. Eric gets beaten several times, and whipped badly, but he never seems much put out by it. Physically hurt, sure, but emotionally? Meh.

Darian gets whipped, but other than noting the physical pain, he doesn’t care. Doesn’t care that his cousin whipped him in the stables, sadisticaly lashing him three times in a deliberate attempt to break skin and leave wounds. Meh. He’s fine, his cousin’s fine, life goes an and it’s never brought up again.

Ashley, Darian’s friend, gets beaten and kidnapped with threats of being assaulted, but she’s over it as soon as she’s reunited with Darian and Eric. No one seems to notice that Bertram is a monster until the very end of the book even as he’s whipping, beating ,kidnapping, and poisoning people. Because … no one cares.

Still, the plot is good. The world building is solid, the writing and pacing are good. I just wish that someone, anyone, had cared for even a moment because it might have led to me caring even a little for what was going on in this book.

In its unexpected examination of love, responsibility, and self-discovery, this touching story warms the heart. Prince Darian was certain he was ready to take the throne when his cousin Bertram revealed a pesky rule: he had to tie the knot by the time he turned 25 or risk losing it. With a huge ball just around the corner, the prince asks his closest friend Ashley for advice on who might make a good wife. Nevertheless, Darian's affections already lie with Eric, the reserved but powerful stableman whose surprising and irresistible charms derail his intentions. Aside from dealing with his developing feelings for Eric, Darian also has to deal with his cousin's political plotting, who is banking on Darian's downfall. Darian has a difficult choice: will he put his family and the throne at stake by sacrificing his authentic self to protect it, or will he put his love for Eric and his people at stake by risking all for them? Stableshoes is a tale of love that defies convention and changes lives, full of suspense, sensitivity, and unexpected turns. Their moving and beautiful trip is made possible by the undeniable chemistry between Darian and Eric.I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

Thank you to BookSirens for providing an aARC of this novel!

I quite enjoyed this book. It actually kind of reminded me of The Scottish Boy by Alex de Campi, only a little less melodramatic. I also really liked Eric and his devotion to Darian, it was very sweet. An issue I had with this book is that I just do not understand what the King was up to. He was just all over the place as a character. I would think I was starting to understand him and then he would do something that completely contradicted my previous thoughts. Even though this was a little confusing, it didn't really impact enjoyability. One thing that did impact enjoyability was Bertram. I liked his character archetype, but he just came across as too dumb and obviously evil to pull it off. The fact that anyone could interact with him and think "this man is trustworthy" is beyond me. While I found the main antagonist annoying, I still really enjoyed this story.
Also, while this book is technically part of a series, the plot in this installment is completely wrapped up, so you don't need to worry about any cliff hangers or anything.

This was a cute queer retelling of Cinderella. The world building was very superficial and I wish there were more details on how magic worked in the world. To be honest, the characters didn’t have much depth. I found the character of King Jacob to be most confusing. He starts of cruel, then becomes feeble-minded and lets Bertram carry out all his cruelty, but then has a complete 180 degree change of heart in the end right before he dies. Bertram was just a stereotypical, power-hungry, manipulative villain. Jett even more so since he has an evil scar on his face. Ashley gives me sapphic ace vibes and I felt bad that she was dragged into this mess by the audacity of men. Darian gives off “He’s just Ken” vibes. Eric was probably my favorite character and had the most depth - but him being the lost prince was sooooo predictable. I kept thinking maybe there would be a twist, but no, the lost prince was the orphan with a strange birthmark and mysterious past. Despite all that, I did enjoy this book and it was a fun, lighthearted read.

Many thanks to the author and publisher for the opportunity to have read an advanced copy this book for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Prince Darian returns home, ready to take over the throne. He has worked hard to meet all requirements only to find another one added. He must marry before his twenty-fifth birthday or the crown goes to his cousin Bertram. Not sure what to do with four weeks until the deadline, he turns to his friend Ashley. She does try to help while Bertram works hard to ensure Darian fails. There is another major problem. Darian is in love with the stableman, Eric, who has a few secrets of his own.

Stableshoes turned out to be an incredible tale of perseverance and courage. Bertram was determined to takeover the crown using any means necessary and some of those methods were quite extreme and nasty. This leaves Darian desperate, but just as determined to be successful. Darian, Eric and Ashley are phenomenal as they work together. Captivating from beginning to end, Stableshoes will please readers of MM stories filled with champions of all sorts that combine to save the day.

Jo Morgan Sloan is a new author to me. I enjoyed this novel but not as much as I expected. The first third of the story moves slowly. I had just about lost interest when the action picked up and the characters became more likeable. I felt Darrian's frustration with his father and his surprise when the villain began to show his true colors. Eric was so sweet and managed to make a life from the crumbs the king allowed him. He survives the cruelty directed at him and stays a sweet and loving man. Ashley is harder to get to know but I understood her need to hide from the world and immerse herself in books. I can relate.
I gave only a three star rating because the book seems to be written by a young adult for young adults. Which it may very well be but I didn't realize that before I began the book. I generally find YA books to be a little too wholesome for me. This book has no profanity, very little violence and almost completely closed door intimacy. It would certainly be appropriate for a young adult to read.

“I’m cleaning you up like a proper prince again. If King Jacob or Commander Bertram come to see you tomorrow, you will show them that you cannot be brought down so easily. You will still be everything you’ve ever been and more. The people believe you are ready to be king, to take a wife, and rise to the rank. Please don’t let us down.”

I loved this book. Great world building and wonderful characters. I loved both Darian and Eric. A prince in line for the throne and a kind stableman; a villainous cousin trying to steal the throne out from under him using a law that he must be married by a certain age. I find stories like this exciting and love fairy tale retellings, so I was eager to see this couple fall in love, defy the odds and those who don't want them to be together, defeat the villain, and find their HEA. Eric was so sweet and kind, but how could a commoner have any kind of future with the future king- should he be able to claim his crown? My heart hurt for them both at times.

This is the first story I've read by this author and I would read more. 5 stars

Better than Cinderella!!! Or worse, because with Cinderella, the stepmother and stepsisters are just mean and nasty, slave drivers, but in this book, there are so many hateful characters! I’m glad I received and ARC and I leave my voluntary review, because I’ve never heard of this author before, and this book is amazing. Except for Bertram, and Jett, and the king. I really wanted to strangle them half the time! The other half, I wanted to throw them off a cliff! This author portrays the characters so well! All of them! Whether it is a character like Trina that appears just a few times, or the main characters, they all have a depth to them that helps you feel connected to the story and rooting for the MCs HEA. It’s incredible. I had to take breaks while reading this because some characters made me really angry, and it’s just a book! Got too invested on this story, so beware before you begin reading, because it’ll suck you in and not let you go.

This author was new to me, and - boy - did I love this story. The world-building and character-development were in-depth and compelling. The MCs Prince Darian, Eric, and Ashley were fighting an uphill battle against the evil Bertram and .his cohorts, who seemed to hold all the cards, and always be one step ahead. Bertram was one of the most vile characters ever, pretending to be on Darian's side, while under-cutting him at every opportunity. The story had multiple twists and turns on the journey to HEA, some predictable, others not, but all payed out masterfully. In the end, difficult decisions must be made between duty and love, country and self, if Bertram is to be foiled, and a peaceful kingdom maintained. It was an intriguing tale that kept me on the edge of my seat through the drama and suspense. It's an MM romance, but really low heat.

Stableshoes was my first Jo Morgan Sloan book and it definitely won’t be my last. The writing is smooth and atmospheric, pulling you into a world that feels both magical and grounded—like you can almost smell the hay in the stables or hear the palace gossip drifting down the halls.

Darian, the reluctant prince, and Eric, the voiceless stableman, made such a sweet pair. Their slow-burn romance—every brush of fingers, every stolen kiss—was lovely, even if at times I wished for a bit more spark between them. The palace intrigue subplot added tension, with Darian racing against time to secure the crown before his cousin steals it away.

For me, some parts felt a little flat—mainly the chemistry between the leads—but overall this was still an enjoyable, thoughtful retelling. If you like your fantasy with political drama, quiet romance, and a touch of classic fairytale vibes, this is worth picking up.

As a Cinderella retelling, this story was a fun new voice. While the basic premise was predictable as most retellings are, the characters were fully formed with personalities and foibles all their own. The pacing was quick without losing details, allowing for beautiful descriptions of the settings, fashions, and expressions without losing the forward momentum.

The flip flop between archaic and modern vocabulary can bring the reader out of the story in places, but not so much that it ruins the enjoyment. The MLs are sweet and occasionally dense, while Ashley quickly becomes a favorite to read about. Hopefully, she has her own book soon.

Recommend for fans of Minerva Howe, R. S. McKenzie, and Will Julep

The book blurb called this a MM retelling of Cinderella. It was… sort of. Loosely based, very loosely based on the fairytale, the ending was semi-predictable. But the getting there was anything but. The author put enough twists and turns into the story to give it some original flavor.

True love versus loyalty to your country. Lots of court intrigue and backstabbing. Excellent characters and nice world building. Bertram was an evil, himbo villain. I loved the loyalty and affection between MCs Darian and Eric. Ashley kept her head on straight, offering bestie advice and aid.

I liked the book, however, I have read better retellings. A four, four and a half star reading. I'm not sure this author was for me. I would be hesitant to get more.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.5 stars

This is a fun, Cinderella-inspired story with plenty of twists and turns, As a character, Darian is everything he should be. He knows how to ride and duel, professes concerns for the common folk, doesn’t want war with the neighboring kingdoms, and does his best not to break the rules. He’s a nice guy. Alas, that’s pretty much all there is to his personality. Nice, good, and loyal, but with no real defining characters to give him a third dimension.

If you want a fairy tale adventure with some interesting takes on the Cinderella story, this book might be something you’ll enjoy.

StableShoes by Jo Morgan Sloan is a delightful MM historical romance that hits all the right fairytale notes. I loved the Cinderella-style vibe, with Prince Darian being utterly endearing as he navigates the treacherous waters of court politics, striving to win his people’s trust while schemers try to tarnish his reputation. Ashley’s POV added a perfect layer to the story, acting as a clever decoy without overshadowing the romance. I also adored Eric—the quiet, loyal soul whose commitment to Darian was heartwarming, especially during the masked ball, where destiny seemed to hang in the balance. The story balanced intrigue, friendship, and romance beautifully, creating a light, immersive read that’s easy to fall into. Fairytale vibes meet engaging historical romance perfectly here. Highly recommend for fans of MM historical tales with a touch of magic and heart.

Eric, a stable hand, Darian, a prince, and the urchin Ashley were young friends. Running freely together until Darian’s father makes an edict that silences the stableman, sends the prince away for ten years, and Ashley disappears.

I thought the author effectively gave Eric a voice even though for a good portion of the book he didn’t speak. His interactions with the horses was an important part of the book. I liked Eric and Darian. Their romance wasn’t too graphic but it was sweet.

Sprinkled partly with Cinderella’s tale, a truly evil villain, hidden truths, wonderful heroes, a strange fairy godmother, and (i’m thinking) maybe a little Snow White thrown in but that may just be my interpretation.

I enjoyed the book.

** ARC review **

This was a fun read. I loved how different it was from usual retellings and I only recognised the Cinderella theme near the end of the story. The writing was great, I kept saying "one more chapter" because I wanted to know what was about to happen, and ended up finishing this in just two sittings.

The plot is fun to read but there could have been a bit more depth into the history and magic that was supposedly there. There is some great world building with a lot of potential.

The characters are amazing. While Darian seems like the typical prince, Eric has a lot of depth in his character and helps grow Darian's character. I absolutely loved Ashley because she really was a strong female character.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this.

Thank you to Book Sirens, the publishers, and the author for giving me early access to this eARC.

4.5 stars. This book was excellent. It is about a man named Darian who is prince to his land who is forced to marry prior to being allowed to rise to the throne. If he is unable to do so, his cousin will rise to the throne instead. Darian finds himself fascinated with the stableman who cares for the horses.

I enjoyed this book so much more than I ever expected to. It is a loose Cindarella retelling with a M/M romance instead. I felt like the pacing of this book was great. I was engaged with the plot steadily. Ultimately, I could not put this book down. I look forward to reading more from this series!

Darian has done his part to prepare to take over the throne from his father only to have to deal with a threat from his evil cousin Bertram who wants the throne by hook or by crook. Darian has to deal with a clause that requires that he marry to ascend to the throne. Which he is reluctant to do because he is harboring feelings for his stableman. Like so many fairytale retellings there are many things afoot here that threaten not only Darian's claim to the throne and ability to be with the one he loves but the kingdom as well. He and his compatriots work together to work their way to a good ending which was a relief. But it was fun reading along to see how they would get there.
