Nyxari Bondmates #1

Alien Warrior's Claim

Rate this book
He’s dangerous, otherworldly, and says we're fated to be together. But can I survive this bond—or him?

The crash was just the beginning. Stranded on a hostile planet, marked by strange silver patterns beneath my skin, I’m hunted by predators I can’t outrun.

Enter Lazrin—a seven-foot-tall alien warrior with glowing golden lifelines and a claim I don’t understand. He calls me his lifebond, his destined mate, and every instinct I have is screaming at me to run. But the longer I’m near him, the harder it is to resist his pull—or the way he protects me like I’m something precious.

Trusting him could save us both… or destroy what’s left of my humanity.

This would have been a 4 star read it “translation pendant glowing softly” or “translation pendant ensuring I understood” hadn’t been repeated 24 times in the first 79 pages.

Yes, I checked.

We fucking get it. You have translation pendants. At least until chapter 10 when all of a sudden they disappear after being brought up every 5 sentences the first 30% of the book.

I had a good time reading it though I echo what others have said. I wouldn’t classify this as a ScFi romance but a SciFi novel that has a romance in it. In a SciFi romance the love story should be the main focus and I didn’t see it in this book. I still really enjoyed the book. It’s the first in an ongoing series and I want to keep going but I just wanted to clear it up a bit.

It opens with a huge space ship with tens of thousands of humans flying to a new world. But the ship has a catastrophic failure and they end up crashing on a strange planet and only a thousand or so survived. One of the survivors is Mirelle, one of the crew members. Just before they crash landed, she and a number of the women started developing strange silver markings on their skin.

They aren’t the only intelligent beings on the planet though. The other race are Nyxari. They have lived on the planet for centuries. When they see this crash, they hide while observing them. They are taller than the humans and with tails. As a visual I pictured the Na’avi from Avatar. Their chief warrior is Lazrin. They are an interesting race. They were once much more advanced and explored other planets but centuries previously a huge battle had happened and they lost most of their technology. They are generally a peaceful, intelligent people. When the humans are attacked by some monsterous creatures, the Nyxari come their aid. It is then observed that
Lazrin has gold markings on his skin that mirror Mirelle’s indicating some mysterious bond.

I found this world building excellent with the villain being a militaristic member of the earth crew taking over with of course the attitude that the humans are superior and they need to deal with the Nyxari.
The romance of course is between Mirelle and Lazrin. While not central, it does play a large role in the plot of the story.
I easily got sucked into the story, the conflicts and the growing relationship between Mirelle and Lazrin. Avatar is one of my favourite movies and this story with its slight similarities is something I really got on board with. I look forward to more. This book gets my recommendation and a thumbs up. It’s available on KU so you really should try it if you like this genre.

I had a very hard time with this book and seriously considered DNF. It has so much potential was written in a way that I only became more frustrated as I went.
First of all I really disliked the FMC. As the ship was crashing, an energy wave passed through the people, and some of the women were changed. They all get different special abilities. There is also a special connection to a certain native male. It's a fated mate situation but the connection makes it so they can feel each other's thoughts and emotions. So she gets superpowers and can tell exactly how her man feels. But all she does for most of the book is fret about how these changes make her "less than human". She's extremely wishy washy, too. At one point, she gives in to the pull them spends 50% of the book avoiding the dude who has patience beyond human understanding.

This brings me to my next point. There were some things that were SUPER repetitive. First, over and over we heard how "the translation stone ensured she understood his meaning.'" The translation stone ect on and on. Yes, we understand they are using a translation stone.
Then we learn about his prehensile tail, over and over... every time his tale is mentioned, it's a prehensile.
These are just two examples, there were also a lot of very repetitive conversations.

DNF at 74%

Ok, I tried, I really did... I had this book in my tbr for a while and with each new book that came out I simultaneously wanted to read them while also waiting until more books came out so I could binge read...

But I can't go on any longer, the overall plot is interesting... a spaceship carrying hundreds of humans crash on an unknown planet and changes start to show in some of the women, we have an incompetent leader, aliens inhabitants, dangerous climate and deadly animals, it was really entertaining...
And I liked how competent the FMC behaved when organizing the people after the crash...
When the MMC appears and we get to know how kind and respectful he is I thought that this book couldn't get any better... and well, it went downhill from there...

I really disliked the romance, a lot. The relationship wasn't balanced at all, she had way too much power and he was a doormat. She behaved childishly and put herself in danger but still expected to get saved but not have her decisions questioned... she was quite ridiculous.

The worst was the imbalance, HE made sure to ask for clear consent any time he even wanted to get close to her or treat her wounds, BUT SHE never once asked for consent before touching or kissing him... even though she KNEW that the bond she felt hesitant about deepened with every touch. HE was always thinking about her wellbeing and her feelings but SHE didn't even think about his emotional and physical pain (because of the unfulfilled bond) until one of the other women pointed it out...
And I will never understand, nor will anyone convince me that a person who KNOWS the depth of a person's feelings but that currently does not reciprocate, decides to be intimate with said person is not an AH... She specifically asked him what the bond meant to him personally and he was so sincere and open about it, she proceeded to sleep with him but when the bond got stronger, she chickened out and decided to leave him with no word and ignore him.

Meanwhile, he made excuses for her, "she's in a strange world","she is changing"," she needs time ".... BUT being in a sh*tty situation does not give anyone the right to be an AH and hurt others... if she wanted time to think she had it, she didn't need to give him hope only to later crush it mercilessly...

ok, rant over... I don't think I will read the rest of this series... I don't want to if this is the overall tone. I might try with other series of this author and check how I like them.

Uncomfortably Close to Losing My Mind

This book, while not a unique plot or idea, has so much potential. Though I’ve read many different series achingly similar, I was excited when I read the blurb. It’s like being able to possibly reread a favorite book for the first time all over again. Well, that’s what I hoped for anyway.

What I got was a hit and a miss where the negatives could have, mostly, been solved through the author having an editor and beta readers (or better editors and beta readers, sorry to say). They would have caught:

❌ The HIGH amount of repetition (for example, the amount of times the FMC thought something hit “too close” and how many times she had the same thoughts and same conversations throughout the book made me start to really question if I liked her.

❌ Similarly, the large amount of “telling” and not “showing”. When, writing, you have to find that balance. Personally, I don’t think this book had it. There were so many different conversations, plot points, and general possibilities that could have been focused on throughout- instead of simply repeating the same scenes. What resulted was not just way too much repetition, but also plot holes and other things rushed. One of the rushed things being the relationship of the FMC and MMC- where most of the book was her not liking it, sprinkled with some intimacy, and then a sudden relationship at the end.

❌ The timeline. This killed me when I was trying to read. It was simultaneously a victim of trying to be too realistic, without consideration for how to accurately translate that in book form, and a side effect of ineffectively trying to move along the plot. Like, I understand the FMC isn’t one who is going to be an “insta-love” type person, but being 68% into the book before she decides to even try to actually talk to her mate is too much. Or when they find out that people are being experimented on, but the FMC forgets to tell her mate until days later- and then three days after that they finally start putting together a plan to rescue them. None of the timing made sense.

❌ Continuity Errors. *sigh* One of the biggest ones was how “Rivera” was one of the women who first left the human camp. But half way into the book she was suddenly one of the newcomers coming from the human camp. In a series where the premise is not an actual new one, any little thing can take me out of the story. This was a big one for me. Or how, not once did I see that just anyone could “mind speak” to just anyone. But in the last part of the book the FMC was mind-linking to other women. Or how, at the beginning, the security forces who survived were few, but at the end they overwhelmed the Nyxari in numbers and strength.

❌ Simple grammar and syntax. Like when people are speaking to each other in their minds but for us readers it’s randomly mixed into a paragraph with no italics or quotations to separate it from normal text.

What I also got was a MMC that I enjoyed but got to see very little of (in the grand scheme of things), a FMC I couldn’t stand, and a villain that was the equivalent of when an author either can’t decide on any better villain OR doesn’t quite know when to stop.

The earlier mentioned negatives could be solved, relatively, easily. Overall simple fixes for issues that probably bother more than just me. But some things kept me from enjoying it, personally. A book where the main villains are (shocker) humans isn’t something negative to the plot or unrealistic. But, I found my patience wearing thin with just how long this book was and just how much of it was the same thing.

Then, ironically, the unrealistic aspect of humans continuing to be under a human’s care who is literally torturing and starving people. Even with bias and xenophobia, I don’t think it would be very realistic for the humans to not stand up against him. Maybe they wouldn’t necessarily befriend the Nyxari, but for hundreds of humans to let a handful of people control them to that extent in that short of time was just weird for me to try and believe.

There were also instances where I thought the language was… formal. Not something that would necessarily be weird if it was just the dialogue. But, to me, it read as when a writer is used to writing essays or nonfiction. But that’s something one could probably overlook.

I had hoped this would be my new binge series, but I’m not even sure if I’ll pick up the next one. But this book and series definitely has so much potential that I’ll probably be thinking about it later.

3.25 ⭐️

As for if I recommend it, I think this one is decidedly a “determine for yourself” book. If you’re like me and easily pulled from a story when there are grammatical, continuity, plot timeline, or spelling issues… maybe check back in a few months to see if the author has fixed some of it before trying to read. If you can typically ignore these things, you’ll probably enjoy it as it is now!

Holy Moly! Ava York and Bella Blaze’s Alien Warrior’s Claim sets the universe on fire! Mirelle is a logistics officer aboard the Seraphyne which crashes onto a planet, killing most of the humans on board. She tries to gather survivors but must fight the militaristic Hammond all the way even as she and a few other woman realize that the power surge just prior to the ship’s catastrophic engine failure has etched circuits into their skin. The planet is filled with dangerous fauna and plant life and the native people’s are resonating to the marked women causing Hammond to become paranoid, turning on his own. Mirelle meets Lazrin who turns out to be her fated mate and so much more. The action is unbelievable! The characters change constantly. The sci-fi features are incredible!

Meh - and kind of a cliffhanger

This was okay. Had potential. I ended up getting bored. I will not read the next ones as they imply torture and I don't like it. It also ended in a cliff hanger. If I cared about the story, that would have irritated me because there wasn't a warning. However, I don't care. . . Which I guess speaks for itself. I'm sad I paid for this instead of using unlimited.

Incredibly repetitive

The plot is there and this could be great, but the book is repetitive to an exasperating degree. Removing this excess would probably cut the book length by a third.

I couldn't take the repetitiveness if I had to read one more time about the translation stones made sure she understood, or how someone made her pause I was going to throw my device from frustration. It needs major editing

so much potential but repetitiveness is ungodly.

Loved the concept. At first it was great and then it just kept going down hill. Probably not going to read anymore books. Sucks cause I really like the concept with the markings and the enhancement
abilities.

Too descriptive

For a Romance Genre even a science fiction one this one is lame. No steam, ridiculous tedious action writing. A cookbook would be more interesting.

I liked the premise. And I had high hopes. Im willing to read another, because I hope the author learned after this one, but we will see.
The FMC spent most of the book whining. I understood being worried about losing herself. But multiple times, she understood she was herself, she understood the MMC had done nothing but make sure she had autonomy, she knew how much the unfinished bond hurt the MMC. then, within hours , she would be right back to whining and/or having no knowledge she had previously.

*spoilers*

So the main reason I took stars off was actually not the whiny FMC. When ai read a book, I dont need scientific accuracy. If your world says that when people stand on their head, rainbows shoot out their eyes, I will accept that. It is your world, build it how you see it. But after you do, you have to follow your own rules. FMC can sense danger more clearly, and days before things happen. Yet she had no clue they were being surrounded and attacked in the woods, causing the MMC to need to transform to his feral side. We needed to see this side for some future thing, I am guessing, but it had no impact on this book. After that point in the book, her danger sense worked really well for fighting worms and knowing where predators would attack from. But it worked not at all for most other things. It felt like the author had in mind the abilities she wanted to showcase, and an end point she wanted to get to, but no idea how to tie them together.

The final battle of the book was super confusing. They were going on the offensive, not waiting for Hammond to attack, yet they did nothing and waited for Hammond to attack. Suddenly there are almost no alien warriors, so they cant fight. What?

Tl;dr The book has a good premise, but enough inconsistencies to draw you out of the book every chapter or 2 as you wonder if you just dont remember something you read 10 minutes ago.

Good

When a human colony ship crash lands onto another world, the survivours find themselves dealing with changes.
Mirelle, a logistics officer, was transformed when they entered the atmosphere, the markings of her skin somehow tying her to the planet, and to a native warrior, Lazrin.
As the human society struggles with division and fear, Mirelle finds herself becoming more, wanting to get to know Lazrin, and looking towards a future that is perhaps even more than she anticipated.

This is, as the title claims, a sci-fi crash landing romance. On a world where humans are the alien invaders, they’re still dealing with prejudice, and all the other human conditions that can make or break a society.
Mirelle is an interesting character, who at times made me so mad with her seesawing thoughts. Lazrin, on the other hand, was infinitely patient- definitely alien because no human would be that patient!
Our antagonist, Hammond, on the other hand, I really wished would get eaten by one of the vicious predators on their new world!

This is a book of transformations, survival, and staying true to yourself. It’s an enjoyable read for SFR fans, especially those who enjoy alien heroes, crash landing tales, and an intriguing ongoing plot where you find out that the history of the world you’re in has a huge impact on the current time in which you are living.

Alien Warriors Claim: Crash Landing: Nyxari Bondmates #1

Wow! How I loved this book! What a fabulous story and world creation Ms. York has made. I've read a lot of sci-fi romance books but never one like this. She has thought out every nuance and detail and possible ability for our Alien men and our crashed surviving women. Even the bad guy is a fabulously nasty piece of work. They have totally lost it to ego and a power trip. Wait till you see who it is that she picked. It's pretty obvious in the beginning but I won't say.
The world she created is a mash up of primitive and way advanced. Not something normal or usual. I love what the bond represents. It takes total commitment and not the type you would think. Its a true sharing of oneself. What a fabulous idea. I doubt it would work in our culture. Too bad. But it works here
perfectly. Can't wait to get into the next book. I'm gonna start in a minute.
I don't know if I should say but I actually had a fantasy that included something like mind reading. The outstanding connection. I figured nah, it wouldn't work. Ms. York has proved me wrong. Just pure awesomeness! Loved it!!!

First, this is a CLIFFHANGER. Do with that what you will.

This story spent almost the entire book talking about two things: 1) the FMC's concern about her transformation, and 2) the MMC's obsession with consent. There's an astonishing repetitiveness to almost all dialogue because the two topics are all they talk about.

There's a third topic that comes up a lot. The indigenous tribe leader constantly tells the human females about new powers they may be gaining based on the earlier civilization. This info kept getting reeled out in a very "Oh yeah, our ancestors knew about that" kinds way that felt like magical thinking. Often it was sort of "just in the knick of time" to save someone.

Mostly I struggled with the slow, slow pace of this book, almost entirely driven by repetitive dialogue.

I really can't stand CLIFFHANGERS. This could have been a standalone if there hadn't been so much time on saying the exact same things over and over and over. I won't be continuing the series

LEARNING HOW TO SURVIVE IS THE MAIN STORY & FATED MATES IS SECONDARY

This book isn't your typical Romance story. In fact, what love story there is the secondary plot in the book, actually, there isn't much romance at all.

The primary story is a group of humans trying to survive on an alien planet a free their ship crashed. The women have been given powers flowing through their veins which if they match up with a native alien on the planet they are fated mates.

I couldn't put it down and read it in a day. Mirelle and Lazrin are fated mates but there isn't much development for a thorough love story.

I gave 4 stars because I would have liked more romance between them. Book #2 comes out on 05-13-2025 so I will read it to see if more romance is added to Book #2.

Nyxari are an odd race

There are a lot of facets to this book that make it good, but in some instances I don't see the logic that leads the Nyxari to just all out accept a human as their defacto leader. I also don't like Claire but I'm not sure where that is going. And why can't we just take Hammond out? There are questions that don't have real answers in the story. The writing is great, and I see these people and aliens, but one thing that really bothered me was why is she the only marked woman that seems to have a connection to one of the Nyxari?? Logic says there have to be others, but they aren't even mentioned. You should at least briefly touch on them even if you want to save them for another book.

This book had so much potential until it didn't.

This plot line started out new, exciting, different with so much potential. After the 4th chapter it was just repetitive nonsense that was used as fillers for prolonging this waste of a book.

The main female character (MFC) started out strong and intelligent. After the first few chapters she asked the same redundant questions and made the same statement in every single chapter! After the 9th chapter I was begging for this book to end.

I have so much more to say but I'm so annoyed with this stupid book that I just can't waste anymore of my being on it. I regret ever buying it.

unique story

This was a unique story of human change and connection on an alien planet. While I appreciated the attention to detail and the new experiences that come with an being on a new alien world, The characters fell a bit flat for me. Mirelle had a lot of repetitive thoughts and it was a bit aggravating as the story proceeded. There was a lot of redundancy throughout the book that detracted from the overall story. Overall, it was a good read, but I’m not eager to start the next book in the series as I fear I will encounter the same disappointments.

pragmatic

I really wanted to love this series. I couldn’t. The words I would use to describe the main characters are much more in line with pragmatic, stoic, or resigned. I hoped for intrigued, fascinated, or passionate. The description of the next book sounds more like what I wanted, but I’m not sure I trust that.
I was also disappointed by the antagonist. He is stereotypical and the way he’s portrayed makes it hard to believe that enough people would follow him to keep him in power.

nicely delayed intro

The beginning had some unexpected depth of thought as the girl adjusted. Then after the first storm, slow boring slog. She started to get super powers… but then stopped analyzing. It was like different folks wrote different parts. Was decent for a quick beach boom but couldn’t break into powerful sci-fi. It’d make a good date night movie though!

Multiple detail errors (who came with her to the camp. How much there was in supplies and numbers, who could understand without a translator, etc ) and a lot of whining. Started skipping around at 60%.
Cool idea. Wasn’t my cup of tea
