Prickle Island Zoo #5

Hold Your Horses

Rate this book
When socially anxious, secretly asexual, and thoroughly horse-illiterate Hollis lands a job at Prickle Island Zoo (by pretending to be a cowgirl from Wyoming), she’s just hoping for a fresh start . . . and maybe to hide away from the world with a Jane Austen novel and meerkat in tow.

What Hollis doesn't expect is to fall head over heels—literally—for the charming non-binary zookeeper, Heron.

Heron Lachlan knows that living at their family zoo on a tiny island and being ace means the dating pool is zero. Heron accepts that their longest running relationship will probably be with a literal goose . . . until Hollis trots in wearing a thrifted cowboy hat and lying through her teeth.

As zoo hijinks, escaped ostriches, and a meddlesome family of zookeepers bring them closer, Hollis and Heron must face their fears, their secret hopes, and their wildly incompatible knowledge of equine fun facts.

A light-hearted, queer rom-com about finding your person, embracing your truths, and rewriting the rules of love—Hold Your Horses is the joyful, asexual slow-burn you didn’t know you needed.

Each book in the Prickle Island Zoo series can be read as a standalone. Feel free to jump into this series wherever you like!

5⭐️ are not enough! I have loved every book in the prickle island zoo series but Hold your horses is the best one yet.

Heron and Hollis… sigh… couple goals! They are honest, real, raw and vulnerable with one another. They invite the other to be exactly who they are in each moment while sharing the emotional load of a relationship.

But my absolute favourite part of this story is seeing myself in a character so deeply that I started to feel like I want to be my true self, that maybe my strangeness is okay with the right people. Instead of staying away from people altogether I just need to find my people. Such a huge personal awakening wrapped up in a beautiful love story.

I adored basking in the love of Heron and Hollis, but also the love and acceptance of the gorgeous Lachlan family. And the constant giggles (well lots of laugh so hard I was crying) moments were exactly what I needed.

Thank you for another amazing Prickle Island Zoo instalment!

This has been my favorite series from the first book! This is the 5th book at the zoo and love the twins. Heron and his twin Crane are always getting into trouble even though they look alike they are very different.
Heron is ace, trans and demisexual and Hollis is ace. She was very attracted to Heron but dating as ace can be tricky with physical expectations. I just loved all their encounters and their talks. Hollis is also AuDHD which I love to see that rep in books. They both usually had issues communicating to people but they didn’t with each other.

I was so giddy as they both revealed pieces of themselves from their dual POV that made you realize they would be perfect for each other.

I think the reason I love these books is cause they feel like a warm bath, like the most comfortable safe space in the world. Ali has created this beautiful ecosystem with these characters that are so kind and supportive. They just want what’s best for their people. There are some annoying or frustrating people that pop up but they take care of their own.

I was so hoping you would set up Crane’s book the way you did as his storyline was being set up during this book. I screamed when that came up at the end (well I would have if I wasn’t on the bus).

I absolutely adore this series and Hold Your Horses is the perfect addition.

Heron and Hollis love story, while still surrounded by the chaotic zoo life and unhinged sibling banter, is gentle and sweet. Both asexual and both neurodiverse, they just get each other and their relationship is beautiful.

A wee bonus in this book is we get a glimpse into matriarch Evelyn’s own love tale and it’s what we’ve all been waiting for 💕💕

I received this book from the author and all opinions are my own.

Another extremely well written rom com with character sexuality diversity by Ali.

I had trouble putting this book down. The explanations were written in so well it made it easy to learn as well as understand how the characters were feeling.

Prickle Island Zoo is definitely a series I would love to see the extend family having books in the future as well.

Rom Com, LGBTQIA+, Zoo comedy what more could you ask for.

Every Mulford book is both an adventure AND a learning opportunity and this one is no different! Hollis and Herron are the absolute cutest and I cannot believe how old these kiddos are growing up since the first book! I already can’t wait for the next one!

I was blessed with the chance to read this in advance before its release to the world.
This continuation of the Prickle Island Zoo stories starts off five years after the last one. It is centred around Heron, who is an awkward nearly 21 year old 'Ace' of the Lachlan clan. In comes Hollis, who has embellished her resume so that she could 'escape' for the summer at Prickle Island and perhaps, maybe, secure a permanent job.
Neither of them are prepared of how well they enjoy each others company. Sure there is some drama along the way, some real, some imaginary and awkward, and some, that come from left field, especially when Hollis's parents turn up.
I enjoyed this book not just because of the normal 'Prickle Island Zoo' antics (Beaky), but also how the author capsulises the unique issues with being an awkward Ace who suddenly finds love but struggles to express it.
I did find the use of the They/Them pronouns throughout the book a little confusing, though I know they are common pronouns for gender ambiguous people. To me they sound like pronouns when using it to describe multiple people or a schizophrenic person, which is not Heron. Perhaps the author could use the pronouns that have been in use for gender ambiguous people since before Shakespeare, which is Xe/Xem. In fact William Shakespeare has used them in his plays to distinguish gender ambiguity characters (Rosalind in 'As You Like It') and schizophrenic characters (King Lear), he uses They/Them. This distinction has allowed people to portray these characters accurately since. So perhaps authors these days can see the merits of using the pronoun use in this way.
Still beyond this, the story flows well and deepens the relationships and dynamics of the other characters from the previous books, without the need to read those beforehand. The twists are wonderful, as I have now expected from the author. In saying that, one of the biggest twists involving Evelyn is something you are unlikely to expect, even if you are a seasoned reader of Pickle Island Zoo stories. It is worth reading right to the end, because there are a number of open questions left for the next saga.
Which I cannot wait to see what happens next.

“You are strange,” I said, and her brows knitted together for a second before I continued. “And I am strange. And my family is strange. And this job is strange. And this island is strange. And the life I hope to live one day will be a wildly strange one too. But I never thought I’d meet someone who made me feel like the best kind of strange, and that’s all down to you. Smart. Beautiful. Brave. Witty. And extraordinarily strange.”

Eeek! One of my favourite contemporary, queer-friendly rom-com series finally continues! To say that I was ecstatic to receive an email that my ARC for this was available is a complete understatement.

‘Hold Your Horses’ follows Heron, the fifth Lachlan sibling and one of a pair of chaotic twins, and Hollis, the socially anxious intern who’s lying about her past out of a desperate need for a fresh start. Theirs is very much a story that displays how love doesn’t always present in the same forms, and sings with the message that you shouldn’t settle for less than what you both want and deserve in life.

One of the things I love about these books is that because the series is so family-focused, many of the characters we have fallen in love with in previous books are still present in the background of the new instalments. It really makes these reads cosy and warm, and I definitely felt like even I was an honorary member of the Lachlan family while I was reading. Mulford always does an incredible job at representation through their characters and creating relatable characters. Even though I’m not asexual or non-binary myself, there were still many facets of both Heron’s and Hollis’ characters that hit a little too close to home. Both of these main characters are so nuanced and well-developed that I was definitely right there with them on the emotional roller coaster of their story. I think that’s why readers will fall in love with each instalment of the Prickle Island Zoo series - all the Lachlan family members are so lovable and actually feel like real, genuine people.

‘Hold Your Horses’ takes place five years after the end of Book 4, ‘Crocodile Tears’. The time skip between Books 1-4 and 5, while obviously necessary to age up the younger Lachlan siblings, was a fantastic way to rejuvenate the series. With the near entirety of the stories set on Prickle Island, there is little you can do to change up the scenery. Yet Mulford continues to surprise me with each book, bringing back familiar haunts and introducing new areas, alongside new ways to bring in additional characters. To be honest, it’s impressive how they’ve been able to create an entire island community that still has secrets to share five books into the series!

Mulford’s writing is honestly such a breath of fresh air, and reading their works simply feels effortless. It’s not often that I find contemporary romance books that are actually able to incite such deep feelings while reading them, but the Prickle Island Zoo series definitely delivers with its cosy yet plausible storylines and meaningful character development arcs. It is an absolute privilege to read these books in advance, and I always look forward to each new release.

Thank you to the author and publisher for sending me an ARC of ‘Hold Your Horses’. All opinions shared in this review are my own.

“I didn’t think anyone could ever break my heart, Heron, but you could. I’ve never loved anyone the way I love you.”

4.5⭐️1🌶

This book really brought me back to my days working at a zoo. I know I went about this series backwards...this is the first book I've read in the series. However, in my defense, rom com group series are usually built, so that each book is about it's own romantic coupling. Despite the fact that all the other characters in the book have, for the most part, already coupled up and had their own book. I actually liked starting in the middle.

Hollis is a twenty something zookeeper that is looking for a fresh start. She applies for and is accepted to Pickle Island Zoo. Where she quickly finds out that she is not the only neurodivergent person on the staff. The zoo is mostly run by one family, and most if not all of them are different levels of neurodivergent.

From the first day, Hollis is drawn to Heron, who is one of the twins that works in the hoof stock area of the zoo. They hit it off right away with minimal talking and shared hyper focus interests of animal research and animal husbandry.

This book is really perfect for me. Being that I am also on the neurodivergent spectrum, and I found most, if not all, of the interactions in this book very familiar. With the awkward silences and the word vomit when trying to cover up a spoken gaff, these two coupled up were really perfect for each other. Highly recommend this book for anyone on the spectrum, or if you love and adore animals.

A heartwarming and joyful romance

- I would like to thank the author for the eARC -

STANDALONE in the PRICKLE ISLAND ZOO series
Hollis is asexual and socially awkward, but determined to land a permanent job at Prickle Island Zoo, despite the small lies on her resume. That was whithout including Heron, the charming non-binary zookeeper who stole her heart the instant she laid eyes on them. Heron has made their peace with the fact that lasting relationships aren't in the cards for them, until a certain cowgirl comes trudging into their life unexpectedly. Between them, everything just feels easy and natural, and maybe it can be the start of something more.

I am never disappointed by this series (after all, it's my fav romance series for a reason) and this one was no exception. It's my first time reading an ace for ace romance and I was hooked. The characters were super complex and sweet and relatable, and I just adored the chemistry and compatibility between them. It was beyond addictive and I spent the whole book smiling at my Kindle like an idiot because they are just SO SWEET I can't deal with it. I adored that they worked through the issues by communicating, just understood one another and made perfect sense. Heron had my heart from the first book because they're just really touching and I want to hug them every time they're mentionned, and I found Hollis equally adorable, the two of them making the perfect couple. They might just have become my favorite from the series because they just scream green flag and I love that for them. As usual, the setting at the zoo and the impossible, laugh out loud situations were highly appreciated and the quirky, clever writing made it all the more addictive. I cannot wait for the next one!

I can't recommend this series enough, it's simply perfection.

*Special thanks to Ali K Mulford and the publisher for providing me with a copy of the eARC, I really wasn’t expecting it and was so chuffed, but this is still my honest review*

I love this series and whilst I have connected with some characters and books more than others, this was so sweet and wholesome I wanted to hug both Heron and Hollis. AKM is so good at handling diversity and Hold Your Horses explored non-binary, asexuality, being panromantic, being trans, autism, ADHD and a little bit of misogyny. I’ve read all books in this series so far and continue to be impressed by how much care is taken on getting the language, references and context correct that I always feel like it’s respectful but informative.

Hollis and Heron are atypical romance novel MCs and it’s what made the story feel so fresh. Being asexual there was no spice, which I do normally love, but would have made no sense to be here. Instead it was the most sweet, wholesome, fuzzy feeling kind of romance akin to its inspirations like Pride & Prejudice etc no sex, all romance. This would be a perfect book for people who prefer romances without spice.

The book was still fills with laugh out loud rom-com shenanigans, the ongoing family feud with the Madigans, and a reveal that I feel like maybe I should have guessed from prior books. I ended feeling satisfied and like I’d had a nice warm hug on a cold day.

I am so excited for Crane’s book next though because it seems like we are finally getting star-crossed lovers with the Madigans which we all knew was coming eventually. Bring on the enemies to lovers!

(more like a 3.5 star)

I have mixed feelings on this one.

On the one hand, I love that this is a thing. It's an important story to be told in today's world, with great representation for a group that I don't generally see represented in books (especially not their struggles). It sends several amazing messages that I think more people need to learn (myself included, apparently, as I promptly accidentally misgendered Heron shortly after finishing reading - my apologies, Heron! I promise I'm trying, and hope we can still be buddies ;) )

On the other hand, this one also felt a bit... lacking (for lack of better word) compared to the others. Less drama, more rushed, with things I'd love to have seen in detail glazed over. Everything I thought was going to happen didn't. Which isn't in itself a bad thing, I do enjoy being kept on my toes, but there weren't really any huge surprises to compensate.
It almost feels like this was a build up to the next book, which I'm now very excited for (because it sounds like at least some of the things I thought would happen here will be happening there), and yet this is still its own story.

Overall, I'm not upset to have read it, nor even disappointed. I applaud and thank the author for putting this out there; for telling Hollis and Heron's stories and sharing their struggles.
It may not be my favourite story of the series so far, but I'd say it was the most insightful (at least for me personally) and definitely needed to be told.

I was given a copy by the publisher (thank you!) and all opinions are my own.

I can’t even explain how much I love this series. If a book were a happy place, this would definitely be one of mine. I’ve come to love the Lachlans so much, and I’m continually sad to remember they are fictional and that I can’t just go visit Prickle Island Zoo.
I wasn’t sure how well I would connect with this book given that the characters are ace and that is not something I ever thought I would relate to. However, I really enjoyed both Heron and Hollis given the nature of their sexuality, they are both very upfront and mature, and I find it truly refreshing. I like that they are able to be blunt but also delicate about it. I also was surprised by how much some of their issues with sex related to me. Body fluids ARE gross! 😆 I also just like in general that this series makes me learn and think more about all the different facets of gender/sexuality and neurodivergence, and how it’s viewed by other people. Hollis’ family takes it more extreme, but their attitude pretty common and something I would not have seen as a red flag in the past.
Lastly, we received a bit of a bombshell in this installment and finally got some answers about family history. That one threw me for a loop, but I like it. It makes the final chapter - where our couple for the next book is hinted- even more exciting! I was wondering who would end up crossing over and I’m so excited for Crane’s story!

First I would like to thank Ali K Mulford for the E-ARC.

Hold your Horse is the fifth book in the Prickle Island Zoo series. A series that has begun to feel
like home. The characters in this series feel like real people, each sibling we read about makes
me feel closer to this series. And Hold Your Horses did not disappoint.

Hold Your Horses focuses on one of the younger siblings, Heron. Heron is nonbinary and has
been one of two mischief makers in the previous books, along with their twin brother Crane.

Heron grows up a lot in the time skip that happens before the start of Hold Your Horses. At the
start of the book, they are separating themselves from Crane and becoming their own person.
There is a lot of talk throughout the book about Heron feeling comfortable with who they are and
what they want.

Enter Hollis. Dear sweet Hollis. I wanted to wrap this girl in a hug so many times in the process
of this book. Hollis has Autism and Adhd. She is also Asexual. She feels like she is stuck on the
outside almost everywhere she goes. Jobs, relationships, her own family.

Hold Your Horses is a found family novel in every way. As much as I already loved this whole
family, watching them ban together in multiple different ways as this book went on made me
love them all even more.

I cannot wait to see what is next in store for the Lachlan family.

Thank you AK Mulford for an early copy of Hold Your Horses. This is Book 5 of the Prickle Island Zoo Series. How can this seriously be Book 5 already?!?!
I have loved reading about the Lachlan family and how much they have grown. And how much bigger the family has become. This
is a series that I hope keeps going and going.
I do not have a lot to say about Hold Your Horses. It has humor like the other books in the series. It has some slow burn build up. It has
a found family feel to it.
Hold Your Horses is my favorite of all the books in this series.
So… you are probably asking why I do not have a lot to say then… It’s because there is only one thought and one feeling that I had
throughout this book.. and my eyes are getting watery just thinking this. This book is about…
Finding Your Person.
Finding that special one. The one who understands you. The one who does not judge you. The one who holds you when the tears
are flowing. The one who breaths your air because it all just makes sense.
This read is simply beautiful. The acceptance of the Lachlan family is breathtaking. They open their arms to those that need it, and love
anyone no matter what. Thank you for creating this world, and I seriously hope you continue to bring the Prickle Zoo to us.

If you haven’t read any of the Prickle Island Zoo books yet, honestly… now is the time. The Lachlan family will completely envelop you in the biggest hug, with each sibling getting their own romantic journey. Think Bridgerton but with fewer balls, way more animals, and every child named after a bird.

Hold Your Horses is a brilliant continuation of the series and follows new volunteer Hollis, who is desperately trying to secure a permanent role at the zoo without anyone discovering she may have slightly stretched the truth on her CV. This book is definitely less spicy than the previous instalments, but that’s very much on purpose. Ali K Mulford introduces asexual representation in such a thoughtful, sensitive way, and I absolutely loved this direction for the series. It really highlights how “different” ace people can feel, especially when they’re surrounded by people who are very physically affectionate or joke about sex a lot.

Hollis and Heron gave me major star-crossed lovers vibes, and I adored how they helped each other figure out who they truly are while accepting one another exactly as they were right from the start. That said, the next book sounds like it’s heading firmly into enemies-to-lovers territory… and yes, I am completely here for that.

With LGBTQ+, pansexual, asexual, trans and neurodivergent representation, as well as thoughtful exploration of family attitudes when these identities aren’t accepted, this book and the series as a whole is so much more than those super cute covers suggest.

⭐ Five stars from me. ⭐

Hold Your Horses is Heron’s story. Prickle Island Zoo is one of my favorite inclusive and entertaining series, with the perfect blend of lovable characters and interesting animal facts. The Prickle Island Zoo is a place that I wish I could visit for real! Heron’s family is incredibly loving and supportive, but they don’t quite know parts of their identity yet. Heron is non-binary and ace, which means it’s hard to find a partner. When a new trial zookeeper comes for the summer, Heron and Hollis hit it off after a rocky misunderstanding. But Hollis is keeping secrets and is anxious to hide the truth about her experience. Will Heron and Hollis gallop off into the sunset?

Heron and Hollis are a wonderful pairing! There is incredible ace, non-binary, and neurospicy representation. Ali K. Mulford always treats character’s identities with such care and intent. Hollis and Heron are so sweet together and it made me so happy to see two ace characters have a happy ending and have it be on their terms. Heron is fiercely accepted and defended by their family. (SO satisfying to see, especially when one of the trial zookeepers is not a good fit). The joyful chaos of the cast of siblings and their loved ones made me so happy! Of course, there are also a ton of cool animal facts and curious animals on the loose that are a signature of this series. I loved learning more animal facts, details about the zoo (especially with partners of previous books now joining in), and the details of new family lore.

Prickle Island Zoo is one of my favorite series and I would highly recommend it to anyone! Readers looking for ace and non-binary rep and an amazing and lovable cast of characters, (plus a love for animals!!) will enjoy this sweet installment.

Thank you so much to Ali K. Mulford for a free ARC in exchange for honest feedback.

Hollis lands her job at Prickle Island Zoo by pretending to be a bowgirl from Wyoming - even though she knows nothing about horses. Yearning for a fresh start, and maybe to hide away from the world, she doesn't expect to fall for the zookeeper, Heron Lachlan.

I always appreciate the representation that Ali includes in all her books - including her fantasy books. Until reading this, I don't think that I've read a story with ace main characters (just side characters), and I adored it! She always handles her representation with care and love for these characters.

The romance arc in this was so wholesome, delightful and with self-aware characters, it wasn't filled with miscommunication that went on for chapters. Heron and Hollis accepted each other as they are, and encouraged the best from each other (and accepted everything that goes with accepting another).

As always, there's delightful animals, family antics (and a sub-plot I didn't see coming for the Lachlan family!), neurospicy characters and beautiful representation.

Thank you again to Ali for an e-arc of Hold Your Horses, all opinions are my own!

I received this book as an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

OMG!!!!! I loved this book so freaking much!!!! Where to begin?! It was funny, it was adorable, it was SO SWOON WORTHY!!!!, It was everything I didn't know I needed right now! I haven't read many books where one or both of the main characters were Asexual, but the way the characters explained what it meant to them, how those views and feelings differed, but also how they still were able to come together without any of it feeling like a stereotype or forced into a "typical" rom com box is a testament to the author! Although this is book 5 in the series, it's the first one I read and it was so easy to fall into the story and in love with all the characters. I loved all the neurodivergent and sexuality representation in this book! I truly cannot wait to go back and read the rest of the series now! If you're looking for a fun time with a family of zoo keepers then this is the series for you!

3.5 stars rounded up

I have very much loved the Prickle Island series so far, but the fifth installment fell short for me. The characters are always the strong point. They are diverse, flawed, and lovable. Some of my favorite! And the setting of a family-owned zoo even felt stagnant. Usually there is so much life in the setting, but it just didn’t come across this time.

Unfortunately, the narrative suffered. The author relied too much on internal monologues and glossed over the plot points (that actually had promise!). We found resolution to potential conflict far too quickly and with too little explanation. There were zero stakes.

The timeline was clunky and unclear. It was really hard to have a sense of time, despite the author at times stating how long it had been. Possibly, this caused the third act breakup to fell completely contrived.

I really hope the 6th and 7th book get a little more care to finish out a series that had such a strong start!

I always love going back to Prickle Island Zoo. This time we go through Heron's journey for love, and what that looks like for them. I love that this entire family is fiercely protective of all of its members, but more importantly open and accepting of everyone. Hollis has come for an internship, but what she really wants is to just find a place where she belongs and doesn't feel broken, even if she doesn't know it yet.

When her first meeting with Heron, and subsequently their twin, goes rather poorly, she's second guessing everything. On top of needing to decline advanced from one of the other interns because she's ace and feels awkward about needing to explain herself, Hollis is off to a rocky start. Spending time with Heron isn't too bad though, and she slowly realizes they're more alike than she could have ever hoped for.

Ace 4 Ace romance??!! Yes please!!

Heron has been my favorite sibling since book one and I’m so glad we finally got their book! I loved their character development through the book and getting to see them play with their gender and come into their own.
I fell in love with Hollis as soon as she was introduced. I loved her journey of finding herself and the AuDHD was fantastic.

This book jumps 5 years in time and I think that there was a lot of setting up for future books happening that took away from the romance storyline. I think I would have felt more connected to the romance if we had seen more of them spending time together than the situations that we got including all the family.

But overall I still really enjoyed the book.

Thank you so much to Ali K. Mulford for an eARC copy of Hold Your Horses, Book 5 of the Prickle Island Zoo series!

Heron and Hollis’ story was such a sweet one!

I loved the non-binary, ace, AUDHD rep and appreciate all of the representation that Ali includes in their books! I also think people who don’t like spice in their reads will really enjoy this one as well.

I loved how Heron and Hollis accepted each other as they were and how Hollis encouraged Heron to be themselves in the best way (the Gala outfit!).

One star off because I have an issue with quick timelines but other than that it was great for me! I love seeing the Lachlan family grow and can’t wait for more! Also….Mamma Lachlan!!!!

If you’re looking for a low stakes, adorably clumsy rom com that reps LGBTQIA+ respectfully, has a focus on ace main characters, a cheeky, escapee, ostrich named Beaky and a collection of wild, chaotic, neurodivergent family members - 4 with their own stories already written and released, then Hold Your Horses is perfect for you.

Hold your Horses follows Heron and Hollie while they navigate zoo life, (scary) feelings, lies, clumsiness and boats. Lower in stakes than the previous four books, this story was not short of plot twists and has opened up so many more avenues to continue our favourite zoo families stories.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I hope you all do too! Thank you to the author for a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Heron and Hollis
They and Her
AuDHD

I love the representation in this book. I am peered reviewed AuDHD and I feel seen reading this book. I love learning more with this author. I feel like they see me and understand mee.

The explaining of the gender and sexuality makes this Gen Xer understand more.
Heron is sweet and Hollis is adorable.
This book is perfect for those who love to read books with representation of LGBTQIA+ Neurodivent and more.
This story has man twists and trurns to make you stay up till 4 am tp finish it. (I can vouch for that.)

Please have kleenex ready because Ali always has a way to make you cry even with rom-com.

3.5 ⭐️ I really enjoyed this. I am usually a smutty book enthusiast and given both MCs in this one are a sexual I wasn’t sure how much I would like it but I actually found the sexuality and neurodivergence aspects of this really interesting. I learned alot and enjoyed the deep dive into the AuDHD, asexuality, panromatic, and they/them pronouns. I think its important more authors write books like this so more people can learn like it did and make more people comfortable with or used to differences like this so more people can act appropriately when coming across these situations in real life. Romance is romance at the end of the day!

I was lucky to have been given this book as an ARC e-book by Ali and it was just as amazing as other books I've read from them. This book was actually the first one I have read from the Prickle Island Zoo series and im now going to go and read the rest of the series!
This book is a perfect little cozy rom com that as a mood reader i need to have as a part of my collection to balance out my reading. I loved the representation of neurodivergency and gender and the absolute wholesome energy the story brings across all the characters!
I can’t wait to see whats in store for the Lachlan family and the Prickle Island Zoo!

This book was incredibly sweet. I love the representation that Ali brings to their books. I don't have a lot of personal experience with ace but I feel like the characters are so authentic and well written, you're just constantly rooting for them. The connection the couple makes and the anxiety of figuring out how they're going to move through life in a "non-traditional" way was really relatable and I loved them.

I also cannot wait for Evie's story and feel like I'm going to need at least two books for her story (post haste).

Thank you so much to Ali and their team for the opportunity to review this title. I attest that I am leaving my review voluntarily and honestly

I am so grateful to have received an ARC copy of this from Ali K Mulford. I have been a loyal fan of the Prickle Island Zoo series ever since stumbling on it a couple years ago.

This was one of my favorites in the series, the characters in this book allowed for so much depth and internal reflection to be explored outside of the confines of a sexual relationship. The way AKM is able to develop such rich and impactful characters blows me away every single time. Somehow she is able to really immerse you in this family, this zoo, these characters and all of their idiosyncrasies and really just make you love them all exactly as they show up.

Herron & Hollis is such a heart warming story. Such raw beautiful understanding & acceptance from them both! Hollis finally found home, Herron found someone who sees them completely & they both found their person!

I loved the between the enclosures bamboo dance scene & Beaky always bringing them together hehe. So many swoon & snuggle with a comfy warm blanket feels (or maybe that’s just a really good hug feel). I love all the Pickle Island books especially the realistic timeline & seeing how the Lachlan’s have grown & where they are in their lives.

I have loved every single book in this series, but this might be my favorite! I've been waiting for Heron's story for 3 books now and it was everything and more!

Ace/pan x ace/pan with AuDHD rep and my favorite family surrounding them! Hollis is so relatable with what it's like in my brain (minus reptile love), and I adore Heron's casual nature. This one is so cozy and low stakes and all about finding your person. And Evie? Never saw it coming, but I love it.

The next book should be very interesting.

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read and review.
