Just Another Servant

Rate this book
Regine and Carson were best friends, but that was a long time ago. United by a past marked by terror and blood, they know that the only relationship they can have must be strictly professional. Regine is the master, Carson the butler. Simple as that.

Decades of pain and duty have kept Carson silent, suppressing his feelings even when the love of his life got married and had his first child.

Now, both have accepted their fate, and their lives focus solely on work. However, the dangers that come with being a man capable of committing the most terrible acts will make Regine suffer consequences he never anticipated. A brutal attack on his mansion, a cold slap in the face of reality, will make the master begin to see his butler with different eyes.

Will they be able to maintain the established boundaries now that things have changed?

After all, Carson has always been just another servant.

Just Another Servant, the first novel by Daniela Campos, explores a deep gay love story with explicit content that is not recommended for young readers. The plot delves into scenes of graphic violence, abuse, and mental health issues, so it is suggested to review the content warnings page before starting the reading.

You can prepare all you want, you are not ready to read this book. I think I went through all my emotions while reading this. (In a good way)

I needed some time to get into the story. This has nothing to do with how it was written though. I'm used to reading first person, dual pov kind of stories. And in all honesty I was a bit scared I wouldn't get the deeper motives of Regine and Carson while reading.

But I really got what I asked for. This book is so much more than just a romance story between two childhood friends. The longing, the flashbacks to the past, the suspense,... I loved it all!

I stupidly wrote a review then shut the app and only just realised it hadn’t published and I had lost everything 😪

Anyway make sure to check triggers as this is a bit of a heavy book, good but heavy.

I loved the time jumping. It helps to build the character in my head. But I do have to say I do prefer first person POV or duets and this was neither but it was still good.

I did like it but I wouldn’t go as far as to say I loved it. But that has nothing to do with the author or the book.

I honestly think I’ll read it again as I don’t think I gave it the attention it deserved.

This isn't my typical book. It's a m/m relationship between Regine and Carson. This is a friendship of 20 years turned into a rollercoaster of emotions. With a mix of the past and present you will feel the emotions while reading the book.

DNF- giving it a generous 3 stars because there was a point in which the story became compelling, but I couldn't finish it.

We really just can't ignore the racial implications here. I don't think it was being handled well and I don't trust the author to necessarily conclude it any better. A divide between master and servant is fine and sexy, but when the power balance involves race, we need to be aware that the story is not being told in a vacuum and it needs to be addressed. The fact that all the servants seemed to be people of color in a story set during modern-esque times pushed this just too much over the edge for me and I called it quits.

The grammar and word choice also could use a rework. Some parts were confusing, and there were too many unnecessary epithets; the author seems to have fallen for a lot of classic fanfic traps in her writing.

This book was honestly one of the hardest books to rate since a long while, because i have so many good and bad things to say about this book.

Before we dive deeper into it, i will tell you in advance, do read the trigger warnings of this book! This review is my honest review on how my experience was reading this!

Okay lets dive into the good things first, because there are good things about this book and i honestly think there is potentional in this book if the bad things were not that severe! The book is about two men, and the servant has loved his boss for 20 years! The chemistry and tension is feelable while reading, its a slow burn and it takes a while before one gives in into the other with not just body but full mind too! It was not just from one day to another but 20 years of build up tension and chemistry, certain morals and promises and views that were learned and not!

The things that really irritated me which made it not a 4 stars for me was the way this book was written. The sentence building and descriptions. The who said what, and who thought what was written very messy. Half of what i read i have no idea who said it or who thought it! Besides that it really irritated me that descriptions were used like "asked the older of the two men" and "after the blue-eyes man nodded again" it made reading it a lot more confusing

But overal the book has potential, its a good book and it would have been even better if the writing way wasn't as confusing which made it for me putting it off of the reading and made it slower to read

I really liked the presmise of this book and the characters. My only real issue I had was the POV/perspective of the book kept confusing me. I typically read 1st person and this one was different. As far as the story goes, it had a compelling love story between a tragic master of house and his ever faithful butler. I loved that this story had flashbacks so you can see them grow up together. I love friends to lovers as a trope and this fulfilled that and then some.

The story itself was very good, I liked the characters and plot, but the third person narration was sometimes hard to follow, I couldn't tell who was speaking at certain points. Also, the use of blue eyed man and other such ways of naming characters was kind of distracting. But, overall the story was intriguing and like I said, I liked the characters.

Man oh man was this an emotional roller coaster of a book! I was drawn in pretty quickly to the main characters of Carson and Regine! The balance between past and present was easy to follow and it flowed together seamlessly. The build up between the two characters is fierce and it’s like you can feel the emotions running through each word into your own body. I’m all about love is love and it doesn’t matter the gender or status of which the person is and this book is a great example of it too. It’s very well written and will keep you in your toes, that’s for certain!

Such an amazing debut! The time jumps between the past and present were super easy to follow and they flowed together well. The relationship build up between Carson and Regine is beautiful and fierce. They have been friends for over 20 years, and they don't let their hierarchy status dictate how they feel for each other.

_Just Another Servant_, the first novel by Daniela Campos, explores a deep gay love story with explicit content that is not recommended for young readers. The plot delves into scenes of graphic violence, abuse, and mental health issues, so it is suggested to review the content warnings page before starting the reading.

I suggest reading all the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book before diving in; this book is not for everyone.
The beginning was a bit slow, but once the story picked up, it kept me hooked until the end. This book has almost everything: romance, action, suspense, pain, and joy. The main characters are incredibly well-constructed. Carson is cute and adorable, sacrificing his entire life for his master and best friend without expecting anything in return. He is the reliable one, always ready to help.
Regine, on the other hand, is reserved and solitary, despised by the servants and his son, hated and feared by everyone. They are almost opposites who attract, but there is so much more to the story.
The plot is filled with silences, with the pasts of the main characters making it impossible for them to communicate their feelings, letting years pass by in unresolved tension. However, love is strong—stronger than time, hierarchy, and all the obstacles they must overcome. The ending will not disappoint you.
The author did an excellent job, especially with Regine's story. It's challenging to build a character with such a painful background, but the author handled it masterfully, especially considering this is her debut. This book is a testament to her storytelling abilities, creating complex characters and an engaging plot that resonates deeply with the reader.

What a read. Following Regine and Carson over a 20 year friendship was a rollercoaster of emotions. From an early age they were attached at the hip, starting out as childhood friends, then Master and Butler.
Carson hid his longing for Regine, showing his love by being at his beck and call anticipating his every move. Regine had always relied on Carson, but the more danger came knocking at the mansion's door, the more he looked at Carson differently.
From page 1 I was drawn into a book involving violence, corruption, control and weaved through it a beautiful intense love story. Written in 3rd person POV, there was never an issue following the story, identifying straightaway which character was being referenced and it was good to see reactions and feelings from even the secondary character like Rosa and Mario.
Throughout the story there were flashbacks of Regine and Carson at different ages, showcasing how close they were. With a story intense there are some heart breaking scenes and whilst the trigger warnings are there, there is an extra reminder midway into the story. This scenes explain a lot of what Regine had to go through and why he was the man he was and why Carson loved him fiercely. The only little niggle I had, was I wanted to know more of Samir and I would love to read his story as he was another man of mystery.
If you want an intense action filled story then grab this book and what a great debut

very controversial

In a way I sorta like this book as it is intricate and a different feel. While you have the whole master and servant thing mixed with mafia.

My only issue with the book is that there is a reason why writing these kind of books is taboo and you never see it on tv anymore. You can’t have a white MC as the master then have a black MC as a slave in a world that is kind of modernized. It just sends the wrong signs that black people are slaves and white people are at the top. Then it goes off to being this whole white savior thing that all minorities and POC seriously hate. Then the question comes in when race is played like this. Is this really what we deserve?

I honestly thought Carson deserved better than Regine. Regine literally got to live his whole life with the wife and kids but knowing Carson would always have to be there.

Just Another Servant was dark and emotional. It took me several chapters to really get into the story, but after that, I couldn't stop reading.
I'll admit that I struggled a bit with the writing; it felt detached, almost clinical at times, and the 3rd person didn't make things easier.
I enjoyed the back-and-forth between past and present, it kept adding layers to Regine and Carson's relationship and made me root for them all the more.
Regine was a complex character, and I think Daniela did a good job bringing all this complexity to life. The building dynamic between Carson and Regine was great, I was happy for them and how it ended!

Thank you so much Daniela for allowing me to read an early copy of your work!
