The names Zwyssig and Wölfli are indeed very Swiss.
"I know you've told me everything but what I need to hear, Christopher, we must focus. You must focus."
"Okay. Focus on this, Rachel. I don't want to be reinvented. Or reincarnated. Or regurgitated. I'm not going to be named Petra or Paula or Patricia or anything else."
"My God," she said wearily. "Right-o. Have it your way. You can stay a bloody male if it means so much to you."
"I am a bloody male. Of course it means that much!"
Sarcasm was wasted on her. It was like water off a Mandarin duck's back. "What about Peder?"
"Nice. I can hear it now. Peder-phile. No."
"You're being difficult, Christopher. What about Adrian?"
"God no."
"Werner? Wilhelm? Wolfgang? Stop me when you hear something you like."
"I haven't heard anything I liked since I picked up the phone." I started to laugh. "Wolfgang Wölfli. That's it. Why the hell not?"
We were not amused. Well, I was, but the Regent of Rejections was not.

My favorite book by Josh Laynon who was, quite obviously, at the top of his game! Fantabulous! As a side note: this was my 8th five-star read of the year.

Yoo-hoo! So far I’ve read twenty-two books by Josh Lanyon and it's safe to say that The Boy with the Painful Tattoo is my favorite. I also rated Fair Game and Death of a Pirate King with five stars. However, if I have to choose one book among those three then it's going to be The Boy with the Painful Tattoo. It was bloody brilliant and entertainment at its very, very finest. Honestly, I lost count how many times I had to smile or chuckle. Guess what? I have not read the two previous books in the series and I'm inclined to say that reading out of order has its merits. Although I must admit that I’m kinda tempted to check them out now.
The car interior smelled comfortingly of apple-cinnamon air freshener and John Varvatos fragrance.
I have a little something to chuckle about. Last week my little man wanted to cuddle and his curly hair smelled so incredibly good. He showed me a free sample of that fragrance and…it was Artisan Acqua by John Varvatos. I’m slightly embarrassed that I’ve never heard of that guy before.
Kit and his partner, J.X. Moriarity, author and former cop, have bought a gorgeous old house in San Francisco. Newly moved in, Kit is trying to adapt to cohabitation and comes to a crossroads. He’s been a successful mystery writer for a long time, yet he’s not sure what he wants to do in the future. Is writing still something he can invest himself with a single-mindedness and passion that’s required to hit the best-seller lists? Writing is more than a job to Kit; his words are his way of living and relating to the world. When Kit finds a dead body in his basement, a dicey yet very riveting and comedic adventure begins.
J.X. tries to fix everything. He wants to fix Kit but Kit doesn’t want to be fixed. Kit is a cranky dude and he worries a lot; his mind is always working and sometimes I just wished he would have shut down his overbearing brain in order to really let go and savor life and passion, esp. in the bedroom. I felt that the smexin’ could have been more relaxed and enjoyable if Kit had been less of a worrier and thinker. After all, you can talk the sexual tension and excitement to death. Simply put, I wanted less words and more action between the sheets.
The plot is somewhat crazy but crazy good and the eclectic cast of secondary characters is simply exquisite. Granted, some of them are a PITA but you need those too in order to make a plot more interesting. There's a quirky old lady (Yoo-hoo!), a jovial yet slimy stalker and a bunch of other interesting characters who you have to meet stat. I’m usually very good at figuring out who the culprit is. However, this time around I had to cave in. *hangs head in shame*
The Boy with the Painful Tattoo is one of those books that made my otherwise pretty crappy reading year worth my pain and misery. I don’t even need to review it extensively or in detail because it’s best to go in pretty much unprepared. Just let yourself be immersed by an intricate plot, fantastic writing, intriguing characters and witty dialogue and deadpan humor to boot. Believe me, I’m still smiling like a lunatic. I really liked Kit and J.X. as a couple very much, and even though I hadn't known them, I felt at home immediately. Although I can’t shake off a feeling that these two have still a way to go to really feel comfortable living together. Also, there remains some work to be done to strengthen their relationship. As it was, the (a bit too abrupt) ending left room for more to come, at least that’s how I saw it. Will there be a sequel? I hope so.

My life is now ruined and it's all Josh Lanyon's fault.
I mean, seriously. I've got the worst book hangover after reading this series. There's no way I'm going to be able to read anything else ever again and not compare it to Lanyon's writing. The way she draws me in with her settings and keeps me there with the smart dialogue. The twists and turns that have me spinning in circles. She builds up the story and builds it and builds it until I'm on the edge of my seat in anticipation and then she jerks the chair right out from under me and I land on the floor, stunned.
She's a mean one, that Lanyon. She likes to play with people's emotions. I can't count how many times I've teared up reading this series; this book in particular. I connect so well with Kit it's actually starting to scare me a little. The thing is, even with all the shenanigans (and there are a lot) Kit and J.X. feel so incredibly real to me. Those fears that Kit has? Well, I have a lot of those same fears. And to show that J.X. is not, in fact, perfect just brings home the amount of talent that Lanyon exudes.
Really, it's pretty careless of Lanyon to put stories like this out there without a caution or warning. I'm just supposed to rate this and move on? Really???? And it's not fair to all those other wonderful authors out there who will now have to wait for me to buy their books because I can't bring myself to read anything else right now. And God help the very next author I read cause I'm not sure I can be fair in my judgment of their writing, no matter how good they are!
I might as well go lay down in the middle of the street and wait for someone to run me over and put me out of my misery.
I'm throwing BIG side eyes at you right now, Josh. I thought we JL's were supposed to stick together.

I don't want to write a review where I give a book 4 stars and then proceed to complain about it. Usually when I write reviews I like to write 1) good stuff, 2) bad stuff and 3) good stuff again. Because ending on a positive note is nice, right? Right. Excellent.
So, even though I feel like going right to the venting--here's the good stuff.
I LOVE Kit. I love being in his head. I completely identify with his insecurities, vulnerabilities--a lot of -ties. I love his humor. I love that he finally stopped complaining about the age difference between himself and JX. See? Character development! It's an awesome thing.
I love JX. I love that it takes so little to make him happy. Just a tiny bit of effort on Kit's part and he's satisfied. However, JX? STOP GIVING CAREER ADVICE. Let Kit work it out on his own. Okay? Great. Thank you.
I love the mystery. I love how the mystery really isn't that important--what is important is how the mystery gives Kit a way to explore the issues in his own life and his and JX's issues with each other.
What I didn't like? About the last 15%. It's not that the ending is sad. It isn't. But there's a major, painful, confrontation towards the end of the book, fairly shortly followed by an honest, loving, discussion. But both the argument and the making up took place too late in the book for me. I was still feeling antsy and worried over their relationship when the book ended. The last scene of the book is very positive, but I wanted more. I wanted more proof that everything was going to work out.
But if that's what you want, you're probably reading the wrong author. Lanyon doesn't do 100% guarantees. It's well-known that Lanyon loves to save the happy feels, the happy-for-nows, until the very end. Just as our heroes unite, the book is over. I've heard from a lot of readers that this drives them crazy. Normally, I don't mind, I even like it as a lack of guarantees feels more real to me. Would I like a long chapter on how happy the two MCs are with each other? Yes. But it's not Lanyon's style and 99% of the time I'm good with that. But not with this book. It keeps gnawing away at my brain. I'm confident that Kit and JX want to work out their issues but for the first time in this series I'm truly worried that won't happen. I know it will happen, because romance novel, but still--I'm worried.
Maybe it's just my mood? I'm really enjoying the sugar/fluff nugget books lately and those books are under a contractual obligation to end happily ever after. It'll be interesting to see what I think in a different state of mind.
Anyway! Back to the good stuff. Mixed feelings or not this book was well-worth the FOUR YEAR WAIT. And I will happily wait another four years for book #4. Okay, maybe not happily. I'll probably mope and complain constantly. But I will be monumentally happy when it appears on my Kindle.

After reading this one over a couple of days (BR with Sofia and Andrea), enjoying every single page, is this happy, warm and fuzzy feeling all around me. This is just so very good romance reading in this M/M crime genre.
Another 'Good One' in a favorite Lanyon series!
The Boy with the Painful Tattoo is the third installment in the Holmes & Moriarity series. An M/M light-crime series in the oldish whodunit style. I listened on the audiobooks for both #1 - Somebody Killed His Editor (4.5) and #2 - All She Wrote (4.3). Both great narrated and recommended for listening.

Two household shall be one in a newly bought classy and swanky 100 year old villa in a pleasant residential San Francisco area. Nonetheless, there is a corpse in the basement already day two.
Another murder whodunit case that must be resolved by these two crime writers.
Kit is home alone with all unpacked moving boxes while JX is at an writers' conference in Las Vegas. One suspicious visitor after another pops up. An undressed tattooed young man sneaks around in the garden and a reader-admirer is particularly intensive. Kit doesn't know what to think.
In the same time wants his publisher, the caring but always nagging, Rachel, that he Kit (..with Swiss !!!! ancestry from grandma) should focus on trying to write a mystery novel in the new and popular Scandinavian crime fiction style.
Kit and Rachel's crazy cute bickering and phone calls, were so funny. ~ I smiled and chuckled of course. Recognizing most of these mentioned writers and their novels, as an old fan and reader of that genre, and naturally as a very proud Scandinavian.

I came to adore Christopher Kit Holmes already in the first book. He is by now high up on my Favorite Gay-Guy Top 10 list.
Kit Holmes is a quite old-fashioned mystery writer (as a young woman says: “...about the old lady gardener and her cat..”), now on his way down from the bestselling list. A nearly 40 years old gay who is quick witted, quite charming, needy and with good self-awareness. He isn't always a nice and lovely character, but always amusing sour and cute.
Kit's younger lover, J.X (Julian Xavier) Moriarity is in many ways the opposite. He's a manly sexy, gorgeous hunk. These two met again inte first book - after a short love affair an intense weekend years ago. Then was J.X a young cop, nowadays a bestselling 35 years old novelist.

When a comfortable, lazy and whiny cute gay sugar-delicacy, as Kit, becomes a amsteur sleuth then it becomes magnificent. Kit is wonderful in these suspense parts.
Nevertheless, Kit and his MAN J.X. are amazing to follow in both their turbulent emotional hot meetings but also in their everyday normal life. ~ It isn't that easy to start a new life in a new house with a new man, even if you love him most in the world.
Their dialogue, both the inner monologue and Kit's touchy banters with JX, are well written and I just want more time with them. Kit makes me smile or chuckle at least once for each book page.
# I don't know that much about the city San Francisco but I'm sure I should like it more than Kit does (yet). (It looks stunning beautiful and is on my 'vacation-wish-list')
# I maybe didn't care that much about the crime plot this time (even if there was an old Swedish coin to be find). It wasn't bad but kind of predictable and somewhat too "easy".
# A bonus: Their visit to Cloak and Dagger Books in Los Angeles and the dinner with xxx. Guess, and read yourself. (Howevere, those scenes was kind of 'big'. Got a happy starstrucker feeling.)
# The rumor is that there will be 5 books. (Let it be soon!)

I came to adore Christopher Kit Holmes already in the first book. He is by now high up on my Favorite Gay-Guy Top 10 list.
Kit Holmes is a quite old-fashioned mystery writer (as a young woman says: “...about the old lady gardener and her cat..”), now on his way down from the bestselling list. A nearly 40 years old gay who is quick witted, quite charming, needy and with good self-awareness. He isn't always a nice and lovely character, but always amusing sour and cute.

When a comfortable, lazy and whiny cute gay sugar-delicacy, as Kit, becomes a amsteur sleuth then it becomes magnificent. Kit is wonderful in these suspense parts.
Nevertheless, Kit and his MAN J.X. are amazing to follow in both their turbulent emotional hot meetings but also in their everyday normal life. ~ It isn't that easy to start a new life in a new house with a new man, even if you love him most in the world.
Their dialogue, both the inner monologue and Kit's touchy banters with JX, are well written and I just want more time with them. Kit makes me smile or chuckle at least once for each book page.
# I don't know that much about the city San Francisco but I'm sure I should like it more than Kit does (yet). (It looks stunning beautiful and is on my 'vacation-wish-list')
# I maybe didn't care that much about the crime plot this time (even if there was an old Swedish coin to be find). It wasn't bad but kind of predictable and somewhat too "easy".
# A bonus: Their visit to Cloak and Dagger Books in Los Angeles and the dinner with xxx. Guess, and read yourself. (Howevere, those scenes was kind of 'big'. Got a happy starstrucker feeling.)
# The rumor is that there will be 5 books. (Let it be soon!)

I almost forgot that this story - apart from also being the most relationship-oriented in this series - is the funniest of all three books. I just love Kit Holmes's dry and sarcastic sense of humor and the audiobook made it even better. Oh, and I loved that Kevin R. Free gave J.X. a more distinctive voice this time. ❤️
Now I'm more than ready for In Other Words...Murder, so... next one please! :)

I think this one is on me.
I have super duper mixed feelings about Josh Lanyon and this series, and I know I'm always harsh on Lanyon, but this book annoyed the crap out of me.
Kit was a prissy, annoying shrew, and he grated on me in every scene. JX was a saint for putting up with him. Also, who doesn't know how to use a cellphone in 2014 (when the book was written)? Why was Kit so befuddled by technology? He was like an old lady. He was also incredibly TSTL. Like, was he trying to get himself murdered?
The mystery was fine, and the audiobook narration was very good (by the always reliable Kevin R Free), but the relationship didn't work for me.
I know I'm in the minority, but I'm used to that with Lanyon. I'm done with this series.

The release of this book has been pushed back several times that I almost lost all hope for publication. But then it had pre-order button and I couldn't contain my glee. What could I say, I enjoyed Kit Holmes's adventure.
Sure, it was NOT flawless, and let me listed down some issues that I had with it. First of all, Kit did annoy me a couple of times with him being indecisive and a bit control freak and refused to ask for help or to talk to J.X. about what was going on in his mind. Not to mention his stubbornness led to a very TSTL moment, which when it came to mystery story, just made me want to knock the character on the head.
Then the mystery ... OMG, what the heck was that?!? The story started REALLY good and intriguing with Kit finding the dead body (in exchanged for his china) on his basement. THAT was a GREAT set-up for solving the murder-mystery people!! But then it went on to some coin robberies and dysfunctional family ... and PLEASE, if Beck Ladas was as stupid and dim-witted as people said he was, why was it so hard for the cops to catch him?!? How come he could easily tracked down Kit (always when he was alone!) when he didn't even seem to have a car? I mean, that would actually make Beck SMARTER than any of them (including cops!).
The stalker case was too black-and-white as well. I sensed that "Misery-Kathy-Bates" vibe million miles away ... and it only added the TSTL moment to Kit's action.
I also didn't understand the sudden bottom/passive/submissive plot. WHY it was needed to be there in the first place? Why the need for this? Was it because Kit just found out suddenly that he was actually like being a bottom? BUT AGAIN, WHY?!? We are doing FINE without it ever being part of the relationship problem. I just felt like it was added as potential issue for Kit and J.X. ... like they didn't have enough problem in the first place.
And, I needed to say this *cringe* the Adrien/Jake cameo was a bit pointless...
HOWEVER
For the most part, I JUST LOVED this book. Despite my issues, I thought Kit was entertaining. I LOVED Kit because he was so prickly and grumpy!! I felt that he was sort of built that way, imbued by his non-so-good relationship with David. Plus he was older than J.X. (and Josh's main narrator was usually younger or on par in age with the love interest) so maybe he also had that lack of confidence ... which resulted also in his dry humor, and it was great to read.
I loved that J.X was being both exasperated and understanding about Kit's grumpiness. They were GREAT together and I loved reading about them!
As for Adrien/Jake thing, despite it being pointless, I am a HUGE FAN of them. They're like my all time OTP when it comes to MM. So I will take SCRAPS of anything Adrien/Jake that Josh throw at me ...
I had fun and I was satisfied. That's all that matters.
So are we having book 4 or what?

Seriously though. I recently listened to the first two books in the series in audiobook format, and I really enjoyed them. It seems to me that the 4 year gap between when the previous book, All She Wrote, was published and 'The Boy with the Painful Tattoo' really effected the way Josh Lanyon wrote Kit. In the first two books in the series, Kit has insecurities and he often deals with them in slightly immature ways. But he wasn't so irritating and petty. I didn't enjoy the way that Kit is written in this book; he isn't likeable at all.
However, this book was still enjoyable. The mystery was as entertaining as those in the previous books, and will keep you on the edge of your seat. There's a large cast of interesting secondary characters. It seems that one in particular, Emmaline, will be in the next book as well, which I'm looking forward too. And that new alpha-top thing J.X. has going on? That was hot.
Did I mention that I love J.X.? Because I do. He's awesome.
Overall, this is an enjoyable addition to the series. If it hadn't been for my dislike of Kit, this would have been 4 stars. But even so, I can't wait to read the next book in the series, and I'm hoping I like Kit better then. Hopefully Josh Lanyon won't take another four years to release the next book!

JOSH LANYON:
I have stated many, many, many times before that Josh Lanyon is my favorite M/M mystery writer. He knows the perfect recipe for a great mystery that includes great humor and fantastic characters. I LOVE HIS BOOKS! I devour everyone one of them I get. I can't get enough of his writing and I absolutely love this series. Kit is my second favorite character of his coming right after the impeccable, Adrien English. The Adrien English series is my favorite and then it's this series fallowed by the All's Fair series. I just really enjoy all of those characters and I can't wait to see what is next. I keep hoping for more Adrien, but I don't know if that is a possibility. One can hope though. I need another book in this series though. I love Kit and J.X. and I wanna see more growth in their relationship. Things are just starting to get good!

Kit and J.X. are finally shacking up together! Yay!
On their first weekend in their new house, J.X. goes to Vegas for a book convention, leaving Kit alone to begin the daunting task of unpacking and organising their new home. Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly, because it's 'bad things magnet' Kit), he stumbles upon a random dead body stuffed into one of his shipping creates....and from here, the crazy, fun, over-the-top, whodunit mystery begins.
I enjoy whodunit murder-mysteries, and Lanyon is fast becoming a favourite go-to author in that department. It helps that I think she's a stellar writer, who knows how to craft a truly original and entertaining mystery plot. Plus, her characters are deliciously fleshed-out and real, which makes everything all the more juicy.
Over the course of the last three stories, I've truly come to care for J.X. and Kit. Kit is self-centred and stubborn, often acting out in what I can only describe as a self-destructive manner. He says harsh shit to J.X. that makes me want to throw things at his head, but somehow - probably due to Lanyon's brilliant skills - he still comes across as relatable, and ultimately, lovable. It helps that he makes me laugh non-stop; seriously, his witticism is phenomenal.
I love the relationship dynamic between Kit and J.X., too. It's so honest and raw, and sometimes brutal, but that just makes the tender moments all the more perfect. There is no easy HEA reached here (more a HFN, which I was fine with). They clearly have to work for it and will continue to do so from here on out, but that's half the fun of reading along.

This third installment of Holmes & Moriarity, is, so far, the best to me! I loved the others, mostly the mysteries. But in this one, what I love most was the development of their relationship! Kit and J.X., are living together now, and in spite of Kit's crankiness, he is realizing how much he loves J.X., how much he needs his lover! J.X. is perfect for Kit: he loves him, he is so patient and never gives up on Kit.
I also must say that sex is hotter in this book!
I don't know if there will be more books in this series, but I sincerely hope so! I would like to see Kit and J.X. really happy!

If you haven’t read Josh Lanyon’s Holmes & Moriarity series yet, I wholeheartedly recommend it because this series is quickly becoming as fiercely successful and passionately loved as Lanyon’s Adrien English books are. I had such feverish, high expectations for the much awaited third book, and the author didn’t let me down, not one bit. The story was everything I hoped for — only much better. And with some wild, awesome surprises!
The Holmes & Moriarity book 3 is full of wonderful details that make you laugh out loud and others that make you ponder. There are pages that squeeze your heart like nothing else and others that are so sexy they leave you with burning cheeks and out of breath. Overall the joy of writing this story comes across so clearly that reading the book is like spending a day with the author at an amusement park and not riding only the roller coaster, but visiting also everything from Fun House to Haunted Mansion!
In The Boy with the Painful Tattoo Christopher ’Kit’ Holmes is, against his better instincts, making a huge leap and setting up house together with J.X. Moriarity. Their budding relationship is put to the test when, once again, Kit turns out to be a murder magnet. With Kit's unstoppable, crazy inner monologue Josh Lanyon creates fantastic rhythm and tone for the story. I'm in awe of Lanyon’s timing and the way he takes us for a ride where the hilariously funny lines interlock with the more serious aspects of the story so seamlessly.
I wasn’t able to solve the mystery by myself, but that didn’t make the book any less enjoyable for me. I’m afraid my focus was on the relationship of these two intriguing men and I couldn’t stop admiring how Kit, even while being completely out of his comfort zone, still bravely forces on and tackles all the relationship problems and other equally uncomfortable situations, one by one. He does this all by following his slightly twisted, unique logic that is spiced up with his sarcastic way of seeing the world and himself in it. And as they say — that makes all the difference.
I also have to thank the author for all wonderful nuances, small gestures, facial expressions and tones of voice which Kit notices so sharp-eyed in every turn. I especially love how he takes mental notes of J.X.'s every reaction. And I don't care one bit that these people aren't actually real — I adore to see how much they both want their relationship to work. How J.X. is trying to give Kit space and time to be... well, Kit... and how Kit is making those scary leaps he probably wouldn't make for anyone else. Josh Lanyon writes his characters so very tangible and real, so... dear.
There were numerous beautiful scenes in which the main couple revealed their vulnerable, bare feelings, and also several touching, powerful, earthmoving sex scenes. I can’t help but to feel complete satisfaction after reading it all. The story left me smiling and I, once again, have to state that Josh Lanyon writes the perfect endings. This one was delightful and it certainly gives hope for some truly fun times in the future!
This book will be a wonderful re-read. I'll enjoy re-visiting that beautiful house and garden, and re-hearing the "Yoo-hoo! Yoo-hoo!" behind that hedge. I can’t wait to re-read all the brilliant phone conversations and to gape at Jerry’s creepy character. I want to witness Kit and J.X. spending time with Adrien and Jake again, and I want to listen to Jack Johnson's "You and Your Heart" while re-reading. I want Josh Lanyon to make my heart curl into a tight ice-cold ball and then I want him to make it all better again. Because he can.

AUDIOBOOK - SERIES REVIEW
“Somebody Killed His Editor” – 3 stars
“All She Wrote” – 3 stars
“The Boy With the Painful Tattoo” – 3.5 stars
Ok…so…I really really did not like this audiobook set. Which seems crazy since I listened to the whole thing back to back and didn’t even once think of stopping.
I think my loyalty to getting through a beloved Josh Lanyon series overpowered my complete irritation with this narrator. And thus I persisted. But, ultimately, I think it was the narration that may have ruined the series for me.
Kevin R. Free has the kind of voice that sounds…well…perpetually stuffy-nosed. And I don’t mean that to be cruel, it just was something I couldn’t get out of my head. He has a limited number of accents for characters, so when listening to the books back to back, it felt like all the same characters were returning in each book. And in those accents, he often time lost them by the end of the sentence. So you’d hear this old-british-lady accent for 2/3 of the sentence and by the end it was the same voice he was using for Kit, the main character.
Oh, and the sex…so so awkward. I had just been getting used to listening to sex scenes in audiobooks. And this knocked me back 12 steps. It was so…over the top and felt comical. I cringed.
Now, about the stories…
Well, to summarize this series, my main struggle was…I just did NOT like Christoper Holmes (Kit), the main character, the 1st person POV. He’s whiney, selfish, impossible to love, even more impossible to like, lazy, meddlesome, weak…and I honestly did not believe the attraction or relationship between Kit and JX…until possibly the last half of the last book. I kept screaming at my phone “leave his ass, JX!”
I also think mystery is harder to follow in audiobook. You don’t have the luxury of missing any details. And I found myself rewinding a lot because I had, well, missed details.
All in all, this was a disappointment to me, to be honest. I was so hoping for more.

Poor Kit. He just cannot catch a break - a break from finding dead bodies, that is. He and JX have made that ultimate relationship step and have newly moved in together, but a murdered victim found in one of their packing crates is not a great way to start their new life together.
As with this particular series, Kit is ever the neurotic fussy guy, full of insecurities and a tendency toward introversion, all of it marked with sarcastic humor and a fatalistic attitude that lends itself to some very entertaining moments. Though I would've preferred to have more on page JX time, it is actually their relationship that takes center stage this time, in and around the murder shenanigans. Despite their best efforts, these two are still on shaky ground due to Kit’s fears. Always interesting, smart, and full of that wry and sardonic wit that can be so prominent in a lot of Lanyon’s works, I often found myself suddenly snorting or bursting out in laughter. This was good reading, as yet again, Kit solves the murder whether he wants to or not. He’s quite the unconventional hero, but there’s definitely something there that makes you want to be in on the inside jokes with him; his “brilliant criminal mind” notwithstanding. This series is never overt in the smex, but what little we got quite satisfies (though I will never turn down more), and delved deeper into the romantic and intimate, vulnerable dynamic between these two complete opposites. Luckily we get another entry to this great series, and I’m definitely looking forward to it!
Poor Kit. He just cannot catch a break - a break from finding dead bodies, that is. He and JX have made that ultimate relationship step and have newly moved in together, but a murdered victim found in one of their packing crates is not a great way to start their new life together.
As with this particular series, Kit is ever the neurotic fussy guy, full of insecurities and a tendency toward introversion, all of it marked with sarcastic humor and a fatalistic attitude that lends itself to some very entertaining moments. Though I would've preferred to have more on page JX time, it is actually their relationship that takes center stage this time, in and around the murder shenanigans. Despite their best efforts, these two are still on shaky ground due to Kit’s fears. Having sold his home in LA, Kit Holmes has finally taken the plunge and moved to San Francisco to be near lover JX Moriarity. Nevertheless, even with this commitment, he's still his old insecure self where JX is concerned. Soon, however, he has something other than his doubts to worry about as, while JX is away at a writer's conference, he discovers a body packed in a box that should be holding his china. More surprises in store...the detective coming to investigate is JX's old partner at the SFPD who informs Kit that the dead man is a fairly famous burglar involved in a recent heist. So who killed him and why? Kit isn't going to get involved but the victim, very rich and accustomed to getting his own way, decides otherwise. He "hires" Kit to solve the crime and the word "no" doesn't enter into it.
Kit soon has other problems as he acquires a stalker, a fan who likewise doesn't know the meaning of the negative, and is also a little perturbed by JX's existence...
Like the satire of the slasher movie, where the audience shouts "Don't go into the cellar," readers will echo this admonition as Kit tells himself not to get involved, not to let that adoring fan into the house, and not to do quite a number of things before he does them. I have sort of mixed feelings about this book, but overall, quite favorable.
What I liked:
Kit being his usual, cranky-bastard self. I don't really like him, but somehow I love him. He's a very true, very real character, and as agonizing as that can be at times, I genuinely appreciate how real he is, even when he makes me cringe. I admire how, in a genre rife with Gary Stu characters, Josh continues to write amazingly vulnerable, flawed MCs. He reminds us again and and again that flawed characters are NOT flawed writing. (Thank you, Josh, a million times for that)
The relationship between Kit and J.X.--I love watching these guys find their way as a couple. I love quite a bit about J.X., and I love how he manages to love Kit in spite of his faults. At times, I got fed up with J.X.'s whole "I know what's best for you" routine, because it was a little too close to "chest-beating alphahole" for my taste, but again, flawed characters are NOT flawed writing, and Lanyon writes them really well.
As far as the mystery part of the story goes, I did not find that as satisfying as the relationship portion of the story. This is pretty much par for the course with me, I'm just not the target audience for mysteries. I much prefer Lanyon's romances to his mysteries, and that's probably never going to change.
Overall, a very nice continuation of the H&M series, and I really hope to read more of my favorite crankypants Kit in the future.

It's Holmes, it's Moriarity, it's murder, mayhem and just generally Josh Lanyon at his best. I loved this book.
It's moving day, Kit and J.X. are combining their lives and making a go of things. J.X. has a conference to go to leaving Kit to his own devices for a few days. What could possibly go wrong? Pretty much everything. Starting with a dead body in the basement.
Kit writes murder mysteries he doesn't commit them or play amateur sleuth or so he says. J.X. has his hands full trying to maintain a successful writing career of his own and keep Kit safe from the trouble he just seems to naturally attract.
The relationship between these two men is at once endearing and entertaining to watch as they struggle to build something lasting together and still maintain their individuality. Kit is to say the least a hot mess of conflicting emotions but deep down inside he knows he loves J.X. and J.X. has known he loves Kit from the first time they met 10 years earlier at a convention.
I absolutely devoured this book and loved every minute of it. it simply hit all the right buttons for me. I was invited by Ingela to join their buddy read and I did pop in for a comment or two, but then I opened the book and continued reading and what can I say except...game over. I am done and now hoping that there are plans for more.

I was able to borrow this book. I have been looking forward to reading this one for a while, and when I heard Jake and Adrien play a cameo I knew I had to read this one to check in with them. (book challenge starts Monday!! <3 )
I liked catching up with J.X. and Kit - I like them as a couple, Kit gets on my nerves (a lot) with his sabotaging of the relationship, but I can understand where it comes from. Just wish he could let it go now, you know?
I KNEW Jerry was a bad guy right from the start. Please, his biggest fan shows up at his house, with a basket of food and stuff? I would NOT have eaten any of it for fear of poisoning (stalkers are crazy you know), but Kit was fine after so crazy stalker was still in awe of his idle at this point. But, crazy stalker. I don't think I need to say more.
As for the crime to be solved, the body in the moving crate, it was kind of far fetched, but I enjoyed the drama anyway. I wanted to know how it all happened, and it was unique, that's for sure. What was really hilarious is how everyone wanted Kit to help them find the missing coins, and Kit is all like, "nope, not a detective, just a writer; nope, not your guy, let the police handle it." He said this so many times and yet they wouldn't stop! Frankly, since his manager(?), editor, forget what her job is exactly, but she would hound him for another story, new and hip and currently on trend. To get her off his back, Kit should have told her he was writing a story about the events taking place in his life (he just shouldn't have told her it was really happening to him, let her think he made it up. I would have LOVED to have heard her tell him, "nobody will believe that; they won't buy a story so ridiculous." I can just see his face when she tells him that; and he's living it!! It didn't happen that way though, such a shame.) In the end, he does solve the murder and the case of the missing coins, which was expected.
What I wasn't satisfied with was the ending. Kit and JX had been fighting and then they talked, but I didn't get closure for me. They came across as fine, but I thought more needed to be done to really cement for me that they were good. They said their "I love you's" but I wanted some cuddles and kisses late at night after some lovemaking, not a day at the zoo with JX's nephew.
Since I hear there are going to be more books written I guess I can live with this one ending this way, but if the last book in the series doesn't end with some serious cuddle/kissing/lovemaking closure, I quit! Not really, just in case the books Gods are listening. :)
I had fun reading it, which is all the matters.

JX: Who in their right mind doesn’t love him? Hell if I know but I am one of his devoted fans. Even though he’s not perfect I’ll cut him a lot of slack for having to deal with his choice in life partner.
I’ll just come right out and say “IT” – What exactly is it about Kit that makes JX love him/care for him/ want him the way he does? Cause...I don’t get it 80% of the time. (My little romantic heart didn’t get it that is. Cause I’m just wired that way of course – LOL)
Kit: By reading the above mentioned you probably deduce that I don’t have much time for said character. Well...You would be WRONG in that assumption.
I do like Kit. I love him in his own crazy way actually. I just don’t think he is what JX needs emotionally. Intellectually .... YES! They are a very interesting match that I greatly enjoyed.
Kit is one incredibly interesting character. I swear his internal dialog is brilliant and I just loved the way he is SO NOT your average “Man of Steel”. Kit has flaws, a whole bunch of them actually and though we all have flaws by the dozen his particular “self centred” issues make me wonder about the match he has with JX.
Kit is very guarded in the emotional department. I get that and it’s why I still love him, even though he is the way he is. He made me laugh so hard!
I enjoyed the “mystery” aspect and the crazy stalker thing gave me so much empathy for the poor authors out there that has to deal with these kind of things in real life. May I never lose my marbles in that manner. LOL
I finished this one in much less time than the other ones because I just wanted more and I wasn’t disappointed. I LOVED the romance and the relationship parts we got in this. There were the sweetest and most vulnerable moments and it just made me love JX all the more.

Somebody Killed His Editor was the first Lanyon book I had read and I was instantly hooked. Now, I do not know how many Lanyon books later, I got to thinking about what I like about Lanyon’s writing. Apart from his writing style, I also love his people, I may not always like them but I love how he writes them. I like the relationship dynamics he creates. And I absolutely admire how he is able to use the same tropes over and over again and make them new in each book.
I had long been awaiting for some more Kit and J.X. and yes with this I did get me some more. Kit is Kit, whiny, scared, doubtful, witty, funny, clever Kit. And J.X. I see from Kit’s eyes and he conveys a good eyeful. We know have the push and pull of J.X. and Kit living together. Every relationship requires compromises and we see this at work here, the push and pull of everyday living with someone.
The crime section of the story was predictable, no intricate plot twisting or surprises. On the whole I enjoyed this more as a keeping up to date with what’s happening with Kit and J.X. which I did. Plus getting a dose of Kit's social commentary on such current topics as twitter (including a twittcott - with is a twitter boycott), Scandinavian crime thrillers, fans and reviews.
I have no idea whether there will be further books in this series, but I would read more for sure.

I really enjoyed Kit and JX in this story especially now their relationship is on a firmer footing.The mystery itself was puzzling with some very entertaining characters and lots of possibilities, but none of them easy to guess. I like mysteries that keep the reader guessing but also entertain them along the way and this story delivers on both counts.
I also really enjoyed the 'guest' appearances and the way in which they were woven into the story. Best of all is the snarky but humorous way Kit looks at his career, his life and this growing love, as well as the publishing industry, stalkers, neighbours and family.
I think the humour was really well done. Although Kit has to deal with moving, back problems, doubts and love, he manages to work his way through everything by having a very self-deprecating and honest internal commentary on his own life and the situations he finds himself in, from staying in a seedy hotel to being chased by a hoodlum, to rescuing his china set.
All of this is accompanied by his funny remarks which try to hide his doubts and fears.
Every element of this story comes together in one delicious whole.

I can't really put my finger on what it is but I struggle hard with this series. And I love almost everything else I've read from JL. In this book I was a bit annoyed with JX for a change as it almost always Kit grating on my patience otherwise... The narrator is really good though!

A wonderful addition to the series. I loved that Kit is starting to push himself a bit as far as the relationship with J.X. goes. He recognizes his sometimes irrational reasoning and is actually trying, although not always successfully. J.X. is the perfect, laid back foil to Kit's prickly, grumpiness.
As usual, whenever life gets a bit comfortable for Kit a dead body shows up to add some excitement. Add in Kit's "biggest fan", J.X.'s extended family, a new house in a new city and Kit's growing disenchantment with life as a writer and there was more than enough to keep me entertained and hoping for some more books in the future..

4.5 stars! I love Kit and J.X. and love how their relationship has grown. Spending time with Kit's snark and J.X.'s sweetness and care of Kit was just what I needed.
The narration for this series couldn't be more perfect. Kevin R. Free nails Kit's personality every time and J.X. comes across just as clearly as Kit. I genuinely look forward to the next one!

Book 3 in the Holmes & Moriarity saga, The Boy with the Painful Tattoo, has now arrived to the delight of Josh Lanyon fans everywhere. When this third installment in Josh’s contemporary mystery comedy series opens, Kit and J.X. have just started living together and have moved into a newly purchased house in San Francisco. First up though, J.X. is off to a mystery fiction convention in Las Vegas while Kit remains at their home to deal with the myriad details of getting everything organized. What ensues is IMO the funniest book Mr. Lanyon has ever written, while still giving his devoted mystery readers a healthy dose of what they have come to expect from the master of the whodunit.
Never one to discuss plot points – I feel each reader needs to discover the story for themselves - I do however want to comment on several elements that drew me in and held me in its grip, page after page. First, Josh’s riotous sense of humor was ever-present and spot on from beginning to end. I laughed so hard and so often I felt at times I was near convulsing. Second, the new house was an important character in its own right in this tale, and Josh’s illuminating descriptions, both inside and out, were truly breathtaking. I so wanted to take up residence there! Third, Kit’s and J.X.’s relationship evolved throughout this work in ways that are rarely seen in series writing once MC’s have established their close connection. Included in this beautifully-realized dynamic (and Mr. Lanyon truly outdid himself here) were original, thoughtful, passionate sex scenes designed to highlight formerly unexplored aspects of their personalities. And lastly, as an added treat for many of us, Kit & J.X. spent time at Cloak and Dagger Books with everyone’s favorite couple. All this, combined with an engrossing, well-crafted mystery filled with murder and mayhem in the JL tradition, made for a perfect reading experience.
