The bestselling CatStronauts series continues in the seventh book when a not-so-pawesome space trash emergency means a special cat will have to step in to save the day!
It’s family day at CATSUP HQ, and Major Meowser is waiting for his dad-cat to make a BIG entrance. Anycat who’s anycat knows who Buck Meowser is—the first cat to ever orbit Earth. He’s a CatStronauts legend! Major's in for quite a shock, though, when CATSUP announces Buck is making a grand return, this time joining the CatStronauts on their mission to remove space junk from Earth’s orbit. Perfect time for father-son bonding, right?
Well...Major and Buck can’t stop ruffling each other’s fur! But when the safety of their spacecraft is threatened, can these two put their paws together to make this mission a success?
Author-illustrator Drew Brockington tests the CatStronauts with everything he’s got—space litter, environmental peril, and of course, pawesome puns!

The CatStronauts are on a new mission to the international space station. Launches are getting tougher because of all the space debris up there from their past missions. In fact, the clutter is part of the reason they are going to the space station, to set up a shield to help protect it. Waffles is based at mission control for this mission and Major’s dad-cat is going instead. Dad-cat was a big deal in the old days of CATSUP but things have changed a lot since then, and he isn’t used to his son telling him what to do. Can the two of them work well together? And when disaster strikes on the space station and they need a rescue quick, what will CATSUP do when no shuttles are available?
This volume of the CatStronauts has a theme of communicating better with family, and also bringing awareness to the problem of space junk and why reusable rockets could be such a great idea. I like the encouragement to communicate better. Especially in the era of cell phones, we’ve gotten worse at talking to our loved ones, ironically. This book also answers the question of what happened to Pancake for those who have read the Waffle & Pancake adventures for lower grade readers.
Notes on content: Language: None Sexual content: None Violence: Some accidents are potentially life-threatening but everything works out ok. Ethnic diversity: The CatStronauts are from the US, they have friends in Russia, and other countries they contact about shuttles. LGBTQ+ content: None specified. There’s one illustration in which it kind of appears that one of the CatStronauts has 2 dad-cats, but it isn’t clear. Other: The CATSUP leader has to get over a grudge with someone to help get the team back to Earth safely. Cats on Earth are protesting the cluttering of space with junk from CATSUP missions, and the CATSUP leader seems unconcerned at first.
My kids (5 & 8) and I really love the CatStronauts series so we were so excited to get approved for ARC of this new installment. As always, this one was a hit with the kids. They love the action, the cute cats, the bright colors, the silliness, and the overall message about friendship and families.
From my perspective as a parent, it was a cute story with a lot of good messaging about family dynamics and conflict resolution. Some parts probably went over the kids' heads, but for the most part we really liked this one. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!
My son loved the original books in this series many years ago, so I was excited to see another one was coming out. I was disappointed by several instances of "replacement cursing" where they were clearly trying to make puns in curse form. This is just not what children's literature needs; all it does is encourage kids to do it themselves.
I was given an ARC to read through NetGalley. My opinions are entirely my own.
I love cats. I love puns. I love a good cat-themed pun. This hit all those marks well!
CatStronauts: Cosmic Clutter was a fun little romp with a good message. I appreciated how it pointed out the importance of relationships, sustainable enterprising, and trusting in yourself while making me giggle at the same time. As a parent, I can't wait to share this one with my 8 year old!
Thanks to NetGalley and Little Brown Books for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Major Meowser and friends are set to go into space to clear up space trash that their missions have been leaving behind on their missions. But when Major's dad, veteran CatStronaut, Buck, joins the mission, Major isn't really happy about. It turns out that Major and Buck (his dad) butt heads a lot. Can Major hold it together? Can dad cat, Buck, see his son as the captain in charge? Will their bickering thwart their return to earth?
Our entire family loves these books, and we were all SO excited to have a new one out! This one answered almost all of my questions in such a delightful way, and also included my two sons’ favorite spittoo of the whole series. Well worth the wait! I very much hope there will be another one some day (I still need closure on Ava’s story)!
This engaging graphic novel is a lot of fun for space loving young readers. The illustrations are wonderful and compliment the story. Thanks to Net Galley for letting me read and review.
