“Nu tried to fix her gaze beyond the water, beyond this realm, beyond everything. She was no longer looking at what was in front of her. She gazed into the universe itself, searching for that feeling she knew all too well. That knowing she should never have doubted, even for a second.”
This follow up had me right back in my feelings in the best way. I loved The Great Library of Tomorrow, and somehow this one matched that same magic, maybe even sharpened it. The same charm, the same imagination, the same “okay I’ll read one more chapter and suddenly it’s midnight” energy.
Nu really shines this time around. There’s this perfect mix of vulnerability and strength in her arc, and I loved watching her step deeper into who she’s meant to be. The nightmares, the shifting alliances, the little hints that something bigger is simmering under the surface, it all kept me hooked. And having the old crew pop back in with new secrets and even bigger problems? Loved every bit of it.
The world building expands in such a smooth way. You feel the pull of the realms, the weight of the history, and the thrill of the unknown without it ever getting bogged down. Plus, those darker moments hit harder than I expected, which only made the bright spots feel even more rewarding.
Overall, it’s just a genuinely satisfying sequel, fun, emotional, adventurous, and filled with the kind of character moments that make you smile. I enjoyed this just as much as the first, and now I’m impatient for book three to land in my hands already!

Een wrede gebeurtenis zet alles op scherp. De terugkeer van een oude vriend onthult het bestaan van een geheimzinnig reliek dat rechtstreeks verbonden is met het Boek der Wijsheid. Mijn ervaring:
Subliem! Wat een tof, meeslepend en indrukwekkend vervolg van deze magische serie. The Sky of Sacrifice is opnieuw een echte pageturner die je van de eerste tot de laatste bladzijde in zijn greep houdt. Rosalia Aguilar Solace schrijft met een levendige, filmische stijl die de wereld van de Grote Bibliotheek, de portalen tussen de rijken en de vele magische wezens tot leven wekt alsof je er zelf middenin staat.
De personages voelen inmiddels vertrouwd aan, maar in dit tweede deel krijgen ze opvallend veel meer diepgang. Vooral Nu, Robin en Rosa maken een krachtige ontwikkeling door. Rosalia Aguilar Solacelaat mooi zien hoe zij, en ook de rest van de Wijzen, veranderen onder druk van de keuzes die ze moeten maken. Door het alwetend perspectief wissel je tussen verschillende gezichtspunten, wat zorgt voor een goed tempo en een breed beeld van wat er allemaal op het spel staat.
Het verhaal begint kalm, bijna vredig, maar al snel wordt duidelijk dat de rust bedrieglijk is. Nu’s visioenen vormen het startschot van een nieuwe dreiging: Edwin Payne en Suttaru zijn bezig met een duister plan dat de Grote Bibliotheek ten onder kan doen gaan. De toevoeging van fragmenten uit Suttaru’s dagboek maakt het verhaal extra intrigerend. Het mysterie rond de Makussteen, een machtig artefact dat duistere magie kan versterken, brengt de Wijzen in beweging. Hun groep splitst zich op, wat leidt tot twee bloedstollende verhaallijnen vol actie, wendingen en emotie.
De spanning bouwt zich gestaag op, tot de afzonderlijke lijnen op indrukwekkende wijze samenkomen in een krachtig, onverwacht plot. Zonder iets te verklappen: het einde is verrassend, intens en maakt dat je direct verder wilt lezen.

My feelings about book 1 apply to this book as well: fun, and would have been improved by the author fully embracing writing a YA book. I enjoyed reading it, but doubt that I'll wrap up the trilogy.

It pains me to rate this 1 lowly star because I was lost in the magic of The Great Library of Tomorrow.
The Sky of Sacrifice ABSOLUTELY read like a YA book and I don't understand why? It makes me question the love I have for book 1, like maybe I need to go back and see if maybe I had gilded blinders on or something. So many many examples of YA like actions..
Let's start with Veer, Maia and Paix... you are telling me that at least Veer is a well seasoned Sage.... and has this great attitude about going into an utterly destroyed realm trying to track down Payne and get the journal and a trap didn't even cross his mind until he was well... in a trap? All those chapters with the three of them I literally GROANED. Literally NOTHING at all happened. Except we get these absolutely cute little pages describing the horror of Penumbris which I get maybe the first two chapters of but it just kept GOING ON AND ON. Please I get it, total destruction, lots of gray and ash, occasional burnt up things and a tremor-like monster that will break through the ground and eat people. The way these three characters interacted just mind boggled me, the inner dialogue of Veer, the annoying optimism of all three characters just felt off to me? Like they step out of the portal into a destroyed village/city? Saw lights and campfire in the distance and thought "well lets go see if we can find survivors" YOUVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW.... You literally know this is the realm that Payne has creating massive amounts of unwritten right? Like even before the attack on the library in the first book.
Let's move on to Nu, Robin, Arturo and Co. I absolutely loathed Nu this entire book. Look I get it.. Nu is a Sage now and has responsibilities but the way the author "tried" leveling up this character just did not sit right with me at all. She felt like a shell of herself from book 1. Trying to act all grown up and being the leader literally became her entire personality. I got cranky mother trying to get her children from Point A to Point B most of the book. The way she interacted with all these characters from Book 1 makes it seem like she vastly aged, almost talked down to them.
I feel like Rosalia is a sell out at this point because once AGAIN we get the lovely "they" character that literally does nothing but wave their hands around and pull out semi useful information for Operation save the Library group #2. None of that was in book 1 which I had appreciated but another point of backslide for me.
I'm going to sound like the "villain" but there can actually be TOO much Optimism and this book a prime example. I am so tired of being told to have hope, told that things are evil, told that things are good, etc. I was told this entire story not shown and it made reading this book just about a month-long feat.
Payne ohhhh PAYNE absolutely just STOP with the Scooby Doo villiain talks... "if it wasn't for those meddling Sages"
"And I have this!" He held the living coin aloft..." I just plain slapped my hand to my forehead reading this line.
Isn't there a book somewhere in the Great Library of Tomorrow about how to speak like a true villain for dummies' or something? Because Payne needs to check that out.
The characters I liked in Book 1, Nu, Mwamba and Veer were the biggest disappointments to me in Book 2. 1 Star for Robin, who I feel like stayed the same and has every right to be mad at Nu.
Step 1 we need to calm down with the words Hope, Good, Evil usage etc.. I feel like there is a whole lot to explain/expand on in book 3 and I really hope Rosalia comes back from the second book slump.

The Sky of Sacrifice is het tweede deel in de high fantasy-trilogie Het boek der Wijsheid van de Mexicaanse schrijfster Rosalia Aguilar Solace. Net als in het eerste deel neemt ze de lezer opnieuw mee naar de Grote Bibliotheek van Morgen en de magische wereld die daarachter schuilgaat. Deze mysterieuze papierwereld is alleen toegankelijk via verborgen portalen en wordt beschermd door Wijzen die alles op alles moeten zetten om de verwoesting van de rijken tegen te houden.
Oude bekenden keren terug, terwijl nieuwe gezichten voor frisse energie zorgen. De personages zijn stuk voor stuk mooi neergezet, de ene wat uitgebreider dan de anderen. Ze zijn divers met hun eigen emoties die oprecht aanvoelen en juist doordat ze proberen rationeel te blijven in een wereld vol chaos, groeien ze je als lezer echt aan het hart. Ik vond vooral Arturo een ontwapenend personage – zijn openheid en verwondering bij het ontdekken van een onbekende wereld raakten me. En laten we de schattige orbs niet vergeten, die voor een vleugje luchtigheid zorgen in de duisternis.
De schrijfstijl van Aguilar Solace is opnieuw beeldend en gedetailleerd. Ze schrijft met zo’n visuele kracht dat het soms voelt alsof je naar een film kijkt: je ziet de gangen, hoort de echo’s, voelt het vocht en de dreiging. De wonderlijke sfeer die ze oproept, wordt regelmatig doorkruist door donkere, bijna claustrofobische momenten waarin de dood voelbaar dichtbij is. Die afwisseling tussen verwondering en beklemming maakt het verhaal intens en meeslepend.
Ik waardeerde het deze keer meer dat het verhaal opnieuw verteld werd vanuit verschillende perspectieven. Die afwisseling zorgt voor diepte en maakt dat je als lezer een breder beeld krijgt van wat zich allemaal afspeelt in deze complexe wereld. Soms moest ik mezelf echt bedwingen om niet vooruit te bladeren naar de hoofdstukken over bv. Nu en haar missie– mijn nieuwsgierigheid won het bijna van mijn zelfbeheersing!

📖 ‘The sky of sacrifice’ is het tweede deel in de ‘Het boek der wijsheid’-serie. In deel één leer je de Grote Bibliotheek van Morgen kennen. Verschillende Wijzen dragen de waarden van de mensheid uit en beschermen de rijken van Papierwereld. Die zijn met elkaar verbonden via magische portalen en worden bestuurd door het Boek der Wijsheid. Dat Boek is normaal gezien een gids voor de Wijzen. Na een aanval van Asman op de Wijze van de Hoop, blijft het boek echter angstwekkend stil. De Wijzen gaan wanhopig op zoek naar aanwijzingen over hun vijand en een manier om hem te verslaan.
📖 Boek twee gaat verder waar boek één geëindigd is. De feeststemming, na de strijd tegen het kwaad, slaat na een brute daad volledig om. De Wijzen moeten opnieuw alles uit de kast halen om de vijand tegen te houden.
📖 Net als in boek één, volg je de zoektocht naar een oplossing vanuit meerdere sporen en meerdere perspectieven. De Wijzen splitsen zich op zodat ze aan verschillende delen van een mogelijke oplossing kunnen werken.
📖 De Wijzen trekken naar verschillende rijken. Hun reizen worden gedetailleerd en levendig beschreven. Elk rijk ziet er anders uit, heeft andere bewoners en gebruiken, etc. Hoewel die diversiteit boeiend is, wordt het daardoor geregeld ook wat chaotisch en onoverzichtelijk. Veel namen, plaatsen en gebeurtenissen wisselen elkaar af. Het voelt een beetje alsof je naar alle kanten tegelijk geblazen wordt door een wervelwind aan gebeurtenissen.
📖 Het verhaal belichaamt de waarden van Tomorrowland, met Wijzen die hoop, wijsheid, liefde enz. vertegenwoordigen. Dat voelt geregeld wat cliché aan, maar werkt wel binnen het verhaal. Er wordt immers duchtig gestreden tegen het kwaad, waarbij de hoop is dat goedheid en samenwerking tot de overwinning zullen leiden.
📖 Deze serie is niet meteen een nieuwe favoriet (daar is het ietsje te chaotisch voor), maar ik ben wel blij dat ik deze dankzij @standaard_uitgeverij ontdekt heb. Dank jullie wel voor dit verrassingsexemplaar.
📖 Boek twee gaat verder waar boek één geëindigd is. De feeststemming, na de strijd tegen het kwaad, slaat na een brute daad volledig om. De Wijzen moeten opnieuw alles uit de kast halen om de vijand tegen te houden.
📖 Net als in boek één, volg je de zoektocht naar een oplossing vanuit meerdere sporen en meerdere perspectieven. De Wijzen splitsen zich op zodat ze aan verschillende delen van een mogelijke oplossing kunnen werken.
📖 De Wijzen trekken naar verschillende rijken. Hun reizen worden gedetailleerd en levendig beschreven. Elk rijk ziet er anders uit, heeft andere bewoners en gebruiken, etc. Hoewel die diversiteit boeiend is, wordt het daardoor geregeld ook wat chaotisch en onoverzichtelijk. Deze high fantasy serie heeft een gave wereld die door de schrijfster goed is neergezet. Oude personages keren terug en je leert ze weer beter kennen, wat ik erg leuk vond om te lezen. Het verhaal begint vredig, maar de spanning in het boek begint snel. Rosalia Aguilar Solace geeft veel diepgang aan haar verhaal en ze weet hoe ze plots moet schrijven. Soms vond ik de details wat te veel en werd het avontuur tussen goed en kwaad wat te veel aangedikt. Nu kwam ik net als deel 1 er wat moeilijker in, maar dat komt waarschijnlijk omdat ik weinig high fantasy leest. Rosalia Aguilar Solace schrijft erg realistisch en het voelt of je door de portalen heen gaat en tussen de magische wezens staat.

Well, what can I say, just absolutely superb. One of my top 10 favourite reads of 2025. So that'll give you a feel for my review to come.
I adore epic fantasy, my most favourite and beloved genre, and The Great Library of Tomorrow is a truly fine example of the category.
A real masterpiece of fantasy writing from an absolute virtuoso of her craft.
It's a book that stands on the shoulders of giants of the genre, Tolkien, Sanderson, Hobb, Rothfuss, Eddings, Pullmam, to name a few, and it's a read that for me, certainly gives those geniuses a run for their money.

Action, adventure, delightful worldbuilding, most of the elements I enjoyed from The Great Library of Tomorrow continue in this second book in the Book of Wisdom Trilogy.
I went into The Sky of Sacrifice looking forward to the brilliant world building that was there in the first book, and we did get to travel along with the Sages and their friends to some new fantastical locations. This book does go to some dark places, though (quite literally in the case of a few characters) and with the almost whiplash-inducing back and forth between joyous chapters and dark despair was a little jarring from time to time.
The characters in this story were marvellous in book one, but I found myself frustrated by the absolute good vs evil, the terrible darkness vs the goodness of those trying to save the realms.
This book does end on a cliffhanger to be resolved in book three, fair warning. We're left without hope, without a way forward and the library in peril, and I really hope it can all be pulled together in a satisfactory way for the final book. I love the way all the realms are connected and I'll be looking forward to completing the tale.

I enjoyed this one more than the first one and I look forward to the next book to see how it all ends.
The issue I have with this book though is that I didn’t feel like the world expanded much from the first and I feel it would have been if it was.
I’m also still not really connecting to the characters emotionally as much as I want and the good guys vs villains are too blatant.
The book reads YA opposed to a solid darker adult for me and just doesn’t quite meet my expectations.

Ik heb de Nederlandse boek gelezen, maar aangezien deze hier niet bij vermeld staat, neem ik deze editie maar. Wel erg jammer dat het niet in het Nederlands als epub formaat te krijgen is.

Ik was zo enthousiast om weer in de magische wereld van The Library of Tomorrow te duiken en dit tweede deel heeft niet teleurgesteld.
Het begin bouwt langzaam op, je krijgt enorm veel informatie, personage ontwikkeling en wereldopbouw, maar deze is nodig om uiteindelijk tot bij de actie te komen. Het is een compleet nieuwe wereld, met daarin ook nog nieuwe werelden, waardoor de nodige informatie als lezer nodig is om te volgen. Echter voelde het voor mij niet aan als een informatiedump, door de manier waarop je deze info krijgt. Je reist mee met de personages door deze werelden en beleefd het allemaal door hun ogen.
Ik sta nog steeds versteld van hoe Rosalia Aguilar Solace de essentie van Tomorrowland zo mooi in dit boek vervat heeft gekregen. De referenties blijven doorkomen en als grote fan van het festival is dit zo fijn om te lezen. Je ziet het ook gewoon allemaal tot leven komen en deze kennis geeft het hele verhaal en de reeks een extra dimensie. Alles komt zo mooi samen en het klopt ook echt gewoon.
De sfeer in de boeken is wat mij betreft de grootste sterkte van deze reeks.
Het is een prachtige fantasy serie, de Paperworld is prachtig om in te vertoeven en ik kan niet wachten op meer!
